like there comes a point where you think something is fundamentally wrong with you. and then it turns out it’s just Friday and you haven’t washed your hair in three days and maybe you’re also just a little lonely and the combination of all three of those things is whittling a hole into your chest every time you breathe. but also the sun’s up. and you’ve survived everything so far, so you’ll survive this too, even if it hurts, even if you have to survive it many times.

it took another trans man sharing his blood test results with me for me to realize my doctor was committing malpractice for the past seven years by giving me far too little testosterone

it took many trans masculine people sharing their results with me to confirm it so I knew to try to find a different doctor, and they are now doubling my testosterone

I'm going to make sure to warn as many trans people as I can, as an individual, so that other people were not hurt in the way that I was hurt

this is why it's important to build communities for trans people and include them

To add to this point: It took me three years to realize my doctor committed malpractice by massively overdosing me on testosterone. It took me collapsing on my way to work and not being able to use my legs for them to figure out I was about to have a stroke as a direct result. My blood being as thick as it was meant even with twice daily blood thinners the phlebotomy I needed wasn’t possible with a 16G needle. I had a McDonalds strawberry milkshake running through my veins as apposed to the blood that should have been there and I just wouldn’t bleed. No matter how hard they tried they weren’t able to draw enough blood.

In part due to the autoimmune response that alerted me something was wrong I’ve been in pain everyday since the day before I collapsed. It’s been 5 years.

I had to be taken off testosterone and placed on blockers multiple times to prove that testosterone at healthy levels wasn’t contributing to my symptoms continuing. As an additional “fuck you” we already knew my body doesn’t function well on an estrogen dominant system. I required hospitalization and medication when I had periods when I was off testosterone. As a result of that it was recommended I get a hysterectomy sooner rather than later. Now I’m back on testosterone off blockers with a few less reproductive organs and a shit ton of medical trauma.

I will continue to scream this story from the top of my lungs until people realize the importance not just of testing your levels but understanding what the hell they even mean.

Talk to your friends about your levels have them talk to you about yours. Remind each other when it’s time to get tested. Ensure you and your friends don’t wind up like me.

for reference:

-between ~300 and 600 ng/dl is the average male testosterone level across men across most age groups (excluding under 18)

-average male red blood cell count is between ~4.5-6 million red blood cells/mcl

-average male hemoglobin is ~13.5-17.5 g/dl

testosterone can cause your body to produce a lot more red blood cells (polycythemia) which can cause the blood thickening ^ not only should your doctor be checking your testosterone levels AT LEAST once a year, but they should also be checking your rbc count and hemoglobin levels. your doctor should also be sharing these results with you so you can make educated decisions about your health. please ask your doctor to see your results if they dont already share them, and if your levels are off, please try to see a new doctor if possible 💚

Reznor is a very intense individual. On this day, he's thumbing through a medical tomb titled The Atlas of Gynecological Pathology, and after displaying what a syphilis bacteria looks like when enlarged 300 times, he offers illustrations demonstrating how the disease can annihilate man's most vital organs. A sly smile crosses his face - Trent seldom smiles. "Things could be worse."

top surgery tip 1)

get yourself used to sleeping on your back (and possibly elevated depending on your surgeon) BEFORE surgery.

top surgery tip 2)

have cough drops on hand because your throat will probably be sore from the breathing tube they use with anesthesia.

Top surgery tip 3)

Get and use straws. You'll have T-Rex arms for a while but you still need to hydrate.

top surgery tip 4)

the post surgery compression binder is more comfortable than youd think but it still gets pretty itchy. so dont be afraid to take benydryl, itll help you rest and stop the itch

top surgery tip 5)

sounds weird but try not to flex your pecs… watched a horror game play through and every time there was a jump scare my whole body tensed up including my pecs which hurt like a bitch

Top surgery tip 6)

Have hand sanitizer/ body wipes incase you cannot reach across sinks easily and to also put under your armpits if you cannot get deodorant there

top surgery tip 7)

you might be numb in some areas affected by the surgery. especially if your surgeon does any liposuction along with just cutting your boobs off. right now my armpits are numb which makes cleaning them weird. less of a tip and more its normal for early in recovery

top surgery tip 8)

about a week in stuff starts to feel like pins and needles. i thought that meant my one nipple was falling off. turns out its the opposite and its them coming back to life. the post op compression binder while annoying does help the tingling feel less weird

top surgery tip 9)

you surgeon may be ripped to hell and back like mine and put the compression binder on super tight. ITS OK TO LOOSEN IT A LITTLE.

its there for compression to keep the swelling down but same rules apply as a regular binder: it might be a little uncomfortable and feel tight but you need to still be able to BREATHE

top surgery tip 10)

invest in a long pair of tongs or one of those claw grabber things. i just made ramen that was in a cabinet above the microwave. how? tippy toes and tongs.

Top surgery tip 11)

You can buy little hair net looking guys at some major pharmacies that include shampoo and can be used to wash your hair in bed if you’re having trouble in the shower

(This is a general surgery tip but all my disabled friends swear by ‘em post surgery it makes your life much easier and you can feel properly clean)

top surgery tip 12) it’s okay to sleep on the couch or in a chair if it’s too difficult or painful to get in and out of bed. My couch plus a pile of throw pillows on either side of me was the perfect place to sit and simmer as I recovered. I also recommend getting one of those airplane pillows that go around your neck. very useful if you end up sleeping sitting up and don’t want your neck to crick.

top surgery tip 13)

when it comes to scar care. anything is better than nothing. and you dont need to shell out hundreds of dollars for fancy scar creams. to massage your scars as long as everythings properly closed you can just grab an gentle unscented or naturally scented lotion and use that. shea butter, cocoa butter, bio oil the like. youre just looking for something for sensitive skin and thatll keep them hydrated.

top surgery tip 14)

during recovery, my chest muscles would feel really tight and painful. it wasn't something i was warned about, so i thought something was wrong, but when i looked it up it is apparently a fairly common side effect of having surgery for the muscles in that area to seize up. i did some gentle massage and put a heat pack on the sore areas to help the muscles relax and that helped a lot, along with the muscle relaxants and pain meds my dr sent me home with.

Uhhhh, okay so just in case anyone is curious, usually for stir fries if I don't specifically plan to do something like kung pao or tso or mongolian-style I have a very basic vibe-check sauce. It's sorta like modified teriyaki.

Ingredients: -Soy sauce, dark if you can help it but any is fine -sriracha -sesame oil (i always use sesame oil personally unless i'm cooking something that specifically needs olive oil or deep-frying) -brown sugar -rice wine vinegar -rice wine -honey -corn starch slurry

I don't really have any standardized measurements bc I've never bothered to try and standardize it since the point is just to be no-effort no-fuss. If I had to try and give an idea of proportions:

-soy sauce as the 'base' of the sauce. like maybe a half a cup. -handful of brown sugar -drizzle of honey -drizzle of sriracha -teaspoon sesame oil, vinegar, wine -2tsp corn starch 1tsp water in a slurry before being added in

Thank you! When youre stir frying beef what you want to do is get a cut like a broil or a flank or skirt. Something not too tall without thick fat marbling. When cutting the meat, cut at a 45 degree angle in thin strips. You can cut the strips in half or whatever if youd rather have bite size pieces, but do the strips first. When the time comes to throwing them in the pan youre gonna want a medium-high heat with the oil fully hot in the wok--I always stirfry my veggies first bc I prefer my veggies quite crispy and a bit blistered, so stir frying veggies first as the oil and wok properly heat up works well for me.

Be generous with refreshing the oil because you want to throw in just a couple handfuls at a time. Stir fry stuff in small batches so that they get a lot of the heat and oil and cook up quick. You're flash-searing and blistering, and if you crowd the pan they'll just steam and spread the heat out too thin.

The way your steak should stir fry is essentially searing the second it hits the pan. Flip after about 30 seconds to sear the other side, then set it off to the side for the next batch. You don't really need to "stir" the beef when cooking it.

I have an end-of-life patient to whom I spoke today. She burst out laughing and said, "It was all such fun. I just had so much fun." I wish this for everyone. I wish that we each would meet death laughing, with little regret and even less fear.
