20 years ago today Australia had one of its worst mass shootings in its history, with 35 people being killed in Port Arthur, Tasmania.
Before then, there had been 8 mass shootings in 10 years. There were around 1 million illegal firearms in the country and guns were very easy to buy. Guns were quite ingrained into our culture.
After the Port Arthur Massacre, the Howard government in power at the time implemented a massive gun buyback, where people were told to surrender their illegal firearms. Over 640 000 were handed in and destroyed.
There were many protests over this, and it made the Howard government extremely unpopular. Some even compare the Howard government to Hitler.
But after the Port Arthur massacre there have been 0 mass shootings in Australia.
None.
As well as this, overall gun violence and suicide by firearms has dropped dramatically.
Imagine living in a country where children born here in the last 20 years don’t know what it’s like to be in a country where mass shootings occur, or occur regularly. Where gun violence is a rare and unusual event.
This is our reality.
The Howard government wasn’t the greatest for sure, but their reforms to gun policies changed Australia and our culture for the better. Despite it being an unpopular opinion at the time, they did the right thing and saved thousands of lives.
And I for one like living in a country without the fear of being shot at.

John just not giving a fuck that Paul’s forgotten his cigarettes again in Boston (a few minutes later Paul mysteriously has a cigarette, and I’m 50/50 on whether John gave him one out of the kindness of his heart, or Ringo gave him one to stop the impending domestic.)
I simply adore this picture.
