Been trying to think of a way to explain to American audiences why the 9 dash line thing is so important to SEAsians and why it's justifiable to ban the Barbie movie for it, but the closest explanation I can give is this: imagine if this painting was in the Barbie movie with no explanation and we were all just supposed to accept it without comment
I don't care if people watch the movie, I know everyone was excited for it, me included. But I'd hope in the very least we can tell people why the Vietnam ban was 100% justified. 9 dash line maps are a distillation of over a decade of Chinese imperialist oppression against SEAsian countries. Most of the world doesn't care, but that's how it is.
At least have this as a learning experience.
Basically in 2015 international courts ruled against China taking up the majority of the West Philippine / South China sea, since it was maritime territory shared between the different countries. China then ignored the ruling, destroyed the local ecosystem to build an artificial military island, and has been policing it heavily ever since.
It's like if someone moved into your shared kitchen and threatened to shoot you for trying to get food.
Since then Vietnam has had a hard line stance against them and the Philippines has had to rely on American military power to match threat for threat. We'd love to not have either of these superpower imperialist fucks looming over us but that's not the world we live in.
Anyway. That's why. If they remove it from the movie, that'll be nice, but it's a bigger statement than just a picture.
It is entirely possible to hold both of the following beliefs:
- Media companies presenting Chinese imperialism as the status quo is horrid
- It is fucked up that a country will outright censor a movie for political reasons, even if those reasons are sympathetic
I don't think we need to say "yeah, the state should be able to determine what movies you can and can't see" to say "that's a fucked up detail in the movie"

I’m having feelings about Katara v Pakku again, and the fact that at this point in the series, Katara has never been in a fight that wasn’t to the death. Every fight she’s ever been in has had world-ending stakes. She’s not shooting to kill Pakku because she’s weaker and less trained than him - though she is - she’s shooting to kill because she doesn’t know any other way to fight. Friendly sparring, or fighting as a spectator sport, has not been a part of this girl’s life. Pakku’s fighting Katara to put troublesome teenagers in their place; Katara’s fighting Pakku because they’ll all die if Pakku doesn’t pull his head out of his ass and train the Avatar.
Pakku is genuinely surprised to see his own reflection in that disc of ice Katara shoots right past his face. If he hadn’t dodged, it would have sliced his head right open. He starts putting actual effort in after that.
How dare you hide this in the tags.
Sorry to everyone who’s enjoyed the last 130 years of science and culture journalism, but Disney needs the money to fund Toy Story 9
