ALL THE THINGS!

@sevenbrigade

...that entertain me.

pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it's like, "oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism" and that was very very brave of them

I'm kind of glad to hear that everyone does this. Because it means it isn't colonizer bullshit, it's what everyone does. It's just people discovering new things. Everyone goes:

"Oh hey these people have their own style of [language A's word for thing. Say, what do you call it?"

"Oh it's [language B's word for thing]."

"Got it, it's [language B's word for thing] variety [language A's word for thing]"

added to which it is LITERALLY JUST LINGUISTIC SHORTHAND for

[item] the way [culture] makes it.

If you don’t want sliced bread, you want bread the way Eastern Indians make it you ask for Roti, not bread. Because Roti is bread THE WAY [EASTERN] INDIANS MAKE IT. Like fuck, it’s not that complicated a concept.

OF COURSE it’s not colonizer bullshit! It’s just linguistic shorthand!

Today, one of my second graders was working on shape name recognition, and we got to this picture of a pyramid shape with a wide-ish base. When he saw it, his eyes lit up and he turned to me with a huge grin on his face, pointed at it, and said "When the teacher forgets to assign homework" before bursting out into hysterics, covering his mouth and giggling. I don't understand what happened except this kid CLEARLY knows about the strong comedic and memeable value of mathematical shapes and emotions that I, an old millennial, cannot comprehend I did, however, try to recreate this moment as the meme this child must have seen in his head

maybe he was thinking of the dancing triangle meme??

i have seen this gif with that exact caption before. this is absolutely the one he was thinking of

thinking about Pokémon Go Summer (again) and how it likely blew up so much because adults finally had an excuse to Go Outside And Play in a way that met them where they are. Like, over time the ever-present threat of public humiliation/being filmed for some bastard's TikTok has done such a number on folk that some can't just relax and goof around and express themselves anymore, limiting their outdoor play to organised sports or maybe a yearly game of Frisbee In The Park. But to have an excuse to be playing outside on your phone? Something literally everyone is doing all the time? With a globally recognisable and easily accessible media property? Having a reason to be curious and explore your local surroundings, and talk to strangers in your environment, even if that reason is something as trivial as "there's a Dragonite over there"? Inspired. World-changing. Shame Niantic fucked it so hard

Leftism teaches you that the most annoying people in the world can have the exact same opinions as you. And they'll still get on your nerves

Other leftists will say some shit you fundamentally agree with but phrased in a way designed in a lab specifically to piss you off. Like you're right but shut the fuck up

what if you got on a plane and it started going down the run way and started speeding up and then it turned into the interstate and just started driving to your destination

I don't know if it is funnier to imagine it driving very quickly or just at regular car speed
