When Sherry Johnson was eleven, she found one day that she’s gonna marry a 20-year-old member of her church who had raped her. She became pregnant and in order to avoid investigation and criminal case, her family and church officials decided to make the girl a legal wife of this monster.

“My mom asked me if I wanted to get married, and I said, ‘I don’t know, what is marriage, how do I act like a wife?’” Johnson remembers today, many years later. “She said, ‘Well, I guess you’re just going to get married.’”

However, her case is one of thousand cases of child marriage. According to statistics, children 16 and under are still being married in Florida at a rate of one every few days.

Johnson and her family also attended a conservative Pentecostal church and that other girls of a similar age periodically also married. One girl said when she was 10 she was raped by both a minister and a parishioner and later gave birth to a daughter. There were all documents confirming her and her child’s age, but still, the judge approved the marriage to end the rape investigation, telling her, “What we want is for you to get married.”

And nevertheless, America prefers to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, like in Syria, calling it “defending freedom” rather than to change states’ laws and to protect American children from rape, coercion and molestation.

Today, Johnson is campaigning for a state law to stop underage marriage that has already become a norm in some states.

Please, help me to raise awareness to this issue. No one can remain indifferent to the problem of child molestation.

You know what we need more of? Beginner’s classes for adults.

It’s supposed to be really, really good for you to keep learning new things as you age. It helps stave off strokes and dementia and Alzheimer’s and improves memory. And hey, learning stuff is fun.

But I really don’t want to be infantilized when I try to learn something. And I definitely don’t learn the way a child does. And honestly, what adult wants to be in the same class as children? Very few.

This occurred to me recently because I’d like to learn how to actually ice skate properly. My parents never signed me up for classes, because it wasn’t a thing they ever cared about or thought about. Now I’m in my twenties and want to learn, and also don’t want to be surrounded by a bunch of eight-year-olds who probably honestly skate better than I do. Because that’s embarrassing, and embarrassment is not how you learn.

Would it be good to lose the social stigma of being worse at something than a child? Yes. Hell yes. But we’ve got to start somewhere, and like I said: adults don’t really learn the way kids do, and a lot of people use these kinds of activities to make friends, and I don’t want to make friends with an eight-year-old, either.

So.

Beginner’s classes for adults. Let adults suck at stuff and learn how to get better and learn new things and broaden their horizons, while still being treated as adults. Classes for writing, for pottery, for chess, for art, for instruments, for singing, for sports, for chemistry. For everything, dammit.

One excellent way to support these sorts of things you dig?

SUPPORT COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

For real, friends, community colleges are not just the cheap midstep for high school graduates without excess funds, they’re incredible resources for non traditional students of all kinds.

You’ve been out of school 10 years, had a kid, got divorced, up and said “fuck you retail it’s time to get an AA”? COMMUNITY COLLEGE GOTCHU BB.

Wanna learn college-course stuff for funsies/enrichment without getting a degree but also don’t want to pay five million dollars? COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Ask about auditing courses.

Need that food service safe-serve certification? COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Wanna learn to decorate cakes for the shiggles? COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Need a forklift certification to get a bump at that warehouse job because you don’t want to go back to fucking school but you wanna make decent monies? COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

Need literacy courses as an adult because of learning disabilities or other circumstances? Need ESL classes? To get a GED? Community college has got your back.

Meanwhile, when state legislatures go about the appropriations and budgeting hack and slash phase of the year, if money has to drop out of the education budget, guess where it comes from.

Not K-12, because that is too easily political cyanide; fastest way to look like a Disney villain politician is to take money away from kids and teens in public schools. The mom army will be on your ass like stank on hot garbage.

It sure as hell don’t come from state universities, either, babe, because they have merchandising and wildly popular athletic programs and alumni who love flashing their fugly class rings and throwing around their dollars on things like campaign funds and endowments for buildings with their names on them.

No, community colleges are the easy target.

Despite how crucial they are to workforce development, to a citizenry who can afford higher education and therefore better work opportunities and therefore higher contributions to local and state economies. Despite how community colleges enrich their local and regional communities in ways innumerable, from summer programs for children to those very adult-oriented continued education classes that desperately need wider support and less stigmatization.

Just take a look at the disaster that is the Mississippi state legislature’s approach to community college funding here in 2017. Almost every community college in the state has been forced into furloughs and layoffs, and all have been forced to raise tuitions to make up for the stunning shortfall in state funding.

So if you dig the absolutely wonderful idea of more adult-age education, job training, and enrichment programs, turn out for your community colleges. They’re here for you. Be here for them.

You’re a fool if you think science is anything but a human endeavour. Politics aka the issues and ideologies we face as humans will always be apart of our science.

Exactly.

The Inquisition tried Galileo for heresy in 1633 because of his heliocentric theory, his theory on tides and his theory on comets. They kept him under house arrest until the day he died. Science has always been political and fueled by ideologies.
