In olden times, people had daily chores and other things to do but their workload/ daily working hours was actually much lower than it is today. Even in farming communities.
The concept of working super hard every day actually comes from capitalism, which in turn comes from Puritanical ideology.
The Puritans believed in salvation through work and in no play.
Early capitalists adopted this ideology because it meant higher productivity and therefore more money if their factories were running near constantly.
The idea of needing to be continuously productive in order to be useful/ allowed things like food and shelter, is actually quite an insidious ideal that is deeply rooted in the American culture.
4 day work weeks have actually proven to be more productive than the 5 day week. But corporations won't adopt it willingly because it means less of a stranglehold on their workers.

I think my immediate reaction on finishing part 1 was like
loved the art, loved the characters def feel like the story has a lot further to go thematically, only really picked up for me with the reveal of the gun devil
I now think CSM's strength in the early arcs is the patience of the construction of Denji as an everyman resisting the reality that the promised capitalist horizon he imagines is a lie.
now that you can tell the horrible direction my thoughts are going in I will continue under the cut, this is so long oh god. cw: canon typical violence, sexual assault etc.
On the note of denji's initial goals, I think it's actually the opposite of a cheap attempt at placing him in the standard shonen trope of "kid with a big" dream is being subverted from two different angles.
because his dreams are considerably far more mundane than the likes of both is in-narrative peers and of other manga in the genre, and this lack of mundanity works for the story's favor, since most things at that scale usually lead to disengagement since they are already almost a guarantee, however with denji, the opposite happens, since because his are such simple goals, the story can keep going even if he fails, leading to denji getting into a relationship being less of a possibility than Naruto being hokage.
Additionally, while he technically achieved his first goals of touching a woman (WITH CONSENT) and getting a kiss, in principle he has failed, with both of these experiences being underwhelming to horrifically unpleasant, to the point where he comments that this might have completely ruined his will to kiss someone again, because this was so awful that he will probably be reminded of it whenever something similar happens again (which I definitely feel like is a commentary on something but I am unfortunately not the person for that).
So denji's dreams are actually a pretty interesting part of the story because he doesn't really know what he wants for the most part, doing what instinctively feels nice to do (eat good food) and what he thinks he wants but is instead confusing for what he needs (physical intimacy, instead of emotional intimacy, his only friend is his sister and his manipulate boss), which leads to a subversion of the standard shonen protagonist
