I just watched my neighbor try to unload an actual wooden pallet that had to have been forklifted into the back of his insecurity pickup worth of fireworks.

Except that he does not have a forklift in his garage.

He does have so much sports memorabilia and cardboard boxes of unsold MLM Merchandise and patriotically themed camping gear and posters of women in bikinis and flags of suspect political organizations in his garage that there is only BARELY enough space for the fireworks and certainly none for his truck.

So he had to unload the individual boxes of recreational explosives from the back of his truck and stack them in the minimal space he had cleared by hand. This is a tedious and time-consuming process as this neighbor has purchased a wide variety of recreational and locally illegal explosives instead of many of just a few types, so the individual boxes are rather small.

He begins, and this is crucial to what happens next, by cutting apart the industrial-grade saran wrap his explosives dealer had so carefully wrapped his merchandise in, and discarded it unsecured on his lawn.

I've seen people from both sides of the Gale Hawthorne opinion spectrum say that the end of Mockingjay with Katniss saying "Good-bye Gale" as a way of showing Collins meant to vilify Gale, with Gale fans criticizing Collins ending for Gale as punishing an oppressed teenager and Gale antis using it to show he's the worst ever. I don't think this interpretation is correct on either side.

First, this is a first person present tense narrative from Katniss’s POV. Of course Katniss will feel most betrayed by Gale and (likely) not wish to have contact with him again and when she does mention him after, use language to distance himself from her.

But we know Gale is a natural leader, he's well known in Panem thanks to the propos, and got an important job in Two after the war. We also know that Katniss feels safe enough to have children fifteen years after the war. Taking these clues, it's easy for me to surmise that Gale in whatever way became a leader that Panem needed. He likely grew from losing Katniss’s friendship and from his design being used to kill Prim, and when making decisions always had these at the back of his mind. Whatever way he helped build Panem was effective enough to bring peace and happiness to his old hunting partner, looking out for her where he could from Two by creating a larger structure of stability in their world.

So I don't think Collins ever meant to say that Gale was a lost cause after the war. Yes, I do think she condemned his bomb design and blase attitude about human life, but I don't think she was unforgiving or writing him off as "one of the bad guys" or incapable of change. If she were trying to say that, Gale and Panem would have had different fates than they do in the end.
