just learnt the artist of my favourite childhood books, shirley barber, has died. she was 88 years old and lived a full life but i am devastated at her loss. her books are the first thing i remember reading; the first thing i remember being enchanted by. the first realisation i had that magic existed and that people could create it. rest easy, shirley; thank-you so, so much for all the wonderful memories and the inspiration. you were a singularly incredible artist. i hope the fairies were there, in the dawn, waiting for you; i hope they took your hand and showed you the very same magic you created for the rest of us. 🌷🌈✨🦢💧

Thank you for your beautiful words. This wonderful lady was my grandmother. For the past few years while she battled with her dementia, she couldn't paint or write and i wondered if people would forget about her and all of the magic she brought to the world. It makes me so happy to see that she hasn't been forgotten.

Your grandmother was a monolithic figure in the Australian children’s literature scene and she will be sorely missed. 🥺 I’m so sorry for your family’s loss; dementia is a particularly cruel way to lose a loved one. Your family did so well to protect her, though. 🥺

But please know you will never have to worry about her art and stories being forgotten!!! The evening I posted this, I went to a Christmas Market in the main street of my town—and ended up in a bookstore, where I was flipping through what of her books they had. The woman working there said they sold out, constantly; another, a customer, who’d been across the aisle and overheard us, mentioned her passing. Then all three of us went outside to admire the poster prints the shop had of her art (double spreads from The Enchanted Forest), in the display.

Your grandmother’s art is going to live forever, just like the fairies she gave us all. 🌷🌈
