anonymous asked:

I heard that "nonsexual" means non-aro ace and "asexual" means aro ace in Japan. I'm still confused about general Japanese terms in the ace community. If you don't mind, could you please explain the most commonly used terms?

hi, anon. you heard correctly, “asexual” (Aセクシャル) doesn’t mean what it means in English in Japan.

at the moment, what commonly used terminology there is regarding asexuality is mostly imported and translated directly from English, generally with their English meanings (more or less) in tact, although there are exceptions, of course. that said, compared to the extensive terminology that exists in English to describe various identities / orientations on the asexual spectrum, there is significantly less terminology available in Japan and even less that is in “common” usage… although that is changing every day.

at the moment, i’d say that these are (some of) the most commonly used terms with (approximate) English translations of commonly used definitions:

  • Aセクシャル / アセクシャル / Aセク / asexual / ace OR 無性愛 / museiai: experiencing neither sexual nor emotional attraction. 【ie. “aromantic asexual”】 《 → Aセクシャリティ / アセクシャリティ / asexuality》
  • ノンセクシャル / ノンセク / nonsexual OR 非性愛 / hiseiai: not experiencing sexual attraction while still experiencing emotional attraction.  【ie. “(allo)romantic asexual”】 《 → ノンセクシャリティ / nonsexuality》
  • 性的指向 / seiteki shikou: describes who one experiences sexual (and/or romantic) desire or love towards. 【ie. “sexual orientation”】
  • 友情結婚 / yuujou kekkon OR 友婚 / yuukon: marriage based on reasons that does not involve “love” or sex. 【ie. “ marriage of convenience”】 it’s common for there to be talk of such marriages in some ace spaces.
  • 婚活パーティー / konkatsu party: speed dating events, many of which cater to those seeking a marriage of convenience.
  • 婚活する / konkatsu suru: actively looking for a relationship, generally by going to / participating in 婚活パーティー / konkatsu parties.
  • カミングアウトする / kamingu auto suru OR カムする / kamu suru: to come out of the closet.

that said, as i noted above, ace terminology in Japan is changing every day. i feel like it’s no exaggeration to say that the language that Japanese aces use is very much in a state of flux right now. compared to in the past, i’ve noticed a huge uptick in people on Twitter using the split attraction model and other words that had previously been uncommon in Japanese, but had long since been common in English, such as:

  • グレーセクシャル graysexual OR グレーアセクシャル / グレーアセク / gray asexual / gray ace: similar to asexuality, but experiences sexual attraction to some degree / in some way. 《 → グレーセクシャリティ / グレーアセクシャリティ / gray (a)sexuality 》
  • デミセクシャル / デミセク / demisexual:  someone who does not experience sexual attraction unless a strong emotional bond is formed.  《→ デミセクシャリティ / demisexuality 》
  • グラデーション / gradation: spectrum. 【eg. Aセクシャリティにはグラデーションがある。 / asexuality ni wa guradeeshion ga aru. / asexuality exists on a spectrum. 】
  • △△セクシャルで〇〇セクシャル   / Y-sexual and X-sexual: usage of this predates usage of the SAM in Japan and is still used by some people today. the first word (△△セクシャル / Y-sexual)  is usually used to denote the gender(s) that a person may experience some form of attraction to, with the latter word (〇〇セクシャル / X-sexual) generally being a word on the ace spectrum to denote that person’s experience (or lack thereof) with sexual attraction. 【eg. バイセクシャルでノンセクシャル / a bisexual asexual】
  • 恋愛指向 / renai shikou: describes who one experiences emotional (romantic) love towards. 【ie. “romantic orientation”】
  • 〇〇ロマンチック / 〇〇ロマ / X-romantic / X-ro: someone who experiences romantic love (attraction) towards people of X gender(s). 【ie. パンロマ(ンチック) / panro(mantic)】
  • △△ロマンチックの〇〇セクシャル / △△ロマ〇〇セク  / Y-romantic X-sexual / Y-ro X-sexual: since the advent of the SAM in Japan, more and more people are beginning to identify themselves in this way, which again, mirrors the word usage in English-speaking ace spaces. 【eg. AロマンチックのAセクシャル / aromantic asexual, with Aセクシャル in this instance being used to refer specifically to (lack of) sexual attraction, even though it’s still very common to use Aセクシャル on its own to refer to both romantic and sexual orientation… and as an umbrella term… confusing, right?】

it’s really hard to talk about Japanese ace terminology in definitive terms because of the aforementioned state of flux that such terminology is in. in fact, i’m sure this very post will become dated not long after posting it!

furthermore, the Japanese ace ““community”” isn’t really a singular, coherent “community” at all, but rather just people who know people who know other people mostly online… which could be said of a lot of “communities” and thus is in no way unique to Japan’s ace community, but like…. imagine if the English-speaking ace community didn’t have Tumblr or AVEN, instead we only had a highly disjointed, disorganized site like Twitter and a dying equivalent to MySpace (ie. mixi). things that are common among some people on one platform may not be common among other people on that same platform, meanwhile on the other platform things may change in a completely different way if they even change at all. this is why i hesitate to say that even half of the above is actually common at all, because “common” is relative…

also, i feel like i can’t make a post like this about ace terminology in Japan without also commenting on how mixed i personally feel about it as a native English-speaking ace who constantly finds themself stuck between a rock and a hard place because of all this importation of English words into the Japanese language…

yeah…. a rock and a really hard place.

….actually it’d probably be best if i gave that subject a post of its own. later. will come back and edit this post if / when i do. sorry for inadvertently running away with your ask, anon.

Okay I debated I replying to this for a bit, but… here goes.

First and foremost I greatly appreciate all of your translation work for the fandom and I have for months.

That being said, I find the last paragraph of this necessary and also unfair. To accuse the other translators of ‘mistranslating’ the line when you outright admit that akashi can legitimately be translated as proof is a bit much, don’t you think? I get that you believe your translation is more correct, but as I’m sure you and the other translators are aware, language is not something all translators are going to unanimously agree on. Other translators work hard on their work, and essentially, saying that they’re mistranslating to forward a fanon agenda is unnecessary and uncalled for, in my opinion. There’s nothing to support that especially since even you’ve acknowledged their word choice is not incorrect.

Accusing their work of being fanon (especially when Victuuri, which is canon, is not remotely fanon) and yours of being canon is a further dig, I feel.

Regarding the destined from a previous life thing, I think most of fandom is not serious about that. When people are making comments about their soulmate AUs being canon, they’re well aware that Kubo is not literally saying “your fanfiction where Victor and Yuuri can’t see color until they meet their soulmate aka each other is now canon”. They’re just having fun.

We know what she actually means by soulmate.  It’s still a HUGE DEAL. And yes, there is a sense of destiny to the word soulmate, in both languages, even if it’s not on some ‘cosmic’ level, a certain ‘meant to be’, and that’s powerful. And yeah, that’s making fandom very excited and I think… there’s not really a need to sort of rain on that? People know their AUs aren’t really suddenly canon.

It’s not as if your translation of the line makes it much less shippy anyway.

Lastly the ‘Japanese word for soulmate’? I was under the impression, unless she uses it at another point in the article, that she doesn’t use a Japanese word anyway, but instead the katakana ソウルメイト (sorumeito/soulmate).

Hello! Thank you for your message and for voicing your opinion in what I think is the normal way when discussing about something. I will take this occasion to make one final last post about this whole matter to try and address what apparently wasn’t clear in my other posts. I will also explain in detail why I wrote that in my opinion “proof” is not a correct translation. It’s a bit long because I don’t want to come back to this topic again, so I’m trying to make sure that I’m covering everything that could help clarifying my point.

Did I forget anything???

Considering the last reblog reveals the Medal Fullbottle’s existence, I guess I’ll share this list I saw on 2ch, as it listed that combination of Medal and Taka as part of the OOO Fullbottle combo.

I don’t know if this was a theory or actual stuff found on the DX Build Driver, so I’ll label it as a rumor for now. Also, it involves listing off some of the things that WERE found on the Build Driver, so there’s spoilers as well~

anonymous asked:

top 10 anime ops, go

omg so i got this ask like 2 weeks ago or something, and this took hours of intense listening and deep thought and introspection, and then i went away to sydney for like 4 days and then i forgot about it. anyway, it pained me deeply to have to leave a couple out but here we go (in no real particular order… i think)

「Great Days」 - Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable (OP 3)

*pointing to the sky* LET THE VOICE OF LOVE TAKE YOU HIGHER~

i love this OP so much. like, sooooo so much. all jojo OP’s are incredibly high quality affairs, but the first time i heard great days i literally felt like my life was changing, like i was having some kind of religious experience. it was just that good. it’s so upbeat, it radiates warmth and optimism, and it makes me feel so good to listen to, and that combined with the stylish and evocative visuals makes this hands down my favourite jojo OP, and one of my favourite anime OP’s of all time.

ambiguous - Kill la Kill (OP 2)

if i absolutely had to pick a favourite anime, id probably say kill la kill. it’s just so special to me. it’s so cool and wild and silly and over the top and so much fun. watching it each week is still to this day the most fun i’ve ever had watching an anime, and this OP is just such a banger. that part with ryuko and satsuki fighting, sending hundreds of one-star students flying everywhere, and eventually creating the logo out of debris and blood from their fight is one of the coolest title drops ive ever seen in an anime OP. this OP got me hyped up every time. still does.

Peace Sign - My Hero Academia (OP 2)

ohhWOAHH OHHohh, ohh OHH Ohh ohh, ohh OHH Ohhohh oohhhhh…

oh my god i love this song. this song manages to encapsulate the tone, feel, and spirit of the series i love so much so perfectly, it actually blows me away. i really like the visuals too, theyre quite simple but effective, but the song is what really stands out to me here imo. OP’s will come and go as the series continues but in my heart Peace Sign will forever be THE theme of My Hero Academia. i dont have much else to say about it. this song fucking rules.

this anime ended up being only Okay in the end, tbh, tho i definitely enjoyed it. id give it like maybe a 7/10 overall. but holy moly, that OP tho!! this song is AMAZING and idk how to even describe all the feelings it stirs within me, and combined with the vibrant, kaleidoscopic visuals, this OP is simply breathtaking imo. 7/10 anime, 11/10 OP.

Hyadain no Kakakata Kataomoi/Joujou Yuujou - Nichijou

ok im cheating by including both nichijou OP’s in the one slot but u know what i DONT EVEN GIVE A CARE. nichijou is honestly the best anime ever made and it deserves it. i couldnt possibly separate its two OP’s, they’re a package deal tbh and they’re both the toppest of top tier. nichijou is love, nichijou is life.

Flyers - Death Parade

holy hell this song is a bop. a show this sad had no business bopping this hard in the OP and yet it does and its fantastic. enough said, really.

Soundscape - Hibike! Euphonium (2nd season)

who expected such a down-to-earth drama abt a high school concert band would have such an absolute banger of an OP?? the first season of eupho was one of my favourite animes of 2015, so to have the highly anticipated 2nd season a year later kick off with such a fun, high energy OP just got me so dang excited!! also worth mentioning is at the beginning of the season, the OP is presented mostly in black and white, but after they win the competition and get to move onto nationals at the end of ep 5, it gets changed in the next episode onward to be completely in full, vibrant, beautiful kyoani colour, and it just made me so !!!!… ya. good stuff.

99 - Mob Psycho 100

no jokes this might actually be the best OP ever made tbh. it’s a 100% fucking masterpiece in every way. going into detail abt everything that makes this one so good would make this post like 3 times longer than it already is. its JUST THAT GOOD.

THE HERO!! - One Punch Man

i really dont have much to say abt this one other than it’s hands down one of the most bangerest bangers of all time. i know it, you know it, we all know it. one punch man is getting a 2nd season, and i simply cannot fathom it having an OP better than this. they may as well just reuse it instead of trying to live up to it.

Sorairo Days - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Mark my words. This drill will open a hole in the universe, and that hole will become a path for those behind us! The dreams of those who have fallen; the hopes of those who will follow! These two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix, drill a path towards tomorrow! That’s Tengen Toppa! That’s Gurren Lagann!! My drill is the drill THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!!!

and then the chorus kicks in!! chills of hype every time!! i can’t believe i almost forgot to include this one, despite being so iconic of my life and having such fond memories of it.

and there u have it. if you’ve been following me long enough or just know me well enough, there’s probably basically ZERO surprises here lolol, but shrugs, y’know?? i’m pretty transparent abt what i like LOL.

Inazuma Eleven Character Songs

So yesterday I listened for the first time to all character songs (or most of them maybe I’ve missed some) and felt bad because I’m in this fandom since last year and I hadn’t listened them until yesterday. But anyway, I wanted to share my favorites! And I have to say that I’ve listened to them without only thinking in my favorite characters and trying to be objective.

There are two songs that have touched my heart and one of them I don’t even know why because is from a character that I love but isn’t one of my favorites:

- Mai Agare! [Kazemaru’s song] I think everybody in this fandom that knows me, knows that Kazemaru is one my three favorite characters (if not, now you know it hehe) But I don’t like it only because of it, the song has given me goosebumps and all the NOSTALGIA from the first series. Please, listen to it even if you don’t like Kazemaru!

- Star Line [Hiroto’s (now Tatsuya xD) song] As I said, I LOVE Hiroto/Tatsuya, but it’s not one of my favorites. But his song, for some reason, has given me goosebumps too. It’s just such a beautiful song with all the Aliea elements and more importantly, Hiroto/Tatsuya’s feelings… please listen to it too if you haven’t!

The two of them have such a precious lyrics too, if it’s possible search them with subtitles^^

And there are two more that I’ve liked too much for my own good too:

- Houkago Chemistry [Hikaru and Kariya’s song] This is more of a funny and catchy song but for some reason I love it! Both of them need more love [especially Hikaru since Kariya is very popular (although I love that he’s so popular) My poor son deserves everything- he was a ray of sunshine and such a pure boy *O*). And now that I think about it, maybe this song is one of the reasons Kariya/Hikaru is a relative popular ship? Idk but I love this song so much!

-B.E.L.I.E.V.E [Kirino’s song] Okay maybe this one it’s because I freaking love Kirino but #sorrynotsorry xD This song talks about his feelings that are shown in Jeanne’s arc and I just love it. I personaly think that it’s a really good song (And idk if it’s just me, but it has all the Chrono Stones’ feeling on it)

And three more, that I just have to name:

-Ice road [Fubuki’s song] THIS SONG, OH. MY. GOD. THE FEELINGS. It’s not my cup of tea, but come on, this song is practically the most beautiful one and has ALL Fubuki’s feelings. Please listen to it too!

- Yuujou no Keshin [Taiyou’s song] The friendship message in this song is just SO strong and pure that I HAVE to tell everybody to listen to it. And if you like Taiyou even more because it talks about his feelings with everybody.

-Don’t stop! [Ibuki’s song] Galaxy characters deserve some love too because they are great (the plot is something completely different). I simply love this song and Ibuki and I invite everybody to listen to it. I think that it’s catchy and cool!

Please, share your favorite songs too, I don’t usually hear people talking about them and I would love to hear everybody’s opinion! ^^

jkdigi  asked:

As someone who is not a fan of Sorato, but does not dislike this couple either, I must admit that I never imagine this couple when I saw Adventure (in a dub pretty similar to the original). I only notice Sorato in Christmas episode (the first episode of 02 I saw), which totally surprise me. Can you tell me what are the Sorato hints in Adventure?

Many people have written long analyses about this topic and I don’t want to be repetitive. But I believe Adventure perfectly sets the stage for a future Sora/Yamato relationship by showing how compatible they would be as a couple and how it would make sense if they got together:

  • their personalities are similar but not too similar, making them complementary and compatible
  • there are several parallels in their storylines (both come from single-parent households; both leave the group and go on their own at some point; both question their crests; both fall into the dark cave)
  • you see them become closer as Adventure advances (Sora even drops the -kun when adressing him), so by the time the Dark Masters arc comes along they are shown to understand each other very well (such as the scene where Yamato leaves Takeru and Sora supports him, the Dark Cave scene, etc.)
  • Yamato doesn’t get close emotionally to many people: Takeru, Taichi, Jou and Sora are the ones he opens up with
  • their crests (Love and Friendship: yuujou and aijou) - two concept that are strongly associated with each other
  • their strong relationships with Taichi and how making Sora & Yamato a couple makes ‘Taiorato’ a perfectly balanced, equilateral triangle (symbolically)
  • their relationship with Takeru, who forms a familiar/maternal bond with Sora (again, the symbolism is very strong if you see Yamato as the ‘paternal’ figure for Takeru), etc.

Again, no-one is obliged to like the couple or even accept the facts I pointed out as ‘hints’, but it’s all there, albeit in a subtle way, and quite a few people picked it up.
