Obsession and Ignorance contribute to extremism, says FT mufti

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 27, 2015:

Extremist ideologies among militants who frequently use “jihad” as an excuse to legalise their violent acts are the result of ignorance about religion, and obsession with their leaders.

Federal Territory Mufti Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Albakri said ignorance was usually related to lack of information about religion, getting wrong information or not fully understanding an issue.

“This ignorance is a disaster, because with ignorance and the little information that the militants have, they are willing to debate with anyone,” he said during a briefing on the IS, or the so-called Islamic State, at the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) here today.

He said the real concept of debates was to get to the truth, but for those people who were ignorant, it was to see who wins or loses.

Zulkifli also said obsession was a threat because those who were obsessed would stop others who were not of the same mind and whom they considered were wrong.

“This happens a lot as when they are obsessed, they cannot be logical,” he said.

Commenting on the threat of the IS militants, he said no ulama would support the group.

“In fact, two days ago, there was a seminar in Mecca where resolutions were made which reflected how inaccurate and wrong the IS struggle is,” he said.

He added that most ulama from around the world had criticised the IS and disagreed with the way they treated their prisoners, including killing them cruelly.

Zulkifli said enforcement of laws was inadequate to resolve the problem of extremism.

“In the most recent resolutions, most ulama felt that it was necessary to reform the education system on Islam by providing real understanding,” he said.

More than 30 Philippines police commandos have been killed trying to capture South-east Asia’s top Islamist terrorist, who was involved in planning the 2002 Bali bombings.

Malaysian-born Zulkifli Abdhir, one of the US’s most wanted persons with a $US5 million bounty on his head, is believed to have been killed or wounded in the botched operation in a lawless region of the southern Philippines.

Eric Paulsen a ‘serial twitterer’ against Islam, claims Zulkifli Noordin

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16, 2015:

A former Perkasa deputy president has concluded that human rights lawyer, Eric Paulsen suffers from “a disease” called Islamophobia.

Datuk Zulkifli Noordin explained he came to the conclusion based on a series of tweets by the Lawyers for Liberty co-founder.

“We pity him. He is a serial twitterer against Islam and we believe he needs to be fixed and corrected, but in a way that is in accordance to the law,” he told reporters after handing over a memorandum in support of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s actions against those who had insulted Islam.

Paulsen was detained by police on Monday following his tweet that accused the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) of promoting extremism every Friday in its sermons.
