PINOY GROOVE EXPERIENCE (Philippine Popular Music Revisited):

Whitelines - Zsa Zsa Padilla (1985)

Known as the Divine Diva, Zsa Zsa Padilla formally began her music career at age 18, singing with the legendary Manila Sound band Hotdog in 1982.  She pursued her solo career one year later opening for Kuh Ledesma and eventually working with the likes of Leah Navarro, Basil Valdez, and Nonoy Zuniga.  She released her first album, Am I Your Kind of Woman in 1984.  Success soon followed with hits such as “Kahit Na,” “Point of No Return,” and “Mambobola.”  She expanded her success by appearing on television and starring in movies.  She has become a household name and is currently releasing a new album in 2015 called Beginnings.  A truly remarkable talent with a powerful voice and endearing presence on stage and screen.

“Whitelines” is taken from her fourth release Zsa Zsa on Blackgold Records.  Penned by J. Sta. Maria and R. Sacro, “Whitelines” is prime 80′s synth rock. Positively exhilarating, like cruising with the windows down in your yellow 1985 Chevy Camaro IROC with your friends.

Also, happy birthday! (May 28)  Much love to a sweet person and loving mother of three of the coolest young women you’ll ever meet.

Through the years...(RIP Manong Dolphy)

Grabe yung tribute ni Zsa Zsa Padilla kay Manong Dolphy. :’( Especially yung kinanta nya yung ‘Through the Years’.

I can’t remember when you weren’t there
When I didn’t care for anyone but you
I swear we’ve been through everything there is
Can’t imagine anything we’ve missed
Can’t imagine anything the two of us can’t do

Through the years, you’ve never let me down
You turned my life around, the sweetest days I’ve found
I’ve found with you … Through the years
I’ve never been afraid, I’ve loved the life we’ve made
And I’m so glad I’ve stayed, right here with you
Through the years.

Dolphy (1928-2012)

There’s a Filipino song titled “Hiram” by Zsa Zsa Padilla that literally translates in English to “Borrowed (Temporary)” and they’re the most beautiful lyrics I’ve ever heard in any language.

Borrowed (temporary)

There would come a morning, that you’d no longer
kiss these eyes, that would no longer gaze at you
So teach me not to get hurt (to feel no pain)
Even if I am to you,
Just a borrowed (temporary) someone, who should feel no offense
Because you have no idea that even if it’s wrong
Each moment with you was like heaven
Starting from that first kiss
In a love that’s borrowed (temporary)

Do you not feel anything? (Are you that dense?)

Am I not just like everybody else
I get tempted and I stumble
Can you blame me for falling (learning to love you)
Trapped in every second of that borrowed moment

There would come a morning, that you’d no longer
kiss these eyes, that would no longer gaze at you
So teach me not to get hurt (to feel no pain)
Even if I am to you,
Just a borrowed (temporary) someone, who should feel no offense

Oh they may be borrowed, they may be temporary, each second
But I have no regrets (no bitterness), not one
All I know is heaven in your arms
And to you no one would compare (you can’t be replaced)
I would never ever accuse you (place guilt on you)
Even if, (all is) borrowed (temporary)

Maricel: May relasyon ba kayo ng asawa ko?

Zsa-Zsa: Relasyon?

Maricel: Relasyon! Querida, kabit, number 2, mistress, relasyon!

Zsa-zsa: Terry!

Maricel: Wag mo akong ma-Terry-Terry! Yung tanong ko ang sagutin mo! Are you f*cking my husband?!

Zsa-zsa: Minsan!

Day 37: 365 Day Music Challenge

I can’t take it our of context, I’m sorry. The song itself is sad enough, but after Zsa Zsa sang it at Dolphy’s memorial service–the way she sings these lines, it’s heartbreaking.

Mga kabugera!

My good friend Karylle introduced me to Child Haus. It’s a halfway house for children with cancer. Most are from the province who are currently having treatments in Manila. And Child Haus is providing them with free shelter. I really wanted to start a Tumblr account so I can explain more about Child Haus and maybe give you guys a backgrounder about each kid.

Last Christmas, we went full force in helping Child Haus. And I believe it shouldn’t end with the christmas season. Vic and I are already attached to the kids ( I won’t name you my fave *wink*) and we promised ourselves to do as much as we can for them.

The last event we had was the movie day with the kiddies. Thank you to ERYN and KEVIN TAN of Resorts world, ADRIAN DIMACALI of Mary Grace Ensaymada, my chica volunteers, The Divine Diva ZSA ZSA PADILLA, WILL DEVAUGHN, WENDY VALDEZ, SUZY of 89.9, EFREN PENAFLORIDA, BEN CHAN of BENCH, warrior bestie KARYLLE, my hubby TIM YAP and my love VICTOR BASA. We have so much people to thank for making the kids very happy during that day.

I will try to feature my volunteers, the children, and people who are very supportive with our cause. MARAMING MARAMING SALAMAT.

Much Love,
