Dallas Observer Live Show Review of Zorch & Bosnian Rainbows - May 28, 2013

It’s an average night in Trees. The bar is dark, the lights are half-assed, the drinks are flowing and there’s a reasonable crowd. Rock is playing over the PA, and there’s a low chatter. The only clue that something weirder than the usual fare served up at Trees is going on is that I followed a guy with a Mars Volta bumper sticker into the parking lot. We’ve got a two band bill, and no one really knows what to expect. Zorch, hailing from just down I-35, are an Austin duo revealed by the slowly retreating red curtains of Trees to a pretty small audience crowded around the stage just after nine. A pulverizingly loud monotone synth fills the venue along with a kind of humming noise. It’s an auspicious start. I’m not sure if I’m ready for sub-Kid A electro the day after a long holiday weekend.

name: zorch

series: lego mixels series 1 (lego 2014)

notes: another of the lego mixels! this time it’s the second of the infernites, zorch. i do believe that i may be posting them a smidge out of order (flain might be first) but it’s not going to affect anything as far as i’m aware. gotta say though that i really love this one a lot. i was a bit put off by the flames coming directly out of his back, but then he sold me with his eyebrows. he has a funny little uni-brow looking piece that can provide quite a bit of entertainment in itself. i flipped it to go from angry fire-starter to sad toothy puppy.

for more info on this mixel and many more, you can go check out the main site here.

Zorch, Part 8

Eel Blight Decimates Inner Tube Supply; Stifles Economy

From the Associated Press

ELBONIA REPUBLIC - Wars in neighboring Bosnia and Chechen republics have created an unlikely casualty—the once common Elbon Eel. These plucky little creatures which once thrived in the Elbon River and its European tributaries, have seen their numbers severely decline since 1992. Biologists with the European Environment Clearing House say the cause has been credited to the build up of potassium nitrate deposits in the Elbon River.

“Potassium nitrate is the eels’ worst enemy,” says Wenceslas Strchprstskrzkrk, an ichthyologist with EECH. Massive eel kills have been reported, with the rotten eel carcasses winding up downstream in the Black Sea. The greatest impact has been on the Elbonian motorcyclists. The premier motorcycle of Elbonia, the Zorch MK III, uses processed eel carcasses as inner tubes. But the lack of eels has forced many Elbonians to park their coal-fired motorcycles. Since this is the only form of transportation that the Elbonians can afford, workers haven’t reported to factories and offices throughout the tiny nation. Meanwhile at the Zorch factory, engineers have settled in for the duration. They spend their time cultivating new breeds of eels that can tolerate higher levels of potassium nitrate. Some engineers have begun experiments on other species of eels, but to little avail.

> As most of you know, riders of Elbonian cycles have had to make do with bad inner tubes because of the eel blight. There’s a machine shop here in Tampa that’s figured out how to do a Moray eel conversion for these cycles. The advantage is that the much larger Moray eel can be used. Its stout body provides about twice as many tubes as the average Elbon eel. Rims have to be converted, but at $30 per rim, the cost is quite reasonable. The only catch is that the rider has to provide his or her own eel, preferably live, because once these things kick the bucket, they stiffen up in a hurry and are basically useless.

> This conversion is factory-approved, isn’t it?? I mean, it’s no use paying out for the extended warranty if you’re then going to invalidate it, is it??

> Just to add my tuppence-worth, I recently read in a militaria magazine, East-West Revue, that the 3rd Elbonian Shock Army dispatch rider, Mikhail Grozny, has actually complained about the eel inners and the Elbonian nuclear research scientists, who were until recently unemployed, are investigating the use of irradiated eel skins. It seems to be a great success as not only do they last longer, they also have the added advantage that they glow in the dark.

At Fun Fun Fun Fest back in Austin this fall, you missed your first time slot and were rescheduled. But the surprise of the rescheduling made it really exciting. The audience had this, “Oh! They did make it after all!” sort of feeling. What was that like from the performer side?

Omar Rodríguez-López: Well, we were on our way to Austin and our van broke down. And so we actually missed our slot, and so we thought we weren’t gonna be able to play, and we went to Austin anyways because, you know, we have friends there. So we went anyways and then the people from the festival said, hey we had a cancellation, there’s a slot and so we said sure of course, so then we just went and we played. And it’s a good example of something that could be seen as a failure: if you have this thing that’s scheduled, and you’re supposed to do your part and show up but then, the van broke down. And so you failed to meet your end of the bargain to show up, and you’re like ‘oh man, we missed that’, and so you missed an opportunity. For somebody else that might be the end of the world, “oh we

You ready to feel like a real jerk for all the times you chose to not practice the guitar and instead went out and did silly things with your friends like eating so much cereal it wouldn’t all fit in your mouth? Well you better get ready, because according to both the internet and the cool old lady down my street who is really into math rock, Tera Melos are going on tour this fall. They’re starting off in September as support for Minus the Bear, and once October rolls around they’ll headline with Zorch, and a little bit later, be joined by Fang Island. Tera Melos, Zorch, and Fang Island are all Sargent House label buddies so you know they’re going to get into some zany hijinks and high-five a lot, all while playing their instruments better than you could ever dream of doing.

Tera Melos are touring on their latest release, this year’s X’ed Out. Zorch has a new one out this year, too, called ZZOORRCCHH. Minus the Bear and Fang Island both put out albums last year, because apparently all of these bands are also better at actually putting out records than any of us. You can watch the video for Tera Melos’ “Weird Circles” above, but only do so if you are prepared to see a bunch of fellahs bragging about how they’re so good at music that they’ve transcended “mere practicing.” Now they apparently spend most of their time puttering around the way you wish you could, by eating breakfast like sloppy goofballs and getting in some serious chill-time with their puppet bros.
