What do you think of the female character design in Street Fighter series?

They seem to run the gamut of “oh that’s kind of cute” to “that’s a little racy.” Lately, its felt like they lean a little further in the “racy” direction. Cammy’s basically just wearing a swim suit, C. Viper’s snowing off her chest (and looks like she’s dressed for a night club rather than a street fight), and both Juri and Laura are super thirsty in a way that makes me kind of uncomfortable.

Which I guess is less a problem with Street Fighter itself and more just a problem with female character designs in a lot of games. If there’s one thing I hate more than anything else in the world, it’s feeling like I’m being pandered to. I hate the obvious trick of “this girl is sexy which means we know you’re going to like her.” It’s like snake oil (ahem), and too many companies out there use it like snake oil to sell you things you don’t actually need because they count on you being too distracted by the sexy lady to notice the unwanted garbage they’re really peddling.

And that mentality is deeply ingrained in video games. And I hate it. It makes me furious. Which, like, sucks, right, because there are people out there who genuinely love these sexy characters not because they’re a huge dumb Al Bundy moron reading Big Jugs Magazine, but because they genuinely think that character is cool. And not even men, either! There are women out there who like other sexy women! And that doesn’t make them bad people! When in the right context, I like sexy women!

But it’s become such a knee jerk reaction for me that when I see a character like Laura with her gigantic cleavage and the fight intro where she caresses her body seductively, I reflexively roll my eyes and say “Ugh, no more.” It feels like my plate is always, constantly overflowing with sexy video game ladies who never stop showing off their “assets” for the player, either intentionally or because the programmer driving the camera wants to leer. Especially in the fighting game space – you have 75% of the cast of Dead or Alive, Skullgirls, the aforementioned Street Fighters, Sarah Bryant from Virtua Fighter, Nina Williams in Tekken (aka Sarah Bryant), Cassie Cage in Mortal Kombat X… the list goes on and on, these are just the ones off the top of my head.

I think I’ve earned the right to say “Enough already.” I like sexy ladies, but I have my limits, and those limits were reached many years ago. If it’s Christmas every day it stops being special and starts getting really annoying.

But for the Street Fighter characters that aren’t the stereotypical “sexy lady”? I mean, I tend to gravitate towards playing Chun-li. I think she’s cool. Sakura’s alright. Karin’s alright. etc. It’s not all bad.
