zen garden

These beautiful sand patterns were created by the Sisyphus Machine, an elaborate kinetic drawing machine invented by motion control artist Bruce Shapiro.

It’s a 21st century interpretation of the traditional Japanese Zen garden that uses magnets to propel steel balls over a thin layer of sand, creating intricate, ever-changing shapes and patterns in the sand.

A former physician, Shapiro has been experimenting with computerized motion control for 25 years now. He’s currently developing a tabletop consumer version of his marvelous Sisyphus Machine. Click here for additional information.
