Murals depicting anti-formula one graffiti, Bahrain.
Bahraini activist Zainab al-Khawaja: “Does the world not care about what’s happening in Bahrain? Formula One is a message sent to the people of Bahrain that the world does not care. The government uses this event to whitewash and give a different picture of what’s actually happening in the country. While people are suffering every day, they want people on the outside to be seeing this race and not all the images of people who are dying and being tortured.”
Anti-regime protests have been held on an almost daily basis across Bahrain since 2011. The demonstrators are demanding that the ruling Al Khalifah family relinquish power and let a just system representing all Bahrainis be established.
