… and this a “tǔlóu, or earthen building, a traditional communal residence in Fujian, usually surrounding a central shrine. We have visited some of them and this one is called "裕昌楼” (Yuchang Lou).
Yuchanglou was built in 1308 and is one of the oldest existing Tulou. This five-story earth building is most famous for its tilted pillars. The most extreme ones are slanted at 15-degree angle. Yuchanglou has been like this for more than 600 years and remained intact until today. There are still around 20 000 of tulous in Fujian and all the people from the few previous posts still live in them.
