It was nearing midnight as the Impala sped down another nameless road as you and Dean made your way back to the bunker, nothing but Dean’s tapes playing through the silent cab.
It was one of Dean’s quieter mixes, the one’s he saved for the long nighttime drives, or after a hunt had gone wrong, when the thought of silence was maddening and AC/DC just didn’t feel right.
As one song ended, the next began; the soft tappings of a classic 80′s keyboard filling the car. You smile. You were a sucker for corny, romantic, rock songs, and this was one of your favorites.
As the voice of Steve Perry drifts through the speakers, you hum along, your fingers tapping to the beat along the armrest of the passenger door.
Highway run into the midnight sun Wheels go round and round You’re on my mind.
You close your eyes, letting the music relax you into the leather seat, ignoring the shooting pain in your lower back from being tossed across a room by a vamp.
As the guitar picks up, your hand balls into a fist, drumming along in the air to the beats as the tempo quickens.
They say that the road Ain’t no place to start a family Right down the line It’s been you and me.
As you feel yourself drifting away to the music, your eyes bolt open as another voice accompanies Perry’s.
“Circus life. Under the big top worlddddd. We all need the clowns, to make us smile.”
Your eyes shoot to Dean’s, your gaze pulling his away from the road to meet yours.
You had never heard Dean sing before. Hum–all the time–but never full out, actually sing like he was now. Your eyes go wide as his voice matches Perry’s note for note, shocked to find badass, legendary hunter, Dean Winchester, has a secret talent; singing.
A smile spreads across his face, carefree wrinkles forming in the corners of his eyes.
“Through space and time, always another showwwww!”
As your mouth hangs open, Dean just shrugs at you, his eyebrows raising in a silent, “why not?”
“Wondering where I am, lost without you.”
Steve Smith bangs on the drummers, bringing the beat back up.
“And being apart ain’t easy on this love affair.” You sing at him. “Two strangers learn to falllllllllllllllllllllll in love again,” you throw your head back. “I get the joy of rediscovering you.” You reach out towards Dean. “Oh, boy, you standddddd by me.” Dean laughs, shaking his head as you keep your arm outstretched towards him.
“I’m forever yourssssss.” He joins in with you, his eyes jumping back and forth between you and the road. “Faithfully.” You quietly finish, the guitars and keyboards slowly taking you to the end.
“Whooa, oh-oh-ooh.” You sing to each other.
“Whooa, oh-oh-ooh, oh.” Both of your voices growing louder, competing for the lead vocals.
“Whooa, oh-oh-oh, oh-whoooooa-oh!” You shout at each other, each of you desperately holding the note as long as you can, your voices cracking as neither of you can hold on for much longer.
Dean breaks first, his chest heaving as he gasps in air. You burst out laughing, falling over yourself as Dean coughs, trying to catch his breath.
Faithfully I’m still yours
“That was perfect.” You wheeze in between your laughs, unable to remember the last time you were able to enjoy something so simple, but so much fun.
“You tell Sam about this and your dead.” He warns with a finger pointed in your direction, his lips upturned and his voice holding nothing but this small moment of happiness with you.
I’m forever yours Ever yours
“Promise.” You cross your fingers over your heart and his lips purse as he tries not to laugh at you.
