Penthesilea’s name ( Πενθεσιλεια ) comes from the Greek words penthos ( πένθος ) and laôs ( λαός ). Penthos appears in Greek mythology as the personification of grief and sorrow and as you may expect, his name means that. Meanwhile laôs means the people. Therefore her name is usually translated to mean ❝ mourned by men ❞ or more literally ❝ mourned by the people ❞ which I find ironic considering she did make Achilles mourn for her after her death.
