If you’re a parent and your child opens up to you about being scared or anxious or depressed or suicidal, you have to realize that it takes a lot of courage to come talk to you, and that they’re probably not telling you 100% of what they’re feeling because they’re afraid of how you’ll react. So please don’t invalidate your child’s struggles, tell them that others have it worse, mock their issues, brush their unhappiness and mental disorders off as typical teenage/youth behavior, or demean them in general. And please don’t ignore them if they come to you, just because it’s difficult to parent someone who is unhappy or who has mental disorders.
