your fae

anonymous asked:

I just read on your faetales research blog that Gwyn is an INTJ. I've always related to Gwyn the most out of all of your characters. I'm an INFJ and I just find that really interesting! I don't know if you've ever answered this question before but I'm curious- which Meyers Briggs type would Augus be? What about Ash and Gulvi? Do you know your own type?

I’ve actually written about this before a fair bit, so I’ll link :D

Myers Briggs for the core Fae Tales characters. And some thoughts. (I came to the conclusion by doing individual quizzes for all of them, and answering how I feel they’d answer. I don’t pick personality types before I write characters or anything like that).

Further expansion on Gwyn’s manifestation of self-confidence as an INTJ.

More thoughts about Augus.

(And I’m an INTJ and pretty much always have been).

How do I politely tell my cousin (who knows I'm ace) that I'm ok with him talking about his sex life, but I don't want him to go into as much detail as possible?

I believe you can be firm, but very polite about his shared conversations with you.

“I require a hard limit on our explicit conversations. I don’t mind some details, but I cannot allow you to share more than that. Not as a detriment to your life or your relationships, but for my anxiety and comfort zone.”

People rightly get miffed about any implication that their sexuality is shameful, so it’d do good to make sure that’s not the case. A half-decent person would appreciate your boundaries.

I've been imagining Gwyn looking similar to Varro for the Spartacus TV series. I started rewatching Spartacus out of boredom, and when Varro appeared on screen I thought he could be a good fit for Gwyn - tall, ripped warrior's body, loads of blond curls, good-looking but at the same time kind of cute. It was mainly the hair. Quote my housemate: "I want to boing his curls".

While Gwyn’s curls are way way floofier (and also his shoulders are broader because he’s a swordmaster and not like…beefing out in a gymnasium - the physique of professional sword fighters who wear medieval style plate armour is actually a fair bit different to what we’d associate with being ‘ripped’ today - and being ‘ripped’ today is often not at all functional for warriors of the past - but that’s all we have to cast swordfighters in period TV and movies so….the inaccuracies remain), I can definitely see why folks like yourself would see Gwyn/Varro as being compatible!

(That makes way more sense to me than the Augus/Hiddleston comparison anyway - though that’s just me being a stupidly fussy author and not like, anything to do with reality where people could facecast Augus with Sportacus if they wanted to and I can’t stop them - all I can do is put the descriptions in the text, which people are welcome to ignore as much as they like, that’s the gift the reader gives :D lol - (I know that, because I frequently ignore author descriptions, especially if I accidentally got an image in my head before I got a really thorough description; this is also the same mechanism of how a billion people thought Rue was white in Hunger Games incidentally, despite actual descriptors - people see what they like and it has very little to do with what I say)).

(But the floof of Gwyn’s curls are epic. Like, if you pressed down on the top of the curls you’d at least go through about two good inches of just hair before you reached his scalp. (Incidentally Gwyn with wet hair is hilarious. His hair is actually fairly long, but because it boings up into huge ridiculous curls, you don’t realise that until he’s sporting the wet dog look and Augus is trying not to laugh at him). But otherwise like I’m looking at pictures of Varro right now like y’know, he would’ve been good to reference about a billion years ago when artists started asking: ‘what actor does Gwyn look like?’ Him along with the dude who plays Dyson from Lost Girl (sans facial hair) and I think there was like an ice skater dude as well.)

Beginner Witch Tips

WARNING: I am a sarcastic butthole and it shows through out this hot mess of a post. This is some random craft junk I have learned in my days of practicing witchcraft

Witch craft is not magic.

I don’t care what you have heard. Witchcraft is not magic. It can not turn your eyes different colors. It can not make you into a animal. You will not be able to control the weather or summon wind with your fingers. Ghosts will not do as you say. This is not Harry Potter. Case closed

Intent over tools

Do you think it’s gonna matter if you use a butter knife as an athame? Or you have to sub a white candle for another color because you don’t have the funds to buy that color? Or you had to leave out an ingredient because you don’t have it or you’re allergic? No, it’s not. Witchcraft (to me) is about mind over matter. If you are making an effort for your God/god/goddess/deity/elf/fae/etc it isn’t gonna matter what or how you got there, but the intent you had getting there

Cursing and hexing is up to you and your beliefs

Totally up to you if you believe that this is okay or not. However, if you don’t like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s wrong. If they ask you how you feel you can tell them it’s not your thing. If you do like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s fine and try to get them to accept it. If they ask you about it, you can tell them that you are into it

You do not have to have an alter

It’s up to you and your practice. And if you can where you are etc. If you want one and can not have one, draw one or, my favorite, Set up a pinterest board for your god/goddess/fae/elf/deity etc. and save things that you thing relate to them.

It’s not about fancy stuff

This goes back to intent over tools, as long as you are comfortable with what you are doing and using, do it and use it. I use salsa and yogurt containers, coffee filters taped together, M&M tubes, and envelopes to keep crap in. I use a 99¢ Wal-Mart bandanna to do spells on that I got from Girl Scout camp and it has rainbow peace signs all over it. Do I care? Nope. Does anyone else care or will they judge you? Nope. we are all in the same boat here.

Hand making things is way too underrated

I LOVE hand making things. Whether you are good or bad at it, it is a good way to save money, and personalize it just for you. Example: I made tarot cards out of printer paper that I cut out and wrote the card name, and definition of what it means (to me) and I love them. Pencil wand? Yas queen. DIY cauldron out of play-dough? Frick me u p daddy.

DONT EAT/SMOKE/DRINK SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT

You’d think I would have to include this bUT
Some things are okay to consume. Sometimes if taking a certain medicine you can’t consume that. Sometimes you are allergic to one thing, and in turn you will be allergic to that thing too. Sometimes you are pregnant and it’S HIGHLY DANGEROUS TO CONSUME THINGS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT DOES

Never ignore professional medical advice and help in favor of witchcraft methods.

Spirit workers

Not nice spirits can attach to people who have depression and anxiety more so than people who don’t

There are good and bad spirits. if one makes you feel comfomy, do not feel bad for asking it to leave/getting rid of it

Don’t ask your tarot cards every time you have a question

This happens a lot. Especially when you get a new deck and it’s so new and shiny and you can’t w a i t to get your grubby little hands on it and do crap >:D but you don’t want to get into the habbit of “ohgoshgollybatman I have to go to the store, okay let’s see if I’ll get hit by a car… oh and do I really need the applejuice..”  or “do I REALLY need this plant..” bc the answer to that is always yes duh

Divination is not for predicting the future

Now stay with me, it is for guiding you in the future. It can not tell you what day you are going to die, who you are going to marry, etc

The future is not written in stone

Let’s sayyyyy you do a simple past, present, and future reading with tarot, and you get a bad reading for the future, it doesn’t matter. That is how it is going right now, now you can see what you need to change etc

You dont need a fancy journal for a grimore or book of shawdows

Heckadoodle I use a binder and notebook paper so I can move stuff around. I just write with a pencil and pen, and color with dollar store crayons or collered pencils.
Now, you may be thinking, “Oh but, it’s a nice binder right?” Lemme stop you right there. It is falling apart, needs to be ducktaped, has a picture of my doggo inside and I’ve used it for school for abouutt.. 7 years?
Summin’ it up: It don’t gotta be fancy

If you forget to blow out candles set a timer on your phone

I do this all the freaking time and I’ll leave a candle out, and then here comes mother. Closet underage witches know the struggle. Trying to explain why you have a burning candle left in your room. Or if you are adult and have to adult after a spell or whatever and leave the house and come back to the candle just sittin’ there. Burning away. (my mom did this once and it caught her table on fire)
Timer. Yep.

You don’t have to know a certain language

This is more focused to me bc i am nerd but okie dokie
I know Latin from school, therefore I mix it into my spells (like some on @witchy-recipes-and-things) and provide a translation. I don’t want anyone to think you have to have a certain language for your craft.

How to Ouija

Tbh this is too long already so if you want another post on it tell me and I’ll make one and link it

Sigils can be drawn everywhere

In your phone case, in your wallet, in a shoe, under fingernail polish, under seats, wherever whatever-I can also elaborate more on this

TAROT IS PRONOUNCED “TARO”

CONSENT IS KEY

When doing love spells, consent from the other person is a must.

You can be a christian, athiest, pagan, whatever, and still do witchcraft

It is about the craft, not religion

Witchcraft is not a religion, Wicca is

And you do not have to be Wiccan to partake in Witchcraft

Sage doesn’t have to be in cone shape to burn it

I put rubbed sage meant for cooking on a metal plate and torch the sucker Shane Dawson style but with one of the long lighters, then run around my house in my underware screaming “MAY THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPEL YOU BITCH” in Latin

When cleansing

OPEN.THE.WINDOWS.WHEN.DEALING.WITH.SMOKE
Trust your witch mother who is allergic to everything and is an asthmatic, open the windows and doors.
Also, as the smoke leaves you room through the windows or whatever, the spirits/bad vibes/etc leave with it

You don’t have to believe everything you read

Witchcraft is how YOU feel about things. No matter how other people feel about things

You can have your own corresponces for things

Like I think cinnamon is hot, deals with the sun, direction south, used for healing love etc., but it can be totally different for you

Divination doers do not have to be witches and witches do not have to be divination doers

S T U D Y

Can not stress this enough. This is the best thing to do even if you can not practice your craft where you are atm. knowledge is power.

So here is a list I’ve complied :D (yes I’ve made all of these, I was too bored to ask people’s permission to add things, sue me) (All of the spells are all religion inclusive)

thesuninperigee  asked:

hello I would like to request the recipe for fairy cakes out of pure curiosity with zero intent to make anything

*gives you a stern measuring look*

For the sponge:

  • 110g/4oz butter softened at room temperature
  • 110g/4oz caster sugar/baking sugar
  • 2 eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 110g/4oz self-raising flour
  • 1-2 tbsp milk

For the icing/frosting

  • 300g/10½oz icing sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp water
  • 2-3 drops food colouring of your choice.
  • Any other decorations you might want.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F and line 2 x 12-hole fairy cake tins (cupcake tins) with paper cases. Cream together your butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, and stir in the vanilla extract MAKING SURE YOU STIR CLOCKWISE AND ABSOLUTELY NOT THE OTHER WAY IN AROUND UNLESS YOU WANT THE FAE ESCAPING

Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon. Add a little milk until the mixture is a soft dropping consistency and spoon the mixture into the paper cases until they are half full. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes, or until golden-brown on top and a skewer inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture. Stir in the food colouring and then drizzle over the cakes, sprinkle with decorations if you have them and set aside until the icing hardens.

Devour before the fae folk find another way to find you.

Lauren isn’t expecting much from her twenty second birthday. All the important milestones had already passed, all of them leaving her empty handed. No Hogwarts letter had arrived on her eleventh birthday, no mermaid tail had appeared on her thirteenth. The enormously prophetic sixteenth year – the year famously known for having destinies foretold, for being kidnapped by gods, for falling into a ridiculous love triangle – had come and gone with nothing of note. The most magical part of her twenty first birthday had been that’d she’d manage to consume that amount of alcohol without dying

No grand epics begin on the day of someone’s twenty second birthday.

This is because of those unlucky enough to be chosen at this tender age – most don’t ever make it back.

Dead men tell no tales, after all.

~

(Dead women do. The bones and bubbling corpses of hundreds of daring, unfortunate women are screaming warnings and fury at the next girl to join their ranks of the lost and forgotten.

But no one listens to a woman’s screaming.

No one will listen to your screaming either.

Sorry, dear. )

~

She wakes up and goes to the bathroom to get ready for the day.

This is a hasty decision, of course, although she does not know it at the time.

This may be her last morning. If she’d known, maybe she would have savored it. Snuggled into her warm sheets, pressed her face into the softness of her pillow, pulled the comforter about her bare shoulders, the most instinctual and simple of comforts.

But then again. Maybe not.

There is also an instinctual, twisted pleasure in ripping off the bandaid.

you’re not supposed to fall in love with your roommate.

it’s not just an Elsewhere University rule, one of the many you pick up during your first few months there; it’s an every-university rule.

but she is so pretty, and you are so weak when it comes to pretty girls.

at first, it is the way the sunlight shimmers on her feather-dark hair. the way her eyes sparkle, just a little bit too much like mica. the way she moves, like a shadow sliding over bricks.

but then it is the rattle when she laughs, like her chest is hollow. it is her endless fascination for anything human. it is the way she twists her neck to smile at you when you walk into the room. it is her dedication to finishing every homework assignment, even though someone like her doesn’t have to do any homework assignments, or go to class at all.

you’re not supposed to fall in love with someone who never sleeps.

but you’ve never been good at keeping to the rules– your religion is a time-worn mixture of judaism, agnosticism, and the bits and bobs of whatever your favorite grandmother is (she never quite tells you), and you’re still not sure what your gender is (or your sexuality). old rules, unflexible, unaccepting, feel like brittle prison bars.

besides, at elsewhere u, the normal rules seem a little more fluid. changeable. as long as you keep to the traditions of the school, everything else can slide by, just a bit.

you help her keep up with the homework and decipher a few of the more colloquial phrases that your american history professor likes to use. she helps you stay unnoticed on the campus. when you walk next to her, the shadows accept you as one of them.

you ask permission before you hold her hand. you ask permission to grab her dinner when you’re getting yours. you ask permission to look at her when she’s not looking at you. she tells you yes, again and again, and again. the fae cannot lie.

your best friend, aeryn, has always been fascinated by the fae. she tells you not to trust your pretty roommate. she tells you that their rules are too complicated to understand. but your roommate, but she is like you; she was not made for rules. you begin to think that perhaps she and aeryn have a lot in common; aeryn came to elsewhere u for the fae. your roommate came for the humans.

so she tells you yes, when you ask her things; and then she starts to make requests of her own. she asks if she can hear about your childhood. she asks how much you know about other cultures. she asks if you really like her, no, like-like her, she thinks she heard the term from one of the human kids in her biology class.

you blush. you tell her yes, again and again and again.

you’re not supposed to date one of the fae. that IS an elsewhere university rule, but one that’s so obvious that nobody would ever even think to tell you.

you don’t think much of the rules, the two of you; sometimes you walk through Elsewhere with her to get to class faster, and sometimes she uses your laptop (with you as a conduit) to explore the internet. you get rid of the iron and salt, you have; except a few nails near the door (even if your roommate is fae, that doesn’t stop anyone else from trying to take your stuff).

she steals your sweatshirts. you take some of the pebbles on her bedside table to play with when you can’t pay attention during class. she teases you with extremely stretched truths, which is the best she can do about the lying rule. you buy her increasingly outrageous types of soda on amazon.

she lets her glamour drop, junior year. it is an accident. you come into the room you share, and find her studying, seven feet tall, with antlers and spindly fingers. her shimmery eyes look scared when you approach. you smile, and tell her the truth– you still like her without the glamour. how could you not, when she tells the worst puns on campus and keeps you up until 3am watching vine compilations?

you didn’t know that your first kiss would involve three rows of teeth.

you are not supposed to take the fae with you when you graduate.

but would any of the staff dare to complain if one of the students leaving campus on graduation day happens to have a suitcase full of seaglass and feathers for eyebrows?

and if the neighbors think you and your wife are a little odd, they’d probably be justified. but it’s quite okay with you, you think as you fall asleep with a phantom tail wrapped tightly around your leg. after all, nobody else in town has as much fun just looking at memes. nobody else’s s.o. can make the fire in the fireplace turn blue just by winking at it.

you’re not supposed to fall in love with your roommate. but you do it anyway, and so does she.

The fae

Living in Ireland I heard many stories about the fae.About they’re kind nature, the peaceful woodland spirits, playful tricksters, or even malicious beings.

Here I will give some ways to appease them, and ward them. I will also tell about dangerous fae and how to ward them.

AVOIDING FAIRIES

In Ireland children were told to keep away from fairy mounds, fairy circles, certain places in the woods, certain trees, and some strange places. Fairy mounds can be identified as strange lone hills, often found in odd place. Fairy circles are mushroom circles. They are a naturally occurring pattern, however they are believed to be portals the their realm. And stepping in one may be dangerous. Steer clear of certain trees. It is believed that fae live in them, and if disturbed they would not be happy. Notable trees to stay away from include hazel, thorn, alder, and oak. An example of a strange place would be strange rock formations in a field, and that if disturbed or moved would upset the fae who made them.

Farmers didn’t go to their mill or barns at night. It was believed that the fae used the cover of darkness to grind their grain. Disturbing them while they worked could result in you having a failed crop or other curses.

Certain bodies of water were said to be the homes of kelpies, Corrigans, and other water fae. If you came to these waters alone, you could be pulled in, or lured to your deaths (corrigans are said to beautiful creatures that lure you to your death, were they drown you.) They would drown their victims, forcing their spirits to live in the fae realm forever.

WARDING FAE

Certain flowers such as primroses, were layed on the windowsills and hung over doors. This ensured that he house was kept safe from the fae.

Garlands were made from marsh marigolds. These were placed over the barn doors. This protected the horses from being ridden to death by the fae.

However, the most notable flower to protect yourself against the fae is St. John’s Wort. Wearing this flower provided the wearer protection from fairy magic and tricks. Sometimes my grandmother would scatter petals around the outside of the house, to try to provide protection.

Some said holly berries would repel them. (Unknown why. Unlike the others I was never told this. Maybe someone could clarify.)

A four-leafed clover would allow you to see the fae, even through their glamours, or invisibility. However, this would only work once. An old tradition was to sew them into clothing, or even a little bag (this is to be worn round the neck, though some say it just has to be held) this allowed the user to see them for every clover they had sewn.

Though these are quite nice forms of protection, iron is always the best form of protection. Many believe that iron burns the fairy. Some legends say that the crafted their weapons out of silver and gold because they couldn’t use the iron. If you kept an iron nail in your pocket the fae would be unable to take you to their realm. Often iron knives, sheers, and other sharp object were hung over or near the crib of a baby. This was to prevent the baby from being stolen and swapped with a changling child. ( I don’t recommend doing this as it could be dangerous to the baby.) Sometimes horseshoes, nails, or arrowheads would be placed over doors to stop fae from entering the house or room. An iron ring was worn to protect people, it was told that the fae could not go near the person who wears it.

APPEASING FAE

To be protected from them, and to even form a relationship with the fae; one must respect them, trust them, and leave offerings for them.

Leaving bread and milk out for them was said to protect the household that did it. It was also believed that one may gain their favour by doing this. This is also a notable way of appeasing the cat síth. Not only do they like bread and milk, they also like butter, cream, sugar, ale, honey, whiskey, and I find that they like dark chocolate.

If you’re crossing a body of water, or passing by a well you may drop a piece of silver in, or a coin in for the fae that lives in it.

Ever here the saying that if you spill salt you should throw some over your right shoulder? Well that applies to the fae. If salt is spilled one may throw some over their right shoulder so that the fae can have their share.

Many of the nicer variety were insulted when they saw human mortals lacking in hospitality to one another and treating each other badly. It’s was said that they would punish people like this very harshly. However, if you were kind and honest to people they were said to treat you nicely, or leave you be.

DANGEROUS FAE

corrigans- A form of water sprite. They appear as beautiful beings who sing melodies like sirens. They mostly appear at night on a full moon. In sunlight they’re glamour goes away and their true ugly form is revealed. stay clear of bodies of water and the woods
Dullahan- The headless horseman. He is seen often in the country riding a dead horse with eyes like fire. He often has a whip made out of a spine. He roams the countryside looking for the dead. If you see him he is said to slash your eyes with his whip. Gold is said to ward them for a while.
Amadan Dubh- VERY DANGEROUS. The trickster fae. He’s a madman. Often seen dancing on lone hills to ghostly music. Cannot be reasoned with. He can place powerful, harmful curses on people. I do not know of any ways to ward him. (Maybe someone can clarify?)
Alp-luarcha- If you think it has crawled in your throats after falling asleep at a stream or other body of water, eat salted food. This will make it thirsty, and make it leave.
Bean sídhe or banshee- The only thing I know of is an iron ring, though when a person is dying nothing can keep her away as she wails.
Cat síth- it loiters around graveyards and open graves to steal the souls of those who have recently died. To try to distract it one may try dancing, singing, or telling riddles. This gives time for the souls of the deceased to pass on so that it cannot get them. I was also told that on Halloween (Samhain) a saucer of milk should be left out, this will provide good luck and protection, while those that didn’t would be cursed. If you are ever filled with a sense of dread and see a black cat with a tuff of white fur walk away slowly and then place a saucer of milk outside, then pray that this will be enough to appease it.
Boggart- It’s a malicious form of fae that takes over houses. Somewhat like a poltergeist. They cannot be reasoned with, and any attempts to appease them will annoy them. They don’t like holy water, crosses, iron, or agrimony. However, sometimes an exorcism is necessary. A family friend had to get this once.
Changling- To stop a child from being swapped keep a close eye on them, put them in a warm well lit room, stitching red thread in baby clothes and blankets was said to prevent them from being swapped, as well as hanging iron sheers or knives over the crib, or having them close by.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or any clarifications feel free to message me.

Subtle Magic to Practice Anywhere

Tiny Bits of Energy Work
Work on building up up energy in your palms, fingertips, or the soles of your feet if you’re in one place at a time. It can help pass time by with a little personal productivity if you’re stuck by a register or desk for a while.

Make Small Decisions
Even if it’s only in your inner monologue, making a decision helps you practice focusing your intent and clears your mind for other purposes. If you decided right now that you prefer pie wholeheartedly over cake, as irrelevant as it seems, it would spark a certainty in you. Practicing certainty allows you a confidence in your decisions and intent that can help your magic overall.

Offer Scraps
When a friend offers you the last bit of their food, some french fries or a bit of their cake, doesn’t it make you feel happy? Like a small, “aww, they care” moment? Offer something to your deities, the fae you work with, spirits, or even just the Universe whenever you eat. Treat your witchcraft associates, no matter the tangibility, as friends. Even the smallest gifts can build favor.

Work on Communication Clarity
The right word choice can make or break a spell. It takes time to word an incantation well or decide on the best way to mentally draw out your message in visualization. Start by talking to a friend or coworker and asking them if there’s anyway you can be better understood when telling a story, asking a question, or giving an answer. How clear you are in communication can benefit you insanely in the long run.

Mentally Shop for Dream Supplies
Visualizing your ideal supplies can bring can you bring you closer to finding them as well as it just being a really good way to practice visualization. Two birds, one stone!

Budget/Recycling witch tip:

Reuse those tins your tea candles are in!
🕯Use as an offering dish for your spirits/guardians/fae/deities. Fill them with fresh water, wine, scented oils, herbs, candy, etc.
🕯Put a layer of salt in one to keep your space clear between cleansings. Put a crystal or jewelry onto the salt to cleanse them.
🕯Put a few herbs in the tin and then fold the edges down to make a closed container. (please don’t bury this or throw it in any rivers or whatever. you probably know the drill by now.)
🕯Use a knife (carefully!!!) to cut up the tin into little sharp pieces. If you want, you can then fold them up so they form little spikes (again, carefully! use pliers, not your fingers). Use the sharp pieces or spikes for protection or cursing bottles and jars, like you would use nails or pins.

On the Fae

Okay, so I’ve noticed a lot of misinformation and misunderstandings about the Fae.  What they are, what the Courts are, etc.  I’m writing this out to provide some guidance based on my experience with them.

So, to start, I’ll give you my definition of what makes a Fae, well… Fae.  So to me the Fae are defined as a non-human entity with human cunning that has never been human, but was not created with the purpose of serving a god (Otherkin are a whole other beast, which I don’t want to discuss in this post). Pretty general, no?  That’s on purpose, and though it isn’t perfect, it’s the best definition I’ve come up with to date.  It excludes things like vampires, which I would never consider Fae.  However, it troublingly includes werecreatures, which with some exceptions I don’t consider Fae.

In my experience, Fae can include things like the Yōkai in Japanese mythology. This is based on meeting the definition stated above.  However, this does not give me or any other person license to interact with beings that belong to closed cultures.  Just because it meets the definition, does not mean people should run willy-nilly about, interacting or interfering with beings that generally tend to not wish to interact with those who are not a part of their culture.

Courts and Manners

Moving on to the Courts. Firstly, there are more than the Seelie and Unseelie Courts.  There are Winter and Summer, Night and Day Courts, as well as numerous others.  I’m sure you’ve noticed a trend.  The Fae like to set themselves as opposites, and they tend to be quite territorial.  I have noticed that the Fae tend not to only have one version of the Courts.  There are small Courts scattered across territory, much like how human history had scattered kingdoms all through history.  However, I should add that speaking about the Courts only includes trooping Fae.  There are solitary Fae as well.

Good and evil.  I’ve seen this one a lot on Tumblr, especially in regards to Seelie and Unseelie Fae.  Unseelie are not evil.  Seelie are not good. Morality is a bit of a grey zone among the Fae, and you must remember just because they do not have the same moral code as you, that does not make them evil.  Interacting with any spirit under the assumption that they are going to be ‘good’ or ‘evil’ is extremely dangerous.  The Courts tend to attract Fae of certain temperaments and behaviours.

Now, let’s talk about species and appearances.  I’ve found it’s a pretty common misconception that the Court Fae, and Fae in general are tiny creatures no bigger than the palm of your hand.  This is definitely not the case.  Court Fae can vary in size from the size of my thumb to giant creatures. Usually these extremes in sizes tend not to be the rulers of the Court, but they do tend to be things like Knights. Most rulers of Courts that I’ve encountered tend to be approximately human size.  However, this does not mean they look human.  And I’m not saying ‘oh, they’re unearthly and beautiful.’  I’ve seen Fae that vary greatly; from the stunningly beautiful, to the strange, to the grotesque, to monstrous.  They’re incredibly varied creatures, and though they fall under an umbrella term I think it would be a mistake to assume they’re homogenous.

Values

Because I mostly see questions regarding Unseelie and Seelie Court Fae, below is what I’ve seen in regards to what they value:

Unseelie tend to value bloodsport, sacrifice, chaos, and the like.  Generally, they tend to be more welcoming of outsiders.  I should add that Unseelie tends to refer to the fact that they dwell under the hills.

Seelie tend towards a rigid sense of honor and dishonor, superiority to humanity, and have a strong sense of justice.  They are less welcoming of outsiders.  They spend most of their time above ground.

It should be noted that both of these Courts have participated in Tithes, where a mortal is sacrificed to appease those more powerful than the Fae.

Offerings and Bargains

Speaking of which, let’s discuss offerings and what working with them is like.  There’s a lot of things you can do to attract Fae. I recommend you tread carefully, especially if you are working in places like North America and are contacting European Fae or the like.  Not that you cannot work with them, but you need to have a basic understanding of the land.  In fact, I would say this goes for anywhere that experienced aggressive colonization. Make sure you make offerings or do things to appease the local spirits that have been there first.  Try planting native things to your area, or offering them local foods. They can turn on you if you create an influx of invaders, and create extra chaos in your life.  The Fae can be pretty open to interacting with mortals, but they’re very keen on bargaining. Be very specific on what you want out of a relationship and deal, and don’t immediately accept any offer they provide, otherwise you may end up getting the short end of the stick.  They tend to expect you to work hard to please them, but they will always keep up their end of a deal.  I also recommend erring on the side of extreme politeness, as no one wants to have an angry Faerie lurking around their house creating chaos.  As for offerings and such, I would look to whatever was typically offered to them in the past, or to simply ask them once you’ve struck a bargain.  As spiritual partners and companions, they can be extremely demanding, and want you to work hard and quickly.  When you first begin working with them, they will treat it like a business transaction. Overtime, as they get to know you, they may choose to befriend you, and you will develop a relationship over time. Be patient, and remember although they aren’t human, you have to earn friendship the same way you would with a person.

You know what I really wanna see in the next part of Aelin’s story? Aelin interacting with the cadre in their fae forms. Give me Rowan resting on her shoulder and her stroking his feathers. Give me Gavriel leaning against her legs and little head touches like he’s just a big Fleetfoot.

But I want it as more than just a little cute ‘oh, yeah, let me just luxuriously stroke this big cat’. I want details on how fae in their animal forms are treated. Is it as though they really are just animals? Do Fenrys and Connal get stroked and get attention like normal tame wolves?

Or is there a distance because, yes, that is a person inside that body? Like I’m picturing little kids making things very awkward when they want to pet the doggy and their parents have to be like ‘nope, not appropriate’. Or, say if Aelin was petting Gavriel. Would that be weird because it’s a male in that body? Would it be uncomfortable for Gavriel? Like the equivalent of her just awkwardly running her hands down his body?

Is it generally agreed among fae that you don’t touch them as if they were just an animal, or is it all just considered normal? Are the lines blurred a bit because things are so different in an animal form? Is it acceptable to pet them because, in that moment, they’re an animal? Or is it still weird?

And I really want to see someone who’s rarely encountered the fae trying to figure out the social conventions around it.

(I’m looking at you, Dorian, because you would totally try to pet Fenrys as a wolf, don’t even lie)
