Young Watercolourist in the Louvre (1891). Pascal Adolphe Jean Dagnan-Bouveret (French, 1852-1929). Oil on canvas.
Seated on her high stool at the Louvre, a young woman artist in late 19th-century costume copies details onto a fan from a large canvas at her side, L’Embarquement pour Cythère (1717) by Antoine Watteau. The distance between scenic trigger and artistic execution is large in terms of years, but the accent is no less typically Rococo, if intra-artistic.
