So lots of buzz about Young Justice Season 3 today. I saw a post about how a knew character coming in is Traci Thirteen, who at one point was Jaime Rayes boyfriend. This person was very worried that Traci was there in effect to give Jaime a case of the “Not Gays” they had a whole thing about how breaking up BluePulse by making one (or both) of them definitively straight was “queer eraser.
Now I don’t agree with that, to be eraser I do believe that something needs to be firmly and fully canon. However it does highlight a problem. Much of Young Justice’s fan base is fueled by interest in gay subtext in the show, namely the relationship between Jaime and Bart, and between Dick and Wally (in season one mainly) The actors, writers, etc clearly know this. They’re aware of fans interest in this, they’ve talked about it, referenced it, dropped heavy hints about it. I believe they said something about exploring sexuality in Season 3. Now as of right now no one has seen any of Season 3 we don’t know anything. However it would be “interesting” if a show brought back because of a strong campaign of fan demand, a fandom that is heavily invested in one relationship/subplot either ignored that subplot or worse went out of their way to make sure it couldn’t happen
I’m a big believer that shows don’t owe you your favorite ships or anything like that. On the other hand I also believe queer baiting is wrong, and there is a LONG ass list of shows, Sherlock, Supernatural, Voltron, etc that KNOW they have a large group of fans all about that gay shit. They hint, and tease those fans, stringing them along, throwing in innuendo heavy scenes. These shows stay on the air (and maybe returned to the air in YJ) on the back of people wanting gay representation, and yet NEVER deliver on it. It feels like no one ever calls them out on it and the fans keep coming back and going “OMG look they….” I feel like we’re not gonna get representation till people punish shows for trying to have the cake of gay/pro-gay fans and eat it (not offending homophobes) too.
