When someone strikes up a conversation about teaching and I slowly start to realize that they just want to talk about how terrible the Common Core is.

Talking to my class about Ferguson, MO.
  • About a month ago, I was talking to my fifth period about making text connections. On making text-to-world connections, this happened.
  • Me: Text-to-world means drawing a connection from the book you're reading to the real world surrounding you. For example, this time around reading Tears of a Tiger, I cannot get the events of Ferguson out of my mind.
  • Student 1: What's that?
  • Me: Ferguson, Missouri? The Michael Brown protests?
  • Student 2: I've heard about it, but I don't really know what's going on.
  • Student 3: Me either. Can you explain to us?
  • Me: Well, in August an unarmed eighteen year old -- his name is Michael Brown -- was shot and killed by a police officer.
  • Student 2: What?! Why would they do that if he was unarmed?
  • Me: That's the question many people are asking. But at the heart of the issue is that Michael Brown is black and the police officer is white. Many citizens of the city of Ferguson, of Missouri as a state, and the US in general are very angry at the trend of police violence against African Americans. Michael Brown was unarmed, yet the police officer justified his actions because he feared for his life. I personally feel that is extremely problematic. There have been protests going on ever since.
  • Student 1: That's so messed up.
  • Me: It is. And more concerning for me is the reaction the white community is having to it -- a child is dead and, in general, there is a complete and utter lack of empathy from white Americans. They think the African American community is playing 'the race card'.
  • Student 4: Sometimes they do.
  • Me: I disagree. Let me give you an example. You know how sometimes you get in a fight with your parents, and you're really mad and frustrated about something that you know in your heart of hearts is real? And you don't feel heard or understood, because your parents are like 'calm down you're so wrong' and basically make you feel like you're over-reacting?
  • Whole Class: OMG YES. I HATE THAT.
  • Me: Well, apply that to racism. Your parents represent the white community. The black community is you.
  • Whole Class: Oooohh...
  • Me: Exactly. Feelings are real. Your parents have no right to tell you your feelings aren't justified. End stop. Just so: the white community has no right to tell the African American community their feelings aren't justified. End stop.
  • Me: And as far as text-to-world connections go, Ferguson is a real as it gets. Remember how Andy mentioned at one point to his brother Monty the things he was scared about?
  • Student 5: Yeah, something about school assignments.
  • Me: Yes, that, and walking through rich white neighborhoods at night...
  • Whole Class: *minds blown* Oohhh.

Things with this fandom have gotten beyond ridiculous. I don’t just mean on here, but on twitter and Instagram too…so bad that Sophia’s friends feel like they have to make their accounts private. It’s really sad. When people constantly comment on their posts & reply to their tweets about things that have nothing to do with them (Bushfer mostly) it’s really not ok!! People need to find their chill & learn to respect these people and their privacy. You have gone from crazy to completely and certifiably insane. I know i’m probably gonna get hate for this, but i honestly do not care. I’m not calling anyone out & this honestly is not directed at anyone, its a general statement. I just think that when Sophia is lacking on her social media posts & her friends feel like they can’t post things freely and have to make their accounts private, there is seriously something wrong.
