I’m glad vets encourage younger people to audition for drum corps. It’s great, it really is.
But I absolutely can’t stand the “You can march no matter what obstacles you’re facing! If you want to march, you will!!” spiel.
Sometimes it is impossible for people to audition. It’s super fucking expensive and on top of that, it’s a major time commitment over the summer. Not everyone has the luxury of having free Summer’s to spend marching. It doesn’t mean they want to march any less than people out on the field. But for some people, auditioning and marching isn’t within reach.
I don’t know. I just feel like when people shout the “If you want to march, you can!!” rhetoric, it completely devalues people who absolutely can’t audition but wish more than anything that they could.
