GOT 7.06: On Jon Snow, Winterfell, & The Survival of House Stark

I know everyone’s upset about this episode. But hear me out. Because this ep actually got me really emotional about Jon Snow and Winterfell and the Starks and yes, specifically Jonsa.

This Jorah line about Longclaw going to Jon’s kids as the Winterfell score motif begins to play is hella important:

JORAH: He gave it to you.
JON: I’m not his son.
JORAH: I brought shame upon my house. I broke my father’s heart. I forfeited the right to claim this sword. It’s yours. May it serve you well. And your children after you.

Without the Winterfell theme, the moment is open to interpretation. But with it, the whole context of the scene changes. It’s an emotional moment, explicitly telling us that Jon’s future is tied to Winterfell. But the implication behind that is heavier yet: Jon’s survival as key to the legacy of House Stark. (Also, don’t discount the use of the word “serve”. Later Jon tells Beric “I serve the North”. Remember that.)

But it’s doubly important that we cut immediately to *WINTERFELL* as the score motif continues, revealing Sansa and Arya up on the battlements. What is Arya talking to Sansa about? Ned Stark.

Arya recalls a memory of Ned as the father who encouraged her to be who she wanted to be. Why was he so accepting of her wanting to fight? We as the audience know Arya reminded Ned of Lyanna. With the R+L=J reveal, we also know Ned as the man who decided to keep his promise to his sister by selling a lie, sacrificing his own honor and his duty to his family, all to SAVE JON.

This act was echoed when Ned decided to sacrifice his honor and duty, when he falsely admitted to treason and declared fealty to Joffrey, TO SAVE SANSA. That act did not save Ned as both Arya and Jon remind us this episode. But it did succeed in keeping Sansa alive. From then on, her survival has been partly her own and partly because her enemies view her by her title. Three men specifically refer to Sansa as “the key to the North”: Tywin Lannister, Petyr Baelish, and Roose Bolton. They only see her in the context of the power her title could give them. But Sansa helped only one man become King in the North: Jon Snow.

Now, let’s be clear. They could have EASILY transitioned from that Longclaw scene to that Tyrion and D@ny scene where they talk about her inability to have children and argue about her line of succession.

Another reminder: The episode that Jeor Mormont gives Longclaw to Jon? Same episode Cersei makes Sansa write that letter, Sansa pleads for Ned’s life, and Ned decides to sacrifice his honor for Sansa’s life, before losing his head. That is all from episode 1.09 “Baelor”, directed by Alan Taylor. Yes, that’s the same director of this episode, so it’s no accident these echoes all come together here.

Additionally, the first 20 minutes of 7.06 include two conversations that remind us of the time Jon was a prisoner of the wildlings (Undercover!Jon 1.0). Jon calls Ned “the most honorable man I ever met”. Him and Jorah talk about how their honorable fathers died horribly. And a not so subtle nudge about R+L=J when Beric mentions that Jon does not look like Ned and must take after his mother (unbeknownst to them, Lyanna).

Furthermore, we have Beric advising Jon about knowing what you’re fighting for. Beric says he’s “not fighting so some man or woman [he] hardly knows can sit on a throne of swords.” He fights for life. Against the enemy that is death. Jon seems to connect with that, restating the Night’s Watch mantra of duty and sacrifice for the good of the realm. Hell, you even have Tormund joking (or not?) about the babies he’s gonna have with Brienne. This sudden talk of fighting for life and children and legacy all sound a lot like the infamous ~Dreams of Spring.

All these sequences happen in the first 20 minutes of the ep, before D@ny even appears on screen.

Are you doubting that Jorah’s words about Longclaw were meant specifically to connect Jon’s future with Sansa? Then I give you the Winterfell score motif playing over Sansa’s scene acting as regent in Jon’s absence, as she pushes Brienne to leave for King’s Landing, seemingly to protect her from LF’s plans. Reminder that LF is the last of the three men above that wanted Sansa for her title and the power she could give them. Again and again, Sansa chooses Jon.

The use of the Winterfell score motif twice connects Jon and Sansa and their shared mission: To protect the North. Sansa rules the North faithfully in Jon’s absence and prepares for the Long Night and worries about the consequences of a letter on the size of Jon’s armies (which seem to have grown from 10k to 20k in Jon’s absence?). Meanwhile, Jon’s singular focus is on defeating the Night King. With every scene, that comes to mean by whatever means necessary. Securing dragonfire no matter how, getting evidence for an armistice no matter how. It’s all looking pretty suicidal, tbh. But it’s exactly the opposite. Beric’s words about fighting for life and Jorah’s words about Longclaw remind us: Jon’s survival, like Sansa’s, is key to the survival of House Stark. They alone hold the legacy of Ned Stark in their hands.

Fast forward to D@ny swooping in on her dragons to save another Jon Snow plan gone horribly wrong:

They are surrounded on all sides by wights and generally just fuckin doomed. Dany’s arrival is all eerily reminiscent of when Sansa arrived with the Vale armies in the Battle of the Bastards (which Sansa had conveniently reminded us about earlier).

Jon watches the dragonfire incinerate hundreds of wights in two seconds flat. D@ny gets all the other men up on Drogon, including the wight, so she saves his men and the mission.

But not Jon Snow.

Jon gets cut off. Jon gets tackled by wights and falls to icy depths. D@ny, admittedly pained, leaves Jon Snow to die.

Jon, again eerily reminiscent of BotB, claws his way out of that icy water himself. This time, he uses a tool, Longclaw, now established as a symbol of survival of House Stark, to pull himself out. And then shares a sardonic laugh with the icy ground before picking himself up again.

He’s still fuckin surrounded by walkers and most likely dying tonight, but frozen stiff he still raises Longclaw like the soldier that he is. Fighting for life even to the last frost bite swing.

And Benjen Stark saves him. Benjen, the living reason Jon joined the Night’s Watch, and a potent reminder of his first vows of duty and personal sacrifice. Consider that for a second and feel the weight of it for Jon’s character.

Let’s repeat that for the folks in the back:

Don’t discount this. Or let people errorenously state that D@ny saved Jon. Nope. Literally not what happened. Ship what you want to ship. But the show could have had her save Jon too, like Sansa did. They didn’t.

Say it with me now:

In conclusion: Have faith in Jon Snow.

...I feel like a bad person sometimes for liking Wayhaught and Wynonna Earp because I'm seeing more comments like "it's not rep. Any queer woc , it's just more white people" and idk it's so confusing . I love the show cause it's the very thing I wish I saw growing up, making your own family that isn't blood related, seeing a woman find out she's gay and navigating her feelings etc etc

Don’t feel like a bad person! This show has more diversity than most. People are never satisfied. Look, obviously the media has a problem with representation, but this show is the last one people should be harping on for that. Wynonna Earp has 2 well rounded lesbian characters, a gay indian character, a hispanic woman who is also a literal genius, a black male lead with the kindest heart in the world despite his past sufferings, and a female lead with psychological issues who smashes the patriarchy and is never scared to speak her mind. As far as diversity goes, it’s kicking serious ass. Not every show can represent every minority, but this show does a damn good job trying.

And I agree, I would’ve loved to have a show to watch like this when I was growing up. It’s amazing to see a show in which people get to be so genuine and raw in their shortcomings, get to form such strong and meaningful bonds, and get to be entirely open and ok with themselves without fear of judgement from their peers. I have literally cried over this show because I watch it and it makes me feel like I’m fine, ya know? Like I’m ok with just being myself. The show normalizes so many things that we have been/still are told are wrong or weird or socially unacceptable and that’s one of the best things about it. Seeing so many characters who are so unapologetically themselves is amazing. Seeing Wynonna be unapologetically fractured, Jeremy be unapologetically scared, Nicole be unapologetically gay, Waverly be unapologetically soft, Dolls be unapologetically kind, Rosita be unapologetically brilliant, Doc be unapologetically emotional….it’s really beautiful. It makes you feel like it’s ok for you to just be you. So love this show. Love the shit out of it. Because it’s a show about how the best thing you can be is yourself, and how, no matter how broken and fucked up you think you are, you are still something amazing.

In the beautiful, wonderful words of Jeremy Chetri:

“We’re both fools,” he said in a hushed voice. “So it’s okay, right?”

You choose to be insecure, how you say? Well you’re the one who believes the words people say. You’re the one who tells yourself negative things. Really start loving yourself tell yourself you’re beautiful. Give yourself compliments even if you don’t believe them. Look in the mirror every morning and say “you’re beautiful”, point out the things that you like about yourself. Instead of pointing out the flaws you have. Look at your perfections even if its just something little. Love yourself! It Boosts your confidence. Love yourself or else who will? No one else’s opinion should matter but your own. Who cares what they say be yourself and love yourself
