you're all awesome people and i hope you have a good one

rachelhanke  asked:

Hey Charlie! First off, I adore your art. It gives me all the feels. Secondly, since you're primarily a self taught artist I'm wondering if you have any resources you strongly recommend for someone hoping to someday have a similar job to yours in concept art? If you've already answered this question just let me know and I'll comb through your blog to find it!

ESSAY IMPENDING.

I think, along with resources, I’d always recommend having a good idea of what ‘area’ you want to work in too. My job is kind of a strange one (in that it’s an house job but we’re not producing the games or films or actual products.) We are a step in the production line. I get to be part of sweet projects, but also I get to be part of many… I’m not locked into whatever a studio might be making for 2 or 3 years etc. My fingers are in a lotta pies.

The reason I say that is because a lot of people coming into concept will likely need more skills than I have. I am 95% a 2D artist. I work with 3D but very rarely, and not enough to know the inns and outs. I like 2D… and I consider illustration to be the sweetest spot of all the work I do, so I’m quite happy with that balance (and I’m an old fucking curmudgeon and I don’t wanna learn no 3D.)

If you went for a traditional role in a games studio, it will probably be more expected for you to be fluent in 3D. Not always of course! But it’s likely another good skillset to have. Purely 2D (just art focused) roles are not something that I see as often as mutiltasking roles. Which makes a lot of sense. 2D art is often mostly needed at the beginning of a project, and briefly at the end. In my seven years at Atomhawk I’ve seen a lot of people in other studios laid off, and a lot of studios go under. So, multitasking roles mean people will always have something to do.

APOLOGIES. I’M SOUNDING A LITTLE DOOM AND GLOOM. Great jobs exists! People will always make cool stuff!

I’m very much a jack of all trades and my job demands a lot of different things: characters / turn arounds / outfit designs / expression sheets / illustration / marketing art / pitch art / but it’s all primarly focused around characters. So. If characters are what you want - look into that! I would say that when it comes to apply for / getting work etc, we always love to see range. If someone isn’t showing me all the process behind their work it’s likely the first thing I’m going to ask for when it comes to an interview. I think if you have shiny work (on a freelance basis) a client would have enough confidence in the end result. But for a production role like mine, I wanna see that stuff.

Rough sketches through to shiny polished work. The whole lot. I want it all. I want to see people’s thinking! I’m rambling.

First of all: be able to draw well. Know your characters. Know your figures. Know your anatomy enough to make it convincing and be able to twist it when you need to. We get a lot of people who apply, who, quite simply (don’t hate me) are not good enough yet. We have people who work in tons of different styles and methods but at the heart of it, they can draw well.

DESIGN. Mother of god. Design. Drawing well is the first step, but you also have to have that creative flair to be able to come up with ideas and be able to sell them convincingly. Drawing the thing is only half the battle. No one wants a beautifully rendered character wearing the most impractical / boring outfit you’ve ever seen (just an example). Thinking logically about design is something I’ve seen underestimated many times over the years. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s more important than someones drawing abilities. When it comes down to it, drawing is just the tool to represent the design.

Resources wise: the internet is your oyster! Cast a wide net. Create the kind of work you want to do but also push yourself. I think the results are usually better when artists find an area they’re good in and the push the boundaries of that. Better than trying to be a jack of every single trade possible. Don’t have an awesome portfolio full of character work and then think ‘oh, wait, this is just characters, maybe I should stick a fucking car in there too?’ YOU KNOW? Do what you do - and do it well.

Briefly just a few of the things that helped me most: any massive black videos you can find. Mostly for process. Jason Chan’s videos easily had the most impact for me, both in learning how to improve my process and painting the kind of characters I wanted to. Micheal Hampton and Mike Mattesi (force) for anatomy and energy in poses. Your peers! Your favourite artists in the industry at the moment! The places and people you will learn the most from are always so very individual.

Shit that was long. Good luck!

PS. It’s also my humble opinion that you should never take all of your advice from just one person - just take the pieces that click for you :)

@lumenlight prompted me, “Sterek AU where Stiles tries to seduce Derek but Derek has the habit of only dating older people (Jennifer, Kate …). So he says no to Stiles and Stiles is really disappointed but by chance he keeps seeing Derek and with time Derek realizes that he may have made a mistake?”

Hope you like it!!

~4000 words, rated M. (I don’t usually write smut, but I felt like this was that kind of prompt.)

on ao3

Stiles usually doesn’t venture as far out of town as the Preserve—there’s not much out here but trees—but today that’s kind of the point. If he’s going to start up a jogging regimen to prep for lacrosse in the fall, he’s sure as hell not going to do it in his own neighborhood, where all his neighbors can (and will) watch him flailing around looking stupid.

He doesn’t actually end up jogging at all, though, because before he finds the trail he’d marked on his map, his Jeep abruptly sputters and dies on him right in the middle of the road. That’s also about when it starts raining.

“Oh, come on,” Stiles groans, hitting his head on the steering wheel a few times.

He pulls out his phone to call someone—his dad, a tow truck, Scott—and there’s no signal. Right. Because he wanted isolated, and he got it.

There’s no sound at all except the drumming of the rain on the roof of the Jeep, coming down harder and harder, taunting him for being such a fucking idiot.

He thinks about waiting it out, but who knows how long that could take, and if he doesn’t make it back home in time for dinner or at least get somewhere where he can make a phone call, then his dad is probably going to think he got eaten by a mountain lion or something.

“Fuck it,” he mutters. He pockets his phone and keys, grits his teeth, and jumps out into the downpour.

*

He has to walk for about twenty minutes before he finds any sign of civilization. It’s a house, or at least part of one. It’s tucked away down a long dirt driveway on the edge of the Preserve and looks sketchy as hell. It’s been burned, badly, and even though it looks like maybe someone’s been fixing it up, it’s still not exactly what Stiles would call habitable. Part of the charred roof is caved in, and most of the windows on the second floor are shattered, their jagged glass gleaming ominously in the dim light and the rain.

Stiles would assume it’s abandoned, except that there’s a shiny black Camaro parked out front. That at least looks well cared for.

It’s that detail, plus the rather compelling fact that this is probably the only house for at least a mile and Stiles can feel his feet starting to rub raw in his wet tennis shoes, that finally gives him the courage he needs to squelch his way through the mud and onto the porch to knock on the door.

anonymous asked:

Since you're offering advice: What do you suggest to those of us for whom it is natural and automatic to leave "evaluating" comments? Lately I have erred on the side of simply saying nothing at all, though I feel there must be a happy medium. We are trained all through school to evaluate writing. The first fic site I was ever part of welcomed concrit. I love receiving concrit. I don't agree that it's universal bad etiquette to leave critique. Of course rude and entitled comments are bad. ???

I think it’s just a matter of changing your mindset to accommodate for the situation. You mentioned that in school, you were trained to evaluate writing– was this a writing school where both parties were offering up something to be critiqued and improved? That’s the first difference with fanfic– obviously there are a lot of writers that communicate with one another, but overall there are much more readers than there are writers. Therefore, it’s not equal to offer critique because you are not putting yourself in an equally vulnerable position with that other person. Yes, you love concrit but there’s no like… partnership. Is this making sense? Like I’ve been in writing classes before and in those, you do get to know and trust the people who are giving you concrit. And, you knew that one week they would be critiquing you, and the next you would be offering them suggestions. There was an equal vulnerability and an shared interest in improving.

This isn’t the experience of fandom. You don’t have that trust and partnership that is created in a writing club or school or smaller FF community. And, most importantly, some people honest-to-god aren’t looking to improve their writing. They’re just here to have a good time. Obviously, everyone improves naturally over time, but they aren’t looking for suggestions. They’re just sharing.

I always like to think of fanfic in terms of cooking for people (i’ve made this analogy before but it works here too). If you were eating at a friend’s house and they asked, “Did you think there was enough salt in the sauce”, then by all means you would feel comfortable answering. Or if it was a good friend, you might even be comfortable saying “This is lovely– I think it would be even better with more mushrooms!” However, you would not go to a relative strangers house, eat their food, and then offer advice. Especially if you knew you would never see this person and they didn’t ask for it. It’s more polite to just keep it at “This is delicious, thank you so much for cooking!” (The best food is free food. Never complain about free food.)

In terms of curbing your natural response to leave concrit rather than just nice comments: In my writing class, I always learned to start with a few positive things before moving on to improvements they can make. So, leaving a positive comment means just cutting out that second half. Leave all those specific, positive good parts. There is nothing better than comments like “I loved your characterization of XX, It was lovely to see the depth in that character” or “Your writing was lyrical and detailed- I felt I could really see the scene unfold!” or “Omgg the line “INSERT LINE HERE” made me smile!” – All the skills of concrit are awesome when applied to positive comments. Just leave out the second half!

You’re right: It’s not universal bad etiquette to leave constructive criticism on a piece of writing. However, it is fandom bad etiquette to leave it on a fic where the author has not asked for it.

If you do love giving and recieving concrit, there are options! First and foremost, say that you welcome concrit in the notes of your fic so you can continue to receive it. In terms of giving it, offer to beta for people! This is the stage of writing when people want and need all the editing skills you have gained in school or elsewhere!

Thanks for the question– I hope this helped you understand where fic authors are coming from and some alternative ways for you to enjoy your fandom experience!

So since you're raising chicks right now I have some questions for you. My aunt is moving of our property and taking her chickens with her. This means we're gonna get some new ones and start from scratch. I want to properly socialize these ones so they're easier to work with. How are you doing it?

Set up their container in the family room so they can see people all the time. If they’re stinky you’re going to need to switch to a higher quality feed (not Dumor or Purina which are the popular ones in America, you can google some online) and switch to equine stable pellets as bedding. Spray them with water so they fluff up and wait for them to dry. This will absorb any smell and is a lot healthier for chickens to be on.

Don’t pick them up when you first get them unless you need to. Just hold your hand in their container with treats for however long it takes them to be comfortable. A few minutes multiple times a day for the first two days should be enough depending on your chicks. Then take them out to a safe area and sit with them on the floor, just letting them hop on you or crawl under. After a day or two of this they should be begging to be held at which point you can start holding them. Feed them treats like scrambled or hard boiled egg, chopped greens, worms, and maybe some little wild bird food (make sure they have access to grit). It can take a bit for them to try new things so just leave a dish with the treats in there, they’ll try it eventually and learn they like it.

Soon they’ll think you’re their parent and want to follow you everywhere. This is an awesome time to take them outside for supervised play on warm, sunny days, and take them with you around the house. This will get them better about being picked up and following you when they’re adults :) it’s pretty easy to socialize baby chickens, being both birds that imprint on whatever takes care of them and domesticated they quickly learn to like people. At around 2-3 weeks if they’re well feathered you can take them with in a box in your car and feed them tiny fast food tidbits (not too much because it’s bad for them). That way they’ll associate the car with good things too, which is helpful for taking sick birds to the vet, or if you like having a little adventure buddy.

By the time they’re ready to go outside the chickens will be feathered puppies that follow you everywhere and want to sit on your shoulders or lap.

Hope that helps :)

So for the 1k follower micro fics (Congrats!! I've been around since 100 I think lmao) I was thinking shance model AU? Like Shiro is a photographer, and Lance looses his first photographer for being too reckless in his shoots or having too outlandish ideas or smth. Shiro finds him and recognizes him and they work together? Romantic obviously, shance is beautiful. Thank you if you decide to do it! 😉 Hmu sometime you're awesome?? Ily?

Wild.

Unruly.

An annoying brat.

Won’t listen to his betters.

A waste of a nice body and face.

I heard he’s still here just because he knows the CEO.

You really don’t want to work with him. He’ll just drag you down.

All of these warnings floated through his head, but he pushed them away. Shiro had a very strict rule of judging people for himself, and Lance wasn’t going to be an exception. Allura asked him specifically, calling him after months of silence, so the least he could do was genuinely try.

“Listen, Shiro… I know you work in Japan now, but just this once, won’t you come back?” she begged. “I have this male model, and he’s everything you ever dreamed of. Slightly androgynous, especially when he puts on makeup. He’s tall, naturally skinny, has so much natural talent…”

“What’s the problem, then? What do you need me for?”

“No one would work with him.“

Shiro was quiet for a moment. “Why?”

“He’s… Cocky. He knows what he can be, but he’s not there just yet, and it pisses people off, and depresses him too when the photos don’t come out as well as they could.”

Shiro hesitated. Said he needs some time to think about it. In response, Allura sent him the guy’s portfolio. He didn’t hesitate in the least when he booked the nearest flight out to New York.

Lance was so much more than his photos.

His skin, the most amazing shade of caramel Shiro has ever seen, practically glowed. It was clearly well taken care of. His hair was soft and shiny, even if a bit short to really play around with. Legs that went on forever, a smooth, taut stomach, slim waist and a gorgeous face.

Shiro’s stomach flipped and tightened as he crossed the room to officially meet him.

Lance noticed him approaching and broke into a wide, slightly goofy grin. “Well, hello there, handsome. Is that a camera in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”

Shiro was a goner.

They worked well together. Lance had a lot of great suggestions, but he was very pushy about them. Shiro could see how it might irk other photographers, but smitten as he was, he didn’t mind at all. And once he gained Lance’s trust, the young model became much more obedient and willing to listen to him.

They clicked outside work, too. Soon, dinner together became a habit. Either they ate out at restraunts, not exactly dates, but a bit too flirty to be friendly, or they cooked together in Lance’s tiny kitchen. Eating out was nice, but to Shiro, no gourmet meal could ever be as good as eating Mac&Cheese from a slightly chipped bowl in that kitchen.

It was in Lance’s kitchen that he first heard him laugh so hard he snorted.

It was in Lance’s kitchen that he saw Lance cry for the first time, plagued by insecurities about an upcoming shoot.

It was in Lance’s kitchen that he fell in love with his cooking.

It was in Lance’s kitchen that he fell in love with the charming, cocky yet insecure, incredibly adorable, irresistibly sexy man.

It was in Lance’s kitchen they had their first kiss. It was against the counter they fucked for the first time. It was in Lance’s kitchen that Shiro kneeled one day, holding a small box, diamond ring resting on velvet for the love of his life to accept.

I HAVE to add on to the submission about ceramics- it’s such an amazing discipline, with such a LONG history. Ceramics has been around for literally thousands of years. And people still have the same traditions, use -if not the same- nearly the same glazes, the same clay bodies.

We talk about clay bodies as if they have their own personalities: porcelain is vain and finicky, high maintenance, but god when you’re good enough to really work with porcelain in can come out amazing.

And like. Yes, ceramics is a science: it’s chemistry and thermodynamics and geology and architecture and anatomy and a study in structural integrity all in one, but it is an art more than that. You can do every single step perfectly and you still don’t know what you’ll be looking at come time to crack open the kiln.

My first ceramics class, I was so frustrated because no one could tell me exactly what color any of the glazes would come out. Even the people who had been there for years would respond to my questions with a cheerful and cavalier ‘I don’t know! Try it and see what happens!’ Now that I’m on the other side of that conversation, I know that the uncertainty is part of the joy- you have to allow for change, allow for the unknown to creep in and collaborate with you, and keep meticulous notes so you can recreate it when awesome things happen.

Our recipes- which we guard jealously and give out only to close friends or for fair trade- are strange and illegible to the untrained eye, full of nothing but numbers and symbols for elements, and on the whole useless without the associated temperature charts.

And yet, the trained eye can look at a piece, and say: oh, there’s cobalt in this. Oh, this is a red clay- lots of iron. Oh, look at the colors- this is a celadon, a temmoku, a rutile, a shino. That’s a cone 6, 4, 10.

One night, two friends and I had a crystalline firing (different than a normal firing: you get the kiln up to temperature and then ‘bounce’ it: lower the temp, then spike it, 4 or 5 times, then let it hold for a while. Takes like 12 hours.)

We stayed in the studio overnight, and were up all night watching the kiln; talking and drinking and singing dirty songs, toasting 'Bacchus’ because we were all friends, drinking wine straight from the bottle, passed from hand to hand. Off and on, that whole night, we had clay in our hands, making news things even as we finished others, hoping against hope the colors, the crystals would come out.

For the last three hours, we were outside, right up next to the kiln-half our bodies freezing in the cold night, the other half sweating from the blaze of the kiln-watching the temperature rise and fall as we tapped on the gas gauge. We went to sleep as the sun rose.

That firing was the only one we stayed overnight for, and though we’ve had two more firings since, that was the only one that turned out.

Hey! Anon who had sent the snowbaz prompt about the color yellow, etc. that was really really awesome! You're writing style is fantastic, and the quality is amazing!! Wow! Are you still excepting prompts? Because if so I'd love to see perhaps an insecure Baz and snow being kind? I really loved how you handled snow being self deprecating in your fic and how Baz handled it and I'd love to see something the other way around? Also, park, cold, blanket, eyes, bird, and leafs? That'd be so awesome, omg

AWWWWW OMGS TY ANON!!!!! OKAY SO the sad thing is I kinda got carried away and didn’t include EVERYTHING that you asked for, but I tried to get as much as I could. SECOND OF ALL I hope it’s okay, but I decided to try and use this for the @snowbaz-feda thingy (that I have been wanting to participate in and have only now been able to get something done) so um…. yeah here we go!!

It was a beautiful spring morning with birds singing their cheerful tunes as they hid among the swaying leaves of trees with twisting branches and big, bright blossoms. There were cheerful shrieks of children running through the open fields playing games of tag and such. Toddlers giggled as they attempted to chase after fluttering butterflies, almost tumbling to the ground before they pulled themselves up again, playing the game until the butterfly flew too far.

And amongst the hoards and hoards of people, where three people in their early twenties, taking advantage of their spring break and strolling through the lush gardens. The tallest of the three held hands loosely with the boy beside him, who was easily recognizable by his bronze hair and blue eyes. And next to him a short girl had her arm linked through his, rolling her eyes at every remark the two made. Honestly, Penny had no idea why she even tried to spend time with the two dorks that were Simon Snow and Baz Pitch. They were so in love it was sickening.

“I could totally fly up to the top of that tree,” Simon argues, looking at the rather gigantic tree in front of them. Baz snorts.

“Please Snow. You can barely fly a foot off the ground.”

“That’s because I didn’t really try.”

“You’re both idiots.”

“Nobody told you to come, Bunce,” Baz says, but there’s a small smile on his lips.

“I had to come or else you both would’ve gotten yourselves killed. Need I remind you of that time at the zoo?”

“BUT THEY WERE SO SAD PENNY–”

“Nope. I’m not having this conversation again, Simon. Honestly both of you act like children.”

“Do not,” Baz scoffs. Penny raises an eyebrow.

“Okay fine maybe a little bit.”

“Case and point.”

“Whatever.” They walk a little while longer, enjoying the many sounds of the park and the smell of spring air. And as they did, Simon tried to douse the crippling anxiety that was forming within him. Today was the day, and he was worried how Baz would react.

Baz wasn’t exactly the easy-to-read type. If he was being honest with himself, he could barely figure out that his “plotting” face was actually his “madly-in-love” face when they were still at Watford, which means that he was either incredibly stupid, or Baz hid his emotions well. Sure, as they started to get used to each other Simon got better and better at reading Baz, but it wasn’t exactly like he was an open book. He didn’t know how much Baz loved him. He could just be going through the motions, or he could love him so much that it felt like a weight was crushing on his chest.

But, as Penny caught his gaze, he knew he had to do this. It was now or never.

Baz was worried. More worried than he’s ever been in his entire life, and that was a lot of worrying. He saw the signs before Simon himself seemed to realize them. The way he was wringing his hands nervously whenever he spoke to Baz, the way he didn’t really quite meet Baz’s eyes. He also seemed to be, in a way, distancing himself a little, as if he found Baz…. repulsive.

Sure he shouldn’t think about these things too much but….

Simon Snow hated Baz for a total of seven years with every inch of his being. They were constantly growling at each other, seeing who could pack the hardest punch. They were constantly picking at each other, which made it seem almost impossible for Baz to have a shot with him. Let’s be honest here, when a guy calls you a “bastard” twenty-four seven and considers you as his “enemy,” there’s a good chance he hates you more than you can possibly know.

But… somehow, in the middle of a flaming forest with years of self-hatred pouring off of him in waves, Simon Snow kissed him, sparking a new fire in his heart. None of it made sense. Nothing added up… which sometimes made Baz wonder if this was all part of some plan that Simon had. Sure, it was a cruelness that he never thought Simon would sink to, but maybe he finally figured out how much he hated Baz.

And when Simon stopped him in the middle of the park, Baz could practically hear the words echoing in his ears. I’m sorry Baz it’s just…. Not working for me.

Simon nodded at Penny, who took a step back, wandering off to a nearby bench where she sat down, watching not-so-subtly. The fidgeting increased outrageously as Simon stepped in front of Baz, the sound of his tail swishing and his wings flapping audible. His cheeks dotted with constellations of moles coloured a bright pink that spread down his neck and up to his ears. Shakily, he grabbed one of Baz’s hands, looking up into his eyes for the first time all day, his blue eyes clouded with fear.

“B-baz I–um….” He turned back to Penny, who gave him an overly enthusiastic thumbs up.

“T-these last couple years with you have been, well amazing and I–” he squeezes his eyes tight, looking so embarrassed that it made Baz’s heart lurch. He couldn’t watch him sit through that.

“It’s okay Simon. I know.”

“Y-you do?”

“I mean, it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?”

“I-it is?” Simon says, as pale as a ghost.

“I mean–” Baz takes a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “–I’ve always kind of known that the day would arrive because, well, you’re you and I’m….. me and I totally understand it’s just–” Baz stops himself, trying to keep his breathing under control. Simon looks more confused than usual.

“Look…. It’s fine, Simon. I get that sometimes these things…. Don’t really work out as they should so–”

“Wait… what?” Simon says, still looking confused but a little less agitated.

“You’re breaking up with me, aren’t you?” And then…. Simon laughs. A snorty kind of laugh that makes tears stream from his face.

“Aleister Crowley, Baz. No, I am not breaking up with you.”

“Then what–” Simon casts one last glance over his shoulder at Penny, then looks back at Baz. He clutches his hands tightly and bends down onto one knee.

“Baz I–I just love you so much, okay? Aleister Crowley I love you so much and I…. I want to know if–” he reaches into his pocket, almost dropping the small black box inside of it. Blushing fiercely, he opens it up, revealing to a startled Baz a small golden band, marked with a pattern that almost seemed to resemble flames.

“Baz…. W-will you marry me?”

Hey, you're German, right? I've got a huge favour to ask of you. I've been studying German for a few years, and I plan on studying there for a year. Before that, I wanna improve my language skills, so I've been wondering if you could tell me about some good original German movies? I don't want to watch dubbed ones, I've heard they're horrible. Thank you so much! Love your blog, by the way.

Dubbed movies aren’t actually half bad - at least to movies dubbed in other languages. Trust me, I’ve watched both Spanish and French dubbed movies, they were way worse. This is what we like to call “Jammern auf hohem Niveau” - complaining even though everything is pretty good. You’ll find that Germans are a people of complainers; we like to complain about everything. We are never content :)

Still, I’m really really excited that you’re interested in my culture and HELL YES THERE ARE A BUNCH OF AWESOME GERMAN MOVIES. Here are some highly acclaimed ones and some of my favourites, I hope all links work.

  • 12 Meter ohne Kopf (a movie about a German pirate, who allegedly walked 12 meters after being beheaded in order to save his crew)
  • Auf der anderen Seite (a really bautiful sort of episodic movie connecting the lives of three families, both German and Turkish)
  • Barfuss (a movie about a girl suffering from PTSD, who is saved mostly accidentally from committing suicide by a dude cleaning the clinic she is in, and then follows him around everywhere, and they fall in love. Seriously, onely one of two movies by Til Schweiger worth watching)
  • Buddenbrooks (the story of a very rich merchant family and their downfall…a really famour book adaptation)
  • Das Boot (a movie about a German submarine and its crew during World War II. 100& must-see)
  • Das Experiment (A movie about a psychology experiment in prison, and how people react when given free reign over others. This should come with a huge trigger warning. It’s awesome, but also really super disturbing)
  • Das Leben der Anderen (You might’ve heard of that one, since it received an Oscar. It deals with surveillance in East Germany, and is, also, a must-see).
  • Das weiße Band (A movie about the oppressive and rigid society pre-World War I children grew up in.)
  • Das Wunder von Bern (This movie mixes the football world championships of 1954 (soccer for heathens who call other stuff football) and the story of a family that has to re-learn to live with each other when the father comes home after being a war captive for like…12 years MUST SEE)
  • Der Baader Meinhof Komplex (movie about famous German left extremists, the RAF and their terrorist attacks)
  • Der Schuh des Manitu (THE single best German comedy to ever exist. It makes fun of Cowboy movies/books that are super popular in Germany. You’ll cry of laughter seeing Native Americans with a Bavarian accent - which also means your language level should be really high, or you won’t understand a thing. Uh, obviously don’t watch if you think white comedians playing Native Americans is racist even when it’s satire)
  • Der Untergang (the last days in thr life of Adolf Hitler. You’ll probably have heard of that one, too. MUST SEE)
  • Die Blechtrommel (God, I don’t know how to describe this one. Basically, a movie about a child who decides he doesn’t want to grow anymore and observes the world of the adults around him?)
  • Die Fälscher (again, dealing with World War II, and people in concentration camps who were tasked with copying money of other countries)
  • Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (a movie about three rebels who break into rich people’s houses only to rearrange their furniture and tell them to revise their morals - until one of them catches them in the act and they abduct him for a weekend. MUST SEE)
  • Die Feuerzangenbowle (THE classic movie. about the German school system. An older guy pretending to be a student at an elite high school. Also gave the name to a drink you will find a lot on Christmas markets)
  • Effie Briest (another novel adaptation about a young woman whose marriage is arranged and who loses everything when she cheats on her husband)
  • Ein Freund von mir (two guys who are completely different building a very strange friendship)
  • Elementarteilchen (about the lives of two brothers who were separated after birth, and the completely different lives they lead)
  • Fack Ju Göhte (no links yet, it only came out last year, a new comedy about the German school system, and absolute must-see, if you happen to find a link one day)
  • Gegen die Wand (a Turkish girl fake-marrying a German addict in an attempt to escae her family. MUST SEE)
  • Goodbye Lenin (a beautiful movie/comedy about a family and the German reunification. MUST SEE)
  • Im Winter ein Jahr (a family dealing with the loss of their son/brother)
  • Kabale und Liebe (a superb adaptation of Schiller’s play. bsjdhkdjk)
  • Kebab Connection (…I don’t even know how to describe this movie. Just watch it. Very multi/transcultural and hilarious)
  • Keinohrhasen (a douche has to do community service at a kindergarten - and finds that the girl he used to bully as a kid is now his superior. uh-oh. It’s super funny)
  • Kirschblüten - Hanami  (a dude travelling to Japan to understand and be close to his late wife)
  • Lola rennt ( a movie about a couple in a dangerous situation - and three possible outcomes)
  • Schiller (ah boy, this was a TV production, so I couldn’t find a link. A brilliant movie about the life of Germany’s best playwright, if you ask me)
  • Soul Kitchen (a comedy about a guy trying to keep his restaurant afloat and keeping his brother out of a life of petty crime)
  • Sophie Scholl - die letzten Tage (a movie about the last days in the life of Sophie Scholl and her brother, who were part of the resistance against the Nazis)
  • Vincent will Meer (a guy with tourette syndrom, a girl with an eating disorder and a guy with OCD break out of their psychiatric clinic to go to the sea. MUST SEE)
  • Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken? ( a movie based on a real story, about a group of teenagers vowing to commit suicide once they do not feel any love anymore)
  • Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot (a comedy about a kid who does a lot of nonsense and when told that he is the reason his mother dies, blames himself, feares that he has to go to hell, and tries to make up for his sins by finding his dad a new wife. Hilarious. Again, tho, super strong Bavarian accent, beware!)

And if you want to watch a few good German TV-shows:

  • Türkisch für Anfänger (ABSOLUTE MUST SEE TV SERIES OMG WATCH IT!!! It deals with a German-Turkish patchwork family and it is hilarious)
  • Tatort Münster (basically a procedural crime show. There are a lot of Tatorts, but this is the only one that is always good. you’ll find a lot of the episodes on youtube)
  • Der letzte Zeuge (a show about a coroner solving crimes)

I hope it's not too late to ask this but could you possibly write something for TsukkiYama using 15 (Is that - blood?) or 21 (Jealousy isn’t cute on you) from the angsty/suggestive sentence starters?? I couldn't choose between the two so writers choice!! (: Also, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of these prompts for your followers; you're awesome and a great writer <3

Ah, no, no, thank you! You’re so sweet! I chose to use 15 for this, hope you like this little pre-relationship first year babies angst.

Tsukkiyama - “Is that - blood?” (based off this prompt list)

Yamaguchi was late for their usual Friday night movie. Tsukishima texted once to remind him after he disappeared after practice, then again when he was five minutes late. Two hours later Yamaguchi had a slew of messages from him ranging from annoyance to resignation to worry.

When it started to get dark, Tsukishima gave up on the plan of watching the movie they had picked out together, and set out to find Yamaguchi. He had a lecture already planned about answering text messages back in a timely fashion, and that if Yamaguchi was going to have a cell phone he might as well use it. Tsukishima was fairly certain he knew where Yamaguchi was, too. And what he was doing. Both of which were no excuse to leave Tsukishima waiting at home, wondering when he was going to show up.

He found Yamaguchi right where he thought he would: behind the Shimada Mart, a pool of light from the parking lot lamps betraying his location. Tsukishima rolled his eyes and walked across the asphalt, already rehearsing his spiel about common courtesy and the importance of letting people know when plans were changed.

The words died on his lips when he reached Yamaguchi. He held a volleyball in one hand, the other hovering below it as he breathed deeply through his nose. A portion of the ball was smeared with red, and his empty hand  matched the color perfectly.

“Is that - blood?” Tsukishima asked, forgoing a greeting in concern.

Yamaguchi jumped and turned around, finally noticing that he was not alone in the parking lot. His eyes widened in surprise, and the ball dropped from his hand to bounce once on the ground and roll away.

“What?” he said first, then quickly moved both hands behind his back, away from Tsukishima’s view. “No.”

Hello, hope you're ok. So I've working a lot with the elements, and I wanted to know how can we know which element we belong to the most? Plus, I need energy and motivation. I am manico-depressive. And during my downs moment, I just need some strength and bravery to stay out of my bed until it's bed time. Will you help me please? Thanks. 🕊

Hello. Thanks for writing to me! I myself have struggled with mental illness, so I might have an idea of difficult it can be, particularly the downswings! I’m not in your head, though, and I do realize that it’s a very individual thing, and your experience may be different than mine. In any case, I hope you’ve found people, including professionals, willing to help you through this. It can be extraordinarily difficult to get actual treatment for these things sometimes, because there’s so much stigma and also just a lack of people who understand.

I’m not a doctor, so I can’t give medical advice. As someone who is both a witch and a survivor of mental illness, though, I will say that magic can be a helpful coping mechanism when combined with normal treatment, and the elements are great topic to focus on in magical practice. I’ve come to find that magick gives my life an extra layer of structure and stability and a sense of connection, which is helpful for some people.

You mention a desire for strength and bravery. I’d wager you’re pretty brave already to be studying magick to begin with, but I realize it’s difficult to feel your own bravery sometimes. Now, many magicians and witches would probably tell you that if you’re interested in bravery and strength, you should work with fire exclusively, but I disagree. In my view, all the elements have qualities of strength and bravery. It’s a different kind of bravery with each, though, and a different kind of strength.

Anyways, in my view, nobody is going to be entirely governed by one element or belong to just one. Nevertheless, concepts like personal elements exist for a reason, and at any given time, you can probably feel the forces of the all the elements at work within you. Yes, it is quite common for a person to have an elemental type (though it may change at various points in their life).  I would argue that there’s probably two elemental characteristics a person might try to discover about themselves at certain times - the element they currently inhabit, and the one they wish to move into or bring into their life more often.

Some believe a person’s astrological sun sign is a clue to their dominant element - for example, they might see someone born a Virgo as predisposed to Earth traits because Virgo is an Earth sign. Others take it further and will examine a person’s entire natal chart and the way the planets, etc. interact within it for signs of an element dominating. This approach has never really resonated with me, personally but it can be a good starting point for some folks.

The best method for determining your own elemental affinity is, in my opinion, simple self-examination and introspection. This can take many forms, but should probably begin just by studying all the elements and their relationship to the structure of the universe. I don’t recommend focusing on one in particular to start with,  but instead just reading, researching, and (perhaps most importantly) working with all of them as much as possible. The idea is to get a feel for the forces they embody and how they interact with your psyche right now, both as concepts and as actual physical matter.

By “as concepts,” I mean developing connections not (just) with the physical things representing each element, but with the plethora of mental associations that exist for each, as well. This means that, to connect with (for example), water, I would recommend not simply interacting with water or ritual tools but doing research into the nature of emotion, which is strongly associated with water in the Western Magical Tradition. Similarly, connecting with air would involve more than burning incense (though doing that can be awesome, as well) - air is associated with intellect and swiftness, so exploring your intellectual side is helpful in understanding it.

This is not as well-known as it used to be, but some ancient peoples thought of the elements themselves as combinations of fundamental universal principles. In the image above, I discuss this. They tended to see each element as active or passive as well as categorizing them into mutable and fixed.

I struggle a bit with certain elements (earth, mostly) and it does help sometimes to think of things this way. In terms of finding your element, you might ask yourself if you’re more active or passive. You might then explore whether you’re prone to change (mutable) or more consistent (fixed). You could then look into the elements associated with those categories in turn.

One thing that I found helpful over the years - scrying the elements. Most people think of scrying as fortunetelling, but the same technique can be used to explore a concept like an element.  As I described in the image above, I do believe each element as a medium has advantages in terms of particular scrying topics, but it is equally possible to just scry on the subject of the element’s place in your own life. I would recommend doing this with the element itself as a medium, if possible, but I realize not everyone can do that.

One technique for doing this would be to frame each scrying session as spirit communication and call on the spirits traditionally believed to rule over each element. You may have heard of entities called undines, sylphs, gnomes and salamanders - though they sound a bit fanciful, those are just terms for any spirit borne of a particular element. Undines are water-creatures, gnomes are associated with earth, sylphs are airy, and salamanders are fiery. All are often called “elementals.”

I’ve personally sought the four elemental kings, who are said to supervise these creatures, but there are other entities traditionally associated with each element, as well. I recommend this site for more information about them, but Wikipedia actually has a good overview, too. If you’re not much for scrying to communicate with specific spirits, you might try (as I said) just asking to receive knowledge regarding how a particular element is manifesting in your current life.

One thing worth remembering: even in the system of the ancients, the elements were far from the whole story in terms of how they described reality. In the diagram below, which resembles on seen in Robert Allen Bartlett’s book, Real Alchemy (credit where credit is due!), you can see how alchemists in particular developed the notion of elements in combination creating three essential forces: mercury, salt, and sulphur. These are concepts, not actual physical chemicals, though. You may actually find that one of these describes you better, thus implying you’d have dual elemental association at this point in time. I’ve met people who identified, for example, with mercury more than anything else.

I realize that if you’re experiencing anything like downswings (I’ve had ‘em before), this whole process can be difficult, though, but I don’t think it’s something to stress over. It might be helpful to just enjoy the elements in and of themselves for a while, if you can. I know that when I was depressed, I’d do things like burn candles, incense, or making tea, all exercises that could be magical if you see them right, but I didn’t force myself to think too much about deeper aspects of it again until I started getting better. No one knows you better than you, though, so I’d suggest experimenting to figure out what helps you feel better when these things happen. For me, it was just simple exercises that I didn’t put much thought into until later, but you’re a completely different person and might respond better to something else. I really wish you the best and hope things get better for you.

A Court of Flames and Curses (3)

the 4th book in the ACOTAR series ~ 1 2

“I don’t understand why we didn’t dock where you came from to follow your path to the lake.”

Lucien looks at Nesta irritably. “The tides make it difficult. And I told you, we moved at night so Vassa could walk with us and share information. I wouldn’t remember the path through the forest now.”

“We’re here,” Cassian says, holding the map up in front of Nesta and jabbing a coastal spot near the circled patch of forest. “It’s almost due east of here.”

“Why shouldn’t we try to go directly to the lake?”

“Best to meet the Suriel—”

“The Wayfinder,” Lucien corrects.

“—and see what it has to say about the matter.”

“We only get one question,” Nesta says. “And we already know, roughly, where the lake is.”

“We can ask how to break the curse,” Amren says, appearing on deck with her pack. “And who put it on her, since she doesn’t know.”

“A nymph. We know that,” Nesta says.

Cassian rolls the map and tucks it into her bag. “All we know is that he’s a nymph. No forest spirit disappears into the human lands without reason.”

“Nor any Suriel,” Lucien adds.

“Come on,” Amren says, pushing between Lucien and Cassian to lead the group. “We’ve discussed this enough. We need to wade in.”

My blog is one year old!

Tumbler let me know recently that my blog is a year old!  I wish I could say something snarky about this blue hole of procrastination, but I’m just really thankful for this awesome fandom and all the wonderful people who make it happen!  So here’s a little something fluffy to celebrate:

Sansa eyed Jon over the top of her wine glass.  He was always a wonderful boyfriend but tonight he’d really outdone himself.  Their one year anniversary had started with flowers, then tickets to the symphony–even though she knew he hated it–and now an incredible dinner.  It was a restaurant she’d been dying to try but could never get a table.  Everything had been amazing, from the food to the wine, of which Sansa had several glasses.  Then there was Jon himself.  He was decked out in a suit and tie.  She couldn’t help but think about pulling his tie down to get at the skin below it.

“You know Jon, the bathrooms here are like, individual bathrooms.  They’re really private,” she said, finishing her glass and placing it on the table.

yooooo! what are your fav becommissar fics? do you have any recommendations? i hope you're having a good day + i adore your blog so much!!

Aaaa, I adore your blog too! Is it weird that I squealed at your lovely words? Probably. Ah well, I’m weird myself.

The Becommissar fandom is one that has created the 2nd most amount of fics out of all the Pitch Perfect ships with arguably the least amount of canon (we don’t even know the Kommissar’s name!) and is chock full of incredible writers and gripping fics, so I have no idea where to start! Here are a few that popped into my mind:

  • The Heart Doesn’t Lie by greg-the-di (Teen, WIP):  ‘Kommissar and Pieter have an argument that changes how they see each other; afterwards, Kommissar needs time away from him to recover. Instead, she finds Beca, who helps in unexpected ways.’ @greg-the-di is a brilliant writer, okay. Basically any fic of hers is a top recommendation. It’s a chapter in, and I can’t wait to read what’s happening next.

  • Better by greg-the-di (Mature, 8959 words): ‘In the middle of the night, a stressed out Beca receives a text message from a number she doesn’t recognise. She’s unsure of where it will lead, but she’s damn sure going to find out.’ This is probably my absolute favorite Becommissar fic. It has (s)texting *cough*, confused Beca, their first date and a love scene that I may or may not have re-read multiple times. A classic in the Becommissar fandom.

  • Time is Running Out by MercutioLives (AU, Explicit, 3894 words): ‘Soulmate timers are all the rage, so Beca Mitchell decided to blow $200 to get one. Too bad it’s broken.’ @acemordred is another writer and person I adore, and this is my favorite fic from last year’s Becommissar Week why didn’t we have one this year *cries* Very imaginative story and great spin on soulmate clocks. Plus I’m still in awe of the awesome mock Tumblr headers he created for this!

  • It’s Going Down, I’m Yelling Tinder by inkheart9549 (Mature, 11,488 words):  ‘It’s a week after the breakup with Jesse and Beca has been doing nothing but sulking. Stacie, as a last resort to get her to move on introduces Beca to Tinder. The confidence boost from people liking her is nice, but she doesn’t really do anything other than swipe through. Until they get to worlds and a certain gorgeous German pops up on her screen, then things get a bit interesting.’  Pacy writing, nice idea and meddling Bellas are always a welcome addition to a Becommissar fic. Plus the smut doesn’t hurt *looks away*

I’ll stop at four, because this fandom is bursting with creative and captivating fics! By no means is this an exhaustive list, and I know I’m missing out on a bunch of talented writers. I also love the ficlets here on Tumblr, which I’ll reblog again and tag you! Hope you enjoy these fics and long live Becommissar <3

anonymous asked:

Wich artists inspire you!!!

Oh heck… There’s so many to choose from!!! I’ll try to keep it to a minimum, but honestly every piece of art I look at and enjoy motivates me in different ways so there may be a fair few!

It was @walkingmelonsaaa‘s speedpaints that first got me into digital art, and I still watch them alllll the time cuz they’re SUPER helpful to learn, and beautiful to watch! (She’s also started monthly art talks and tutoriels, check them here!)

@feth and of course @loverofpiggies were the reasons why I made a tumblr account to start with, so I could get notifications when they posted - and later to post my own art in the hopes of someday being as good as them! I’m still nowhere near that goal yet, but I know if I stay determined and work hard one day I’ll achieve it!

@mrsbushlikestodraw has such BEAUTIFUL watercolour artwork, and I’m super jealous of how well she can paint space! Looking through her blog always satisfies my aesthetic cravings owo

Last but not least, where would I be without @omgaflyingpig, @ashwolfcub, and @milkyresearches?! You’re all amazing people and the best friends, your kind words keep me focused and never fail to lift my spirits when I’m feeling down. Omega’s linework is always ON POINT, Ash’s style is so smooth and neat, and Milky’s ink drawings are super pretty and unique to look at!

I hope that answered your question; there’s a ton more that I could rant on about given half a chance but for the sake of not flooding your dash that’s the main peeps for now! To everyone in this post, even if you don’t see it I hope you have a great day and stay awesome! ( * ^∀゚)ъ

Never stop what you're doing! I don't care if your predictions come true or not. I'm always excited to read them & when you're right, but if canon serves us something different, then I don't think people can blame awesome meta writers like you for raising the bar too high. I also love how you promote "Let the writers tell their story" before complaining. Would I have like something less open ended for FS? Sure! Was it an amazing episode nonetheless: Hells yes! Summary: Love what you do! ❤️❤️

@agent-bash  said:  You are amazing. Screw that other anon and everything they said. You’re amazing. Everything you do for this fandom goes above and beyond truly. Your theories/meta, the answers to the asks you get, how reassuring you are to those who come to you panicked. It’s incredible! You almost always preface or close everything with the fact that it’s only a theory based on your interpretation of the show and articles anyone who reads them for absolute need to read a little closer. Thank you for all you do!

Anonymous said:  Hope you’re okay after that episode. Thanks for everything you do. I guess a lot of us are just frustrated with the show right now. I have to be honest I still haven’t decided if I’m going to watch next season. It wasn’t only the fans who were misled, it was the tv writers too. If you back to all the interviews after the LMD pod ended almost all the writers asked about a Fitzsimmons engagement or wedding. They continued to ask about it until right before the finale, they clearly thought some reporters thought something was up, or going to happen as well. They paid off the whole conversation about Fitz’s father, so a lot of people they would pay off the marriage talk as well. I guess we were wrong.

Anonymous said:  Hi, I just wanted to say you shouldn’t listen to what that anon said. You’re an amazing part of the fandom and a lot of us are so grateful for all you do. This fandom wouldn’t be the same without you. <3

@youdovethroughaholeintheuniverse    said: Hi! Just wanted to offer some words of thanks and encouragement! I saw that anon who said you should stop predicting because you’re theories sometimes don’t fall through, but that’s ridiculous. They’re theories! That’s the whole point! We’re all just trying to figure out and predict what’s going to happen. What you say is encouraging and positive and informative and amazing. The fandom appreciates you so much and loves all of your metas. Keep on theorizing and DFTBA (Don’t Forget To Be Awesome)!

Anonymous said:  Hello! i just wanna say that you’re amazing and personally i really admire you for your capacity of deduction, you’re dedicating a lot of your time to us, you deserve all the LOVE. i am so grateful with all you do and thank you for another season, we’re here with you for another one.

@0hcicero  said:Hey my favourite Science fiction Sherlock investigating fandom queen, I just wanted to pop by your inbox and tell you that A) I will seriously punch that anon in the dick if you want me to, and B) you are loved, all that you do is valued and appreciated, and that this fandom adores you for all of the time and dedication you give us. You’re always the soul of circumspection, and a true balm to so many disappointments. You are wonderful, you are loved, and you didn’t deserve what that anon said.

@ultimate-fangurl  said: Hey I saw your were getting some mean comments and just wanted to let you know that so many of us really really appreciate what you do :) this fandom just wouldn’t be the same without you and I know how much hard work you must put into it. You are always so kind, polite and helpful plus a real genius and writing metas and making predictions (even if they’re not always 100%, they’re still AMAZING predictions!) so thank you so much! ps I have a million questions but I’ll let you catch your breath!

said  :Don’t listen to that anon! You do a great job! You’re kind and smart and have lots of geat theories. I always like reading what you write. Thank you for everything you do for the fandom!

Anonymous said:  Hi I disagree with that Anon. Your theories gave me hope when I had none for this show. And the thing is- they are theories! No one had to come read but we all wanted to. It’s no ones personal responsibility for getting the fandom to become entitled? Please know that your work provides lots of happiness and is very appreciated.

Have to say I am completely and utterly overwhelmed by the response guys.   I was shocked when I logged on this morning.   Thank you everyone so much for your messages and comments.  And @ughfitz for that post.  You guys have me in tears and I am truly touched right now.  I’ve taken my breath and am ready to get back to ‘work’.
