Color Reference Guide to Recognize & Avoid Whitewashing
I’ve made a tutorial on how to color adjust to fix washed out colorings, but I noticed people aren’t always sure when their coloring needs fixing in the first place. So I’ve made a bunch of colorings you can use to compare your own to. It’s designed to help avoid whitewashing, but also help avoid over-correction.
If you’re not a content creator, you can also use this guide for reblogging as well. :)
Using the Guide
Each set comes in three: cool, neutral, and warm. If your coloring is bluer/whiter than the cool tone, consider readjusting.
Examples of what might be too pale/bright are beneath each set
There are various categories (daytime, night scenes, etc) for each type of scene you might encounter
Each coloring has a color palette beneath for the highlights, midtones, and shadows of the character’s face. If you’re having trouble eyeballing it, use the eyedropper tool to double check.
NOTES 1)For the sake of simplicity, I’ve used one character per category, but characters of color are not interchangeable. Identify the skin tone for the character you’re coloring and work with that. This is only meant to give a frame of reference for what is and isn’t whitewashing
2)If any of the colorings look different than what they’ve been stated as (i.e. the cool tones look too warm or some look way too dark to be visible) calibrate your monitor. It means your screen color and gamma needs readjustment.
Tumblr is my fun place, so I don’t usually get into this here, but… reasons.
Lovely people here sometimes use the word ‘Retard’ or ‘Retarded’ or some variation (ie ’________-tard’) and those lovely people do NOT mean anything at all against people with cognitive or physical disabilities.
I understand. I get it. Seriously! I’m not being sarcastic at all. This is on my mind in the friendliest of ways. I don’t mean to embarrass or offend. I just hope to help you understand.
My younger son was born with Down syndrome. He’s doing well (learning, growing, healthy) and I adore him. I’m proud of him. But, for me, slurs against people with disabilities strike a painful nerve. It’s personal. It brings up every fear I’ve ever had about my son being bullied or abused. It hurts.
I can’t step off this soapbox. Life put me on it for keeps.
So, please, consider yourlanguage. ;) Help End the ‘R’ Word.
Dean may have missed out on the fight, but he still feels like drinking when he finally gets back home. Ketch’s expensive bottle of bribery is still sitting on the war room table and his glass is still in his favorite spot, right where he left it.
“Oh, hello, sweetness. Daddy’s here,” Dean coos at it. He hums as he picks up the bottle - still heavy even after a couple of drinks. “Shhh. It’s just you and me now.”
Sam scoffs. “Really, Dean? You’re that easy?”
Dean rolls his eyes over his shoulder. “So?”
Sam doesn’t really want to start anything, he’s feeling too good. He lets Dean smuggle his booze away to his room like always and revels in the still-fresh feeling of adrenaline-fueled ass-kicking. Changing the world. Power in the palms of his hands. He’ll try not to let it go to his head, but he deserves to celebrate the win at least.
Dean, meanwhile, falls like a heavy weight against the back of his bedroom door.
why!! do healthy people insist on judging how a chronically ill person looks every single time they see them, it is not necessary to tell me i look terrible, pale, lost too much weight and tell me to go outside and get some sun and it is not necessary to tell me i look better than the last time you saw me it is not necessary to comment on our looks every single time you see us just because you know we are ill, it doesn’t give you the right to act like you know a thing and understand what’s up or comment on things you normally wouldn’t comment on

Something I wanted to point out about Allura and Lance...
I don’t think their relationship is just a series of Lance flirting and Allura rolling her eyes.
So remember in episode 3 of season 2 how when they were going to Ulaz’s communication base Lance offered to stay behind to “protect the princess”? (this glorious face may jog your memory):
We all know he’s the curious adventurous type, so of course he’d want to go with the others to check out the space-folding rebel base run by the guy who saved Shiro, right? But he doesn’t. And it’s not like Shiro said one person needs to stay behind. Lance completely on his own volunteered. The question is why?
Of course Allura doesn’t really need any protection in this situation, but I do think that Lance stayed back for Allura’s sake…
So at first I just wanted to draw Gen in a waistcoat… and then I wondered ‘who is he looking at like that?’ and then of course it turns out he’s at some fancy BDSM party and he never thought he’d see Sephiroth there but lo and behold, it’s the man in the flesh, and he doesn’t look too pleased at being found out by his colleague. Or maybe Genesis sent him an invite, thinking he’d never come, and thus he’s pleasantly surprised?
