you seem to enjoy ship fics a lot. would you say you prefer those or reader fics?
well I definitely prefer m/m fics over reader insert, but it’s not necessarily because they’re m/m that I enjoy them more. it’s just that I prefer third person, and that is what m/m fics tend to be. I just find that with third person, or since we’re talking specifically member x member, writers can convey a lot of emotion without having to bang you over the head with narration like you do with having an oc and writing in second person. sometimes I read reader insert fics and I don’t feel connected with the oc bc I know people can sometimes just make oc’s sort of cut-outs or stand-ins for the plot, or on the other hand sometimes the narration kind of just drowns you bc writers really want to make sure you know where the oc is coming from since she’s obviously made-up and you have no basis of their character, not even a name (I feel that I have this problem actually. I spend a lot of time on random narration that maybe I could cut out, but I do so bc again it’s an oc and you need some thread to connect with her on some level), whereas with third person, I’ve read some m/m fics where it’s so bare bones with the narration and it’s mostly riffing and dialogue and I’m just fucking floored by how much I care about them with knowing so little about their true internal thoughts. obviously there are great reader insert fics, don’t get me wrong. just reader insert (2nd person) gives me a very different feeling / vibe than m/m (3rd person). bc if I had to give a list of maybe my top 5 fav fanfics of all time, they would all be m/m, but again that’s merely a perspective preference, rather than an m/m preference
