Chuck and Penelope like to play a lot of fun bitey games with each other! This is a good time for them, but it can be startling to a silly human like myself. How does one tell between fun bitey game time and actual aggression between dogs?

I’m not an expert aaaaaat aaaall – but some big clues that it’s play vs. something more intense:

  • loose, floppy body language (which is possible even when it’s rough and there’s bared teeth and growling, giving kind of a “HAHA AM MEAN DOG IS JOKE ONLY” feeling to the whole thing)
  • taking turns initiating
  • taking breaks, backing off in response to each other’s calming signals
  • taking turns in different roles (e.g. chaser vs. the one being chased, being pinned vs. doing the pinning)

Some good videos on the spectrum of appropriate dog play:

I think it’s easier to see the difference once you’ve seen examples of play going over the line. This channel has good examples to learn from:

The Facebook group Observation Skills for Training Dogs is a great place to learn too!

That’s definitely not the first thing that should have come to mind, Kuroo

How do you like keeping arboreals as opposed to ground living snakes? Is it a lot harder?

I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily harder; it just has its own set of challenges. Arboreal snakes tend to have different issues come up regarding husbandry and enrichment–for example, when I rescued my Amazon tree boa, the guy who abandoned her said she would never perch and that’s why he didn’t want her (along with the horrible mite infestation she came with).

It turned out she just didn’t like the perches he was providing her and once I gave her something that allowed her more points of contact, she started perching during the day a lot more. Animals seldom do things for no reason and part of being a good keeper is trying to troubleshoot these problems from the animal’s perspective.

Arboreal snakes also tend to behave a little differently in regards to handling. In my experience they tend to be more alert and high strung (this doesn’t necessarily mean aggressive, it might just mean you need to pay more attention to where your fingers are moving around when you handle them to avoid startling them). Treating mites on arboreals can be a bigger ordeal since I’ve found that they’re more susceptible to getting stressed by the bathing process.

I practice what I call “husbandry handling” with my ATB because she’s a slightly nervous animal who prefers not to be handled often–however, I need to be able to do it with as little fuss and stress as possible in case she ever got sick or injured and needed hands-on medical treatment. This basically means I take her out on a regular basis and practice touching gently all over her body in the ways I might need to in order to provide medical assistance, but try to make it as stress-free and short as possible. She prefers to be a hands-off pet, and that’s fine! She’s still pretty chill for an ATB and I’m grateful she’s tolerant of husbandry handling.

Holly, on the other hand, is very laid back and doesn’t mind being handled. I’ve met CBB chondros that were much more nervous and didn’t like handling at all, so this seems to be a matter of individual temperament. She had an infected tooth last year from hitting the tongs and I was able to get in her mouth to treat it with relatively little fuss and stress for her.

This got a lot longer than I meant it to, so I guess the TL;DR version is that keeping arboreals is definitely different, but not necessarily harder if you have the experience and resources to do it properly. I’ve only kept chondros and Amazon tree boas though as far as arboreals go so that’s about all I can speak for.

Doris Delay!

Howdy folks, just to let you know I’m alive and all but I’m stuck down south due to Hurricane Doris (which I can’t get over the name of I mean come on how adorable is this); just means I’ll be travelling back north tomorrow instead, but I might have to pass on updating TPoH this week. What I will do instead is give you a three page update the weekend after instead! How’s that for a trade-in? Anyway. Apologies, love you, stay chill xxx

Another page from a train journey

It is cold. The concrete under Lafay’s feet. The night air. The stuttering stillness of his anxious heart. Everything is cold.

Lafay hasn’t breathed a word, he watches Gaston on the bed, hardly breathing. He has a million things he wants to say. Why did you leave me? Why did you choose her over me? When did I stop mattering to you? But he can’t speak. Even if he did, the chances Gaston would hear him are slim and the chances he would be well-received are slimmer.

So he sits there, watching him day in and day out.

***

In thirteen days, Gaston opens his eyes.

But the first day, they exchange no words. Gaston looks at Lafay, and Lafay looks at Gaston, and they never breathe a word.

Lafay continues sitting in the room, though. The minutes stretch into hours, and he doesn’t move, especially now that Gaston is awake. They gaze each other with novels to say but never speak.

***

Sixteen days into Gaston’s recovery, Gaston finally speaks.

And Gaston says, “Lefou,” and then, “thank you,” in a scratchy voice that is strong albeit quiet. Much like the ocean at night, forceful and serene.

Lafay is at a loss.

“You’re welcome,” the words punch out of him as if they were stolen.

Gaston turns his head toward the window on the opposite wall.

They lapse into silence again.

***

Gaston begins eating more. Lafay begins breathing more.

***

Upon the twenty-first day, they speak some more.

“No one asked this if you,” Gaston accuses, “and yet here you are.”

Lafay ponders this, then agrees with a nod, “Here I am.”

Gaston fists his hands in the blanket of the bed. His jaw is set, face tense. Lafay watches curiously to see if Gaston will say something damning or something redeeming.

It turns out, he says something redeeming.

“Why?” he bursts, “Why do you stay?”

Lafay shrugs. He’d asked himself the same thing a million times, and each time finds but one irrational, irrelevant answer.

But saying it out loud is too difficult, so Lafay says, “Isn’t it obvious?”

***

The next day Gaston says, “What have I done to deserve this?” quickly and bemusedly.

“You turned the entire town against an innocent man-!”

“No,” Gaston interrupts. “Not- Not this,” he gestures to himself. And then to Lafay. “You. What have I done to deserve being saved and cared for by you?”

Lafay’s heart stops. He expected Gaston to thrash and yell, maybe even run back to the village to finish the job he’d started. It’s he monster he became. Lafay wouldn’t be surprised. He never expected Gaston to receive and welcome help.

“Gaston-”

“And don’t start with the cryptic responses, Lefou. It isn’t obvious and I don’t understand. All that I know is I was commanding an army and protecting our village one minute- and the next something happened. Now I’m here.

"I’ve obviously done something wrong,” Gaston finishes. “I only wish I knew what it was, and how things turned out the way they did.”

Lafay nears the bed and habitually grasps Gaston’s shoulder. He wanted to reassure him. He wanted to cheer him up. But he couldn’t, because he didn’t know who Gaston was anymore. Was Gaston the same man who fought wars with him, defended the weak? Was Gaston the same man who tried to kill the father of a woman he claimed to love?

Was Gaston the same man who left Lafay to die in the castle?

“Gaston…” Lafay starts. “Tell me honestly why you attacked The Beast that night.”

And Gaston replies, “To save Belle-”

“No,” Lafay stops him. “Tell me why.”

There’s a breath of silence.

“I-” Gaston stops.

“Because I think- I want to think and hope to think- it’s because you were scared,” Lafay starts rambling. “None of us had ever seen magic like that before. Tell me you were just confused and scared and you wouldn’t have hurt anyone if you were yourself.”

Lafay stops. Then, says, “Tell me that you left me because you were not yourself.”

“Lefou,” Gaston says pleadingly, “I regret that more than I regret anything I’ve ever done.”

Lafay laughs brokenheartedly, massaging his shoulder more aggressively. “Gaston we both know regret isn’t something you identify with-”

“You’re wrong,” Gaston says. “I know I haven’t much experience in the past, but any word said to mean regret is nothing without accommodation for how I feel knowing I betrayed you-

"And for what? A stupid girl. I don’t care about Belle. I know that now. I don’t think I ever cared about her. I wanted something to be an example of- an example of what it is to be normal. Because what I want isn’t.

"Lefou,” Gaston stresses. “what I want isn’t normal.”

Lafay’s heart stops with each syllable, hands slowing until they rest softly on Gaston’s collarbone. Gaston can’t be saying what Lafay thinks he’s saying.

“Forgive me if I am misreading this, but I want you, not Belle.”

He is.

Lafay suddenly can’t breathe. In a thousand varieties he’s heard those words, mumbled in the abyss of dreams and the shroud of fabricated memories, but never so clear and real as now. And he doesn’t know what to say.

Time stops, and Lafay forces air in and out of his lungs like factory work.

“I- Of course- Yes. I mean, no, you’re not misreading anything I just-”

“Lefou,” Gaston reaches out with one hand, twisting the fabric of his shirt and dragging his body weight down onto his own.

And they kiss.

So, I just got some super frustrating news. I've been working on getting my body fat % down to at or below 24%, and having taped myself, I thought I was at 27%, so I've been excited. I go in to my recruiter's office to get taped and now I'm 7.5% off my goal. I'm trying to maintain my moto, but damn this is frustrating. I do 2 miles on the treadmill after work every night, at an incline of 10-14 at 3-3.5mph, my diet is good, could be a little better I suppose. BLARG.

This is actually a common occurrence for people. if you feel like you are getting in a rut with your workouts switch up the cardio.

Try biking, swimming, jump rope, elliptical,

You see the body is ONE ADAPTIVE MUHFUGGA so if you do the same thing over and over without increasing the intensity or length of exercises then that is just

The Law of Diminishing Returns

Heres an Example not many know this but theres a misconception that training with high reps only works muscular endurance.

You see when training with high reps with an exercise you can very well put on strength and size but the problem is as you become stronger and doing more repetitions, the noticeable gains in muscle mass and strength go down.

So while thinking the more reps you add, the stronger you get they are actually making the increases in strength and size smaller.

So while reps in the range of 20- 40 where muscle failure is hit and you can do no more with good form, That can actually build an impressive amount of strength and muscle.

But the higher above this you go the smaller the increases in strength and muscle mass.

the level of profits or benefits gained is less than the amount of energy invested.

As you keep adding to the number of reps you can do, strength is less affected and endurance is more affected. until you are doing so many pushups that changes in strength are no longer measurable.  That happens somewhere around 130-150 reps, according to the various researches.

SO I could do say 1000 Squats but Honestly while it be great my muscular endurance if im looking for Strength and Size it probably be better just to add more weight and do less reps.

But there are folks like Herschel Walker who does 1000s of Pushups and Situps everyday and get INSANE BENEFITS but he is an anamoly

But anyways to get back to what you were saying.

Stop doing the Same old Same Old and switch it up. It keeps your workouts more fun and also helps you keep getting results.

BUT REMEMBER IF YOU ARE NOT SLEEPING A MINIMUM OF 8-9 HOURS WHILE WORKING OUT AND EATING HEALTHY NUTRITIOUS FOODS FOR THE MAJORITY OF YOUR CALORIES then you are honestly wasting Time because only when they all work together do you get the best results

So Don’t give up. Stay consistent and keep at it

Chapter 1 - The Dungeon.

Special thanks to @trippyridehome for providing the original story, and to @undercover-witch for her help translating it.

The air in the cellar was stifling as humidity rose from the damp stone walls. The old castle’s dungeon has long been abandoned, its iron bars destroyed and rendered useless. However, there was someone of value there.

“……I’m underground even at a time like this.”

“Of course. Got any complaints?”

The reply came from an indisposed looking superior officer who hastily brushed up his wet bangs.

The Survey Corps were training outside when it started pouring so heavily that the thick fog even blurred out the color of their smoke grenades. The unit leader who was overseeing the march fired a star-shell stopping everyone. The orders were for each squad to go take shelter from the rain in the abandoned buildings nearby.

“None. I understand the ins and outs of how this works.”

“It wouldn’t be a big deal if it was just my squad, but the whole Survey Corps branch is out on this training march… Catch my drift?”

A young man by the name of Eren sat hugging his knees, looking downwards in the dimly lit dungeon which was once divided by iron bars.

“I shouldn’t cause unnecessary distress for the squads that distrust my ‘Titan power’…”

Exactly. Levi, the superior officer holding the light, turned towards him.

Eren was still in his rain gear. He looked like a puppy abandoned on the side of the road. Rain drops were dripping off him and his ever-present frown was even worse than usual.

For goodness’s sake… He looks like a damn beggar from the Underground City. He’s no longer who he used to be, he’s lost a lot and now he’s just dragging himself to wherever he’s told to go. Guess being called ‘humanity’s hope’ is taking a toll on him.”

After a deep, long sigh Levi gave a swift order.

“Take off that drenched raincoat and hand it over. I’ll set it to dry by the fire upstairs.”

“…Yes sir.”

He lethargically unclasped his rain gear and squeezed the excess water out of it before handing it over to Levi. Eren’s cold, trembling hand didn’t go unnoticed. Levi called out to his standby soldiers upstairs.

“…I can’t let him in the pits of despair like this.”

“Petra! Take Oluo and come keep an eye on Eren.”

“Yessir!”

Petra came down the stairs and saw Eren slouched, looking downhearted, while Levi obviously had no idea how to handle it. She made sense of the situation fairly quickly.

“Understood. Sir… Are we keeping him locked in the dungeon until the rain stops? That’s a bit…”

“It’s a temporary solution. Hange’s going to check whether the castle’s structure is sturdy enough to contain Eren’s Titan transformation… Once I get the confirmation, I will allow Eren to go out.”

“That’s great news. I hope you walk free soon. Your teammates are here as well. Would you like to see them?”

“They are? I want to, but I’m not sure how they feel…”

“They’d be delighted to see you! You’ve been training in different squads for a while now.”

Levi turned around to leave. After hearing Petra’s cheerful words of encouragement he was convinced once again that he did the right choice by picking her to be a soldier in his squad.

“Come on, quit moping around. The weather’s depressing enough.”

“S-Sorry.”

As he was climbing up the stairs Levi turned around and took in Eren’s slightly more relaxed expression.

For my fellow Muslims who suffer from mental illness, I’d like to share a tip I learned from my wonderful counselor (who I miss so much now that I live out in the boonies and have no access to therapy services anymore).

She was non-Muslim, but upon learning that I was Muslim and learning a little about Islam and what I do during the day as a Muslim, ie praying five times a day, wudu, etc, she taught me to incorporate grounding techniques into my prayers as a way to keep consistent not only spirituality but also in my treatment of my OCD.

I tend to start missing prayer when I have an OCD related anxiety attack. So, she taught me to start using prayer when I’m having good days to teach myself to associate prayer with grounding techniques for when those bad days come. So, for example, every time you pray, either at the beginning, or the end, or both, do 10 deep breaths. Do some grounding techniques. The one she taught me was where you identify five things you can hear, five things you can feel, five things you can see and five things you can smell (if you can). And then, you go around again, this time finding four things of each, three things of each, two, one, etc. So, you do this during prayer (I usually do it afterwards when I do it) and you start implementing it before you have an anxiety attack.

There is also another technique where you picture your problems written on the side of a train. In your mind, you see the train coming with your problems written on the side of it. You mentally watch the train go by, and then acknowledge the problem exists, but that you are not going to obsess over it, and then mentally watch the train go by, taking your obsessions over the problems with it. I tend to do that technique after making dua and talking to Allah about my problems, because then that helps me not to dwell after taking my worries to Allah and relieves my anxiety a bit.

I found this really helpful to help me not abandon prayer when I have a bad OCD day, or just a bad day in general, because I’ve associated my grounding techniques with prayer or dua, so now prayer is a calming experience for me, not just spiritually, but for treatment, as well. I’m not saying this is a perfect science or that you’ll never miss prayer again because of this, because I know those of us struggling with varying degrees of severity with mental illness will have some dark days. I’m just saying that this can helpful if prayer is something you would like to focus on while also coping with a mental illness. I hope it’s beneficial to someone out there.
