you see that lens

You do not owe anyone anything.

If you change your mind about what or who you want in your life, that is absolutely fine. Life is all about adapting to change.

Some people turn everything into a hassle and drain the life out of you. They see the world through a negative lens when they have so much to be grateful for. They let you down. They make excuses. They never apologise.

Others make life easy, they are always real with you. They forgive all the little things and everything just flows. They are on your team. They want to see you succeed. They want to see you happy.

It’s simple. Know the difference.

Work managed to distract you enough to not keep looking at the clock every five minutes. Despite part of your brain telling you that there was no way you had a date with Captain America, there was another part that couldn’t help but to hope this was true. And so, you found yourself daydreaming of showing up to the restaurant and seeing him there. What would you even say to him? What kind of greeting would you use? Would you address him as Captain, or maybe Mr. Rogers, or just Steve?

By the time you got home, you had a few outfit options in mind and made a beeline to the bathroom, taking a shower before you got started on getting ready.

Peter came around as you were choosing between four different outfits you had draped on your bed. He helped you picked the one that was form-fitting, waggling his eyebrows playfully.

“We gotta tease him,” he said.

Not su critical, but I wish there was less human episodes and plot's loose ends weren't left forgotten for literal ages. I just, idk, feel like crewniverse wants us like lars or ronaldo too much

i mean, by definition it’s not forgotten if it’s brought up again. the show is just very long-term and demands you have a lot of patience sometimes (which makes it satisfying when it happens, but it can also be frustrating before that).

on the subject of humans: i’m not always super invested, but there’s always a rewarding or clever element. i like connie, kiki and sadie a lot. greg’s alright. the cool kids too. while onion’s not my favorite, his episodes tend to be solid and gives us interesting steven-characterization (onion gang was quite nice, they finally made me emotional about both onion and steven’s loneliness).

i have a buddy who loves lars with all his heart - i know he’s not the most popular character, but i like him alright, too. he’s the kind of teenager who can be a jerk without being a one-note bully. there’s a good post going around about you kinda need to see the humans to feel the payoff of them (spoilers) seemingly getting kidnapped in this next bomb, which will be another interesting mix of the human and magical elements of the show.

the “slice of life” elements also has another important function, which i think is vitally important - in fantasy / sci-fi stories, there’s a lot of Othering. by which i mean, strictly good vs evil escapism where a lot of the time, the enemy is so inhuman they might as well be a natural disaster, not a person. good and evil is often decided by which magical species or alien race you belong to, not who you are as a person.

slice of life is the complete opposite - you have your jerks, but they’re still human. those stories rarely end with anyone being murdered for their crimes and this being portrayed as a “victory”. it’s pretty common that while the main character’s perspective expands, we get to know even those characters who we assumed were just cruel or bullies. everyone has some struggle going on, and the punishments for their crimes are not that they’re irredeemable or die. rather, they’re allowed to actually develop and/or have nuances to them.

both sci-fi and fantasy also have an expectation of war in recent years - there’s the expectation of constant high stakes and people getting killed. the plot is expected to constantly be the focus - we need to find the Thing to fight the Dark Side. we need to get to Place before Evil gets there first. the Chosen One needs to collect all five Orbs, four of which symbolize the four friends, and the fifth one will awaken her own power. the Enemy needs to be Stopped, their reasons are (usually) irrelevant.

on the other side, slice of life is very personal: everything is character-driven, and their motivations is the main reason to watch it. i saw a lot of surprise that “yuri on ice” didn’t have a traditional villain - my response was basically “…well, yeah, it’s slice of life”. that’s kinda how it usually works. especially in anime - you may not get to know every character equally well, and some will be deeply flawed, but no one is sorted into a box labelled “inhuman” or “evil”.

so what’s my point? well, steven universe continuously trains its audience to see slice-of-life elements in the ~magical space conflict. it tells you to see the characters through a ‘human’ lens, even the characters who aren’t human. part of how it does this is by adding surprising amounts of empathy and human solutions - not just to the beach city problems, but to the gem problems as well.

the first time we see two diamonds together - the Intergalactic Tyrants™ who most fanart depict as the final boss overlords all the “less-awful” characters will unite against in a Final Battle? oh, they’re grieving the loss of their fellow diamond. blue diamond is crying. their pearls are there, standing as a reminder of the hierarchy they champion, but neither element ruins the other - they can be sympathetic and deeply flawed at the same time. when it’s towards the people they care about, they even seem well-intentioned. yellow diamond chastises blue for not being a good leader to her people.

part of the reason this seems natural is because the show has portrayed its human characters as flawed, not as a faceless mass of “good people” who must be saved from the evil alien race. so it makes sense it would work the other way around too - everyone’s got their own stuff to deal with, and everyone makes (sometimes massive) mistakes.

we’re expected to see both gems and humans as people. part of this is because of the human side of steven’s upbringing - the old crystal gems are used to meeting allies and enemies, steven is mostly used to meeting people, even if he (like everyone) has his own biases between them, or thinks some of them are “mean”.

despite some people’s consistent insistence that any jerk we’re introduced to is just a villain, that’s it, end of story, steven universe continues to challenge those assumptions. time and time again. that’s part of why it’s so vital (to me) that no one are just killed off or bubbled forever, because the show has laid the groundwork that every life is unique, and suffering is never a good thing.

it can be a trade-off, like how we’re exploring rose’s shattering of pink diamond, and yknow, there WAS a war in the style of sci-fi/fantasy, but the show is critical of that solution. pink’s shattering did not, in fact, end the conflict - her death left countless gems leaderless, mourning and FAR from ‘liberated’ (in fact, many of them hate the crystal gems), and earth was still under the slow threat of the cluster… and how was that cluster solved again? not by force, but by talking to a hostile and vicious little green alien. then getting her help to reach the huge, suffering eldritch abomination in the center of the earth… which was also stopped by communication, not by force.

the human side of the show helps steven cope with gem life, make connections that are important to him, develop his character and fuel his desire to help.

i know some will insist these are unrelated, but i think without steven’s human side, he would really “just” be another crystal gem. an empathetic one, who is curious about people, but not on this level. not one who opposes the idea of not just shattering, but wants to find a way to connect with everyone (as he is like no one and everyone), and has the kind of boundless optimism where he refuses to accept that this is just “the way things are”, or that suffering is ever necessary. everything is always changing on earth, and because of that, steven wants to believe everything can always change.

1. The friends you have at the beginning of the year can completely change by the end of it. People change, and if they aren’t improving your life in some way, it’s okay to drop them.

2. Take many pictures. Don’t let it take over your life, though. You don’t want to look back and see that you only captured your memories with your camera lens and not within your mind and heart.

3. Find your safe place. Whether it be in the arms of a certain person or on the balcony of Barnes and Nobles with a cup of soup, find it and don’t let it go. You can have more than one safe place.

4. Be nice to everyone. You honestly don’t know what skeletons people are hiding in their closets. Everyone has their skeleton. Every person on this earth has something in their life or past worth collapsing on the ground in uncontrollable sobs over.

5. Reading is so important. Highlight the things that you read that you find intriguing. Read a lot, it can only do good things for you.

6. Writing always helps.

7. The girl with anxiety has the deepest thoughts. The autistic boy has the kindest heart, and the schizophrenic has the ability to put a smile on your face in seconds. Do not judge character based on a mental illness.

8. Music has an indescribable ability to connect and heal. Let it do its thing.

9. Her prettiness doesn’t make your prettiness any less pretty.

10. Getting close and letting someone in is scary as hell. You know what else it is? Worth it.

11. The minute you feel your happiness being dictated by someone else, take a break from them.

12. Adventuring is a must. Sunsets always help the soul, showing that endings can be as beautiful as beginnings.

13. Spend more time with your parents doing things they enjoy. Later in life, you’ll be wishing you’d spent more time with them than on your Netflix account.

14. Home is not always a place, but whatever you love with your whole heart. I have many homes, and it’s okay if one home doesn’t feel like home anymore.

15. Making someone smile and feel genuinely happy has the ability to warm your heart from the inside out. No matter how much pain someone is going through, you made them forget about it for a few seconds. Isn’t that something?

16. Feel everything and let it hurt, but don’t go back to what broke you.

17. Don’t let fear hold you back from what you want. The view from the other side is spectacular.

18. Tell people how you feel. Even if you’re scared it’ll burn your life to the ground. You say it loud.

19. You find the most extraordinary things in the most ordinary places.

20. Swollen lips and sweaty “I want you’s” can make you feel again, but I don’t want to feel anything if it means having to sit there feeling like the wind is constantly being knocked out of me when he stops calling back.

21. Sometimes the way you think of someone isn’t the way they actually are.

22. Never underestimate the amount of joy the holiday season can bring you. Try and find ways to feel that way all year long.

23. Timing is never going to be perfect; if you care about something enough, you’ll make the time. It’s all about priorities.

24. If women used their words to build each other up instead of tearing each other down, our world would change drastically.

25. Recovery can take 2 weeks or 5 years. You aren’t any less of a person if it takes you longer to find a way to let go of what’s hurting your heart.

26. You only need yourself, but having people by your side trying to understand means a lot more than you might think.

27. You find your truest friends in your darkest hours.

28. You can feel the whole world in a month and nothing after 2 years. Time does not define love.

29. Always say yes to dessert.

30. Concerts make life worth living. So does yelling your favorite song along with your best friend in the car with your best friend with hands intertwined. These are things that show you that you don’t need to be on drugs to feel invincible.

31. So does kissing.

  • Reaper: Those three are the only members.

Black and White (Jughead x Reader Soulmate!AU)

The world had hidden colors within reach.

Black and White hid the vibrant colors from those who weren’t lucky enough to find their soulmate at a young age.

Some saw colors at age 6.

While Some never saw the greens and blues the world had to offer.

In the small town of Riverdale, it was uncommon for those to find their soulmate with those they grew up with.

But there was always childhood friends who find themselves staring at their soulmate’s eyes and seeing colors bleed out of the plain black and white.

You were different than the others.

The Black and White. It captivated you.

The idea of vibrant colors. The Purples, pinks. All of it made you wonder how it came from the black and whites.

How could one look in a stranger’s eyes make you seen a whole rainbow of colors?

Doomworld - Len’s Progression

I’ve literally rewatched all of Doomworld to make sense of Len’s characterization and honestly, I don’t think it’s as far off as I originally thought it was, or that it’s irreconcilable with the Len we know. After I calmed down, I could make sense of so much of his behavior by reading between the lines.

So I’m sharing that with you, a sort of quick look into his scenes in the episode.

Long post, no gifs, but here we go.

Gwenpool lenses tutorial

things you will need!
-a spandex/lyrca white mask
-black curtain grommets (I used Dritz, make sure they are 1 and 9/16 of an inch, but I’m sure there are other brands)
-some kind of acrylic glue. please do NOT use super glue or really any other kind of glue, it will MELT your acrylic otherwise!!!!
-circular pink acrylic lenses (I found them on etsy for like… steam punk goggle replacements.) make sure you can see through them. we will handle the mirror lens issue later.
-1 way mirror tint film. I got it here on Amazon this is kind of expensive, and I only used a little, so like… if you want some from me and don’t want to pay that price, just message me! I’ll cut some and mail it to you if you throw me some dolla’ bills for a stamp and envelope!

this can totally work for other characters who have perfectly circle eye holes with a weird color lens too!

specific grommets I got:

specific glue I got:

I bought two colors that were both described as  “pink” but one is totally purple. so here is how you like… assemble your lens!

do NOT put your lens in the middle of the front and back of the grommet. it will not close if you do that.

I wouldn’t suggest snapping together your grommet until you are ready to put it on the fabric, I broke my nail trying to pry it open.

cut eye holes out of your mask so the grommets are eye holes!
snap that shit together!

the back of your mask will look like this:

some of you will be done with the tutorial at this part. that’s fine! your mask will look like this :

but if you want to take it a step further, you can use the 1 way mirror tint. I can see you, but you can’t see my eyes! just follow the instructions on the packaging on how to apply the 1 way tint, or if you do take me up on wanting me to cut some, I’ll send you the directions

Semiotics in Fandom Texts

A brief lesson on media decoding for the Check Please! Fandom

Semiotics is the study of signs/symbols and their use/interpretation. It’s basically how is meaning is created and expressed. Stuart Hall, notably, had a preferred reading theory.

There’s encoding and decoding in all media. The content creator (an artist, journalist, etc) makes a piece with an intended meaning. They encode a message into their work. It’s the job of the audience to take that piece and decode its meaning.

Now, it’s not often that straight forward. It’s not just like you have an audio jack straight from the brain of the creator into your mind so you can download their exact intended message. You have things like ethnic, racial, regional and religious backgrounds. You have how old you are, the generation you were raised in, and  the kind of education (formal or otherwise) that you’ve received. Whether you’re nuerotypical or allisitic sometimes comes into play. What privileges, or lack thereof,  and experiences you carry with you heavily impact how you interpret media. And even when a creator comes out and says “this is exactly the lens through which I want you to see this piece,” that can still be ignored or disregarded.

Hall broke down how an audience decodes meaning into three major categories:

Dominant reading- you’ve hit the nail on the head. This is exactly how the creator intended you to consume this media. You figured out the message and have accepted it as such.

Negotiated reading - you’ve taken the message, and there are parts of it that you accept. You’re negotiating your bias with how much you believe that the intended message is indeed the message. Perhaps you see how it could be interpreted differently, but you’ve chosen to accept your interpretation as THE message.

Oppositional reading - you’ve basically rejected the entire message in favor of something more aligned with your beliefs. This is like when global warning deniers refuse to look at facts and figures because they’ve been conditioned to believe that “the science is still inconclusive”. (just one example, more on this later)

Typically, the way people read media messages is more on a spectrum. So I’ll be using qualifying terms such as “more”, “less”, “closer to” and “further from” in order to describe placement on this spectrum.

“Odds on you jumping into the water?” Joe asked Josh as you guys took a stroll down the beach.

You and the boys were all in Brighton for the week to just relax and have some fun. With the boys’ busy schedules, getting some down time is hard for them so you guys had been planning this weekend for quite some time now.

“1 to 10.”

Since it was night time and the weather wasn’t that nice, you knew Josh would not want to jump into freezing cold water so you weren’t surprised when the odds of him doing it weren’t close together.

“3, 2, 1″ Joe counted down.

“4.” “5.” Joe sighed as he realized he had lost. You laughed at that fact that he sounded like a sad little kid on Christmas who didn’t get what he wanted.

“Come here.” Conor said, pulling you away from the group.

You and Conor have been dating for a couple months now after meeting through Jack. You photographed Jack for a magazine and ever since then, you have become best friends with the boys. Conor immediately took a liking to you and you couldn’t deny the fact that you were super attracted to him so eventually, it grew into more than a friendship.

“Oh, putting (y/n) to work, eh Conor?” Mikey said, as Conor pulled out his phone from his pocket.

Ever since you were little, photography has always been something you loved doing. It was an escape for you and being able to see the world through a different lens was the most amazing thing to you.

“I only like her photos, mate!” He yelled back to Mikey. You laughed at the fact that anytime you and Conor went anywhere that was worth taking a photo of, he always asked you to take one for his Instagram. But you didn’t mind. Being able to take a photo was great all on its own but being able to take a photo of the one person in the world who makes you the happiest was even better.

“Okay, ready?” You asked, holding the camera up and waiting for Conor to pose. You took a few of him, changing up the poses when Joe came over and took the phone out of your hands.

“Go on, get in there!” He said, pushing you towards Conor. Joe was always the first one to comment on how cute you two were or how much of a sappy couple you were but he also admitted to loving the shit out of you.

Conor pulled you closer to him and pressed his lips against yours. He was always so gentle when it came to kissing you because he knew you’d want more and it was his way of teasing you. You pulled away from him, not wanting to be “that” couple but Conor tightened his grip on your waist.

As Joe snapped more and more photos, the others came over and admired how cute you and Conor were. You cheeks started heating up so you tried to escape Conor’s grip but he didn’t want to let you go.

“I’m not finished yet.” Conor whined. “I just want to love you.” You laughed at how big of a baby he was being but you carried on.

“Wow,” Jack said. “She genuinely makes him happy.”

“Did you not think so before?” Oli asked, confused.

“Of course I did but I didn’t really know how happy, you know?”

“Thanks Jack!” You yelled to him as Conor pressed his lips to your cheek. “Okay, let’s get some food.” You said, pulling Conor away from the beach.
