you might have made a mistake

Hey, you. Yeah, you. Reading this right now. Stop what you’re doing for a few minutes and read this, okay? It’s important. It’ll only take a few minutes, I promise.

Let me start off by telling you how incredibly brave you are. I’m serious. You’re living in an uncertain world, and you still woke up today. It doesn’t matter if you got out of bed. If you got dressed. You’re awake. You’re here, with us. With the community online that loves you. You’re here. You could have hidden yourself away today. But you didn’t. You were brave and came to be with your friends today.

You know what else, though? You’re a wonderful person. No, don’t argue. Just listen for now. It’s okay. You don’t have to believe it for it to be true. You have been through so much. It has made you stronger. You are so strong. That doesn’t mean you have to be strong all the time, though. You’re allowed to be weak. You’re allowed to need to lean on someone. It’s okay. Nobody is going to judge you for that. If they do, they must have forgotten that they’ve had to lean before, too.

You are not a mistake. You’re not worthless. You bring joy to peoples’ lives. You might not even know the people that you bring joy to, but they’re there. They exist. Just like others bring joy to your life. That’s an important thing to be a part of. We need more joy in the world. I’m so glad that you’re here to help with that. I’m so proud of you for being here.

You are wanted. You are needed. If something were to happen to you, there are people that would miss you. People who would ask what happened to you. There are people that care about your wellbeing. We love you. It’s okay to come to us when everything feels hopeless. You’re not worthless. I promise.

I’m so, so proud of you and so happy that you’re here, reading this right now. I’m so happy that you’re still with us. Please don’t go where your friends can’t follow. Nobody in the world can replace you.

You can keep scrolling now. Just remember that there’s someone out there that cares about you, okay? Have a good rest of your day.

“A great man is largely forgotten by the public. He doesn’t stand on top of a mountain waving a flag saying, “Look at me—I’m a great man.” A great man often disappears into the ether. Hardly anyone notices that he was even there, apart from his family and close friends. He was reliable. He showed up. He was there. He was useful where he could be. He made mistakes. Tried to make better of those mistakes. Doesn’t mean you have to cure cancer or understand the theory of relativity. It’s not necessarily as rock-and-roll or as cool as you might think. Part of being a great man is accepting that. To dare to be average and normal is actually a pathway to becoming a great man. To have more humility. To accept responsibility more. To just get on with what’s in front of your face. And to leave no fucking indelible mark of your ever being here, apart from the fact that you were there for your family to the best of your ability. It’s not an easy task. I’ll probably fuck it up.”

Symbol of Hope in the Absence of Peace

@swiftwidget and I were talking about the newest chapter which lead to her Symbol of Hope post, and I’d like to add my thoughts which emphasize her points. (EDIT: This got longer than expected!!!)

First, the closing lines of chapter 154:

LET US MOVE BEYOND DESPAIR!!

Despair. The complete loss of hope.

Izuku. The boy no one saw coming. Toshinori never imagined finding his successor in such a way. Revealing his weakness, his uncertainty, his fear. But time and time again, Izuku was there. He disrupts the wavering peace and creeping despair, bringing about hope.

Bakugou. Uraraka. Aizawa. All Might over and over. Todoroki. Iida. EVEN STAIN!* And most recently, Lock Rock, Eri, and Mirio.

Izuku brings hope wherever he goes.

He twists their apparent fates.

Bakugou would have died because of the sludge villain. No one else was acting to save him, even All Might!! But because of Izuku, a quirkless boy, his leap into action caused All Might to surpass his current limits and save them both. The catalyst for change.

Uraraka she could have been seriously injured or died during that exam! There may have been safety measures taken into account, but that giant robot was barreling towards her. Everyone else was running away. Except Izuku.

Aizawa, ready to expel a boy for repeatedly destroying his own body, is amazed by Izuku’s drive, endurance, and willingness to learn and better his control over his self-destructive quirk. He gave Aizawa hope - surpassing his expectations again and again. USJ. Summer Training Camp. Kamino. Overhaul’s hideout. Aizawa holds an immense amount of hope and pride in Izuku, even if he scarcely admits it.

All Might:

Do I even need to say more?

The hope he gives to the others is blatant and I want to mention Stain again.

Stain!

Stain was disillusioned. Heroes, villains, they were all the same, falling to their vices. Pride, greed, revenge, etc. Iida only proved his point that today’s heroes are a far cry from his ideal version of a true hero, “All Might.” In Stain’s eyes only a select few were deemed worthy enough to call themselves heroes… Finally ready to turn his back on even children, still learning and growing, here comes Izuku! Bringing hope to Stain and Iida alike.

A boy like this… He has the makings of a true hero. A hero who follows the teachings of All Might.

And GUESS WHAT! If it weren’t for Izuku butting his nose in, Iida would have died and Stain would likely still be at large, still lacking the audience he needs and wants for his message. Without Izuku, there wouldn’t have been that recorded confrontation with Endeavor. Stain would still be in the back streets, voiceless, preaching to victims who would fall by his hand.

Stain saved Izuku from the noumu. He didn’t have to. He could have easily taken another hostage. But IZUKU proved himself to be a true hero in Stain’s eyes. Someone worth saving. A budding seed. Hope for the new generation of heroes Stain was trying to create. Stain’s roles: “[False] Hero Killer” and “[True] Hero Breeder”

Izuku truly is the Symbol of Hope. Of change. Defying fate. Hope is not something that can be seen. If you are certain of something you can’t have hope. It is the time of uncertainty when hope is most needed.

Sir Nighteye made a mistake in looking into All Might’s future.

All Might needed hope. Hope that he would recover, return to being a hero. Instead, Sir gave him certainty. The certainty that All Might would fall and die at the hands of a villain. And what did Toshinori do? He accepted his fate. He did not hope to change it. He would fall, and he would die, but he would try his hardest to save those he could. HOWEVER, amidst the certainty that he would die… Izuku was there. Toshinori had hope. He had a need to survive. Rather than placing his life in the hands of certainty, he tossed that certainty aside and trusted in hope.

And he lived.

Because of Izuku.

Izuku “Deku” Midoriya.

“The Hero Who Doesn’t Give Up”

The Symbol of Hope.

It was a mistake, a misstep, a moment of weakness. We all have a memory of a time like this. Maybe you messed up, maybe you did something you regret. But please listen when I say you are more than a single moment in time. You might have made a bad choice once but you’ve made millions of good choices in your lifetime and you will make millions more.

bad | 06

He was the cliché bad boy. He was the guy you couldn’t stand. He was the handsome, hot kid who made girls go weak in the knees. He was a brat. You had never liked him one bit, but you had also never gotten involved with anything concerning him. Until one day, when you were in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The Promised No-study SAT Tips

I saw that a lot of you wanted these~ Disclaimer: You still have to know English and the basics of math for these. This goes especially if you’re not a native speaker - your English needs to be at a pretty good level.

General:

  1. Read. A lot. Whenever you see a text that’s at least a paragraph or two long, take time to practice skimming. If you’re bored and have a little time, take something, for example a food wrapper, and try to find occurrences of a word (for example “Acid” for food) as quickly as possible. Hard mode: look for synonyms.
  2. Practice filling out the answer sheet. This is a massive time-sink for a lot of people, so you should practice to eliminate it. Print out an example answer sheet and try filling out the circles quickly and accurately without distracting yourself a lot. Hard mode:Try doing it while not focusing only on the circles - look away or start thinking about the next question.
  3. Check. A lot. The main goal of this strategy is to leave yourself enough time when you’ve filled out an answer for each question when you’re calm, know the questions and can focus on checking. Try and go through the questions, thinking, “This question tests this and that.” If you have the time, look at each answer and identify the error in it (harder for the math questions, but loads of fun if you can do it).
  4. Think in patterns: Whenever you’re stuck on an example question, don’t just check the answer. Try and understand how the person found it, if this question is similar to others you have seen. The SAT only uses a few different types of questions, there will rarely be something to surprise you if you know the common patterns.
  5. Rest: The SAT is a very demanding exam. Give your brain time to relax - my advice would be not to do anything mentally strenuous the day before the test. Also, something I found out from competitions - bring chocolate. The sugar in it helps your brain work better and shrug off tiredness and eating it will draw blood away from your brain, effectively hibernating it for the break to conserve energy. Also, it’s just a really tasty snack!

Writing:

  1. Use the right format for the essay. There are a lot of easy points for using the four/five paragraph system. Introduction, Reason 1, Reason 2, Conclusion. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence and follow up with a story from your life or a book/movie to illustrate it. This way, even without using fancy vocab or grammar, you can get the points for structure and critical thought. Now just try not to make any obvious spelling mistakes and call it a day!
  2. Try to quickly find an argument for the essay. They don’t actually rate how intelligent your argument is. So, take a minute or two, breathe deeply, and no matter how stupid your idea is, write it out. (You might still want to take caution with sensitive topics, especially if you’re an international. A dumb mistake I made in my first sitting was bashing on American charity - that definitely did not endear me to the proctors.)
  3. Paragraphs: You have to have experience reading - look at how the topic never changes abruptly. Insert sentences that link what’s written before and after the gap. Final sentences of paragraphs shouldn’t raise more questions.
  4. Sentence questions: Skim through the questions. Try to answer most of them, the first thing that comes to mind, and fill out the answer sheet immediately. Chances are, if it sounds good to you, it’s the correct choice. Do this quickly, then try and do the paragraphs. After you’ve done this, go back to the questions and start checking.
  5. They usually test for a few broad topics. Identify if each sentence fits one of the patterns and answer accordingly. For the others, try and think what error they might want you to make. If you know you have the time, look at each answer in turn and identify the mistake in it. The most common ways for you to change a sentence would be:
  • Fragments: Try and see if each clause has a subject and a verb. Example: “In the dim light, making his way through the cave.” -> “In the dim light, he makes his way through the cave.”
  • Subject-verb agreement: Make sure that the subject is the one actually doing the action and singular/plural match. Example: “Gathering stones, the river was blocked by the men.” Did the river gather stones? No.
  • Consistency: Make sure that something introduced one way is always referred to like that (don’t switch out ‘one’ for ‘you’ or ‘they’). Make sure there are no extra linkers (”Since I was there, but he went too.”). Check if any verbs change tense when they shouldn’t. Don’t compare apples to oranges (”His homework was as good as John.” -> “As good as John’s”).
  • Adverb or adjective? If it describes a verb, it has a ‘ly’. Example: “She winked playful.” -> “She winked playfully.”
  • Singular or plural? Make sure not to refer to a plural object in singular. “Pandas, numbering in the hundreds now, is an endangered species.”
  • Prepositions, linkers, all the small words Sadly, you’ll have to know how they’re used.

Reading

  1. Word fill: Note the answers that obviously don’t make sense. Mark the one of the others that sounds best to you (in the answer sheet, too!). If you don’t know one or more of the words, aim for simplicity. After you’ve quickly answered all of the reading questions, come back to these. Look at the relationships between the gap and the sentence - are you looking for a positive or negative word? Antonyms or synonyms to something before? Try and guess what unknown words mean. This way, you will probably be able to eliminate all the wrong answers.
  2. Reading comprehension: You are not tested for understanding the text. Keep this in mind. What you are actually trying to do here is quickly find synonyms. If the question asks for “Was Anna’s family a) warm b) cold c) the spawn of Cthulhu?”, chances are that the text contains “Anna’s relatives acted chilly.” or something like that. Read the first question. Skim the text until it comes to that topic, then look for synonyms of the answers. Don’t make deductions! If you come across a ‘general message’ or ‘tone of the author’ question, skip it and answer it at the end of the text. The other questions will be in the same order as the answers are mentioned in the text. Checking: If you have time, look at each answer and try to see what in the text could mislead somebody to make that mistake.

Mathematics

  1. Calculator use: My advice would be to not bring a complex graphing calculator. They just slow you down. Try and do most operations by hand, then use the calculator only for, well, calculations.
  2. Basic topics to know: You are expected to be familiar with how to rearrange equations (ab=1 is the same as a=1/b) and solve linear and quadratics; cosine and Pythagorean theorems; number representations of lines and their intersections; median, mean and mode.
  3. Solve like a crab! One of the best things I learnt in “Fun Math” classes was that problems are solved more easily if you work from the answer back. Try and see what you would need (in terms of information) to find the answer. Then look back to the text of the problem - is what you need there? In most SAT problems, it is, or you can easily find it.
  4. Visualise: Especially for distance or geometry problems, make a small chart of what’s happening. Make lines for the distances the cars traveled or draw that pesky cylinder. Try and see in your mind how different elements move and which stay the same.

I guess this is all that I can say for now. Of course, this is my strategy so it might not work for everyone or it might not work without practice, so don’t think it’s a miracle solve-all. I’m always open for questions about ideas or specific problems, just write an ask~ And good luck to all future test-takers!

what your rising sign needs to hear
  • Aries: You tend to go 100 mph all the time, you are aggressive, rash, assertive, and definitely independent. You are the shooting star in the sky, and no one can stop you from winning the competition. Slow down, before you hurt yourself or others. You need to have patience for those around you. Take a deep breath, everything's going to be okay.
  • Taurus: Unlike Aries, you believe that great things are created by good practice. You take your time, and success never fails on you. You build your own tree, your own garden, but with time in hand. Everything you posses is yours, and no one has the right to touch what's yours. But tame that jealousy, that possessiveness that has control of your heart; because either you or your loved ones are going to end up suffocating.
  • Gemini: You are very talkative, anxious, indecisive and very flexible. You love to seek new travels and adventures, and always ready for something different. To others, you may appear as if you're very confident, and people always tell you how much fun you are. But secretly, you know there are some ruptured dams, and broken pieces down there. So please, take care of yourself and learn how to juggle and control those emotions.
  • Cancer: Your emotions are always going up and down like the tidal waves; but you make sure that there is always security around you even when there's a hurricane occurring. You are sensitive and compassionate, you always love to take care of people gently and kindly. But I am afraid - that one day you will pick up an injured snake and try to mend it back to life, but not knowing that once you have healed it the snake will bite you. Learn to pick the good and the bad.
  • Leo: As Leos are known for, they have big egos and tend to have a more fierce roar than bite. You love the attention, the idea of fame and royalty all just for you. When someone dares to pick and jab with you, you get angry; but not for too long. You wear your heart on your sleeve, and you aren't ashamed about it. But be careful, because when someone knows exactly where your scar is, they'll try to poke it until you bleed again. If someone does, learn how to control humiliation, there will be people who will try to embarrass you. If they do, just keep your head up.
  • Virgo: Your eyes are anything but gentle; they are fast, steady and they are quick to pick up a detail and analyze it. You love to gain knowledge just about anything. And nevertheless, you strive for perfection. Though all this careful studying and analyzing leads you to great anxiety and non-existent problems that you create in your own head. Cool down, and stop being nervous so much. Not to spoil the ending for you, but everything will be okay.
  • Libra: As a Libra, it is known for being indecisive. Chocolate or vanilla? Even though there is a life - long battle in your head, you seek to peaceful, balanced, and poised relationships around you. You need friends and affection, and that's okay. But please, don't let that war inside you tear you apart. You're stronger than this. Believe me. Okay?
  • Scorpio: Like Libra, you have a similar dilemma in life. Cool and collected on the outside, but torn and broken on the inside. As a person who is very quiet in general, you like to know everything about yourself. Why you do this, why you do that. It's great that you want to learn more about yourself, but sometimes you look into your mistakes way too much. Learn to forgive yourself and others, because if not, happiness will seem like a more distant memory than a feeling.
  • Sagittarius: You are very fun to be around, you love traveling and interested in learning cultures or ideas. You are a risk-taker, a flame in the middle of the forest. But it is very confusing with you, you either rise high to the stars or sink deep into the depths. There is no in between with you, and that's fine, as long as you are okay with it. Even though you love to explore new things, you tend to procrastinate on what you find boring. Expand your ideas, because maybe you might find something that you absolutely love.
  • Capricorn: You're very hard working, practical, reserved, responsible, and extremely ambitious. You make a goal, and you go for it, no matter how big or small the obstacles you have to face. Life is a game for you, and even though you always end up winning, you never let go the mistakes you made in the process. Being self-critical can be or good, so make sure it is always good. But please, do not concentrate on your ambitions too much, loosen up and have fun. Make sure to always talk with friends, maintain your level of happiness high.
  • Aquarius: You are friendly, unusual, rebellious, and intellectual. You love making your own ideas and making them eccentric, different from everybody else. You want to be enveloped in your own ideas and inventions, in your own bubble of glitter and star dust. You crave freedom, space, and individuality all the time, but when you are put into a cage and you can't fly, you get impatient, angry, and anxious. Even though you are a bit detached, you have very good organizing abilities and can always prioritize. All these traits are wonderful to have, but make sure the half of you is not building a wall between you and your emotions. Your friends and family need you, and so do you to them. Less head and more heart.
  • Pisces: Like Aquarius, you like to spend your day in your head and love to daydream. You are tend to dream life than live it, but please don't end up losing yourself. It's a necessity for you to be alone at times, and that's okay. You are very sensitive and compassionate, and sometimes plastic. But you have the qualities that people desire to have, everyone wants to talk to you and vent about their feelings. You must and want to serve others in life, but do not let yourself be taken advantage of.
How to let go of your ex once and for all (even if it feels impossible)

It took me nearly 3 years to get over my ex boyfriend. If you have ever been through a breakup, you know it is one of the hardest most heart-wrenching things to go through.

After weeks of fighting, the day came where there was no other option than to break up. When he left my house that day I felt like he had ripped off a piece of my soul. I had loved this man with all my heart, it was a raw all consuming intense kind of love. I couldn’t grasp the reality of what had happened. My best friend came over and I was just lying there with lykke li’s song possibility on repeat. I had cried for hours and there was no life left in my eyes.

For the first few months after the breakup I was in denial and I went into party mode, but not dealing with the pain slowly started to take its toll. And eventually (also because of some other factors) I fell into a deep black depression that would last for about a year. After the depression it still took me a long time to completely let him go.

It was the hardest and most valuable experience of my life.

So what helped me to let him go?

physics doesn’t have to suck: how to enjoy and do well in your required physics classes

As someone who doesn’t intend to take a physics class ever again, I was relieved when I walked out of my second semester physics final. That said, physics doesn’t have to suck or drag your average down.

(1) How to enjoy physics: Adjust your attitude. Physics is so cool if you actually think about it. Your attitude will dictate your experience. (2) But physics is so hard: Change the way you study and don’t give up. I did better in university physics than in high school. The content was way more difficult but it was my studying methods that made the difference.

This post is split into 3 parts: Introductory physics (very basic physics, that unit of physics you had to do in a lower level science class), high school physics (physics from an algebra-based perspective), and university physics (calculus-based physics and labs). (Obviously these overlap a lot but I needed to organize this somehow)

INFO IS UNDER THE CUT B/C THIS POST IS RIDICULOUSLY LONG

Sansa Stark does not deserve your hatred

In my last year of school we had to write a character analysis and I decided to write about Sansa Stark. My teacher (who was only a couple of years older than me) was a huge asoiaf fan and he got really excited about it, but I remember him frowning and saying in a perplexed voice, “How can Sansa Stark be your favourite character?”

I looked at him with the same confusion mirrored in my own eyes and replied: “Because she is strong.” That was the first time I realised how hated Sansa was and it really infuriated me and so I decided to show him in my essay why she is my favourite character and honestly I think he got it because I did end up getting a good grade.

The analyse focused on book Sansa but this will focus on show Sansa, and it will probably be a bit of a read.

This here is the very moment I began to like Sansa. This is where she looses her innocence and where her character growth begins. This is when she goes from being a child to a young woman. This is where she wants to kill her Prince Charming and she would have if the Hound had not stopped her. This is also a part many viewers seem to overlook, deciding to still view Sansa as a stupid little girl and that is the problem with those who dislike Sansa, they refuse to acknowledge her growth.

People who think Bruce would be team cap are so incredibly ridiculous. Like yes he hates Ross and doesn’t trust him at all so i think he would spend the entire time begging tony to remove him from the equation (which, like, literally might have stopped civil war from starting) but he NEVER would have joined team cap. If not for his giant guilt complex that would relish in accountability then because of Wanda. One of the prime motivators for team cap was that Wanda was on house arrest. People rallied behind Wanda in her defense of what happened in Lagos because a mistake was made. Do you think for a second that Bruce would believe that? Or even care? Bruce hates Wanda. Bruce said that he could kill her with his bare hands “wouldn’t change a shade.” Wanda forced him to Hulk out and attack a city in AoU which is realistically the only case where he would feel anger mostly towards someone else, not himself. Dear sweet Bruce is a scientist, and when he can swing it, a pacifist. But he straight up wanted to kill Wanda because of revenge.

In civil war he would try and stop the fighting. He would try and get rid of Ross, which shouldnt be too hard because one of the major concerns for the accords was that the avengers were too American. But if teams were separated and team cap held the treatment of WANDA up as the rallying cry you can be damn sure Bruce is staying with his science bro. Or he’ll just leave again because like I said- pacifist.

Attention, spoilers below!

You know what’s the greatest thing about Thirteen Reasons Why?
It’s that everyone, every single character, is totally, completely human. They’re all 100% realistic and three dimensional. They’ve all got both virtues and vices, strenghts and weaknesses. They’re all also deeply flawed and damaged.
Obviously they’re not all the same… In fact, everyone has their own very distinct personality (and they always, always act on character).
But what I think the show is trying to say is that nothing is either black or white.
It’s one big fucking gray area and we’re all in it. The people who made small mistakes that ended up in tragic outcomes and the people who knew that what they were doing was wrong and did it anyway.
Because yes, Hannah was an amazing, funny, clever, beautiful girl who did not deserve anything she got. But yes, she also did have a flair for the dramatic.
And yes, Bryce Walker is a rapist and I hope he gets the sentence he deserves and more. But - and here you might not agree with me - Justin also told us he was always generous with him and his other friends.
This obviously is not to say that Hannah being a bit of a drama queen excuses the people who hurt her. And also is obviously not to say that Bryce being there for his mates excuses him for commiting one of the worst crimes possibile.
This is just to say that whoever wrote this show, whoever wrote this characters, knows exactly what they’re doing. Way too often TV and cinema (but also books, comics, video games ect…) tell stories in which people are either entirely good or entirely bad. And, I know, they do it because we like to read and watch stories in which we can identify with the good main characters. And it’s okay.
But it’s also not realistic. Those people are not realistic. In real life people fuck things up. Hopefully not as bad as they did in Thirteen Reasons Why, but still, it happens. People make mistakes and people kill themselves. It’s tragic, but it’s real.
To sum up, what I’m trying to say here is: it’s okay to watch shows in which the characters always choose what is right instead of what is easy. It’s okay to identify with those characters and it’s okay to “use” those shows as an escape from reality.
But sometimes you have to watch shows like Thirteen Reasons Why. Not because they tell you what is going to happen, but because they tell you what COULD happen. Anyone could be the next Hannah and anyone could be the reason why they decide to kill themselves. Shows like this remind us that actions have consequences. So, next time, think before you act and try to fix what you can still fix, before is too late.
Because, before Hannah proved them wrong, everyone on the tapes thought they were the good character.

… Except for Jeff. Jeff was 100% pure.

Also, sorry, I wasn’t planning to turn this into a morality lesson. It just happened.

On Fanfiction Commenting

I have been both a consumer and a producer of fanfiction since I was probably far too young to be doing either, so here are some of my tips on commenting on fics:

  • Comment. Please. Comments motivate authors to write.
  • Incoherently rambling is okay. One word comments are okay. Smiley faces are okay. I guarantee getting a notification that someone commented AAAAAAAH :D on a fic will make a writer smile.
  • Really long comments are awesome. You want to talk about your favorite scene? Go for it. You want to talk about how much you like a character? Please. Explain how well you think this writer fits within canon, or is better than canon, or gave you a new headanon.
  • Talk about how it made you feel.
  • If you read something a second time, or a third time, or a fifth time, tell them. Writers love to hear that. Tell them when you stay up all night to finish a fic. Tell them that you cried. Tell them that you laughed.
  • Be careful with critiques. Some authors are cool with them, some aren’t, but regardless, if you have a critique of the story, be gentle, be kind, compliment them too, remember that they wrote this and provided it to you for free, and consider not sending it directly to them.
  • If you think they got something particularly touchy (sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.) wrong, first check to see if they say they are that thing that you think they got wrong. If they are, don’t say anything. People are allowed to interpret themselves however they want. If they aren’t AND YOU ARE, you can consider gently letting them know, preferably with thanks for attempting representation and maybe a link to a resource that might help them (unless they’re being malicious or have a particularly egregious error, in which case don’t thank them for representing you).
  • If there is one typo or mistake, let them know. if there are five, don’t. Most writers don’t want to go searching through their story to fix every typo they made at 3 am, but one thing is wrong–particularly if they wrote the wrong name–it’s not that much work to fix. They might not fix it, but you’re not putting much of an extra burden on them by letting them know.
  • If you read 50k words of a fic and then comment a dissertation on all the reasons you hated it, maybe consider just…stopping reading it, instead. You didn’t pay for it. You are gaining nothing from the cost of time of reading it. Go away. Also I will tell my friends about how ridiculous you are, and we will laugh about you.
  • Don’t share your life story. 9 times out of 10, we don’t care they you are uncomfortable with the idea of polyamory because your SO cheated on you and you think polyamory is like cheating and you don’t judge anyone else for participating in polyamory but you wouldn’t do it personally, so please, don’t tell us. (Fun fact, that’s a true story.)
  • “I would love to read more (of this story/of this world/of your works)” is fine (unless they explicitly say they won’t write more). “Have you thought about writing more” is also fine. “Hey, it’s been a while, I love your story and hope you post more” is pretty okay. “You need to write more” is a little iffy. “UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE” is kind of aggressive. “Why haven’t you updated, you terrible person” is way out of line.
  • Don’t be mean.

god, i loved getting to hear about Dan’s “week in march,” so fucking much, you can’t even imagine. It’s just like… hearing Dan explain what he went through being off meds for two weeks on accident without the proper monitored reduction by a physician both made me laugh and cringe for him. Like Dan said, it can be a horrible situation for some, life threatening, even, but also like Dan said, having gone the exact same thing as Dan, I can laugh at myself and how my body decided to react when I forgot my anti-depressants.

It was only one day, for me. One day, on accident, early one, when I didn’t know if I should wait until tomorrow to take it if it had already been like 6 hours since I USUALLY did, and oh man… oh man. For me, it was a numbness that rivaled the sensation of depression numbness, followed almost instantly by mania and a thrill seeking need that I have never before experienced in my life. I nearly hit another car because I went driving. I was a mess.

Hearing Dan experience something similar, and sharing that story with us… I was so happy to be able to laugh with him, and understand, and feel that same kind of strange kinship with someone who made a simple mistake with anit-depressants and came out the other end safetly.

I know that for many of you out there, it’s not so funny. It might be terrifying and upsetting that he could laugh it off, or that I could laugh it off, and it might be the worst experience in the world when it happens, and for months after, but I promise that one day, you’ll look back and be able to laugh and cry at the same time, because look. You’re alive. You’re okay. You’re safe, and you understand your body and mind better, and you are still, STILL pushing through, despite how rough it must have been to be accidentally off of the thing that kept you sane.

Thank you Dan, for sharing that story with us. Thank you, for making me feel able to laugh at my own silly mistake as well. Thank you for being open with us.

Hey kids, a  few words of advice on how to handle criticism of the specific type that someone tells you your work is contributing to a systematic oppression of some kind, such as racism.

So you drew a piece of fanart featuring a character who in canon has dark skin, and you drew their skintone much lighter. Maybe by accident and you didn’t notice until after you’d posted it and someone told you.

Well that’s not fun to hear, is it.

This is what you are expected to do:

  • Fix the picture, or delete it if you don’t want to fix it.
  • Acknowledge you messed up and pay more attention to not doing it again.

These are reactions that do not help and are derailing the issue:

  • “Sorry you feel offended.“ This is not acknowledging you made a mistake, you’re implying the only problem is the other person having noticed your mistake, or that they might have even just imagined it.
  • “I didn’t mean to, therefore I can’t have.” You can do hurtful things without meaning to. Insert good old stepping on someone’s foot example.
  • “But I’m not racist.” Nobody asked how good of a person you are or aren’t. You did a thing that’s racist. Show you are that good person you claim to be by owning up to that you did something wrong.
  • “I would fix it if you weren’t so rude/I almost didn’t fix it because you were so rude” This is called tone-policing, and is a classic derailment technique. Being told you have done a thing that hurts people is not about your feelings and comfort. The message is just as true whether the person groveled before you or cursed at you when delivering it. Very often I also see the mere pointing out that a picture is whitewashed being considered “too rude”. Again, this is not about you and your feelings. You are hurting people, quite often the person informing you of that is one of those getting hurt. Think of being informed of that as something to be grateful for, a favor to you (because now that you know, you can stop! assuming you care about not hurting people), not an attack on your personality. It’s not about you.
  • “Artistic freedom!/I don’t owe it to anyone to make art they like” Racism is not a matter of taste, and asking someone to stop contributing to it is not suppressing their creativity.
  • “Sometimes people draw characters with darker skin than they have in canon, why is that okay but not what I did?” People aren’t oppressed in real life for having light skin, and characters with light skin (particularly, white characters) have more media representation in mainstream media, both in quantity and quality. One adds representation to underrepresented people, one takes it away.

You don’t have to throw a tantrum about it. Just. Lift your foot and apologize, and watch where you step in those heavy boots in the future.

8:52pm (Artemis)

Do you ever wonder about souls? Surely we too have them. How corrupt they must be, twisted and torn, riddled in pride and dishonesty. Unsent: We do have them. I feel mine, and how it’s twisted and bent into something unrecognizable

9:00pm (Apollo)

You think too much.

2:37 am (Artemis)

I passed someone today; his eyes looked like the moon in shades of blue. Unsent: It made me think of mistakes, and how mistakes become scars. I’d like one, maybe two cut, across my chest. It might help me separate what is real and what is not

2:43 am (Apollo)

I saw a girl who looked like Cassandra. I wished her dead and that she would remember me all in one breath.

2:45 am (Artemis)

I know. Me too.

4:05 am (Artemis)

Do you still fight the future?

2 seconds later (Apollo)

Every day. Every night. With every breath I have. Unsent: Because it terrifies me. The darkness. The death. We will be all that’s left, and we won’t be able to start over again.

4:06 am (Artemis)

I fight the past. Every expectation I failed to meet. Every decision I ever made in vain. All the vows I gave too easily. Youth. Youth makes gods foolish.

4:07 am (Apollo)

Unsent: I’m sorry. I’m sorry for the part I played

10:59 pm (Artemis)

I wished it would end. I wanted the world to burn and to watch it out of spite. Unsent: Then I wanted to save it, quench the fire with the ocean. I wanted to prove I still could.

11:00 pm (Apollo)

I saw it.

11:01 pm (Apollo)

I had a vision today of a world that didn’t burn in fire. I had a vision of a world where we were happy.

5 seconds later (Artemis)

Do we even deserve it?

2 seconds after that (Apollo)

No. But it was nice. It was nice to have hope.

here's a prompt where instead of neil getting hurt in a game, it's andrew

this turned into fluff????? mark this down on the calendar, guys, because I never turn angst into fluff at least not like this

Neil isn’t on the court when it happens, so he sees every second. It’s not the first time a team got it in their heads that the way to win the game was to sacrifice a striker in order to take down Andrew. But it’s the first time they’ve decided to sacrifice two strikers and a defensive dealer.

Andrew gets the ball out of the goal and then braces for the impact of the striker. If it had ended there, Andrew would have been fine, brick house that he is. But the other striker, in a blatant foul, rams into Andrew as well, and then the fucking defensive dealer piles on as well. Whistles blow and the buzzer goes off, calling the game to a halt as red cards are thrown and the referees make their way onto the field.

Neil is on his feet and running without remembering to tell his body to move. Wymack and the referees try to stop him, but Neil ducks and shoves past them. The other players are already on their feet, but Andrew is still on his back, racquet laying a foot from his extended hand.
