writing an autistic character when you are not autistic - a masterpost

completely double spaced version on google docs here – this post is more blocky for the sake of people’s dashboards, but still long so people will be less likely to glaze over it. my apologies if that makes it hard to read

things to look for and avoid in an autistic character

• symptoms only manifesting as “nonverbal and rocking”
• super smart / living calculator
• super dumb / doesn’t understand anything
• all the symptoms you can come up with for them are “awkward” and “has special interest(s)” (please do more research)
• trains, technology, and/or math as special interests
• acting like a child
• getting treated like a baby
• unreasonably cruel and uncaring about others’ reactions to them being cruel
• if they’re comparable to sheldon from the big bang theory, start over
• animal comparisons
• a lack of feelings
• please no stories about what it’s like to be autistic told by allistics

the right way to write an autistic person

• lots of symptoms, including secondary ones not included on a general diagnosis requirement list (here’s a list i rather like that was made by an autistic person – their blog is also a good resource)
• having a good amount of general knowledge and actually talking about it (i cannot believe that i have to say this)
• talking about things outside of special interests (again…. come on……….) (special interests are usually the default things our brains go to when theres no stimulation or we want to entertain ourselves – it isn’t literally all we think or talk about ever. if a conversation has no connections to a special interest, reconsider having your autistic character bring it up in a context that is not an introduction.)
• explicitly expressed to be capable of attraction and romantic feelings – if your character is an adult, add sexual feelings to this point
• capable of general functioning, just with a disability that makes it more difficult – not a walking disability (….sigh)
• a wide amount of feelings and emotional turmoil (but perhaps only being able to express it in limited ways)
• we’re people
• just people whose brains are wired differently

things to avoid in research for an autistic character

• autism moms / autism blogs and websites not run by autistic people
• any affiliation with autism $peaks means you should walk away and never look back
• a scientist trying to create explanations for what autistic people do without actually asking / not mentioning asking autistic people
• anything about a cure for autism
• a person that “worked with autistic kids” phrased in the same way as “worked with animals”
• talking about autistic people as if they are mysteries, are like animals, or are otherwise othered weirdos instead of people

things to look for in research for an autistic character

• actual autistic people talking about their experiences and symptoms
• just stick to that and you’re good but it’s hard to find sometimes ngl. just look for the above red flags

things i would personally like to see in an autistic character

• less easy to swallow sadness and more destructive anger. i would love to see a canonically autistic character who was frustrated easily by small things and had trouble communicating why
• not a story about being autistic, a story that happens to have a character or characters who are autistic – it isn’t pointed out or questioned, they’re right at home with the rest of the cast and not othered (a la symmetra from overwatch)
• intensive sensory issues / small sounds making large reactions
• clear communications about not liking x sensory thing (for example being touched)
• poor motor skills / clumsiness and not being laughed at for it
• walking funny (body bent downwards, walking very fast, walking slowly, big strides, shuffling, stiffness, etc)  – no one treats it as if it’s funny or something totally strange
• a big personality that has a presence so they can’t be cast aside (but feel free to have quiet characters too) – if this was along with being nonverbal they would probably leap to being one of my favorite characters ever
• a fear of asking for clarification on sarcasm or jokes because of past experiences and an arc about the character becoming more comfortable asking questions

>> if any fellow autistic people want to add something, feel free <<

The Dos and Don’ts of Beginning a Novel:  An Illustrated Guide

I’ve had a lot of asks lately for how to begin a book (or how not to), so here’s a post on my general rules of thumb for story openers and first chapters!

Please note, these are incredibly broad generalizations;  if you think an opener is right for you, and your beta readers like it, there’s a good chance it’s A-OK.  When it comes to writing, one size does not fit all.  (Also note that this is for serious writers who are interested in improving their craft and/or professional publication, so kindly refrain from the obligatory handful of comments saying “umm, screw this, write however you want!!”)

So without further ado, let’s jump into it!

Don’t:

1.  Open with a dream.

“Just when Mary Sue was sure she’d disappear down the gullet of the monstrous, winged pig, she woke up bathed in sweat in her own bedroom.”

What?  So that entire winged pig confrontation took place in a dream and amounts to nothing?  I feel so cheated!

Okay, not too many people open their novels with monstrous swine, but you get the idea:  false openings of any kind tend to make the reader feel as though you’ve wasted their time, and don’t usually jump into more meaty action of the story quickly enough.  It makes your opening feel lethargic and can leave your audience yawning.

Speaking of…

2.  Open with a character waking up.

This feels familiar to most of us, but unless your character is waking up to a zombie attack or an alien invasion, it’s generally a pretty easy recipe to get your story to drag.

No one picks a book to hear how your character brushes their teeth in the morning or what they’d like to have for dinner.  As a general rule of thumb, we read to explore things we wouldn’t otherwise get to experience.  And cussing out the alarm clock is not one of them.

Granted, there are exceptions if your writing is exceptionally engaging, but in most cases it just sets a slow pace that will bore you and your reader to death and probably cause you to lose interest in your book within the first ten pages.

3.  Bombard with exposition.

Literary characters aren’t DeviantArt OCs.  And the best way to convey a character is not, in my experience, to devote the first ten pages to describing their physical appearance, personality, and backstory.  Develop your characters, and make sure their fully fleshed out – my tips on how to do so here – but you don’t need to dump all that on the reader before they have any reason to care about them.  Let the reader get to know the character gradually, learn about them, and fall in love with them as they would a person:  a little bit at a time.

This is iffy when world building is involved, but even then it works best when the delivery feels organic and in tune with the book’s overall tone.  Think the opening of the Hobbit or Good Omens.

4.  Take yourself too seriously.

Your opener (and your novel in general) doesn’t need to be intellectually pretentious, nor is intellectual pretense the hallmark of good literature.  Good literature is, generally speaking, engaging, well-written, and enjoyable.  That’s it.

So don’t concern yourself with creating a poetic masterpiece of an opening line/first chapter.  Just make one that’s – you guessed it – engaging, well-written, and enjoyable.

5.  Be unintentionally hilarious.

Utilizing humor in your opening line is awesome, but check yourself to make sure your readers aren’t laughing for all the wrong reasons (this is another reason why betas are important.)

These examples of the worst opening lines in published literature will show you what I mean – and possibly serve as a pleasant confidence booster as well:

“As the dark and mysterious stranger approached, Angela bit her lip anxiously, hoping with every nerve, cell, and fiber of her being that this would be the one man who would understand – who would take her away from all this – and who would not just squeeze her boob and make a loud honking noise, as all the others had.”

– Ali Kawashima

“She sipped her latte gracefully, unaware of the milk foam droplets building on her mustache, which was not the peachy-fine baby fuzz that Nordic girls might have, but a really dense, dark, hirsute lip-lining row of fur common to southern Mediterranean ladies nearing menopause, and winked at the obviously charmed Spaniard at the next table.”

– Jeanne Villa

“As I gardened, gazing towards the autumnal sky, I longed to run my finger through the trail of mucus left by a single speckled slug – innocuously thrusting past my rhododendrons – and in feeling that warm slime, be swept back to planet Alderon, back into the tentacles of the alien who loved me.”

– Mary E. Patrick

“Before they met, his heart was a frozen block of ice, scarred by the skate blades of broken relationships, then she came along and like a beautiful Zamboni flooded his heart with warmth, scraped away the ugly slushy bits, and dumped them in the empty parking lot of his soul.”

– Howie McClennon

If these can get published, so can you.

Do:

1.  You know that one really interesting scene you’re itching to write?  Start with that.

Momentum is an important thing in storytelling.  If you set a fast, infectious beat, you and your reader will be itching to dance along with it.

Similarly, slow, drowsy openers tend to lead to slow, drowsy stories that will put you both to sleep.

I see a lot of posts joking about “that awkward moment when you sit down to write but don’t know how to get to that one scene you actually wanted to write about.”  Write that scene!  If it’s at all possible, start off with it.  If not, there are still ways you can build your story around the scenes you actually want to write.

Keep in mind:  if you’re bored, your reader will almost certainly be bored as well.  So write what you want to write.  Write what makes you excited.  Don’t hold off until later, when it “really gets good.”  Odds are, the reader will not wait around that long, and you’re way more likely to become disillusioned with your story and quit.  If a scene is dragging, cut it out.  Burn bridges, find a way around.  Live, dammit.

2.  Engage the reader.

There are several ways to go about this.  You can use wit and levity, you can present a question, and you can immerse the reader into the world you’ve created.  Just remember to do so with subtlety, and don’t try too hard;  believe me, it shows.

Here are some of my personal favorite examples of engaging opening lines:

“In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

– Douglas Adams, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

"It was the day my grandmother exploded.”

– Iain Banks, Crow Road.

“A white Pomeranian named Fluffy flew out of the a fifth-floor window in Panna, which was a grand-new building with the painter’s scaffolding still around it. Fluffy screamed.”

– Vikram Chandra, Sacred Games.

See what I’m saying?  They pull you in and do not let go.

3.  Introduce us to a main character (but do it right.)

“Shadow had done three years in prison. He was big enough and looked don’t-fuck-with-me enough that his biggest problem was killing time. So he kept himself in shape, and taught himself coin tricks, and thought a lot about how much he loved his wife.”

– Neil Gaiman, American Gods.

This is one of my favorite literary openings of all time, because right off the bat we know almost everything we need to know about Shadow’s character (i.e. that he’s rugged, pragmatic, and loving.)

Also note that it doesn’t tell us everything about Shadow:  it presents questions that make us want to read more.  How did Shadow get into prison?  When will he get out?  Will he reunite with his wife?  There’s also more details about Shadow slowly sprinkled in throughout the book, about his past, personality, and physical appearance.  This makes him feel more real and rounded as a character, and doesn’t pull the reader out of the story.

Obviously, I’m not saying you should rip off American Gods.  You don’t even need to include a hooker eating a guy with her cooch if you don’t want to.

But this, and other successful openers, will give you just enough information about the main character to get the story started;  rarely any good comes from infodumping, and allowing your reader to get to know your character gradually will make them feel more real.

4.  Learn from the greats.

My list of my favorite opening lines (and why I love them) is right here.

5.  Keep moving.

The toughest part of being a writer is that it’s a rare and glorious occasion when you’re actually satisfied with something you write.  And to add another layer of complication, what you like best probably won’t be what your readers will like best.

If you refuse to keep moving until you have the perfect first chapter, you will never write anything beyond your first chapter.

Set a plan, and stick to it:  having a daily/weekly word or page goal can be extremely helpful, especially when you’re starting out.  Plotting is a lifesaver (some of my favorite posts on how to do so here, here, and here.)

Keep writing, keep moving, and rewrite later.  If you stay in one place for too long, you’ll never keep going.

Best of luck, and happy writing.  <3

i’m proud of you for staying alive. and i’m grateful. i don’t think that gets said enough, but thank you for taking care of yourself. thank you for doing the hard stuff. thank you for making yourself live even when it felt like living was the worse of the options. thank you for fighting. and thank you even if it’s ugly and doesn’t feel good and barely even looks like recovery. relapse happens. i’ve been where you are. people like you pulled me out. thank you for pulling me out. and know that if you need a hand i’m here and so are so many other people who have seen into the night and know what it feels like when it bites. so just. thank you for being alive.

Young Volcanoes

Under normal circumstances, the Potter-Weasley-Malfoy family would avoid the Press like the plague, but with a family that big, it’s simply not possible.

Each of the children has mastered their own- unique- method of dealing with the attention…

Harry: Alright, it’s an 18 yard dash to the front door, it’s packed out there,

Harry: if someone gets separated YOU CIRCLE BACK. No one gets left behind!

Ginny: Remember, don’t tuck your thumbs. It’s all in the elbows, no punches-

Ginny: I’m looking at you James and Lily.

Harry: Don’t make eye contact, they sense weakness. Understand everyone?

Everyone: *nods*

Harry: Send us off Teddy, Victoire. Battle stations everyone!

Ginny: *whistles* Go go go!

Reasons why Tythan is real and better than Septiplier

-They don’t have girlfriends and therefore are single (but not really cause they’re dating each other duh)

-Tyler’s huge pupils around Ethan

-The giant Tyler is gentle af with the blue boy

-Tyler doesn’t hit Ethan as hard with balls or arrows or other shit they use in videos to shoot each other

-If Mark doesn’t sit between Tythan they do a lot of gay stuff and a looot of touching

-They share clothes

-Their height difference is just way too cute for them to not kiss 24/7

-Mark and Sean destroyed Septiplier and always joke about it/make fun of it

-Tythan doesn’t talk about Tythan

(so while Septiplier is dead, Tythan is growing beautifully)

-They live together (also on the same damn continent unlike Septiplier)

-Tyler picks Ethan up and carries him around quite often

-Opposites attract

-They are best friends

-They talk daily while Septiplier doesn’t

-Septiplier always tease us with their fake gay shit while Tythan is gay without trying (heart eyes, sitting close as if there wasn’t a whole couch for them, touching all the time, starring so hard, Tyler makes Ethan food especially while the boy’s live-streaming)

-They are like a married couple already

-They seem really damn gay so they probably are

-Tyler protects Ethan from things he’s allergic to

-Also Tyler fucking implied that he kisses Ethan (or at least gets really damn close to his face/mouth) by saying that he “can eat peanuts now because Ethan isn’t here” on one of Mark’s live streams while eating a snickers

-Tyler never said that he’s straight (I don’t think he ever said anything about his sexuality)

Do you know what Tyler and Ethan ALWAYS are when they’re together?

happy.

A little under five years ago, my high school classroom was crouched behind a table with the lights off. We were rapidly checking twitter and the news, trying to understand what was going on.

Rumors were flying about a kid bringing a gun to Newtown high, and at first, no one was too worried. Until the truth started being reported. Until we found out that, about ten minutes away from our homes, 26 people, most of which were young children, were brutally murdered.

After a few hours of lockdown, we were let out early. There were people crying on the streets. There were more police cars than I had ever seen in our little town. The school bus was filled with whispers and wide eyes as our peers were dropped off. I got home, was embraced by my mother, and started sobbing. While I never felt personally unsafe, it was an insurmountable thing to grasp, that my local community had been devastated by something so atrocious.

That Sunday at church, I had never seen the worship hall so full. Strangers were hugging each other, we were all grasping hands, and there were sobs let out that couldn’t be suppressed. As a fourteen year old who had never experienced a tragedy like this - I often felt numb. I didn’t know how to process it.

I thought about it every single day for the next few years. My friend’s little sister was a third grader at Sandy Hook, and as I became closer to her, my sorrow deepened. Like many of the other survivors, she had nightmares often, she was terrified of loud noises - and she was one of the lucky ones.

Everywhere I went, there was evidence of what happened. Almost every car had a green ribbon on it. Whenever I drove past the firehouse where the parents collected the survivors - I thought about those who desperately searched for their kid through the crowd - only to realize that they were not there. A student teacher at my school took a leave of absence - her mother was one of those who was killed. While I was filled with a deeper love for my community, and the way we came together during this tragedy, I was also filled with so much anger.

Almost five years since Sandy Hook - another mass shooting has occurred. More than twice the amount of people were killed. More communities will be mourning. More families will be devastated. So many more people will never ever be the same. And what has our nation done? What have we done to prevent these tragedies from happening? If you haven’t been a part of a community affected by a mass shooting, I can understand why you might think that guns are not the problem. If you haven’t seen the people you grew up with sobbing with grief, you won’t get it. If you haven’t driven by the newly built elementary school and seen the intense security around it - you won’t get it. If you haven’t seen the 26 candles that everyone lights in their driveways every December, you won’t get it. If you haven’t seen the empty classroom seats of the kids whose siblings didn’t make it - you won’t get it.

Yet there is something we CAN do to help. We can push for gun control. We can resist gun culture. We can fight against terrorism (yes - white terrorism too). I don’t want to get too political here, but please. If you care more about your right to bear arms than the lives of your fellow Americans, then I suggest you reevaluate your priorities.

It can be hard to know what it’s like to experience a mass shooting so close to home. And I’m lucky - while I know of people who were murdered, no one close to me was. My loved ones are safe. The same can’t be said for everyone.

So please - give some long hard thought as to what you can do to help. And work to make change. Thank you.

almost a year ago i moved back “home” to the place i grew up in. last summer i lost everything, or so i thought. i lost my home, i lost love, school, a job i loved, and people who had felt more like family to me than anyone else ever had. i was on my own. i was alone. last year i was at the lowest point in my life and in 33 days it will mark a year since the day i tried to take my own life. i thought i had nothing left. i thought there was nothing left for me. mental illness was literally ruling my life. in this past year i have struggle more than i ever had in my life, but i have learned so much about life and love. i have gained so much self confidence, self love, and appreciation for everything that i am. i have struggled, i have pulled myself up from rock bottom. little did i know that in a years time, i would be on one of the most influential teams of my life, i would have a 3.8 GPA in college and i would be receiving an offer from a school to play soccer with nearly $30k in scholarships. i would start speaking out about mental illness, and how it changed my life. i would travel, adventure, laugh, and love more than i ever had. i would become a completely new version of myself. and i would do it all on my own. i thought i lost everything. but i gained so fucking much in the process. it just goes to show you that had i taken my own life a year ago, i wouldn’t have any of this. life isnt always easy, living with a mental illness is HARD, but it is possible. may is mental health awareness month and i decided this year that i will never stop speaking out about the troubles and triumphs of mental illness. because if you’re not making someone uncomfortable you’re not doing something right. so heres to still being here. heres to everything i thought i would never have. heres to smiling and working to end the stigma around mental illness along the way.

Dragon Boyfriend

Dragon boyfriend got a ton of anon votes! But @jasura requested a dragon love first, so this request goes out to you! I think I can’t possibly keep getting better, but each new monster brings out something special. Keep requests coming guys!

You wake up, groaning as you lift yourself. Your head is throbbing and your vision is blurry for a few moments. The room comes into focus and you stare out across a cavern filled with gold and jewels and treasures beyond measure. Your breath catches in your throat and you remember what happened before you fell unconscious.

A dragon had attacked the castle, you were charged with protecting the princess and making sure she made it to the catacombs of the castle. But in her typical fashion, the princess refused and insisted she stay in her room with all her finery. She screamed and kicked, punching you several times when you told her that her chambers were not safe. She told you the catacombs were filthy and unfit for her, but you were more than welcome to go into the catacombs and stay, considering you were just a walking corpse to her anyways.

She made it to her room, locking you out and yelling insults at you until the ceiling caved in. After that you’re unsure what happened, you don’t know the fate of the castle or the princess but part of you is certain she was crushed to death. Then again, you were almost certain you were crushed as well. Instead, you find yourself placed in the center of the dragon’s hoard.

To be young

Title: To be young

Pairing: Reader x Peter Parker

Summary: Y/N has lived next to Peter since the 3rd grade and since has fallen hard for him, but Y/N doesn’t know he’s fallen just as hard.

Word count: 2,145

Songs: Midnight City by M83, Uh huh by Julia Michaels

A/N: This is my first Imagine ever so I’m sorry for the grammar mistakes and if i messed up the point of view a little bit, I’m practicing and heres my first go at it! I hope you guys enjoy it! Also its not a concrete idea yet but i might make more parts to this

“Hey, MJ does Peter ever talk about me?” you ask staring across the lunch room at the boy you’ve had a crush on ever since you laid eyes on him in the 3rd grade. You hear Michelle sigh and close her book “Y/N just go over there and talk to him.” your eyes widen at your best friend for suggesting such a thing. “I can’t just go over there and talk to him without cause, plus..” you sigh sinking further into your seat at the lunch table “he likes Liz, remember?” Just before Michelle can get a word in about your lack of confidence towards guys, the bell rings signaling the end of lunch and beginning of the five minuet passing period to the next class.

You quickly gather your things heading out of the lunchroom and to your next class, gym.

“Hey, Y/N wait up!” you hear the familiar voice of Liz speak as everyone makes their way out of the locker rooms and into the main gym. You falter in your walk just a little hearing Liz say your name, you haven’t ever really been friends or even acquaintances with her since knowing that Peter has a crush on the girl. “Yes?” you smile as she slows her pace next to you “I’m having a party tomorrow night at my place, do you wanna come?” your mind goes blank for a minuet, Liz is asking me to her party? what? “I already asked Michelle if she could come and she said you were free so i thought i’d ask.” Liz practically read your mind, so Michelle is to blame, she’s gonna pay. “Yea, sure I’ll come, it sounds fun.” She smiles before she runs off ahead of you. “Hey Flash,” You hear her shout before she vanishes into the crowd of teenagers.

“Alright, well i think he’s a war criminal now but these are state required so lets get to work .” The gym teacher spoke after the video of Captain America ended waving his hand for everyone to get down from the bleachers and take their places on the mats.

You finally spot Michelle in the crowd of teenagers and grabbed ahold of her arm before she could lay on a mat. “Hey could we be partners?” You ask letting go of your bestie laying on the mat, “Mind if we take this mat next to you guys?” A voice that made your heartstrings tingle spoke, you quickly turn your head to see Peter laying down and getting ready to go his first sit-up. “No-not at all.” you blush and turn on your other side to come face to face with a book “Michelle” You groan louder than intended, “We’re suppose to be doing sit-ups.” You grab the book tilting it away from her face, Michelle sighs and turns on her back pushing her book up and down from her face “There happy, I’m exercising now.” She mumbled making you laugh slightly.

“Hey what about Spider-Man?” You sit up and whip your head around to the bleachers where a certain group of popular girls were sitting, “What about him Liz? You got a crush?” a friend of hers teased, “Well I mean yes he’s pretty hot but he’s also a hero you can’t leave him out.” You could see a slight pink shade her cheeks after she spoke.

“Hey, uh Peter knows Spider-Man!” Ned practically yelled from the mat next to you, what? how does Peter know Spider-Man? I mean maybe he got saved by him? But what? You were pulled from your thoughts when Peter spoke, “Well Uh  we-wel yes i do, because of the Stark internship i have but i’m not suppose to talk about it.” Peter spoke through gritted teeth when he ended his sentence. “Wait Penis Parker knows Spider-Man? And has a Stark internship? Wow this is too good, what other lies ya got?” Flash finally joined the conversation. You sighed and turned your attention back to laying down and staring at the ceiling till the end of the period.

“Well if you know him so well why don’t you invite him to Liz’s party tomorrow night?” Flash asked sarcasm clear in his voice, “Wait-wait Liz is having a party?” You perked up again at the sound of Peter’s slightly hurt voice. “Yeah, tomorrow night, my parents are out of town, you and Ned are more than welcome to come and you don’t gotta bring Spider-Man.” You could practically hear the smile in Peters voice when he replied “No-No yeah I’d love to come.” You rolled your eyes and tried to drown out the rest of the conversation.

“Okay, see ya tomorrow.” Liz spoke before the bell rang, finally. You make your way back to the locker room and change out of the gym uniform and into your regular clothes.

Well tomorrow night should be interesting, I wonder if Peter really knows Spider-Man you smile at the thought, that’d be fucking awesome.

Michelle and you took the bus together after school planning on having a sleepover and carpooling to Liz’s party the next day. “I can’t believe you already said i would go without asking me.” you lightly punch Michelle on the arm while getting ready for bed. “Hey what better things do you have going on tomorrow, staring at peter though the peep hole of your apartment again?” Michelle teased, you gasped and placed your hand on your heart pretending to be hurt by the comment. “Michelle that is an important activity and I cannot miss it.” You dramatically said and plopped down onto your bed for the night, the couch. Michelle and you always sleep on her couch for sleepovers, its big enough and comfy as hell.

“Oh whatever Y/N.” she groaned taking her place on the couch and turning on the tv. Within minuets your eyes start to get heavy, you finally give into the sleep tugging at you and fall asleep.

“Thanks for the ride!” you shout at Michelle’s dad before Michelle slams the car door shut. MJ and you start towards the front door already hearing the loud music coming from inside. “Michelle are you sure about this?” You ask grabbing her arm forcing her to stop and look at you “Look Y/N, when are you ever gonna do something like this ever again. Plus, its all apart of the high school experience.” She shrugged making her way to the front door and inside with you trailing behind her.

You were immediately greeted by Liz and shown the way to the kitchen “incase you need something to drink” Liz told you leaving you and focused her attention back onto the party. “Ok so now I Just wait for something to happen?” you spoke to yourself as you grabbed a red solo cup and filled it with water from the fridge. You made your way out of the kitchen and to the couch in the living room, where did MJ go? I’m like the only other person besides Liz she knows here so where - your thoughts were interrupted when your eyes met with the chocolatey eyes of the boy you’ve been waiting for all night.

You smile towards Peter earning a grin back from him before his attention was sent somewhere else, probably Flash shouting “wheres your friend Spider-man? I don’t see him..” You rolled your eyes and made your way over to the duo standing in the middle of the hallway, “Hey hey guys,” you nervously spoke “Finally made it.” you smiled over at Ned, his attention on the rest of the party and not you. “Yeah we got-” Peter got interrupted by a shout from the family room “If you wanna play a game come to the family room now!” you felt a hand wrap around your arm before you could protest you were in the family room seated next to Liz, Peter diagonally across from you with ned next to him and Michelle on your other side.

“Alright,” you heard Liz speak next to you “what game should we play.” a couple of hands flew up in the air and some people shouted suggestions. “How about Seven Minuets In Heaven?!” one voice shouted louder than the others, you looked over at Liz to see she was already ginning with a bottle being handed to her. “Seven Minuets In Heaven it is.” She quickly snapped her head over at you “Y/N, you spin first.” she shoved the bottle into your hand.

“No-no I’m really fine-” you didnt get to finish when you felt a sharp pain in your side from Michelle, your head spun to her side giving her a “what the hell!” look and receiving a shrug in response. You sucked in a breath, all apart of the high school experience right? you tried to reason with yourself. You put the bottle on its side on the ground and spun it, your heat begins beating faster and faster as it comes to a slow down. The bottle finally comes to a stop and your eyes rake up to where it landed, Peter Parker.

You gulped waiting for his reaction as people around him whopped for him but he just sat there eyes wide. “come one you too!” Liz sounded so gleeful and lightly shoved my shoulder for me to get up. Peter must’ve took that as a hint as well and stood up “Wher-uh What closet should we go to?” Peter asked clearing his voice. “the one right at the top of the stairs, we’ll make sure no one goes in.” Liz smiled at Peter and you while you made your way up the stairs. Oh god, what am i going to do, what if he doesn’t want to do anything with me? what if he kisses me and I’m not a good kisser or my breathe stinks- you were ripped out of your thoughts as the closet door was closed and Peter and you were left in the dark.

“uh we-we don’t have to do anything.” you whispered barely audible as you watched Peter set a timer on his phone for seven minuets. “Wh-why don’t we ask each other questions?” Peter asked making a blush creep onto your face, thank god this closet is dark and peters phone light is horrible. “sure-e” you nervously stutter, “you first.” you poke his chest earning a small laugh from him. “Okay, is it true that you have a 4.0 grade average?” You couldn’t help the laugh that  escaped your lips, “What?” Peter asked you could hear the confusion in his voice, “thats the question you wanna ask?” you placed your hand on Peters arm, what am I doing? I’m movign way too fast, “Is that bad?” Peter moved closer to you making you back up into the wall of the closet, your smile fading and a deeper bush replacing it. “uh-no no, I’d just rather not answer it.” You spoke truthfully, “alright,” you could see the smile form on peters face as he inched closer to you.

“your turn.” he whispered making your breath hitch in your throat, he’s so close, if i just move forward slightly i’d finally have my first kiss and with the guy of my dreams, you thought. “you got a question yet?” Peters smile started fading looking into your eyes, “uh- yes, did you really make your own computer?” your eyes scanned peters, he’s so close you can see his beautiful brown ombre iris’s, dark brown to a slightly lighter brown. Your breath hitched in your throat again as Peter flashed his eyes down to your lips for a split second. You start to lean into him, closer and closer to his face when your lips just barely graze each other and then Peters phone goes off.

He jumped back slightly from the sudden noise and looked down at his phone, “Has it already been seven minuets?” You laugh slightly feeling embarrassed for getting so intimate with Peter. “No..” he paused looking up from his phone and into your eyes “But i gotta, I’m really sorry Y/N, I gotta go.” He shook his head slightly before opening the closet and leaving you behind. you stood there shocked, not able to move. Peter and I almost kissed was all you could think as a deep blush crept back onto your face.

You exited the closet and went to see if you could find him at the party anywhere. you got a few weird looks after asking some people if they saw him anywhere but no one could help, not even Ned knew where Peter went.

“Well it’s too bad, we didn’t even get to see his ‘friend’ Spider-Man.” Flash spoke sarcastically to you, you just turned around to go look for MJ and tell her about what had happened, how you almost kissed your life long crush and how he almost kissed you back.

Just imagine jeep sex w shawn like 😩

MASTERLIST

Look what you made me do…

You were singing along loudly to the radio, swaying your head and looking out the window on the street passing you by. You had graciously been allowed to drive Shawn’s jeep to the airport to pick him up, but the moment the two of you had gotten anywhere near the car, Shawn’s love for his precious jeep took over and once again you were banned to the passenger seat.

You didn’t mind much, to be fair. The only advantage Shawn had by always being the one driving, was that he got to pick the music, but you could live that.

At least this time, he wasn’t blasting his out voice out of the stereo just to annoy you. This time Ed Sheeran’s voice consumed the car.

You tilted your head to the left, catching Shawn’s gaze sticking at you. He smiled widely when he caught your gaze as well.

“Eyes on the road, Mendes!” You hissed at him, but it just made him laugh.

That little crocket smile, you loved so deeply, painted itself on his lips and he was giving you a teasing glance. Aww, your little baby was a bit needy. You grabbed around his chin with your thumb, pushing his face towards the road.

“I said, eyes on the road” You spoke once again, raising your eyebrow at him. Shawn leaned a little further towards you, licking his soft lips slowly.

“I like this view better” he rasped. His voice sounded sore, but the darkness made it even sexier than usually.

“I’m serious… You can drive and snapchat and risk your life on your own, but when I’m in the car? Hell no! Eyes on the road, Mendes” You teased him, letting your thumb caress his chin as you once again pushed his head to the side, forcing him to look out on the road ahead of you.

You watched as Shawn’s smug grew, but he decided to keep his eyes on the road this time. Playfully though, his mouth grabbed your thumb and he bit you harshly.

“Hey!” whined at him, but you only made it worse.

A massive smirk appeared on Shawn’s face and you were certain his eyes were shining.

“Trust me, babe. I can do a lot more than just biting you” Shawn rasped.

He shortly let his eyes fall on you, but then he looked back at the road. You felt the heat rush to your face as you twisted in the leather seat by his words.

“Like what?” you dared him, feeling your cheeks blush massively.

Why did this even make you shy? It wasn’t like Shawn had never talked dirty to you before. Actually, late night calls with Shawn usually consisted of dirty talk.

Shawn turned left on the road and continued driving back home, but he couldn’t help but let out a heavy breath.

“Oh darling, I’ve been gone for so long this time, you can’t even imagine what I’m going to do to you”

“Tell me” you whispered with the heat rushing around your body, leaving your skin tickly.

“Just as eager as me, huh?” Shawn laughed, once again looking at you shortly.

“Aww, and you’re blushing as well” he teased you. You rolled your eyes at him, pushing his face back towards the road.

“Someone needs to teach you how to drive properly” you mocked back.

“Have we ever been in an accident or even close to it?”

“Well no…”

“Then stop complaining about my driving” He yelled.

He wasn’t mad, he was just joking with you. You leaned across your seat and closer to Shawn, almost letting your lips brush against his ear gently, taking a deep breath.

“I’m just keeping you safe, baby. That’s all” you whispered playfully.

You felt every fibre in Shawn’s body tighten and his muscles sudden tense feeling. Oh yeah, you were driving him crazy right now. Shawn’s grip around the steering wheel strengthen and his hands were rubbing it harshly.

“I wish you’d rub me like that” You whispered into his ear once again. You were messing with his mind and you fucking loved it.

You watched as the chills spread across Shawn’s body and how his mouth was suddenly gaping wiped open as he forced in air. Shawn swallowed heavily, letting his gaze catch you from the corner of his eyes.

You bit your lip the moment he turned to look at you, before licking them slowly. Shawn’s eyes were wide open and had a darken tone to them.

“It’s not fair. Stop it” he whispered back at you.

“Stop what?” you asked, innocently.

Quickly, Shawn leaned in and placed a damp kiss on your lips, before pulled back and was focusing on the road again.

“You know what, the teasing”

“Shawn-“ you said defensively, covering your mouth with you hand. “I would never”

“Liar” he laughed back at you.

“We’re home soon” you said, but it was more like a promise.

You let your hand disappear into Shawn’s hair, rubbing his head gently. Suddenly, Shawn made a harsh turn. A turn he wasn’t supposed to take, if he wanted to end up at home.

“Well, soon isn’t fast enough” he breathed heavily.

“What are you doing?” you laughed, looking at him confused.

Shawn made another turn and suddenly he pulled the car up in a empty parking lot near a small supermarket. Before you could react, Shawn had grabbed roughly around your neck and pulled you into his welcoming lips.

His move forced all the air out of your lungs. His tongue spread your lips and slit into your mouth. Only half a second later, you tasted that mix of mint and sweet mango only Shawn tasted like.

Shawn unbuckled your seatbelt quickly, before pulling you across the car and over to sit on his lap. You immediately felt the big bugle between Shawn’s legs, pressing hardly against you.

Shawn grabbed your ass roughly, almost making you moan against his wet lips. You pulled out of the kiss, staring surprisingly at him.

“Shawn, here? We might get caught” you gasped, completely out of breath.

“I swear to you, I don’t fucking care. I’m so hard for you, right now” Shawn’s voice sounded so desperate in this moment.

You let your eyes stick at him for a bit. The heat had rushed to his face, making his cheeks red and his entire face damp. His lips were trembling and he was… well, very hard.

Shawn needed this; right here, right now, in the car. Your mother always told you that those teenage years was made for living a little dangerously, so you figured that maybe she was right.

Shawn looked at you, wanting impatiently for a reaction, actually more like begging for one. It was like his eyes screamed please touch me.

You licked your lip, unbuckling his seatbelt as well. A broad smug spread on his face, but you just rolled your eyes at him. When you thought about it, Shawn had mentioned car sex several times before.

Only seconds after, Shawn’s hands were now greedily placed on your body again, exploring all the places he’d missed for so long. You rubbed yourself against Shawn, feeling his length grow even bigger and even harder through his black jeans.

Shawn’s hand grab around your ponytail, pulling it back roughly so his tongue was able to lick along your bare neck.

You struggled to unbutton his pants for a bit, but to your defence, Shawn’s hands caressing all the right places on your body, made it very hard to function properly. You finally managed to undo them and pulled down his pants a little. It was impossible to take his clothes off in the car, so it would have to do.

Shawn pushed up your dress and gripped around the hem of your panties. Slowly, his fingers ran down your thighs, leaving goose bumps all over your skin. When the panties made it down to your ankles, Shawn grabbed around your hips, helping you to push yourself down his massive length.

You had to support your balance by placing a hand on the roof of the jeep, while feeling Shawn glide even further into you.

Whenever Shawn and you hadn’t had sex in a while, he always seemed much thicker than you really remembered him.

You pushed Shawn further down his car seat as you started riding him roughly. Quiet moans escaped Shawn’s trembling lips and he threw his head back in pure please.

“Fuck” he breathed, once again grabbing around your hips.

His big and strong hands pushed you to move even faster and even harder down against him. Biting your lip, you were able to strangle the otherwise loud whimpers that would have slipped out of your mouth.

You back felt a pain from the steering wheel brushing against your skin, but the pleasure from feeling Shawn so deep inside you covered it up.

Shawn’s thumb ran across your quivering lips and you grabbed for it and started sucking it hard. Your gaze caught Shawn and you couldn’t help but let out a small smile. The pleasure was rushing in over him, leaving him completely consumed by your bodies greedily meeting each other’s.

His dark, curly hair had become all sweaty and sticky and he was struggling to regain control over his breath. His big hands ran down your back, before his nails were digging into your bare thighs, leaving red marks afterwards.

Your mouth found his damp neck and your tongue left a trail from the skin on his neck, to his soft lips. Shawn pushed his lower body up to meet your thrust, which made you bite his lip harshly from the bliss consuming you.

“Holy fuck” Shawn moaned against your skin.

You couldn’t get any words out of your lips, but your screaming certainly assured him you felt the same way. Shawn’s thumb pushed up your chin so he could look at you.

“Kiss me while I cum” he begged, sending you a tiny smile.

Your hands disappeared into his sticky hair and you closed the gap between your craving lips. You rode Shawn harder and he pushed himself up to meet your welcoming and wet body and he thrusted himself further into you, than he had ever been before.

You both reached your breaking point and it collided in a massive scream from the both of you as Shawn exploded inside of you.

Still sitting on Shawn’s lap, you collapsed into his chest. Shawn’s heart was pounding and his chest was burning warm. He lovingly kissed the top of your head, as you rested it against his collarbone. Shawn’s hands wrapped around you and he hugged you tightly.

You were both trying to regain some sort of strength, but this sex had been too good to recover from in the matter of seconds.

“We so need to have car sex more often” Shawn laughed, once again kissing the top of your hair.

You looked up and met his wide childish smile, rolling your eyes at him. He leaned down and kissed your nose tip gently.

“Yeah, we definitely do” you laughed back, cuddling yourself further into Shawn’s chest.

“Another reason to just love this jeep” he said, smiling widely.

can i get uuuuuh... stay frosty royal milk tea??

Yes, @nicthenerd. Yes you can.

(Also @wams don’t delete your blog. I got you.)

Starbucks won’t make it for you (and neither can I because I don’t live near you) but here’s a recipe so you can make it yourself:

Ingredients:

4 bags Darjeeling tea (or any black tea, really. Darjeeling has a slightly unusual flavor when it’s iced, so just be aware of that. I think it goes well with the mint, though.)
2 cups water
2 cups milk (2%, soy, tigernut, whatever. it’s your latte)
4 tsp sugar (raw/turbinado is best but white/granulated is a-okay too!)
½ tsp vanilla
½ tsp mint extract (for that ~festive frosty factor~)
10 drops blue food coloring
7 drops red food coloring (not exact. colors are hard. do your best.)

*Makes 1, 2 or 3 servings, depending on how much you like sugary drinks and how many of your friends are Fall Out Boy fan.

Directions (traditional):

If you have a stove and a tea strainer, you can do it the actual “milk tea” way, by brewing the tea in the milk on a pan on the stove.

1. Bring 2 cups water to a boil in a pan on the stove. Add the tea (loose-leaf and out of the bag brews better), reduce the heat, and simmer for 2 minutes.

2. Then add the 2 cups of milk, and let it come up to a simmer again. Strain through a tea strainer into a heat-proof container and add sugar, vanilla, mint extract and food coloring until combined.

3. Chill. The tea, I mean. But you can chill too. M A  N  I   A isn’t until January. You’ll have plenty of time to freak out later.

4. (Optional:) Now put that mad creation in a Starbucks cup to confuse people. Take a picture. Post it on twitter. Tag Pete.

Directions (the make-do version):

Life doesn’t always work out perfectly, and that’s okay. You can still join in the fun. Here’s what to do if you have no tea strainer or full kitchen (dorm life):

1. Boil 2 cups of water and brew the tea bags in a large mug or pyrex measuring cup for 3 minutes. Remove tea bags so it doesn’t get bitter af.

2. Add the sugar, vanilla, mint extract, and food coloring and stir to combine.

3. Chill for a few hours. Seriously. It’s okay. Things will turn out alright, and you’ll be able to handle things better if you’re more relaxed. …wait, where was I? Oh, right:

4: Add the milk.

5: Stay frosty.

16 things I learned while being 16
1. You are a lot stronger than you think you are.
2. Breathe. No matter how bad you feel right now, no day lasts longer than 24 hours.
3. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
4. Boys aren’t as scary as you think they are.
5. Going to the movies or shopping alone is not something you have to avoid at all costs but rather a great thing to do during your me time.
6. Plan your next steps ahead especially your near future whether it’s looking at unis, apply for internships, book flights etc.
7. Take your time. If you feel like you pushed yourself too far into a relationship for example it’s okay to admit to yourself that you weren’t ready. There are plenty of options later in life.
8. People don’t care about your pimples or your unwashed hair. Sometimes we tend to think that everyone’s thoughts are about us, which is luckily not the case.
9. Become the person you are instead of trying to change yourself for the sake of family members or friends.
10. Having a diary or occasionally writing letters to your future self can reduce your stress level and who doesn’t like reading letters from your past self?
11. Relationships aren’t a necessity. If you never dated, kissed, or were in a relationship with someone, that’s okay. It doesn’t make you less valuable or weird trust me.
12. Tell your loved ones how much you appreciate their existence, they won’t be here forever.
13. Grades aren’t everything. Yes they pretty much determine your future but one failed test won’t destroy everything you worked so hard for.
14. Artsy stuff is amazing. Read books which inspire you or take pictures of the things you love just to put them on your walls afterwords.
15. You can do everything as long as you are passionate about it and willing to work hard.
16. Live. You have your entire life in front of you and the world offers you endless possibilities.

Its been about a week since Liz’s party happened and during that time Peter had completely started ignoring you, every time you sat by Peter he would get up and leave. In gym Ned and him started doing their stretches on the furthest part of the gym from you.

You were hurt. More then hurt actually, you felt broken. The guy of your dreams almost kissed you and now you could feel he regretted it, a lot. Hell he could barley even stand looking at you. Michelle finally spoke kicking you out of your horrid thoughts “Hey Y/N how ya holding up?” You felt her hand slowly rub your back in an attempt to comfort you. “Well MJ not very well, I’ve liked peter ever since he moved into that stupid apartment and when i finally got the chance to kiss him, he left me..” you paused looking up from the library table you’ve recently started coming to to seek comfort in being alone, “and he regrets it, he regrets trying to kiss me and won’t even do as much as give me the time of day.” Michelle’s hand dropped from your back and found their way onto your face and turned you to look at her. “Listen Y/N, maybe Peter has an explanation for all this.” She looked deep into your eyes feeling the sadness radiate off of you.

“Just maybe try talking to him?” she suggested pulling her hand away from your face. You sighed, she’s right i need to just woman up and talk to him instead of treating him like he is me. I need to be the mature one in this situation. You grabbed your books off of the table and made your way out of the library and towards Peters locker, Its almost the end of 6th period, the last period of the day.

The bell rang right as you made it to Peters locker and waited silently to confront the boy who made you feel broken, but he never came.

“Uh hey Ned?” you asked when you passed by him on your way to debate club, tired of waiting. Ned shut his locker and mad his way over to you with a smile on his face “Yeah whats up Y/N?” you felt a sick feeling over come you before asking whats on your mind, “Have yo-you seen Pete-Peter anywhere?” You stuttered out your question, averting your eyes from Ned’s suddenly feeling a gross kind of embarrassed over run your feeling of sickness. “No, actually i haven’t seen him since gym.” Ned replied as you two began to walk the same way towards the debate club. “Maybe he’ll be at the debate meeting today.” Ned said with a happy glint in his eyes, “How come you’re looking for him?” your heart drops into your stomach trying to think of something to say other than the truth, “We uh-we’re doing a project in chemistry together and i haven’t been able to get ahold of him.” You lie with a sick smile on your face, the lie seeming to convince Ned as you two walked through the doors of the gym to your now daily debate club meeting.

“Hey you two, hurry up and take your seats.” Liz spoke gleefully with a smile on her face before going back to asking questions to the 4 people sitting at tables on the small school stage for nationals that happen in 2 days.

You were getting settled into your seat next to MJ at the front table when you heard the door open to the small theater room open. You looked up from pulling your binder out of your backpack when you caught eyes with the beautiful chocolate ones that were so intimate with you just a week ago.

His gaze averted from yours making you feel guilty for even meeting his eyes in the first place. “Mr. Harrington, I need you to let me go to nationals.” Peter rushed his sentence out. You let out a small laugh you were trying to keep in. Peters head snapped over in your direction and the smile on your face grew wider and your laugh grew louder at his unexpected look. Not even 2 days have passed since Peter said he wasn’t going to nationals and now he wants to? “Well i don’t know whats up with Y/N but you can’t just show up at the last meeting before nationals and expect to be put back on the team” Flash spits confidently at Peter “Well actually Mr. Parker..” Mr. Harrington shot Flash the “shut up” look with his eyebrows raised “Yes you can, Flash can you grab Peters jacket out of my office desk please.” Mr. Harrington flashed a smile at Flash.

“Peters coming to nationals now?” Michelle lowly whispered just barely audible for you to hear, “this should be interesting.” She smiled down at her notebook as she began drawing god knows what.

“Alright everyone needs to behave and no sneaking out after the curfew I’ve set, ten o'clock.” Mr. Harrington lectured you and the group of 10 teenagers. Liz, Michelle and you grab your key cards from the front desk and make your way up to your shared room with them. After getting settled in you decided to relax and watch some tv.

“Hey..” your attention got jerked away from the tv when it turned off suddenly “how about we go to the pool?” You looked over to see Liz gleefully smiling at you and Michelle with her bathing suit on. “Now?” you asked getting up off the bed you were sitting on “it’s 10:30 and isn’t the pool closed?” Liz slipped on her flip-flops “No it doesn’t close till 11:30 and Mr. Harrington does have to know, Plus being rebellious is good for moral…” she paused looking between Michelle and you “so hurry up and get your bathing suits on while I go tell the others.” you quickly agree with her and grab your suit out of your draw of the dresser.

“Michelle, you gonna come?” you ask from the bathroom while putting on your swimsuit on “No, I’m good here with the tv.” she replied as she plopped back down on the bed. You shoved your dirty clothes into your suitcase “Well you’ll just miss out on all the fun!” you called out leaving the room and making your way to the pool.

the pool is on the same floor as your shared room so all you have to do is walk down a few hallways, you make a round around the 2nd to last corner when you collide with something, or someone.

You fall back on your butt letting out a few mumbles of cuss words, “Oh god I’m so sorry, that was my-” The person stops when your eyes meet the familiar chocolate ombré orbs, this moment feeling more intimate than intended, you break your eyes away staring at the floor and taking peters now stretched out hand to help you up.

“Ok so-” a voice interrupts the moment you and Peter were having, “oh hey guys!” The smile of Liz comes into your view, “Hey Liz.” Peter coughs and you see a pink shade take over his face, you lowly scoff and roll eyes taking your hand slowly from Peters. “Are you coming to the pool too Peter?” Liz asks as everyone passes by the three of you “I wasn’t planning on it.” He laughs slightly catching your eyes only to look back to Liz just as you were about to say something you might’ve regretted Liz spoke, “Well you should, so hurry up and get your trunks on!” She whisper shouted the last part of her comment and the same pink shade that took over peters face took over hers.

You felt uncomfortable, like you were intruding on a private moment. “Please, its gonna be like a good luck charm for us!” She spoke as she walked away towards everyone else. Peter turned his attention back to you “You’re going swimming i’m guessing?” He scratched the back of his neck, looking everywhere but your eyes “well you heard Liz, it’s gonna be our good luck charm.” You sarcastically spoke trying to meet Peters eyes with your Y/E/C ones just once.

“Look could we talk about what happened last-” Peters eyes finally caught yours taking you off guard and causing you to choke on your words, the feeling of be unwanted right here in this moment overran your body making you slouch slightly “Look Y/N…” he paused as his phone buzzed in his pocket “I really have to go, could we talk later?” He sighed running his hands through his soft, fluffy brown hair. “Uh sure.” You whispered breaking eye contact with Peter and looking at the floor, Peter sighed once more before walking away “just- just please don’t forget!” You called to him as he turned the corner and out of your sight.

You started making your way to the pool again thinking about what just happened, did Peter even really want to talk? He hasn’t wanted to talk to me at all this past week so maybe he really did regret what could have happened that night. You reached the door to the pool and slid your keycard through the small slot and the door clicked open. You slapped your card down on one of the small tables “there you are!” Flash shouted from in the pool, “I was starting to think you ditched us for penis.” He laughed making your mood even worse than it already was. “Whatever Flash.” You slipped into the pool and just floated on your back looking up at the ceiling with a couple of windows at the top, just admiring the stars and wishing how you could just be one right now instead of having to deal with all of this .. drama? no that’s not the right word for it, but I’m not sure what is maybe- your thoughts get cut off when your eyes meet the ones you saw in the hallway not even 5 minutes ago.

“Peter?” You whisper so quiet no one else hears you, you see Peters eyes widen and then he disappears. You stop and stand on your feet in the small hotel pool still staring up at the window. What is he doing on the roof? Why was he staring at me?

You get out of the pool and grab a designated towel from a small rack in the corner of the room and sit down at a lawn chair.

What is going on?

Those posts that are like “IF YOU ARE GOING YO KILL YOURSELF, THIS IS A SIGN NOT TO. REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE” are so performative and probably super useless.

I can guarantee that 98% of suicidal people will read those posts, and their brains will add “except me” to the end of it.

Or they’ll read it and it’ll mean nothing to them because they don’t know you.

Only a tiny percentage of actually suicidal people will give a fuck about those posts.

Also adding “reblog to save a life” on your own post is TACKY AF.

If you really want to save a life, here are some tips:

- if your friend is going through a hard time, talk to them and help them seek help

- if your friend has been going through a hard time and is suddenly much more cheerful, this might be a sign they’ve decided to end their life, so talk to them

- if someone you know has a mental illness, ask them what you can do to make their lives easier, and do it (or help them find a way)

- be open about feelings so people won’t feel the need to hide their pain from you

- if your friend self harms, help them prevent it, and tell one of their family members (if that’s appropriate in that situation)

- if someone tells you they’re suicidal or going to commit suicide, don’t think they’re just being dramatic, get them help ASAP

- it’s better to over-react than under-react

- tell teachers, etc., if that’s an option

- don’t tell people in positions of authority who are untrustworthy/abusive

- if a family member has demonstrated suicidal tendencies and has medication, see if you can administer it to them instead of trusting them with the whole bottle

- alternatively, see if there’s a way for them to have to pick up their medication every couple of days from the pharmacy

- before they’re in a crisis situation, sit down with them and make sure they have a crisis plan

These are just some, but there are millions of other things you can do for suicidal people that are a million times more effective than reblogging some post.

Helping mentally ill people means HELPING, not just shallow social media crap.

If you're still looking for prompts: physically disabled Jack playing sled hockey. Bonus points for trying to teach Bob. Thanks!

“Stop making fun of your father and get over here,” Alicia yells, slapping her sticks against the ice. “When he finally figures it out you’re doomed, might as well score now!”

But Jack doesn’t move because he’s laughing so hard he’s actually crying. “How are you a living legend? You can’t even balance on a sledge!”

Bob pushes himself upright and nearly falls over on his other hip. Under normal circumstances, he’d be embarrassed, so clearly struggling before an entire wedding party's worth of current and former NHLers, but this is a unique circumstance. He’ll happily play the part of the fool, today, or forever, really, if it means he can see Jack smile like this on a regular basis.

“We – ” Jack gasps for breath, shaking so hard he might topple himself, “– we can’t play if Papa can’t skate.”

Alicia streaks past, still radiant in her makeup from the morning’s ceremony. “Bobby, even I’m better at this than you. How is that possible?”

“You are ruthless,” Bob breathes, watching his wife circle him, “and you’re on my team! Is anyone else seeing this? Eric! Have some compassion and come help your father-in-law!”

Bitty, who up to this point has been taking easy laps with his parents, breaks away only to be quickly intercepted by Jack.

“Oh, no, it’s only been six hours, you can’t start playing the father-in-law card.”

Shitty quickly shoots between them, “Make it quick, gentleman, Bitty’s mom is brutal. She’s laid out Tater twice.”

“What’s the point of you getting married if I can’t abuse the relationship for personal gain? You helped Richard, you traitor, so your husband can help me.” Bob argues, propping himself up with his hands instead of the sticks.

“I didn’t think you’d need the help,” Jack grins, switching to French and sliding up beside his father, “you’re supposed to be the best.”

“Ah, well, one too many concussions and my balance isn’t quite what it used to be.” Bob looks up from the ice in time to catch Jack’s smile falter.

“Are you feeling alright? Is your vertigo back?”

Christ. He didn’t want to make this about him; any latent injury of Bob’s was dwarfed a long time ago by Jack’s accident, not that this is anything close to a competition. He shakes his head and holds out his arm so Jack can hold him stable.

“I’m more than alright, just old and jaded, watching all you handsome young bucks skate circles around me.”

Jack laughs and Bob watches his gaze flit back to Eric, who’s carefully coiffed hair is finally falling out of place as he tries to keep his mother from ramming her sledge into Alexei Mashkov.

“Lean forward a bit, center your weight around your hips,” Jack explains, pressing a hand against Bob’s lower-back. “Not too far, use your sticks to move forward, it’s easier to balance when you’re in motion.”

Bob is struck suddenly by a sense of deja-vu; remembering how easy it had been to teach Jack to skate nearly thirty years earlier. Or how easy it had seemed to a Stanley Cup champion. Jack must have felt exactly how Bob does now, unsteady and unsure.

“There you go,” Jack says brightly once Bob has centered himself. “See? Not so hard after all. Now you just have to score.”

Jack pulls a puck from between his thighs and tosses it onto the ice. Bob moves to pass it and promptly finds himself lying back on his side.

“This is just like the time I tried snowboarding,” Bob groans. “Had to scoot down the mountain on my ass.”

“Can we make new teams?” Alicia asks. “This doesn’t feel fair.”

Jack snorts a laugh and pulls Bob upright again. “C’mon, Papa, you’ll have this down in no time. Can’t let Maman get bragging rights, she’ll never let you live it down.”
