Aww, thank you my love!
A vacation, eh? Well we know which one I’m going to pick! That would have to be the one with your good self and ohtobealady - our mini girlie getaway to the beach! The monstrous sunburn I got due to my own stupidity wasn’t that great, and I did hate to cut our visit to NOLA short as a result, but otherwise: we had great breakfasts, fun in the surf, sorbet and daiquiris, I bought a sun hat, we blocked traffic and discussed egg salad and penises (mutually exclusive, of course), cried together at The Theory of Everything, had a good drive and a free Cracker Barrel breakfast at the end there… Divine. Wish it could’ve gone on for longer.
Something I was told that meant a lot… There’s been a few things - I do rely a lot on verbal affirmations though I don’t like to admit it. One that springs to mind revolves around the difficult time following Mom’s death, on the way back from interring my mother’s ashes on the opposite end of the country from where the funeral was held. Not having the means myself, I rode with the funeral director, whose name was Alex and who was quite young. Naturally, I’m out of it still, but one of my gifts is polite small talk. It’s a six-hour drive though and you can’t fill it all, and I kept nodding off. It sounds kinda silly, and simple, but I remember him telling me that it was okay to sleep. It meant a lot because I wasn’t really sleeping, or resting, or grieving, or anything like that, and that simple comment seemed to encapsulate this notion that it was okay to be tired and weak and vulnerable at a time when I really didn’t feel like I had any ‘safe places’.
What turns me off! What fun! Obstinance, rudeness, lack of personal hygiene, any kind of controlling or belittling/patronizing behavior, unsafe activities like driving recklessly, close-mindedness, lack of interest in my interests and opinions. Basically: I’m watching how you treat your waiter and listening to how you speak about your mother, and paying attention to what kind of questions you ask me (if any) and what makes you laugh.
