you know this was their subtext

Hey pals. Apparently this is a thing that we, as an internet femslash community, need, so it is time for Grouchy Aunt J’s Guide To Fandom Deportment.

1. I know that you really like your favourite actors, especially the ones involved in your fave wlw ships. I totally understand this! They are pretty, and wlw fandom is really fun, and if your ship is also a canon ship then it is super exciting and validating to see yourself reflected in media that you love. I, too, love that feeling and get really passionate about the media that I watch, which is why I am a Fandom Old.

2. The actors in your favourite ships are people. Like, real people, with anxieties and food preferences and sometimes they have weird hair days and some of them are introverted and some of them are extroverted, etc etc etc. When they are acting in your favourite media, they are going to work.

3. Part of an actor’s job these days is to sometimes be around on social media. Sometimes not! If they are kind/friendly/available on social media, that is a fun perk of someone who is going the extra mile for their job. You are not entitled to this.

4. Even if you super like a ship and are really passionate about fandom, there are things it is not alright to do. Actors are people, and when fans start treating them poorly it is unkind and potentially frightening or traumatic. Plus, your behaviour reflects badly on all fans and means that fandom as a whole doesn’t get to have nice things anymore. (Thanks, jerks.)

5. It is never okay to:

  • harass actors on social media because something about their character is interfering with your ship/they’re not supporting your ship enough/they’re supporting the wrong ship too much/their character is problematic/the ship you think their ship is better than is problematic/just whatever please stop it this is not their problem. Tweeting at them will not fix whatever is upsetting you on the show you like, but it is probably pretty hurtful for them and not something they should have to put up with.
  • harass/question actors who are involved in queer ships about their sexuality in public spaces. People’s sexuality is private, and being involved in portraying a queer canon or subtext ship doesn’t give fans the right to know about an actor’s queerness or lack thereof unless they choose to volunteer that.
  • tell actors on social media about any sexual fantasies you may or may not have about them, b/c sexual consent also applies to actors.
  • send actors unsolicited links to/hand bound novellas/lovingly hand-lettered scrolls of fanfiction, especially smutty fanfiction, especially especially if that author is not aware that their fic is getting sent to actors inappropriately.
  • send actors your nsfw fanart about them, or someone else’s nsfw fanart about them, oh my g o d.
  • ask them to read your fanfiction or autograph your fanfiction, damn.

5a. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself: would I, or another a reasonable person, want to see this [insert fanwork of varying levels of nsfw] about a representation of myself/themselves? Most actors are actual people who find this just as upsetting as you might find it, if someone drew fanart of you and then brought it to your workplace.

5b. Yes, I know, there is a certain amount of distance involved in creating fanworks because they are about fictional characters and that storytelling and play is one of the things I love about fandom. But I also never, under any circumstances, would want any of the actors involved in my ships to read my fanfiction because it would be super uncomfortable and that’s the point

6. Also, your favourite actor’s non-actor family and friends are just that: not actors. Don’t bother them. Don’t - hypothetically - stalk them and try to catfish them to get information about your favourite actor. It’s super super not okay and it’s a huge boundary violation.

In conclusion: social media is super great and has changed fandom in a lot of neat ways, but having cool TV and movie actors available to connect with in that way is a privilege, not a right. Let’s all act like we are worthy of it.

Honesty… Shao’s scene with Dizzee is so telling. Shao was hinting that he knows abt Dizzee and Thor, and then he goes and tells dizzee that “people don’t need to know everything about him”. He’s basically saying that he’s hiding things abt himself too. And then the scene closes with “Don’t worry. I got you, my alien brother”, when just episodes before Dizzee was using that “alien” metaphor to talk abt his sexuality. This scene is highkey hinting that Shao is gay.

Queerbaiting in BBC Sherlock

Note: Before you label me as a ‘butthurt LGBTQ fan’ (as if such a thing even exists), I’m straight. Because apparently that makes my opinion valid now.

What is queerbaiting?

There’s a pretty wide definition, actually, but the one that’s most relevant here is: it’s when you make very heavy references to queer relationships or even queer characters in your shows, but then you never follow through on these references. It’s done to increase viewership and draw LGBTQ fans in (because of the promise of positive representation). So basically, it’s a marketing technique, but a harmful one.

Why is queerbaiting harmful?

Think of it this way. You’re gay/bi/a lesbian, and people around you aren’t very accepting or are plain homophobic. You see these two men on TV, and you start thinking…wait, it looks like they’re in love. You go online and realize that you’re not the only one reading the show in this way - there are literally thousands of other people interpreting it the same way. So you tell everyone around you, look at these two men. They’re gay and in love, and this is a popular TV show, and it means that my sexuality and my feelings are valid, and there’s nothing wrong with how I feel. Everyone laughs at you and says “Nope, they aren’t in love. You’re delusional.”

You think, okay, let them laugh. When this becomes cannon, they’ll know. The queer subtext is all there, and the writers wouldn’t dare not follow through on it, right? But sadly, the queer subtext remains just that: subtext. And suddenly all the homophobes around you stand validated.

But there’s no gay subtext in BBC Sherlock. It’s just a wishful ship.

Wrong. I’m not saying that everyone has to ship Johnlock, but no matter what you ship, you can’t deny the gay subtext in this show. People have written thousands of words worth of meta about it - and it all makes perfect sense. (I believe @inevitably-johnlocked has a master list - or she can link you to one). There are videos decoding all the gay subtext -  let’s take the example of TJLC Explained - 48 videos, and they add up to a total time of 37 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds - each one decoding a different aspect of the gay subtext in BBC Sherlock. Apart from the TJLC Explained series, there are a lot of other videos doing the same thing. Sure, a small number of such videos and meta are a little far-fetched, but the majority of them are well-referenced, well-written, and properly decode the various literary tropes used by BBC Sherlock. (Like, seriously, kudos to this fandom for being the absolute best meta-writers I have ever seen. You could turn half of these metas in as proper college essays.)

But the writers and BBC have said that there is no gay subtext.

The problem isn’t even so much with Johnlock not becoming cannon - it’s with the way Mofftiss and BBC have responded to being called out for their bullshit. Yes, they did a complete 180 around the time of season 4, saying “that is not the story we want to tell” and “it has never been implied that John and Sherlock are in love”. When so many people, literally thousands, are reading your show the exact same way, it’s because you put the subtext in there. Saying anything else is an insult to our intelligence - and again, it’s blatant queerbaiting and feeding heteronormativity and straight culture.

*yawn* Heteronormativity and straight culture are myths.

In His Last Vow, if Sherlock had come back to life for Molly or Irene Adler, everyone would insist that he’s in love with them. There would be no question about it. He came back to life for John, but him and John are eternal bros, right?

That, my friend, is heteronormativity right there.

Basically, you’re bitter that your ship didn’t become canon.

LOL. Read above^ you think anyone would put in this much effort just because ‘their ship didn’t become canon’? The Johnlock community is literally comprised of people of all ages, sexualities, nationalities, and genders. So honestly, pegging us as ‘horny teenage fangirls’ - bit ridiculous. We aren’t waving flags and going around yelling “It’s gay because they looked at each other!”, we’re actually ANALYZING and DECODING the show. Before you label us, go read some meta, then tell us we’re still delusional for believing Johnlock could be real.

Besides, I don’t see such an uproar happening about hetero ships. You know why? Because they have representation, whereas LGBTQ representation in media is still severely lacking.

But artists have the right to do what they want with their art.

Of course they do, but if my art offended an entire sect of society, I think I’d at least apologize, instead of blatantly denying everything and insulting the people who called me out for my bullshit.

The only video you ever need if someone says to you, “Sherlock and John are just friends, there is no reason to believe otherwise”. These are just clips of the show. I honestly don’t blame people who haven’t noticed these things – I didn’t notice them the first time I watched the series and I am gay. It’s because I didn’t expect to see it, so I unknowingly put my blinders up and consumed the media without a second thought. I saw but I did not observe. However, the moment I realized it on my own, I felt the metaphorical glass shatter and I was overcome with shock. How did I, a gay person, miss this? How?? But now that I’ve seen it, feel it with every fiber of my being, I cannot “un-see” it. It’s like looking at the moon every night and then one day noticing it looks like there’s a face in it. You will see the man in the moon every time you look because you can never go back to that moment when you didn’t know it was there. That’s what BBC Sherlock is to a lot of people when it comes to queer readings. You either see it or you don’t. You’re either open to the idea or you’re not. But once you see it, you will never go back. So regardless of what the BBC, the writers, or strangers online say, this queer reading of Sherlock is felt by viewers around the world and that experience will never be taken from them.

why indeed, John?

Why, when TFP leaked, did they make sure to call attention to it and ensure everyone and their dog knew it had leaked (which therefore had people watching it early)?

Why did they show TFP three days early when they showed TLD an hour before it aired to stop spoilers?

Why did Steven Moffat allude to a secret, lost episode when literally no one else was asking about it?

Why did radio times publish that article ten times?

Why did the mainstream media write about the Sherlock fandom vs Apple Tree Yard? Literally no one gives a shit seriously

Why is MSM talking about us at all? we’ve always been the crazy side of the fandom, no one gave us the time of day and suddenly our opinion is valued and even revered throughout certain articles?

Why has everyone gone into radio silence?

Why are there so many coincidences both within the writing of this season and the events happening around us?

Why do tv channels keep hinting at more Sherlock and then the listings magically disappear when people become aware of their existence?

Why did a Sherlock episode called ‘The New Friend’ appear in the listings? Where did that come from?

Why do they keep disappearing whenever we get close enough to the dates (almost like they’re saying watch this space)? Why was PBS showing three unknown episodes airing in February back to back?

Why were they going to call The Final Problem 'Backlash’ if they didn’t expect to get backlash?

Why would they have instances of Chekhov’s gun dotted all over the series with no intention to finish what they started?

Why, in TLD, is there a poster saying 'March 8th’ and 'the secret will be revealed’?

Why did they not have anyone sign NDAs for TFP unlike tld and previous episodes before it?
Why did the BBC scour the internet for the chess piece promo and have their lawyers crack down on tumblr blogs and place copyright infringements on everyone that reblogged them?

Why, then TFP was released early, didn’t the BBC lawyers follow up the way we know they can when the finale of their biggest show had gifs, spoilers and meta running rampant on Tumblr? Why ignore all of it and go after the chess piece promo?

Why release the s1 scripts if not to tide us over and keep us playing the game?

Why teach us how to play the game without following through on their own damned story? They placed this subtext into their narrative. They knew what they were doing. no one stumbles onto subtext this beautiful: No one will ever convince me that you told me a lie.

Why is TLD a masterpiece in cinematography and story (but not necessarily characterisation: still not happy about John vs Sherlock) when, one episode later, TFP is a giant shitshow of awful transitions, characterisation and fucky scenarios?

WHY DOES THE FUCKIN SKULL CHANGE COLOURS KILL ME

Why does Derren Brown keep cropping up and why does all of this stuff about subliminal messaging make so much damned sense, when certain phrases, words and catchphrases always stick out amongst the entirety of fandom? Things like, ‘there must be something comforting about the number three, people always give up after three’. ‘it’s never twins’. ‘no one could be that clever. you could.’ ‘this is a lie. yes.’ and there are so many more, that’s just off the top of my head

Why would they say ‘insane wish fulfillment’ if this isn’t an ARG? why did BBC say ‘be part of making history’ if there’s nothing to interact with?

Why advertise this whole series around love, and more importantly, why advertise ‘Sherlock’s in love, but who with?’

Why plant the seed and disappear right when it’s about to get good?

Why say ‘to hell with deferred gratification’ if that’s all we’re getting?

Something fucky, that’s why. Add more if you got ‘em

Fan Parody Accounts on Twitter

As in… tptb are parodying fans. Probably.

https://twitter.com/LoudestTubSext/with_replies

https://twitter.com/IvyBosom/with_replies

Yes, you’re reading that right. We’ve got two twitter accounts here that are named after two absolute BNFs, ivyblossom and lsit. These accounts were both created this month and their first tweet was identical, so we can be reasonably certain they were created by the same people:

Go and check out these accounts. They’re both very focussed on BBC Sherlock and they keep tweeting the link to a very suspicious video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xePPOO0Y4tg

In the video description it says: “A message to BBC and Hartswood Films.” And the video then talks about what went wrong with BBC Sherlock etc, using only photos with short texts on them.

The really interesting part is this: There are only two videos on this Youtube channel, one of them made before tfp aired and the other one after, and the account is called Dale Pike. And guess what? There isn’t just one corresponding twitter account, there are two.

https://twitter.com/ibelieveinPike This is the first one. It was created in 2015, but there are only a few tweets from back then. It’s only become really active in January 2017, tweeting a lot of #Norbury stuff like you’d expect it to (and like dymm wants us to…).

That person is calling themselves Dale Pike. In canon Sherlock Holmes, however, there’s a journalist called Langdale Pike. And sure enough, there’s a twitter account under that name as well: https://twitter.com/Contact_Dale_P/

It seems likely that both accounts are supposed to belong to the same person. Look at Langdale’s tweet:

Sounds like Langdale has two twitter accounts.

I haven’t had time to look at all of these in detail (it’s 2 am), but I wanted to talk about this because they actually made parodies of fan accounts. How incredible is that??

@ivyblossom (I know you see things a bit differently wrt tfp, but obviously you need to be tagged here, if only to take a look at that parody account. I hope you don’t mind the speculation here!)

@loudest-subtext-in-tv (LoudestTubSext… What a Name.)

Tagging a few other people as well: @porl0ck (who, it should be mentioned, is the most organised when it comes to all of these twitter accounts woww), @worriesconstantly @whimsicalethnographies @jenna221b @smoljohnlock

I think he believes that somehow they must recognize that the other one cares. I’m sure she knows he cares about her. The fact that she tries to give him back the sword Oathkeeper and he kind of says, “It’s yours. It’s always been yours,”…the subtext is it’s almost like saying, “You keep my heart. It’s yours. It’s always been yours.” - Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

The Foxhole Court characters as things I've said
  • Kevin Day: (after a tough bus ride) My goal tonight is to drink so much I either get alcohol poisoning or forget why I wanted to drink at all
  • Neil Josten: So, to the surprise of no one, I was lying about all of that
  • Andrew Minyard: I care more about cake than I do about any human I've ever met
  • Aaron Minyard: (after something good happened) what the fuck is this. This is suspicious as fuck, I'm calling bullshit
  • Allison Reynolds: I just realized my top motivating factors are spite and the promise of wearing cool clothes
  • Dan Wilds: Why are men so consistently gross all the time???
  • Nicky Hemmick: I think I'm a fun driver. It's like being on a rollercoaster but better bc there's an actual chance you might die.
  • Matt Boyd: I really hope all my friends know how much I care about them. I never want anyone to question where they stand with me (turns to friend) Especially you, you're the love of my life.
  • Renee Walker: (about a badger that tried to attack me) He's so cute!! And he's talented!!
  • Jean Moreau: If the world could stop being consistently awful for like 30 seconds that'd be awesome, thanks
  • Riko Moryima: The only thing we're entitled to is to die screaming
  • Bonus, Neil Josten: How do people pick up on subtext in conversations? I've never picked up on a hint ever in my life
Why I don’t see Destiel as real

Have I noticed odd subtext between Dean and Castiel? Yes. Do I think that subtext adds up to a homosexual relationship between a sexless, genderless angel and a human man who can barely manage to have a meaningful relationship outside of the brotherly bond he has with his own brother? No.

I don’t see the show Supernatural as a show about romance. It’s about family. Castiel is family to Sam and Dean, the only family they really have left. (I don’t have positive feelings towards Mary, but she counts, obviously.) Destiel is something that was borne out of fan fiction. The two things are not related.

I’m a bisexual woman. I’m not locked into the hetero-normative relationship patterns on TV. I don’t believe in traditional anything, so if I thought there was a reason to believe Destiel was real, I would. I’m also not trying to change anyone’s mind or argue about whether it exists. I don’t think it does, but others do, and that’s all fine. All I’m saying is, until it’s directly addressed on the show or confirmed by the actors/writers/etc., it’s not real.

Jensen has repeatedly said(and been threatened as a result) that Destiel is not real. If the man who originated a character in the pairing says it’s not real, then maybe you should all just accept it as not real and move on until it’s confirmed or explicitly depicted. Obviously you shouldn’t stop shipping it or writing it in your fan fiction, because some of the hottest fic out there is Destiel fan fic. But you can’t really say it’s canon until it’s actually directly confirmed. Subtext isn’t confirmation. It’s disrespectful to the actor who plays the character to insist something is real when they’ve said it’s not. I respect the actors of SPN and their wishes. If Jensen says it’s not real, then that’s good enough for me.

I realize that the Destiel shippers will likely be upset by this, but the truth is the truth. I don’t know why so much time(including this post) has been devoted to a fictional ship when it could be spent doing something so much more productive. The actors of SPN devote their time to helping people outside work, and we’re all here screaming about a nonexistent ship. It originated in fan fiction and not the show for a reason, y’all. Sorry.

Post Script: Keep the hate coming, trolls. Your true colors are showing. 😉
What’s in the Mix with a Mix-Tape? (12x19)

Mix-tapes were a feature of my twenties in the early 1990s. I’ve still got a tonne of them. Although, that tech died for a reason - it degrades big time.

But, I’ve kept them for sentiment. They have home-made covers, created from cut-up and cut-down postcards, with hand-writing in coloured pen listing the tracks on the inside. And sometimes, hand-drawn hearts and personal dedications.

They were made for me by people who loved me - some of whom are still in my life, some not.

Making a mix-tape took hours, especially if you were (as we usually did) making a compilation and mixing and matching artists. You had to think about how each track would follow another; the tone, the tempo, the mood, the lyrics. Wind, rewind, record, relisten… they were extended love-notes very often.

Dean’s mix-tape for Cas reads “Dean’s top 13 Zepp TRA XX”

He’s written it as “TRA XX” as if, just maybe, you could read that as a couple of kisses at the end, insteady of a groovy way to spell “tracks”. Ambiguous, diffident, scrawled, unspoken, but there… Oh Dean….

But, Cas tried to give it back. After ignoring Dean’s phone-calls, Cas returned to the bunker to try and return a piece of Dean ‘s heart, to lie to him and steal from him.

Cas came into Dean’s room, his intimate and personal space, and, as Dean says, “played him”. He stole the Colt from under Dean’s pillow, knowing full well what the history of the Colt means to Dean.

Characterization-wise, how can Cas have regressed like that? Knowing, as he does, that going behind Dean’s back in S6 hurt Dean so much and began such a terrible rift between them?

Sure, Cas says it’s to protect the Winchesters from Dagon. No doubt that’s true.

But, Castiel is also someone who has recently said “I love you” (in 12x12 Stuck in the Middle with You) and not heard it back…

Have you ever said “I love you” to someone and not heard it back?

It haunts you, it eats at you, you feel stupid, you feel rejected, you feel… lost.

Dean’s mix-tape was probably his way of trying to say, “I love you” back,  but how would Cas know what a mix-tape means? Or perhaps he did know, thanks to Metatron’s pop-culture upgrade, and returning the tape was our angel’s way of being a bit snippy, a bit passive-aggressive  - Thanks for the cop-out tape gift, Dean, but I would quite like to hear you say it.

And why is Dean so forgiving, explaining to Sam how Cas needs a win, how he gets it, as he rumages around under the hood of Cas’s truck, fixing her up?

Well, it’s eternal sub-text, of course, but here goes…

Because Dean knows he is someone to whom, “I love you,” has been said. And, despite his worried phone calls, his appeals to “Team Free Will”, Dean also knows he is someone who has not said it back…

unless of course you count two “XX”’s on a mix-tape.

someone: inception wasn’t the greatest. the concept was cool i guess but it was kind of bor-

me: so like, anyways! u know that scene where they’re in the hotel in the dream and eames is on the floor about to put the needle in his wrist—which he was totally capable of doing by himself by the way—and arthur just fuckin, comes over, gently takes eames hand and puts the needle in for him while eames lays back and smiles up at him and is like “security’s gonna run you down hard” and arthur smiles and shoots back “and i will lead them on a merry chase” and eames huffs and says “just be back before the kick” and arthur is like “go to sleep mr eames” like what the fuck? was that eames seriously telling arthur to be careful and to be safe??? was that arthur honestly smiling back at him and saying “of course, im going to be perfectly fine” like it sounds like a conversation they’ve had before? don’t even get me started on the “EAMES? he’s in mombasa!” honestly arthur how the fuck did you know that. HOW! why was there so much subtext, c nolan? i need answers it’s been 5 years i am tired

anonymous asked:

When writing an asexual character, what can I do to avoid poor representation and harmful tropes?

For good representation I would actually have the character come out or greatly imply they are asexual, subtext works but usually thats all we, and other queer orientations, ever get.

I would avoid having too many tropes like the cold, distant, heartless asexual, while an asexual person can be like that I think thats usually a negative stereotype.

I wouldn’t write a character as asexual just because you want them to seem innocent, we usually know whats going on we’re just not feeling it.

Asexual people can pick up on flirting or sexual advances, some may not and that can work well as a way to make your character come off as ace. (I know this can also be a trait of autism, but it can work in both cases).

Remember that many aces use the split attraction model but many don’t. Asexual does not mean can’t be in a relationship or even have sex themselves for various reasons though I’d be careful with writing a asexual character like that because it might be confused unless it’s explained well.

12x22: Dean Winchester is going to die

Well, when I was new, I wrote a whole post about this, about how early episodes but especially 12x11 foreshadowed that Performing!Dean was going to be deconstructed by the end of the season… Fans self.

The death of Performing!Dean in this episode was BEAUTIFUL. It was EXQUISITE. I couldn’t have asked for MORE!

I literally grabbed and punched @amwritingmeta in the leg I don't know how many times as I paused it to point and shout.

1. The Grenade Launcher

So, the grenade launcher = performing!Dean metaphor. We had hoped and boy did they deliver! Did anyone else notice, while Dean was *ahem* knocking down the seemingly unpenetrable physical walls, that, maybe it was my weird link, but it seemed to me that the flashing ‘red’ lights in the MoL bunker were decidedly pinky-purpley in colour rather than standard alarm bells red and the flashlights glowed on the blue side of white… (the MoL HQ lights are also brightly pinky-purple to keep the theme going, I mean honestly what self respecting 1950s MoL guy chose this for the bunker instead of the usual red? Please!) Just saying.

“It wasn’t long ago I thought we had it made. We had Cas back, we had mom back. I mean it wasn’t perfect but still…”.  This is it. Dean’s facade has been coming down all season, but at this point now, he just doesn’t see the point in holding it up anymore.

And what does Sam do? HE OPENS UP TO DEAN. He tells Dean how he feels, the reasons why he followed the MoL - that it was “easier than leading”, that he made a mistake. This enables Dean to be truthful himself, in the end, now. Again, they have had many times to reflect on their own deaths but this is another time similar to 11x23 where he can really reflect on what he has lost, and now what is that? Cas and Mary.

Dean uses the grenade launcher, that he’s been dying to do since forever, blows down the impenetrable seeming wall, saves the day. How meta do we need to go? It’s BLATANT. The choice in the colour of the lights, the dialogue, his feelings… the walls are Dean’s facade and the grenade launcher is his way of breaking it down. YES. This has been building all season and much prior to this other meta writers have said that he grenade launcher is associated with Dean’s hidden side, his bisexuality, Destiel etc… this is meta gold, THIS is a meta aspect Dabb was talking about. Toni even then parallels the tearing down of Mary’s mental wall with Dean’s physical use of the grenade launcher, just moments after. It is so well put together :D

Also, I have long believed that the bunker had to go. It represents too much the MoL side of things and the whole ‘living below ground’ thing is way too underground / metaphorically bad. For me they need a real, healthy home which is in between Bobby’s hunter house and the MoL bunker. Hopefully they will find a nice modern MoL home with kit but that isn’t so hidden above ground somewhere next season to take over and make their own :D

2. Sam the MoL leader

“Real hunting isn’t just about killing, it’s about doing whats right… I want you to follow me”. We have wanted this for Sam all season, the MoL story fits his personal arc so well (so did Eileen, still bitter), this is Sam’s endgame. Sam said just moments earlier that he didn’t want to lead, but now he is, because it is necessary and because he is good at it. I believe he will now see that this is what he wants and will work towards this for his endgame.

This then leads to…

3. Dean and Sam - ending the brodependency and Dean as Sam’s parent

Dean lets Sam go, the dialogue is amazing. “You’re ready for this… you got this” paralleled with an actual mom/daughter conversation between Jody and Alex.

Dean literally talks to Sam like a parent letting their child go off to college and I had to pause this for a long long moment to process and scream “they’re actually going there!” not even knowing what was coming next… man…

Then comes the Mary / Dean scene.

4. Dean and Mary

This was always going to be what Mary led to for Dean’s arc. After Amara had started this addressing of Dean’s facade in season 11 and Mary is basically an extension of Amara this season re: Dean (in the same way that she still has to influence Sam’s arc re: Lucifer, that is for next season). I LOVED how BLATANT and textual they made this, the actual lack of subtext because it was all in the ACTUAL TEXT!

Firstly, Dean considers letting Toni go, which I had expected, to show the difference between our boys (morality) and the MoL as monsters.

Then… “Dad was just a shell…I had to be a father and a mother to keep him safe, and that wasnt fair, and I couldnt do it, and you wanna know what that was like? They killed the girl that he loved, he got possessed by Lucifer, they tortured him in hell and he lost his soul…But I forgive you, for everything.” MY HEART!

Ok, yeah, they did the thing, they brought Jess up 30 mins before killing the guy that Dean loves after not mentioning her for…. A DECADE? And paralleling one of the few scenes we ever saw her in with Dean/Cas too? After we already had the parallel with Dean seeing Cas when driving along, same as Sam did? So, only the scene of Sam and Jess in the bar and the scene where Dean actually meets her haven’t been paralleled now with Dean/Cas? I’M LIVING!

But seriously. The rest is exactly what we, the audience needed to understand Dean and to show casual viewers Dean’s inner angst in order to understand the facade coming down, this is exactly what Dean needed. He has come full circle, this is the start of the culmination of the end of Performing!Dean (which Jensen has no said at Jibcon will be furthered in season 13!).

Dean actually TELLS Mary in his mind that he hates her, but that he loves her. That he had to be Sam’s mother and father, and that it wasn’t FAIR. This is so important, that he didnt just say that it happend and that it sucked, but that it wasn’t FAIR and that he did not DESERVE IT.

This is Dean addressing not just his mother but how HE feels about it, how he feels about HIMSELF, that he is saying that he DESERVES MORE and has SELF WORTH.

These are all the words I have been using since 12x01 re: Dean . I’m so happy!

5. Ketch kills Toni, Mary kills Ketch after Dean beats him to a pulp, PERFECT, Jody kills Hess, again perfect.

This had to happen to keep our boys on the ‘don’t kill humans unless they HAVE to’ side, especially after Dean considered letting Toni go. Thank you.

6. Winchester family reunion

Sam’s forgiveness of Mary, Dean’s reaction to the happy family hug (it’s great but someone is missing…). “Who we are… we kick ass. We save the world”

SAM AND DEAN ARE ACCEPTING THEMSELVES THIS SEASON. In 12x09 Sam said it, now Dean says it. After all the angst this episode and for Dean all season…

This whole episode was for me the culmination of the deconstruction of Performing!Dean this season, which has been the main theme carried through on the character - driven side of things, it was beautiful.

In many ways I view this as the character - led season finale and 12x23 as the plot - led season finale (which I will post my thoughts on right up next).

I cannot WAIT to see the result of this episode come across next season.

We have not only now Performing!Dean pretty much dead or on his way out, the Dean Winchester is going to die metaphor was fully used and was fantastic, but coupled with Cas being brutally taken away from Dean, the parallels with 2 key canon romantic couples (Sam/Jess and Cain/Colette) in this within SECONDS of each other, plus the Jibcon revelations that we will see more of Dean’s reaction to this in season 13, apparently crying (and Jared not even hiding Destiel jokes now) make me pretty much 100% convinced Destiel is really endgame now.

Aside from this we now have Dean accepting himself, his internal self acceptance arc coming to a close, Sam’s MoL arc coming up and I will touch on the other aspects of the story for Sam in the next post as they are relevant to Lucifer / Jack, and Cas’s arc too…

Season 13 is already set up for exactly the endgame I am wishing for!

Tink’s Endgame Wishlist :

- Mol! Sam (and Eileen, Chuck I’m still bitter about that though, I really hoped her death would turn out to be a misdirection). Pretty much CHECK.

- Hunter / Mol collaboration with Sam and Dean as leaders. Pretty much CHECK.

- End of the brodependency, Dean acknowledging he was Sam’s parent and letting him go. CHECK.

- End of Performing!Dean. Pretty much CHECK.

- Human!Cas and self worth and belonging for his arc. TBA probably next season, what happened this season makes no sense if not to lead to this.

- Destiel. Pretty much CHECK. (And now after seeing Jibcon and the boys just joking about it all the time? Yeah, I don’t think they have an issue with this!).

- ALL THE RAINBOWS

Just going to address a few things in regards to our favourite pair, Cole and Lili.

They’re not a PR thing. I am 1000% certain about this. Had they been, by now we would have had an album full of photos of them kissing and holding hands all over town. You all have to remember something important here, the SH family are geniuses. I have never seen such an astute bunch of people. So many of you have proven you have the right qualifications to join the FBI or even become private investigators. The only reason the rumours about SH dating started was because of this community here on Tumblr being able to piece together every little crumb that was thrown our way and complete the puzzle. The media caught wind of this because our sleuthing made its way to Twitter. Most of the articles speculating on SH have used evidence from a “SH are dating” thread on Twitter. So it’s us, the fans, who figured it out. Lili has been giving us clues for months - not because she wanted people to know, but because she wanted to share as much of her relationship with her man by still remaining private. Cole and Lili didn’t know people would become so invested in their love life, that’s probably why they toned it down this last month. If they were just “friends” I can assure you they would not be so secretive all the time. Why would two friends care if people think they’re dating? If anything, they would revel in these dating rumours and use it to promote Bughead as much as possible. But you know why they don’t? Because they care more about their offscreen romance than they do their onscreen one. They’re protecting this beautiful bond they have.
Also, Cole is the last person on the planet who would ever agree to publicity stunts. He is so anti celebrity and anti Hollywood. He rarely even promotes Riverdale nor does he contribute to the live tweeting sessions every week. So why the hell would he sign up for a relationship that’s all PR? Anyway, I’ve never doubted that Cole and Lili were together and in love. I’ll admit, recently I had my worries that they might have been on a break - and who knows - maybe they really were, and they worked everything out yesterday or today even. Regardless, I think they’ve both agreed to be a little more open about being together and that’s why we’ve been spoiled with a lot of goodies today. Cole has definitely shown signs of slowly becoming more publicly affectionate towards Lili by showing her face in his IG story last week, and commenting with heart eyes on her photo. Does it honestly surprise anyone that this is happening? It was building up to this. They won’t stay quiet forever. One only needs to look at Cole and Lili when they’re standing next to each other and there is no denying the chemistry between those two. It’s palpable.

As for the people thinking Lili’s caption about the breakfast date being about the dog … please just look up the word subtext. Cole was the most noticeable part of that photo - thanks to the one jacket he owns - and if you pay attention you’ll notice his face in the table’s reflection … just saying. Lili’s clever; she knows exactly what’s she’s doing.
She clearly used the dog as a cover up to not have to blatantly say, “Hey, ya’ll, Cole and I are on a date”. Read between the lines. She was on a date with Cole, obviously. The dog most likely belonged to the people sitting next to them.
Today they indirectly told us they’re dating, and that was probably their intention all along. They’re never going to come right out and mouth the words “we’re together”; they’re going to keep doing it in the most sneakiest and cryptic ways.

Ps, if you’re a hater, I’m not interested in hearing your negative opinion on this. Go complain or sulk in your own tags.

First, I’d like to welcome all the new Batjokes shippers that came from watching the Lego Batman movie. :) If you’re into the fluffy cute side of this normally twisted ship and would like more cute content like you saw in the lego verison, I think the Batjokes in Batman: The Brave and the Bold might be appealing to you as well! :) They even team up in one episode, it’s fantastic. Here’s a clip of it on YT:

Now I’d like to move onto a topic I think is important to be discussed with all these new shippers arriving: if you only like the fluffy cute version of this ship, that’s fine! I understand that a lot of you are not a fan of Joker in most versions (mostly because of how awful he is to Harley) and I completely respect that. You ship what you want to ship!

But I would just like to politely ask you to treat us (a.k.a. people who ship Batjokes in all kinds of versions) with the same respect. I’ve been shipping Batjokes since 2011 and through the years I’ve gotten a lot of hate for shipping it because well … it’s a dark twisted ship (some user even talked shit about me & the ship on their blog after they found out I was shipping it).

But the darkness of it is also appealing to me and part of the reason I ship it so much. I adore villains (not in a romanticised way – I fully acknowledge they’re awful people) and I loveee exploring complex, fucked up relationships in fiction.

And I’ve already seen people saying that anyone who ships Batjokes outside the Lego verse is problematic and bad. And that makes me really sad. Where do you think that the creators of the Lego movie got their inspiration for the Batjokes we got in it? Batman and Joker have a long history of homoerotic subtext. Some creators even flat out admitted that Joker is in love with Batman. You have to remember that there would be no amazingly adorable Lego Batjokes without its previous versions and their long history.

We’re not bad people for liking Batjokes outside of the Lego version. Everyone knows that a relationship like this is a big no in real life and shouldn’t be supported outside of fiction. Or Joker himself for that matter – he’s a fun entertaining villain but obviously no sane person supports someone like that in real life.

Anyway to conclude this little post, ship what you want to ship and respect each other. Older Batjokes fans: don’t try to force all other versions of the ship on the new shippers or call them “fake fans” (not that I’ve seen anyone do that btw - I’m saying it just in case because I’ve seen other fandoms do it with different stuff) if they only like the Lego version. And new shippers: please don’t post condescending hateful posts in the tag / send us hate for liking this ship in other versions. Let’s all share this tag with love and respect.

That’s all. Thanks for reading!
