Over Again: Chapter 1

Freshman Year

The parking lot was a mess. Cars poured in loaded with computers and clothes and all the treasures a college freshman could not bear to part with as she leaves home for the first time. Parker Frank followed her father’s truck and parked behind him by the curb in front of the dormitory hall, her new home. She stared at the façade of the building in awe. On the tour last fall, the building had been quiet, its residents at class or in their rooms. Today, it was bustling with activity and Parker realized for the first time how large it was. She was sure that her entire town could fit easily within the ivy covered walls. A feeling of excitement and terror washed over her.

“This’ll have to do,” her father, Joe, said, interrupting her thoughts. He came around the side of his truck and pulled down the tailgate. “Go with your mom and figure out where we need to go. Your sisters and I will grab the first load.”

Her mother wrapped her arm around her oldest daughter’s shoulder and gave her a reassuring squeeze. When they entered the lobby, a frazzled looking Resident Assistant was at the front with a clipboard. She pointed towards a staircase and provided instructions for finding the RA who lived on Parker’s floor. They were shown her room and given a key.

Parker’s roommate was not in the room, but her stuff was. After a quick tour of the rest of the floor, Parker and her mother went back outside to grab a few boxes. They passed the rest of the family on the way out and pointed them in the right direction.

At the truck, Parker grabbed a box and marveled at the fact that most of her belongings had already been taken in by her dad and sisters. It was amazing how everything that belonged to her could have fit in the bed of this truck. Even more mind boggling was the fact that these items no longer belonged in her room at her parent’s house. They belonged here, with her at the university. She was going to be on her own. She was wrapped up in these thoughts when she turned and ran directly into someone, her box hitting him squarely in the stomach.

“Oh my god,” she exclaimed. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.”

“It’s alright, love. You can run into me any time.” The owner of the voice was only a few inches taller than Parker but he had broad shoulders and a kind smile, even as he rubbed his stomach where the box had hit him. His eyes were clear blue and his dark hair was capped by bleached blonde. It was currently flattened on his head with sweat but it was obvious that he frequently ran his fingers through it, making it stand up in a quiff. He was surrounded by a four other guys, one of whom was holding a soccer ball.
