“Where did you find it?” I asked Cas.

“On the windowsill,” Cas said, pulling me over to Charlie’s window. “I didn’t notice it at first because there’s no smell.”

I opened Charlie’s bedroom window and saw the yellow powder of sulfur scattered around, but like Cas said, there was no smell.

Animal Instincts - Part 2

Fandom: The Flash

Series: Part 1 / Part 2

Summary: Ava still struggles with how she is going to tell Barry she can communicate with animals and begins to have some suspicions with his new connection to Star Labs.

Warnings: There aren’t any in this part, but as I get further into the plot, I am going to start tagging anything with potential animal abuse. It will mostly be mentioned or anything that happens will be stated after the fact, but Ava does work at a rescue sanctuary. It’s a part of the job. I myself am a volunteer trainer at an equine rescue/training facility, so I hear a lot of abuse and neglect cases and deal with the ramifications of it nearly everyday. This is what Ava will deal with as well.

I just wanted to let you all know what will be going down in future parts of this series. If you have any questions on it or what I do, feel free to use the ask box or message me.

Ava sat in the outdoor patio of Jitters, smiling at the flock of sparrows chittering in the tree next to her. As soon as they realized she could understand them, they immediately began barraging her with news of nestlings, mates, where the best food was, and general gossip of competing flocks in the park. Ava listened as she idly doodled in the notebook in front of her and sipped her coffee. A few of the more trusting sparrows fluttered down on the table, looking for a treat from her half-finished orange-glazed muffin.

“Now listen, bread is terrible for you and your young,” Ava murmured, both out loud and through her connection. Reaching into her backpack, she pulled out a small bag of birdseed. Opening it, she poured a small pile onto the other side of the notebook. “Eat this. It’s better and tastier than any scraps you’ll pick up around here.”

“Careful, sis. You keep that up, people will think those birds actually understand you,” Barry joked as he walked up. One of the females, the flock leader Ava had named Crown because of a crown-like marking on her head, whistled angrily at the rude male. Ava hid her wince and managed to smile up at her older brother.

“They just like that I occasionally have birdseed with me. It’s better than bread scraps.” She smiled more genuinely when he leaned down and kissed her head. She noticed Cisco was standing behind her brother, both with coffees in their hands. “Hey Cisco.”

“Hey Ava. How did we pass by without noticing you?” Ava shrugged.

“This table is tucked away more. I like it cause its quieter than inside.”

“Can’t argue with that. Wish we could hang out a bit more, but Dr. Wells is waiting for us back at the lab, Barry,” Cisco reminded. Barry nodded and hugged Ava again.

“Everything okay? You’ve been hanging around the labs a lot since you woke up,” she asked, idly sipping her coffee. The question may have been innocent, but Barry wasn’t fooled; Ava was tenacious when it came to mysteries and secrets. On the rare occasion he was hiding something from her, she had a way of wheedling it out of him. Fortunately, he also had experience in dodging her, at least for a while. He reached to grab a piece of her muffin.

“No more than you hanging around the sanctuary until after dark,” he fired back. She moved to smack his hand away, but he had already grabbed a small chunk. “Missed me,” he taunted around the bite. “Dr. Wells is letting me help with some of the projects in my spare time.”

“Maybe on a day off you could come by and check it out?” Cisco asked.

“Maybe. With the sanctuary running on skeleton crew, I’m on call more often.” It was a half-truth; Diane and Mark did let her pick up more shifts, but the crew was hardly a skeleton anymore. Cisco shrugged.

“Whenever you get the chance. Caitlyn’s been asking about you too,” Barry answered. He kissed her head again. “We gotta go. Love you.”

“Love you too.” She called out as the boys walked out of the patio. She leaned back in her seat, staring at her muffin. She suddenly didn’t have an appetite for the rest of her muffin. Instead, her thoughts were consumed by the conversation that just took place.

Your flock mate wasn’t truthful, Crown peeped, hopping towards her hand. Is that normal for your flock mate?

No more than me doing the same, Crown, Ava replied. “But it’s still odd.”

“What’s odd?” For the second time that morning, Ava was startled by one of her siblings. This time, it was Iris who was sitting down in the empty seat. “And aren’t you jumpy?” Ava chuckled.

“Just talking with Crown here.” She giggled when the bold sparrow hopped towards Iris’ bag. “She wants to know if you have that granola you usually have with you?”

“You spoil them, Ava,” Iris chastised in her best “big sister” voice. Regardless, she had reached into her bag and pulled out the bag of granola trail mix, adding a small handful to what was left of the birdseed.

“Yeah, Barry said something similar,” Ava muttered. Iris’ calm demeanor never changed, though Ava still caught her shifting slightly closer. “He and Cisco apparently spotted me on the way out. He said I needed to be careful or else people will think they understand.” She gestured towards Crown and couple sparrows who were pecking at the new treat.

“You do need to be careful,” Iris agreed. “You have a bad habit of speaking out loud what you can tell them telepathically.”

“But Barry doesn’t know that!” Ava slouched in the chair with a slight pout. Iris ignored it.

“Even more reason. I think you should work on that more than the shared mind thing. Where was Barry going today?”

“Star Labs.” Ava stared at her muffin and the missing chunk Barry took. That was a pretty quick snatch ‘n grab. Usually, I can graze his hand. “Hey Iris?” Iris looked up from checking her email. “You get the feeling Barry is hiding something?”

           “Sometimes, yeah. Why?”

“I don’t know. He’s been going to Star Labs a lot in his spare time. Something about helping with projects.” After a thoughtful moment, Iris shook her head.

“Listen, we are all still adjusting to what happened and Barry realizes you’ve pulled back a bit. He’s just giving you space until you want to tell him about your ability. You did the same thing after you came to live with us.” Ava nodded, remembering that terrible year.

“Yeah, probably. I still don’t know how I’m going to break it to them.”

“Well you better figure it out, girl, before one of them interrupts one of those conversations you have with the tigers or they see you mind-meld with Regan.”

“Nah, we set him free a couple days ago. I think he went off to Star City. Speaking of which, I saw you wrote that PSA about dogs going missing from yards. Any more information on that?” Iris shook her head.

“No. Eddie mentioned he might’ve had a lead or two, but nothing substantial.” Ava hummed softly.

“Diane’s talked about it too. She thinks there may be a dog fighting ring trying to get started and people are kidnapping potential bait dogs.” The thought of what that meant for those family pets hurt Ava deeply. Sensing her depression, Crown fluttered up onto Ava’s shoulder and began preening her red hair soothingly, peeping softly. She raised a finger and stroked the little sparrow’s head gratefully. “Mark was talking about knowing a couple guys who might have intel on that. Maybe Eddie could talk to them?”

“I’ll tell him. Since we both have the day off, how about we go do some shopping? I feel like treating my little sister to a girl’s day.” Iris smiled as Ava grinned. She knew some well spent sister time would distract Ava from her current problems.

“I’ve got no plans. Let me take this plate to Dani and I’ll meet you up front.” Iris nodded and left. Putting the napkin with the birdseed and granola near the bushes, Ava reached for the half-eaten muffin. Just as she was about to grab it, a spark of electricity jolted her. Yelping, she snatched her hand back, cradling it against her chest. The hair on her arm and neck stood on end as a prickly feeling raced up her arm and down her spine. Looking, she could already a small welt forming on her palm. Had she really gotten a first degree burn from static? Near the spot where Barry had grabbed a piece?

You okay? Crown was still on her shoulder and had seen the whole thing. I felt that all the way up here!

I’m fine. Go eat the rest of the seed. Tell your flock I’ll come back Tuesday before work. Crown chirped, preened a strand of blue-tipped red hair, and flew off her shoulder. Ava hardly noticed, still staring at the spot. Hesitantly, she reached for her food but nothing else happened. She’d have to puzzle it out later; Iris was waiting and her palm was burning. Hopefully Dani had some burn cream in the first aid kit, otherwise, the first stop on the shopping trip would have be CVS.

She’s just a hopeless girl, wandering mindlessly through her life and she needs direction. She needs someone to hold her hand and catch her when she falls. She just needs to know that someone is there for her; that someone will always care for her and that she’s not alone in this. She wants to feel significant and prioritized, not shooed off to the side with an “I’ll text her later”. Man, you gotta get her. Get her before it’s too late.
True loves kiss | Chapter 2

Chapter 1

Don’t move. Maybe if you stand still he’ll leave, just like a T-Rex.

“Y/N? Nod for yes and shake for no.” Dean said hand unmoving. You slowly nodded and his hands slid up your sides sending shockwaves in their wake. While one hand lightly moved your arm, the other lifted your shirt over your head until you were free again.

You were about to let out a sigh of relief when you noticed something. You were standing in your room, in only your underwear, with Dean Winchester. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t enjoy every second of it though.

You turned around and almost blanched. Dean wasn’t wearing a shirt, and his pants hung dangerously low on his hips showing off his hip bones.

He cleared his throat “eyes are up here princess.”

‘So does that make you my prince?’ You raised your eyebrow and he laughed.

“Even though you can’t speak I know you just made some smart ass remark in that pretty little head of yours.”

You rolled your eyes and began to pick up your clothes to put away. “Y/N.”

Dean said suddenly making you jump. You turned around and raised your eyebrow.

“Back at the hospital I uh…” Oh no, here it comes. He’s gonna tell you how much of a friend you are to him and give you a firm handshake. Probably throw one or two ‘bros’ in there just for the hell of it.

“I was going to say that what happened at the warehouse scared the living shit out of me. Seeing you like that on that on the floor just.” He walked towards you and lightly gripped your elbows “Y/N I -”

“Y/N I GOT IT, I KNOW- oh!” Sam rushed in holding his laptop. His eyes widened as he took you both in, standing there half naked, and close enough to hold a feather between you two. “Should I come back or?”

You took a step back and shook your head no. Dean sighed and ran a hand over his face “what is it Sammy?”

“Uh so get this.” He began “ I looked up past references to people losing their voice to a witch and uh.” He chuckled “most of them blamed the little mermaid.”

You and Dean both looked at each other with a wtf face.

“Like the movie?” He said crossing his arms.

“Well more like the princess, or what happened to her. See, in the story the witch took her voice and stored it in a necklace and the only way for her to get it back was to get true loves kiss.”

“So Y/N needs to kiss someone to get her voice back?” Dean said giving you a side eye.

“Not just anyone, her true lo-”

“Yea yea Prince Charming, true love we get it. But how do we find him?”

You and Sam looked at each other before he shook his head “We can’t just hunt down true love, it has to just happen.”

They both looked at you and you shrugged. You didn’t think you had a true love. Sure you liked Dean, a lot, and you always wanted a reason to be around him and whenever he hugged you you felt like nothing felt better and -

“Y/N?” Sam snapped you out of your thoughts “any ideas?”

You quickly shook your head and pointed towards your bathroom.

“Oh yea you do that, we’ll talk later.” Sam said and grabbed Deans arm pulling him out of the room and closing the door. You closed your eyes and let out a sigh ‘Fuck.’

After Sam shut the door Dean snatched his arm away from him, they both made their way to the library in silence.

Dean walked to a table and leaned against it while Sam stood in front of him staring.

“What?” Dean snapped. Sam rolled his eyes “you know exactly what.”

“Sam.” Dean warned but Sam just shook his head and set his laptop on the table.

“No Dean! You know you and Y/N are head over heels for each other. You can help her!”

“Sam I-”

“The way you look at each other, the way you always talk about her. You love her and you know it! You’re meant to help her, you’re her true love!”

“AND WHAT IF IM NOT?!” Dean yelled standing back up “HUH? WHAT IF Y/N DOESNT SEE ME THAT WAY AND IM JUST KIDDING MYSELF?!” He turned his back to Sam and started walking towards the kitchen.

“God you’re so stupid sometimes.” Sam said making Dean freeze.

“What’d you just say?” Dean turned around.

“You heard me. How can you be so stupid to not see that Y/N loves you?”
Sam said voice raising in anger.

“BECAUSE SHE DOESNT!” Dean yelled again face turning red.

“Yes she does!”

Dean froze, and so did time. He opened and closed his mouth not knowing what to say. He finally shook his head “But-”

“Dean listen.” Sam said taking a step forward “she told me a while ago, but didn’t want me to tell you because she thought that you only saw her as a friend.” He put his hand on Deans shoulder “she loves you Dean, now all you gotta do is show her you love her too.”

Dean nodded and looked down the hall to where your room was 'ok Princess, let’s get your voice back.’

You turned off the harsh shower and stepped out. You’d thought you heard yelling coming from down the hall but when you cracked open your door everything was silent.

You quickly threw on a sweatshirt and leggings before making your way to the library. Which to your surprise was empty. You opened your mouth to call out to the boys but remembered that you needed a voice to do so.

So you walked to the kitchen, Empty.

To Deans room, Empty.

To Sams room, Empty.

Hell you even walked to the garage and saw that the Impala was gone.

Walking back to your room you texted both Sam and Dean asking where they were. Not even a minute later your phone buzzed

Sam: sorry to leave you alone but we had to run and grab some things. We’ll be back soon so don’t go crazy without us ;)

You rolled your eyes and threw your phone into your bed before grabbing your laptop and turning on a movie.

20 minutes rolled by and you heard the roar of the impala roll in. Soon two pairs of heavy feet tromped through the bunker halls and into the library.

You simply turned back to your movie. After 30 minutes you couldn’t concentrate. Things were too quiet, you should’ve heard talking or walking or something. But you just heard silence.

Then your heard music. You paused your movie and listened closer, yea definitely music.

You walked out of your room and followed it as it led you straight to the library. Or what used to be the library?

The lights where off and Christmas lights hung from bookshelves illuminating the room beautifully. Some of the chairs were stacked and pushed aside along with the tables. Sheets where thrown over them creating a huge fort. Your favorite snacks were placed on the table along with a crab plushie. Your mouth hung open as you took it all in, how in the-

“Do you like it?” A nervous voice said behind you making you turn around.

Dean stood there with his hands in his pockets. He had on a shirt now, and changed his jeans for sweat pants.

You nodded and looked around motioning with your hands.

“How?” You nodded “uh you can thank Sam for this, he came up with the idea but I helped set it up.”

You walked towards the fort and looked inside. Blankets and pillows where elegantly laid inside along with a laptop playing music.

Dean stepped up next to you “I thought maybe we could hang out tonight, just me and you.”
You looked around “sams gone.”

You made an 'O’ with your mouth before smiling. This was amazing, and just for you? Dean really was Prince Charming.

Something fell behind you and you turned to see it was a book. You walked towards it and began to put it away just as 'Kiss the girl.’ Began to play.

'Now you see her, sitting there across the way. She don’t got a lot to say but there’s something about her.’

Dean watched as you stood on your tippy toes to put the book away. The way your skin glowed, how soft you looked, and how much he wanted to

'And you don’t know why but you’re dying to try you wanna kiss the girl.’

“Uh Y/N?” Dean said. You turned around to look at him and he froze, you eyes, god those eyes could stop traffic. He suddenly felt self conscious and shook his head “uh nevermind.”

He walked around to the bookshelf where you where and looked at the books with you.

'Yes you want her, look at her you know you do.’

He glanced at you

'Possible she wants you to there is one way to ask her. It don’t take a word not a single word go on and kiss the girl.’

He reached to put his hand on your hip when you suddenly moved away. You walked towards the snacks and Dean slowly placed his hand back in his pocket.

'Sha-la-la-la-la-la my oh my look like the boy to shy, he ain’t gonna kiss the girl. Sha-la-la-la-la-la ain’t that sad? Ain’t it a shame? Too bad he gonna miss the girl.’

“So Y/N.” You looked up at him with a mouth full of snacks. He laughed before walking towards you “you got a little something, here let me.”

He wiped the crumbs off your face and you swallowed and smiled. “So back at the earlier, I never got to finish what I wanted to say to you.” You cocked your eyebrow

“I -” his phone buzzed in his pocket and he rolled his eyes. Holding up a finger to you he quickly checked his phone

Sam: Did you do it?

When he looked back up you where walking around the room swaying to the melody of the music.

'Nows your moment, boy you better do it soon. Floating in a blue lagoon no time will be better.’

He walked up behind you and placed a hand on your hip before softly grabbing your other. “Do you uh wanna dance?”

You smiled and nodded as you both began to sway and turn to the music.

'She don’t say a word and she won’t say a word until ya kiss the girl.’

He twirled you and brought you back closely to his chest. You were both smiling brightly now. Looking at one another like there was nothing else in the world.

He stepped on your foot and you winced “oh oh sorry!” He reached down to caress your foot and you let out a silent laugh.

You gently stepped both your feet onto his and this time he moved for the both of you.

'Sha-la-la-la-la-la don’t be scared you got the mood prepared go on and kiss the girl! Sha-la-la-la-la-la don’t stop now, don’t try and hide it how you wanna kiss the girl.’

You were both spinning now and laughing together. His hand gripped you so you wouldn’t fly off of him and your hand caressed his neck.

'Sha-la-la-la-la-la float along and listen to this song, bong say kiss the girl! Sha-la-la-la-la-la music play, do what the music say you gotta kiss the girl.’

Suddenly his feet slipped from under you and you both were on the floor. You were on top of him so he broke your fall. He groaned and smiled nervously before opening his eyes and seeing how close you both were.

The music in the background faded as his hand came up and caressed your cheek. You leaned in and closed your eyes, feeling the rapid beating of deans heart below you.

'Kiss the girl.’

Your lips met his and it’s like you could feel air being forced into your lungs. Your kiss deepened and his hands tangled into your hair. After a while he pulled away and searched your eyes

“I love you.” You both said at the same time.

You Are My Sunshine

Hunter’s POV
She was curled up in the recliner sound asleep. I didn’t blame her. It had been a long couple of days. She amazed me through it all. After the sleepless nights and visitors and constantly entertaining our friends and family who wanted to see our new bundle of joy, she held herself well. She never seemed exhausted or in pain. She never wanted a break.
As soon as the last of our family had left it she was out like a light, our daughter also sound asleep in her baby carrier next to the chair.
I glanced at the time and it was nearing 11pm. The living room was a mess with the left over cups, plates, and scattered seating from the guests who has been coming and going all day long.
I covered her with a blanket and began picking up the garbage around the room. I gathered a good handful of plates with I accidently kicked the carrier and Claire made the beginning sounds of what would be some very loud crying.
I quickly set the garbage down on the coffee table and knelt down next to her and began to rock and hush her to keep from waking her mother.
She continued with the sounds of a rude awakening and I pulled her from the carrier into my arms. I knelt there gently bouncing her as she adjusted to consciousness.
“Shhhhhh. I’m sorry baby girl.” I whispered to her as I rocked her. She calmed down but remained wide-awake.
It was in this moment that it really hit me. That I was a dad. I was HER dad. That she was mine and that she would be the same person I’d teach to ride a bike, play dress up with, have tea parties with, get rid of monsters for, send off to college, and give away one day. I was holding my life. For the past three days, and the last nine months for that matter, I had known this. I had accepted the congratulations and I had accepted my new title. But I never really knew what being a dad meant until this moment where I was all she needed. She stared up at me with her mommas eyes and I finally saw her. In the three days that she’d blessed the world with her presence, this was the first real time I’d held her and gotten to really see her. Shed been, in the nursery, feeding, sleeping, or being held by anyone but me.
She was beautiful. Her eyes were huge and her lips were tights. She looked like she was thinking very hard which she probably got from me. She had the smallest bit of brown hair on the top of her head and her skin was soft.
I glanced up at her mom and she was still sound a sleep. I carefully rose from my knees and stood, careful not to jostle Claire. She continued to look up at me with wide eyes as if I were the most interesting thing she’d ever seen.
I walked her quietly to the kitchen where we weren’t in danger of waking her mother.
“Hey honey,” I smiled at her, “I’m your daddy!” I couldn’t help but get a little tear in my eye after I said that.
“I’m sure from the past couple days you’ve already figured out you’re gonna have a crazy family.” I whispered and laughed to her, “But don’t worry, you’ll like them. Grandma and Grandpa are going to give you so many toys…”
“Your Uncles….” I said thinking of how the guys had sent her into a screaming frenzy earlier when Matt was trying to hand her to Sam, “Well… they’re cool… I swear. They just love you a lot.” I laughed.
I held her in one hand as I used the other to turn on the keurig and search for the k-cup I wanted.
She continued to silently watch me, occasionally moving her arms and kicking her legs.
“Now get used to this, cause I’m gonna need to drink a lot of coffee to be able to keep up with you. You’re only 3 days old and you’re already so big!” I smiled at her and she opened her mouth like she wanted to talk. I opened the keurig and put my coffee in and moved my favorite mug into place as it began to brew.
I moved over to the Islands stool and leaned against it so I could hold her better.
“You mommy loves you sooooo much too. She never lets you out of her sight!” She kicked her legs like she knew exactly who I was talking about, “I know! You love your mommy too! But you gotta be good for her, okay? She doesn’t always knows when she’s getting tired so you gotta be good.”
I took a deep breath, “Especially when I’m not here.” Now that I had her in my arms I never wanted to let her go. I never thought I’d love anything more than going on tour, yet I was holding it in my arms. Everything was so simple now yet so complicated. “Theres going to be times when daddy’s gotta go work… I don’t know how long, but you gotta be good for mommy and grandma… you gotta help em out ok, princess?” She was holding both her fists up to her mouth but her gaze held mine. I couldn’t help but feel closure that she knew what I was saying.
“You are my sunshine,” I started to sing, “My only sunshine, you make me happy when sky’s are grey. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” Half way through the verse she made what I couldn’t call anything but a smile. It had to be a smile. I had sung this to her before, multiple times before bed in the last nine months. This smile said it all. It was as if in a world of firsts, she knew this one. This was familiar to her. And she decided to give her first smile to her daddy.
I couldn’t hold back my smile as I gently kissed her soft forehead and looked down at my baby girl.
