Hi! I've read many of your posts and they're awesome! Think of this one! If the Dragon Riders were in a Modern AU what would be their hobbies? What kind of animals will their dragons be?
Thank you so much!
There have been lots of different interesting modern AUs whereby the dragons have become cats, dogs, or even horses. There’s some good appeal to each idea. Personally, I wouldn’t mind making the dragons based upon the creatures they were designed from; so, Toothless would be a cat, Stormfly a bird, Meatlug a dog, and… I guess Barf and Belch would be a snake and Hookfang a lizard or something.
Now for hobbies…
Hiccup is the inventive powerhouse of Berk. In a modern AU, Hiccup would likely be just as revolutionary - and the area where our greatest technological development is currently… is computers. I can easily imagine Hiccup as someone who constantly fiddles around with both computer hardware and software. He’s built his own machines. He knows how to program in multiple languages. I like to imagine modern!Hiccup as a techie who spends a lot of his hobby free time playing around with computers.
If we want, we could also suggest that Hiccup has other hobbies in other areas of invention and creating. Maybe Hiccup is decent at fixing cars, too, or at the very least knows the basics. Maybe he’s taken a woodworking class in high school. His high school physics projects were possibly a little over the top. If Hiccup enters any club at his high school, it’s the robotics club.
Another significant area of hobbies for Hiccup is going to be the arts. Hiccup is canonically a talented artist in the DreamWorks franchise. There’s no reason why Hiccup wouldn’t enjoy sketching and drawing in the modern world, too. His preferred art style is probably realism, with an emphasis of making the image more photorealistic as versus developing a recognizable artistic style. He’s probably drawn a lot on paper, but given as he loves the latest technology, does a bit with digital art, too.
I don’t think Hiccup would have gotten into sports. Stoick might have tried to put his kid into a few sports when he was younger, and maybe Hiccup tried some other sports on his own volition in the desperate attempt to appear “cool.” No success. Hiccup would not be an athlete growing up. The one potential area of exception is equestrian sports. Even if I do like Toothless as a cat best, there’s still something fun to be said about Hiccup having an ability to ride an animal extremely well in a modern AU. Hiccup could be quite talented riding horses, capable of competing in every event from jumping to dressage.
Astrid, unlike Hiccup, is an accomplished athlete. She tried soccer/football at a young age and was pretty good at it. She stuck with it for a number of years until she switched to rugby. On top of that, Astrid has trained as a gymnast since she was very young, and also tried her hand at several martial arts. Even for sports she has not officially competed in, she still manages to perform impressively. She steals the day for informal volley ball matches she has with friends, and everyone wants her on their team for ultimate frisbee. Heck, she’s probably wrestled some of her friends to the ground on random occasions, too.
Astrid spends so much time on her academics and competitive sports that she doesn’t have too many hobbies outside of these. She’s never had the time and attention to develop her cooking skills, though on the rare occasion she tries to make eggnog, everyone in the family runs frantically away.
Snotlout in the DreamWorks franchise seems to be accomplished with the needle. Maybe this translates to a modern world, too; Snotlout actually knows how to cross-stitch and work a sewing machine and knit scarves (which he always claims are made by his aunt, not him).
Snotlout also mentions working out in the first HTTYD movie. I bet Snotlout loves going to the gym to lift weights and tone his hot body several times a week. He’s probably not that talented at actual team sports (despite trying to sign up and show off on a few of the most popular sports), but he can make up for his embarrassing year of football by lifting impressively at the gym. Well, he thinks it’s impressive, anyway. And it’s not bad. Though… Astrid can outlift him.
DreamWorks’ biggest nerd will be a nerd in the modern world, too. To be honest, Fishlegs’ hobbies are really easy for me to imagine!
Fishlegs plays Magic: The Gathering and has even been to a few local tournaments. He knows all the ins-and-outs of the game, the most expensive cards, the best tactics, you name it. You get him started talking about MTG… and he won’t shut up for another few hours. He’s also a huge video game lover and can be seen on the PC or console several hours a day. Especially, he’s obsessed with League of Legends.
Fishlegs enjoys watching nerd culture movies and knows a decent amount of comic book material. He’ll watch superhero movies and get into debates about which hero would beat who in what sort of competition. You’ll find him at the occasional local comic or sci-fi convention. Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Teen Titans… he’s enjoyed them all.
In high school, Fishlegs enjoyed a few academic competitions, especially in the sciences. I am sure he’s participated in both Science Bowl and Science Olympiad. He’s probably gotten a few medals from Science Olympiad at both the regionals and state level… maybe even making it to the national competition.
It’s also fairly easy for me to see Fishlegs as a band geek and/or orch dork.
Tuffnut also seems to know a bit about needlework given comments in RTTE. He also seems to like interior decorating and other such things. Perhaps in the modern world Tuffnut has a good eye for fabric and tailorsmanship, too. I’m going to suggest this not so much because it’s in his character but because it’s amusing to consider: but Tuffnut making cosplay. That could be entertaining. Or maybe it’s just unusually elaborate Halloween costumes? It’s a holiday he and Ruffnut get a little too engrossed in.
I don’t imagine Tuffnut being involved in too many activities, especially not formal clubs or extracurriculars. However, there’s one exception: theatre. Tuffnut adores theatre, and I’m sure he’s auditioned for a few roles at his local high school. Even when it’s just English class and the teacher assigns the students into groups to act out a Shakespeare scene, Tuffnut gets… overdramatic and involved.
It’s not exactly a “hobby” but I’m sure that Ruffnut and Tuffnut spent many hours together enacting pranks at school.
If Tuffnut got involved in a sport, it’d be figure skating. He’d go for the figure skating; Ruffnut would go for the hockey.
Like Astrid, I could also imagine Ruffnut as a rugby player. Ruffnut is fierce, downright fierce, at the sport. There’s no fear. There are times that Ruffnut gets irritated and jealous that her teammate Astrid receives a lot of the credit - Astrid is a bit more popular than Ruffnut - but Ruff’s coach is fully aware of how bold and dedicated a player the Thorston twin is.
When Ruffnut enters college, she finds herself participating in some extreme experiences. She’s gone bungee jumping and skydiving multiple times and has greatly enjoyed both experiences.
“I swear you only actually drag your ass over here when Ashton gets back.” Y/BFF/N said over her shoulder as she walked into the kitchen in her house. I laughed dropping my sleepover bag in the foyer.
“I can’t be blamed. Your brother is hot.” I said laughing more as I hopped into a bar stool.
“He thinks you are too. God, it’s infuriating.” She said handing me a bottle of coke.
“Y/BFF/N! You have swim practice!” I heard her mom screaming and I laughed.
“Fuck, can you just stay here for a couple hours? I’ll be back.” She said hurried running back toward the front of your house.
“Sure, Ashton can just entertain me!” I called after her. She flipped me the bird as she grabbed her swim bag running after her mom.
“Why am I entertaining you?” Ashton said walking in from the back yard, wiping the pool water from his face.
“Y/BFF/N just left for swim but I’m hanging out. Someone needs to entertain me.” I said taking a gulp from the coke bottle drinking in more of Ashton’s abs than the coke.
“Aren’t you eighteen? Entertain yourself.” Ashton said with a twinkle in his eyes.
“How do you suggest I do that?” I said leaning over the counter toward him raising an eyebrow.
“Join me in the hot tub after you get on a suit.” He said laughing reaching out and taking a swig of my coke.
“It’s a date.” I said whirling around and grabbing my bag before running up to my friend’s room. I hurriedly tugged my bikini on before I twisted my hair into a messy bun. That teaks so much effort. I took a towel from the bathroom before making my way back downstairs to the hot tub next to the pool in the backyard. Ashton was sitting in the tub, the bubbles on, with his head tilted back and his eyes closed as he listened to the radio.
“Hey,” He said lazily sitting up as I slipped into the water near him but not quite next to him.
“Hi,” I said with a small smile. Suddenly I felt nervous. Here I was, alone in a hot tub with my friend’s hot brother that I had a crush on since boys stopped being gross to me.
“Nice suit.” Ashton said his eyes glancing down to my chest, languidly taking their time before they returned to looking into mine. I found it hard to breathe either from the hot water or Ashton. Probably Ashton.
“Thanks. I got it this year…” I said nervously adjusting the straps a bit. I heard him clear his throat so I looked up at him. He looked uncomfortable. “What?”
“Don’t do that.” He said in a strained voice.
“Oh uh, why?” I said dropping my hands into the water my heart racing.
“It’s… Turning me on…” He struggled to admit.
“Oh, then I probably shouldn’t stop doing that.” I said my tone shifting to teasing.
“I never pegged you for a tease.” He grumbled his eyes locked on watching.
“I can be a tease.” I said lightly. I felt the water move as he slid closer to me on the bench in the hot tub.
“They say you shouldn’t tease people.” He said in a low voice leaning closer to me. His arm was draped behind me on the edge of the hot tub.
“They also say you shouldn’t give people chest pains.” I countered hoping to be sassy but my voice was too weak.
“So, I give you chest pains?” Ashton whispered leaning closer. His lips had to only be a couple inches apart as his nose brushed over mine.
“You uh…” I couldn’t seem to form a sentence and he smirked, moving closer.
“Finally… I love when you get tongue tied around me, just like I get…” He murmured before I felt his arm dropping from the edge to drape over my own bare back. One more millisecond and his lips had finally met mine like all the dreams I had in his sister’s room late at night, wondering about boys, and then all my older dreams as I too got older. The guy I’d liked for years was finally kissing me. I was so happy I met him as my best friend’s brother.
“How come you’re so easy to convince to come to my brother’s football games?” My best friend asked as we were laying down on the hill near the soccer field to watch the games. We’d set up a blanket to rest on. I was fixed on watching Calum move on the field until she spoke.
“Maybe I just like soccer.” I countered turning back to look at her.
“You make a stink eye watching it on TV.” She said right back.
“I uh don’t like those teams.”
“You like Calum.” She said bluntly.
“…That transparent huh?” I said softly glancing back at her brother celebrating a goal with his teammates. I loved his chocolate brown eyes, his fluffy chocolate hair, his tanned skin, his full lips, his smile… Basically I loved the whole freaking package but he was my best friend’s brother.
“Not like I’ve known you forever or anything.” She said laughing leaning closer to me.
“What?” I said a little uncomfortable of the sudden closeness of my friend’s face.
“He stares at you like you stare at him sometimes.” She said in a low voice. “Of course I’m not supposed to know my brother likes my best friend…” She said leaning back with a coy smile.
“He doesn’t. I’m younger and he’s so… hot and I’m so… well not.” I said waving my hand as if to put the labels on our heads.
“I think you’re hot. He always gets happy around you too.” She said glancing down at him pointedly.
“What?” I said looking down at the field.
“He’s coming up.” She said laughing. My heart stopped.
“Hey sis! We won!” He cheered animatedly running up his water bottle in his hands.
“Congratulations!” My friend said with a big smile.
“You looked good out there.” I added energetically.
“Thanks Y/N, you staying the night with us like usual?” Cal said squatting next to me. I felt his hand drop to my upper back. Warmth spread through my body as I felt my cheeks begin to blush.
“Planning to.” I said with a smile. He beamed at me.
“I’m thinking you and I should celebrate together.” Cal said with a wink.
“Get a room.” My friend cat called.
“We could, you spend the night in my room.” Calum said with another big smile.
“Wait…” I stammered. He laughed.
“Kidding, but I still might steal you away.” He said with another wink before jogging back down to his team.
“He wants to bone you.” My friend sang out loud repeatedly as we folded the blanket. Later at their house, I was just coming out of the bathroom when I was faced with Cal in the hall and he seemed less confident than he had on the field coming off of the high from winning a game.
“Hi.” He said scratching back of his head.
“Hey…. You really did look incredible out there today.” I said with a soft smile. It occurred to me I was in my sleep clothes and with the heat that only meant I had on a thin strap tank top and girl boxers over my underwear. He could probably see most of my skin.
“I always like it, and work harder, when you come to my games.” He said in a quiet voice not looking at me.
“What do you mean?” I said slowly.
“I mean… I want to impress you because I like you and it pushes me harder when you’re there…” He confessed only meeting my eyes when he had finished speaking.
“You know I am your sister’s best friend though?” I whispered.
“And she wants you two to have kissing and fun together tonight while she runs off with her boyfriend.” My best friend said suddenly popping up. She handed Calum my sleepover stuff and winked at me.
“What the hell?” Calum said to his sister.
“What? I want to go bone my boyfriend and you two want to bone each other so hop to it.” She said waving us toward his room. “At the very least, finally fucking kissing each other and leave me in peace to enjoy my boyfriend. Loves.” She said waving as she disappeared.
“Well… Maybe sex would rush it, but she is not wrong when she says I want to kiss you.” He said a little pink in the face.
“That sounds good to me.” I whispered slowly following him into his room. Who would have thought, my best friend’s brother.
“You come over and all you want to do is eat pizza and play video games.” My best friend sighed as I parked my ass on their couch picking up one of their controllers.
“So?” I said also picking up a slice of pepperoni pizza.
“I already have one Michael. I don’t need two.” She sighed heavily before resigning herself to go along with me.
“I wear skirts and make up and do not dye my hair the whole colors of the rainbow.” I said and she rolled her eyes.
“Inside you are a teenage boy.”
“Just because I make dirty jokes and like video games and pizza…” I countered laughing.
“I hate you sometimes.” She sighed lifting herself up off the couch. “I’m going to do homework.” She said going to the stairs.
“How’d I end up with such a lame sister?” Michael said loudly coming down from his room.
“I got brains and you got the stupid.” She countered just continuing on up.
“Hey Y/N, only here to use the xBox again?” Michael said throwing himself on the couch beside me already taking a slice of the pizza in his hands. I tried to quell my racing heart. Truth be told, I became like this when I got my crush on Michael, my own best friend’s brother. I wanted him to like me and I was deep in it for him it was so easy to just enjoy the things he liked.
“You know it, want to play me?” I asked handing him the second controller.
“Loser gets to answer the winner’s question.” Michael said setting the rules. We usually did that. Loser has to feed the other pizza. Loser has to say a dirty joke to my friend. Loser has to sit upside down until next game is over and so on.
“Fine.” I said settling in to play. Michael still easily beat me.
“Who do you like?” He said looking at me calmly.
“I uh… I can’t tell you that.” I said looking down blushing.
“Why?” He said leaning closer to me. “And why are you blushing?” Because you’re trying to make me tell you my crush when you are my crush and I am embarrassed I wanted to scream at him but my lips were closed tight. “Y/N, you can tell me. I just really want to know.” His tone was different than anything I had ever heard him use before and it prompted me to look up. He was looking at me seriously.
He looked serious.
I’d never seen him look serious.
Be still my beating heart.
“Please… I just want to know…” Michael continued his hands dropping down to hold my comfortingly.
“I uh… Why do you care?” I finally whispered looking into his light eyes.
“I want to know if I have a chance.” He confessed not wavering from staring deep into my eyes. If there was a moment my heart would have stopped it would have been that moment.
“You are my crush.” I finally whispered in the heavy tension between us.
“So, that means when we play video games, we can share the same pizza, play games and loser kisses the winner, I’m always allowed to cuddle you and I can hold your hand and kiss you, right?” He said moving his hands to interlock our fingers together. I nodded slowly.
“I want that…” I whispered and he smiled coming closer to me.
“Can I start with kissing you now?” He said raising our hands together to run his thumb over my lips. I nodded slowly. I didn’t have to wait long for the moment I had been waiting for years for, the moment our lips finally met. The moment we first kissed. Him. My best friend’s brother.
I was slipping out of my best friend’s bedroom from a sleepover. It had been an emergency sleepover of course, she had another problem with her boyfriend. As the friend of sound mind I was called to fix it. To cure her of her problems with him. They were on the phone together now. Despite being the girl that seemed to be able to cure everyone else, I couldn’t cure myself of my crush on Luke, my best friend’s brother. I tiptoed down the stairs hoping I had left my notebook down there. It was full of my poems and stories and I had forgotten it while I was fixing my friend’s relationship.
Then I walked right into someone.
“Sorry.” Luke said moving to let me by. I was frozen staring up at his gorgeous face as my whole body began to blush. Yes, that is completely possible.
“It’s ok. Have you seen my notebook?” I asked and he moved his hand from behind his back. He had the notebook in his hands.
“It was on the coffee table. It had your name on it.” He said looking downwards as if he couldn’t meet my eyes.
“Thanks. You didn’t read it, right?” I said and he shook his head.
“It’s private. Not something I have the right to read.” He shrugged.
“Oh ok, thanks.”
“So why are you down here and not in my sister’s room?” He asked twisting his fingers together as we talked.
“She’s talking to her boyfriend. I figured they should have privacy. I came down here to write in my notebook until she was done.” “You can come to my room.” Luke said shyly.
“I don’t have a no girls allowed sign you know. Feel free to knock whenever.” He shrugged walking ahead of me toward his room upstairs and I followed him up the stairs.
“I like your room.” I commented as he moved to move all the scattered clothes into a pile.
“It’s small and a mess and mom moved the play station.” Luke muttered. “Sit wherever.” He said gesturing around. I just sat on the edge of his bed and he sat on the bed with me.
“It’s you.” I said looking around at the guitars in the corners and the posters on the walls to the scattered papers. I bent to pick up the closest one thinking it was homework but it was something written in Luke’s scrawl.
“Don’t!” He cried going to snatch it from me. I let him take it without getting so much as a peek.
“What?” I said quietly holding my notebook on my lap.
“It’s just personal. I don’t think you should read it.” He said turning a pinch pink.
“Why?” I asked in the same quiet voice.
“I wrote those lyrics about a girl… But they’re stupid.” He said shaking his head and crumpling the paper.
“I could help. I write poetry you know.” I said gently slowly reaching for it.
“Please don’t.” He said with a desperate plea in his quiet voice.
“OK.” I said retracting my hand.
“What do you write about?” He asked suddenly.
“The guy I like.” I answered simply.
“Oh, who is it?” He asked nonchalantly as he shifted on the bed too look at me better.
“Or you can’t tell me.” He said looking down.
“Here. Let’s both write our crushes on pieces of paper and hand them to each other.” He said and I nodded ripping a sheet in my notebook. He handed me a pen and I wrote ‘you’ on it.
“Here.” I said slipping it to him. He slipped me his. On it was the same word I’d written.
“No way…” He breathed next to me while I just tried to calm my heart.
“Luke…” I said slowly and he turned to me.
“Y/N…” He said cupping my cheek in his hand as he leaned in. His lips finally met mine if only for a moment before he pulled away.
“I’ve wanted to do that forever.” He whispered with a chuckle. I giggled too reaching out to finally touch him the way I wanted to. “Can I do it again?” He whispered sucking his lip into his mouth. Needless to say, I nodded.

“Kiddo, you’re too far. You won’t catch it from there”
Dean had to stifle a laugh. The determination on your little, round face was something not even he could mess with. “Alright, then. Just remember to keep your eyes on the ball, and stretch your arms, Y/N”, Dean motioned you, “How are you going to catch the ball if you have them glued to your side?”
You did as Dean instructed you and waited for him to make the pass, “Ok, I’m ready!”.
Dean threw you an easy pass so that you wouldn’t have to move far from where you were standing. You caught the football in the air and ran forward as fast as your legs could carry you till you slammed into Dean, using your head and hands.
“Y/N, what..what are you doing?”, he chuckled.
“I’m…tackling…you”, you puffed, pushing and shoving him to no avail.
“Right”, Dean said, “Man down!”, he suddenly shouted, falling dramatically to the ground. He then opened one eye to see you, cheering and jumping around him screaming “Touchdown!”
-Imagine this… you’re new in town and you’re just a normal girl with no friends yet. Except for your cat… and your neighbor, he came yesterday to give your family a welcome, and you think he is really cute, how was his name? oh, Jack gillinsky!-
What an awful day has this been. Being the new girl isn’t easy, specially if you’re new in town too. Anyone neither nuisance in saying Hi, or nice dress!, nope, ignored all day long. Now I’m sitting in a bench, waiting for my brother to give me a lift home. Suddenly, I see my neighbor, Jack, with a lot of (what I suppose they are) popular guys, wearing the football team jacket. He looks really hot in that, and he’s laughing, so that makes him the most handsome in there. I realized I was staring at him, so I look to the street, and when I turn arround, I see him walking towards me. I get nervous and the only thing that hit upon to do is smile to the ground. “Hey, Y/N” he says, and I sigh, kind of leaving all this nervousness. “Hi, jack, right?” I anwser, as if I didn’t remember all right, but, i could never forget his name. “Yeah, haha, by the way, how was your first day as the new student?” He tells. “Crapy” I respond, “I spent all day by myself” He must think I’m a weirdo. “Hey Y/N, don’t worry,” He says as he takes a tuft of hair out of my face and puts it behind my ear "If you’re alone, you can hang out with us, and maybe I can introduce you to some girls, so you can be friends" Jack says, gently. “Thank you, jack. You’re really sweet” I tell him. “Yeah, most of the girls say that, but most of them aren’t my new neighbor, see you later” Says jack, then he turns arround and a sport car full with cheerleaders and football players is waiting for him. He kisses my cheek softly and then I barely say “See you…” when he starts running to the car and jumps in. I touch my cheek gently, as if I could sink that kiss and leave it in my skin forever. When the car is so far away that I can’t see it anymore, my brothers car arrives. “Come in, dwarf” He shouts to me “Coming…” I say as I walk unto the door and open it. “How was it” My brother says. He’s 6 years older than me, so he has already finished school. “Fine. I don’t wanna talk about it, and thanks” I say, cutting the conversation. When we get home. I run upstairs and lock the door of my bedroom. I open the curtain, and there he was, laying on the bed, with the music so high that I can hear it and throwing a football to the air and catching it up. He’s listening to my favourite band, so I play the same music out loud to call his attention. Then I sit on my bed and grab my diary, starting to write all that has happened in this long hole day. I see him standing up and walking toward the window, he opens the curtain and watches me for a couple of seconds. I do the same. Then I write in a new page on my diary with big letters “I’m sooo bored :(”. I get closer to the window and I show it up. He smiles and gets out the window. Then he appears with a big sign that says “Me too, waht should we do?”. I smile and then I write “Idk, maybe nothing”. I show the sign and he writes something in a paper and does gestures, showing me to open up the window. I open it up and he throws me the piece of paper. I unfold it and the phrase “Maybe we should grab a coffee” it’s written on it. I smile as I read it again a couple of times, and he shouts me “What do you say?”, “Sounds great” I respond. “Let’s get out of here” he says, as he grab his football team jacket and points the door. I laugh a bit and copy his past actions, getting out of my bedroom. ps: it’s based on Taylor Swift’s “You belong with me” ps2: i think i want to do it a second part -June grey

A/N: i hate you I had no other title for this either
You sat in the back of your last period English class absentmindedly doodling pictures on your notebook while you teacher was on another lecture about poetry. It’s not that you didn’t pay attention in class, it’s just that you already knew everything your teacher was ranting about. Your teacher began asking questions haiku’s and as always, Ashton Irwin’s hand was already first in the air. He began explaining the structure of haiku’s while the captain of the football team began snickering comments beside you about Ashton.
“He’s such a nerd. Who cares about what a haki is? No wonder he can’t get any,” Jake whispered to his friend.
“Hey, Jake, first of all it’s called a haiku, and second of all, I happen to have a date with that ‘nerd’ this weekend,” you said in a harsh tone.
“You don’t have to defend the dweeb, babe,” he said cheekily. Jake walked around the school acting like he owned every girl, so it wasn’t uncommon for him to call you pet names.
“Oh please, he gets more from me in a week than you’ve gotten this whole year. And may I say he’s a lot bigger than your ego,” you said smirking at him. Jake was at a loss for words and the whole class’s attention was focused on you, although your teacher hadn’t heard what the conversation was. Everyone was chuckling and staring at Ashton who had his head down.
“Calm down,” your teacher began to say, but the bell ringing had cut him off.
“Irwin’s getting it in with Y/N, oh shit,” someone had yelled at the end of class. Ashton was receiving pats on the back and encouraging comments.
Everyone had filed out of the hallways, leaving you and Ashton standing alone near his locker.
“Listen, Ashton, I’m sorry for what I said back in class. I didn’t mean to embarrass you. I just wanted Jake to leave you alone,” you profusely apologized.
“Thank you Y/N, for defending me. See you around,” he said quietly, shutting his locker and walking away.
“Wait Ashton!” you yelled through the hallways as you ran to catch up with him.
He stopped in his tracks and turned around to face you. You always thought he was really cute, but no one ever gave him the time of day. He was a sweet guy, which made him an easy target for the football team.
“Do you want to go to a movie with me this weekend?” you asked.
“You don’t have to make a cover story, Y/N, I can just say it happened, or I can tell everyone the truth,” Ashton said quickly.
“No, I mean it. I want to go on a date with you, I think you’re cute,” you stated as a red blush began forming on his cheeks.
“Uh, I- sure,” he said.
“Really?” you asked.
“I think you’re cute too, so I’ll just have to work in extra studying on Sunday because of the date because we have a big test coming up next week and- ,” Ashton began rambling.
“Ashton,” you said cutting him off.
“Sorry,” he blushed.
“It’s fine. Pick me up at 8 on Saturday?” you asked pecking his cheek as you slipped a paper with your address and number in his hand.
“Yeah, I-I’ll be t-there,” he choked out as you turned and walked away.
49ers LB Chris Borland retires from NFL due to fear of brain injury
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” on Monday that he has decided to walk away from the game after just one season in the league because of concerns about the long-term effects of repetitive head trauma.
The 24-year-old Borland doesn’t feel the game is worth the risk anymore.
“I just honestly want to do what’s best for my health,” Borland told “OTL.” “From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk.
Borland, a fourth-round pick out of Wisconsin, had a very successful rookie season in San Francisco. He led the 49ers with 107 tackles and finished with one sack and two interceptions in 14 games. He finished fourth out of 60 qualified inside linebackers in Pro Football Focus’ grading system.
I feel largely the same, as sharp as I’ve ever been, for me it’s wanting to be proactive,” said Borland. “I’m concerned that if you wait till you have symptoms, it’s too late. … There are a lot of unknowns. I can’t claim that X will happen. I just want to live a long healthy life, and I don’t want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise.”
Borland said it wasn’t easy to decide to call it quits, but examples of some of the games past stars help him make the decision.
“I’ve thought about what I could accomplish in football, but for me personally, when you read about Mike Webster and Dave Duerson and Ray Easterling, you read all these stories and to be the type of player I want to be in football, I think I’d have to take on some risks that as a person I don’t want to take on,” Borland said.
Borland said he believed he suffered a concussion in training camp, but he played through it because he wanted to make the team. As the season progressed, he became more concerned about the issue.
He said the issue “gathered steam” as the season progressed. Before the fourth game of the pre-season, at Houston, he wrote a letter to his parents, informing them that he thought that his career in the NFL would be brief because of his concerns about the potential long-term effects of the head injuries.
After the season, Borland said, he consulted with prominent concussion researchers and former players to affirm his decision. He also scheduled baseline tests to monitor his neurological wellbeing going forward “and contribute to the greater research.” After thinking through the potential repercussions, Borland said the decision was ultimately “simple.”
Borland’s decision to retire comes less than a week after former 49ers All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis announced his retirement from the league at the age of 30 due to a toe injury.
Borland was expected to replace Willis and be a key part of the 49ers defense this season
Willis’ retirement had no role in his decision, Borland said.
