When I can't find the words, you teach my heart to speak
That scene. That kiss. It gives me chills, I rewatched it a thousand times already and I won’t stop. Because there’s SO MUCH in those few minutes. Two hearts uncovering each other and one of them is ready to die for love: love for his city, but mostly for a woman, a woman he had never expected, who caught him by surprise and got under his skin. Benvolio says to Rosaline to be happy with another man because he thinks he doesn’t deserve her love and who knows, maybe that he could never measure up to her. But while they’re talking in the dungeon, he doesn’t realize that she’s already his, in such a deep level: she can’t be happy without him, not anymore. They call each other friends, friends who trust one another and that’s such a beautiful thing, often underrated when, on the contrary, it should be the foundation of every relationship. For them this is the first step towards something more and they realize it in this moment, they confess it to each other just when everything seems over, hopeless.
And then the kiss. A desperate kiss, thisting for love and life - the life that’s running out for him . It’s just like donating that same life reciprocally, in a last breath, telling each other things that can’t be express in words. Benvolio almost can’t believe that she’s real and there for him, that he can touch her, kiss her like his most beautiful treasure - and that she feels for him. The love that he had never imagined for himself, coming from her. Rosaline doesn’t go anywhere because there’s no other place she’d rather be in that moment.
I thought also at this One Tree Hill quote, fom 2x16. I think it fits them so well, especially the road that awaits them:
“Remember tonight, for it is the beginning of always. A promise. Like a reward for persisting through life so long alone. A belief in each other and the possibility of love. A decision to ignore, simply rise above the pain of the past. A covenant, which at once binds two souls and yet severs prior ties. A celebration of the chance taken and the challenge that lies ahead. For two will always be stronger than one, like a team braced against the tempest civil world. And love will always be the guiding force in our lives. For tonight is mere formality. Only an announcement to the world of feelings long held. Promises made long ago. In the sacred spaces of our hearts.”
