you are the most beautiful thing in the world

and now, a series of quotes from my sociology professor this past term...

“pull out your phones and tell me your most recent emoji, lets make this into a social experiment”

“gotta love old dead white dudes who think they know everything about how the world works, right?”

“maybe i’m just really into cocaine, who knows”

“the estate system is like Westeros. anyone in here who doesn’t get that, watch Game of Thrones, I highly reccommend, but I must warn you there’s a lot of boobs. all tits all the time. gratuitous titties.”

“i know what ‘extra’ means to you guys, i’m old but i’m not dead yet”

“so long story short, get into rich people’s social circles so you can go play polo on their yacht and be pretentious about wine to get ahead in life”

“and by ‘we’ i mean white people; in the past czechoslovakians weren’t considered white, although lauren, you are clearly quite aryan”

“I just want to buy a fucking birthday card, why is everything so overly gendered?”

“can i see your penis? wait no, not like that, that was not a proposition”

(in reference to the types of gendered toys found in happy meals) “what are boy toys? aw, fuck, wait, no…”

“i dunno, is ‘cunt’ really a gender neutral word?”

“wow, you guys really know your white people”

“I’m not giving you a fuckin’ word bank, what is this, high school?”

“anyone have any questions? about the test? or anything? please?”

“i’m not gonna grade your tests i’m just going to throw them down the stairs and whoever lands closest to the top gets an A”

“it’s not spelled ‘kahoot’ with a k, what is this, that’s the kardashian way of spelling shit?”

“is this enjoyable to you? watching me fumble around like an idiot?”

“are me and my partner considered a family? we don’t have kids, we have a dog. we’ve been together 13 years but if we didn’t have a dog we wouldn’t be a family by your standards?”

(”i would assume that a 35 year old would know what they want in a relationship more than a 22 year old”) “yeah, you would fucking hope so!”

“let’s watch Oprah, shall we?”

“Karl Marx is my jam”

“apparently I am a murderer”

“do you even hashtag, bro?”

The Most Beautiful Man In The World, Who Lives In My Building And Only Ever Sees Me When I Look Disgusting

The Most Beautiful Man In The World lives in my building. i don’t know his name. we met on a bus, when i smiled WAY too brightly at him for strangers because, honest to god, my whole heart lit up in a way that made me think, “oh, i must know that guy!!” no. i didn’t. he’s just The Most Beautiful Man In The World.

what does The Most Beautiful Man In The World look like? i will tell you:

  • like the way the sun spills over water at dusk
  • like the way food smells when you’re hungry
  • like the sound angels make when they’re doing folk covers of pop songs on their heavenly harps
  • and also kind of like the guy who played Chad in “high school musical,” if the guy who played Chad in “high school musical” was the most beautiful man in the world.

i tell you this not only to brag that i live in the same apartment complex as The Most Beautiful Man In The World but also because i want to know WHY, if there even IS A GOD, every single time i run into The Most Beautiful Man In The World i look like a LITERAL DUMPSTER TROLL that has just CRAWLED OUT OF ITS GARBAGE HOUSE in search of FREE WIFI AND A SLURPEE. i want to know why i can never just BE COOL with The Most Beautiful Man In The World when we ride the elevator together, which is!!!! kind of often!!!!!

DID YOU GUYS KNOW that sometimes i look nice?? sometimes i actually look like a FUNCTIONING ADULT!!! sometimes i would go so far as to say i am an ATTRACTIVE INDIVIDUAL!!!!!

you know who DOESN’T know any of that???

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN IN THE WORLD, WHO LIVES IN MY BUILDING!!!

here’s a quick rundown of the last few times i ran into The Most Beautiful Man In The World:

  • i was wearing a maxi dress i had very cleverly biked home in, without a helmet* (*don’t try that at home, kids), in the VERY HOT AFTERNOON SUN, so i was a GROSS SWEAT MONSTER but without any OBVIOUS INDICATOR that there was a normal reason for it, and i couldn’t stand to look at him so i just glared at my phone while he probably wondered, alarmed, whether i was fleeing the scene of a crime
  • i was wearing a white shirt that i had not SECONDS before spilled salsa ALL OVER in a big red stain right down the front like a KINDERGARTNER
  • i was carrying two armfuls of ENORMOUS bags of popcorn with a three musketeers bar literally in my mouth and he overheard me say through my stuffed candy cheeks to my doorman, “oh, no, i’m not having a party, this is literally all for me”
  • i dropped my backpack while opening my mail and said to it, defeatedly, “why? why did you do that when i explicitly told you not to? do you like being on the floor?”
  • i fell into and then off of the elevator

why??? why does this happen??? what vengeful god has orchestrated it so the ONLY TIMES i ever run into The Most Beautiful Man In The World are when i could easily be mistaken for a child’s doll that has been put through the wash by accident, or a dollar bill that has been stained by years of being in people’s sweaty palms, or a mop with eyes???

whatever. everything costs money and everyone you love disappoints you. Mop Eyes out.

Signs and Crushes

Aries: Pretty upfront about it, always on the lookout for someone and when they find that perfect someone they cling on. You’ll know if they like you by the measure of inside jokes you have, the amount of touching and eye contact. Pay attention next time their around. Give it some time and eventually they’ll tell you.

Taurus: Timid about it. They’re very fun people and love to just go with you anywhere. Very vexing and charming signs, so they might feel unattainable to you. In nature they doubt themselves, so they might feel the same about you. That being said, they most likely will go to their grave simply crushing on you. Maybe it’s best you make the first move with this sign.

Gemini: Like Taurus, this sign is timid about liking you. They want you to make the first move and tell them you like them. When it comes to crushes, this sign might do the most discreet things like tagging you in a post or remembering your pet’s name. Loves to laugh at memes with you. Wants to take you to new places but doesn’t know how to ask. Very gentle. Probably best you make the first move.

Cancer: Very lovey-dovey. Loves to compliment you in small ways and it might be pretty obvious they like you. Compliment them back, you’ll notice how they blush and smile. Very cute. You might also notice how they want to invite you in with their own friends. It is either-or with this sign when it comes to crushes. Depending on the person, you might want to tell them yourself.

Leo: A very fierce sign. They get what they want because of their strong demeanor. They’ll charm you into their lives and never let you go. When this sign likes you, they’ll be fairly shy at first, but pay attention to body language. Do they laugh a lot? Focus all of their attention on you? Once they’re comfortable with you, they don’t hold anything back.

Virgo: This sign needs to know that you mutually like them. They don’t go off on a limb and assume things. They don’t ask you on a date out of nowhere, even if they do suspect you like them back. They’re a logical sign, and they just need to know that the feelings are reciprocated. Therefore, it might not be that obvious that they have a crush on you. They want to get to know you better and understand your intentions. Once they do, they’ll open up to you and be very obvious when it comes to liking you.

Libra: A truly kind sign. Once you get close enough to them, they’re willing to do anything for that special someone. They love to brag about you to their friends and you might find yourself on their social media frequently. Eventually, they may come around to telling you how they truly feel.

Scorpio: Now you and I both know a Scorpio will tell you, your family, your neighbors, and your friends that they like you. They don’t hold much back. It takes a while to crack that hard shell of theirs, but once you do there is no going back. It might be overbearing at times, but Scorpio only has the best intentions at heart. You know they like you if they put you above anyone else.

Sagittarius: Very withdrawn when it comes to having crushes. They feel like they fail at love and so, when they do have a crush, they hold back completely. They love to laugh with you and adventure with you. Give them some time, and they’ll come around. Do not bombard them by confronting them instantly.

Capricorn: Similar to sagittarius, this sign is very withdrawn. They have a rather passive personality and will play it off as if you’re not much in their life. You might take notice to this. However, they think the world of you. Have some late-night mushy conversations with them and you’ll know they think the world of you. They’re a sweet sign, but they can break your heart in an instant.

Aquarius: This sign is bubbly when they like you. Very kind and smiley. They love the finer things in life and they aren’t afraid of showing you. Beautiful people both inside and out and you definitely don’t want to lose them. They make it obvious when they like you. It’s the little things in life that mean the most of them. So if they show you things like little places around town and beautiful, hidden scenery then you should just know.

Pisces: A reserved sign, or at least they try to be. When it comes to them liking you, honey, you’ll know. Compliments out the wazoo. Tries to make you laugh as much as possible. They always think about you, always. They worry for you, get excited for you, and will love you unconditionally. They have an obsessive personality and when they have a crush on you, all that obsession is pointed to you. They get so scared that they’ll mess up somehow. They make amazing lovers, but they will leave if something feels wrong.

Here is 10 things I tell my students on the first day of class about building yourself up into being a artist. This is starting point, not a all encompassing list. Hope you find it helpful!

1. Never stop experimenting. When you stop trying new things your style will get stagnant. Developing your style never has an stopping point, you’re going to continue learning and changing–that is a good thing.

2. Don’t draw to please a particular person or audience. It is tempting to draw something you think the person viewing it will like. It starts with drawing to please a friend/family member, then a teacher, and then a wider audience online or in person. However, consider drawing to please yourself first, an audience will follow in time and you will face a lot less burn out down the line. You’ll be hired for this, work you made out of something you liked crafting–not something you forced yourself to craft. Don’t make art that makes you miserable.

3. Learn the basics. Get good at anatomy (human and animal), perspective, creating depth, lighting, etc–then break the rules you’ve learned. Work, no matter how abstract, pushed, and pulled is always stronger when informed by a mastery of the basics.

4. Practice working in ways that do not hurt your hand. Learn to draw with a relaxed hand and draw in long strokes. Both of these methods help prevent issues with your hand, wrist, and arm. I’ve never gotten carpal tunnel, and I draw on a daily basis, because I have learned how to treat my hand well. Your hand is your tool, if you wear it out there isn’t a new one you can just pick up. The best treatment for any possible physical issues is prevention.

5. Learn how to draw without erasing. It is scary and it is tough no doubt! However the best way to become more confident is through not erasing. There is a medium for everyone to try this out, whether it is pen or non-erasing colored pencils. If you want to ease yourself into this method try out Pentel red lead, it erases a bit–but overall will always leave a mark with every stroke you make. The importance of this is learning to not be afraid of mistakes.

6. Draw from life, from reference photos, and from imagination. This trio is important, combining all three is usually how you build great drawing skills. Drawing from life gives you the ability to capture small details that you’ll remember to put in when drawing from a reference photo, drawing from refs will give you the practice you’ll need to handle whatever subject so that one day you can draw it from your own imagination–see how that works?

7. You’re art isn’t completely unique and that is okay. I can’t emphasis how many people I know who have gotten so hung up on being something totally unique that they burn out fast and never make work again. Now, considering how much art is in the world there is no way that what you create will be 100% unique to you. That is fine, your personality in your work is more of what makes something yours than a “style”.

8. Figure out your work’s personality. On that note finding the personality of your art is important as you go into trying to build your own place in the art world. The personality of a piece is a combination of style, subject, color, shapes, lines, and maybe most important themes (yes subject and themes are different). This combo is what makes your art special. At a loss for where to start figuring out your own personality? Compile a list of 10 artists you love. Why do you love them? Is it the shapes of one artist that speak to you, the line work of another is beautiful, the themes of a third make you feel inspired? Now take the 10 things you love about those 10 artists and start applying them to your own work. This isn’t about copying these artists, it is about the inspiration. That line work you love in another artist’s piece is gunna look different in yours for example. Those themes from another artist, well when you take them on your life might inform them in a opposite way. In time your inspired work will evolve into something that is your own.

9. Talent is nice, persistence is more important. Someone may be naturally talented in some areas of art, however someone who is persistent in their craft is so much more likely to succeed. Effort, continued growth, and practice will add up to so much more in the long run than just skating by on “talent”.

10. Be a good person. Treat others with respect, learn about social issues, don’t be a creep, and use your art to help people. And this might mean you craft a piece about an important issue that changes thousands of lives, or you might just be creating to help yourself get through the day. Both are important, after all you are a person too and you should always be trying to help and be kind to yourself.

I have always liked my people a bit damaged. A bit rough around the edges. A bit difficult to stereotype. A bit stranger than the normal crowd. I like people whose eyes tell stories and whose smiles have fought through wars. If you’re perfect, chances are, we aren’t going to get on. If you’re one of the cool kids, chances are, you won’t like me. You see, what I want is authentic. What I want to see is your purity, I want to see the way you wear your scars, I want to see how brave you are with your vulnerability, how emotionally naked do you let the world see you. Your damage may not be beautiful, but it has made you exquisite. It makes you original, different - and one of my kind of people because people like you are the most incredible things about this world.
—  Nikita Gill

I grew up thinking that in order to live a happy life, I had to get good grades and go to a prestigious university and get a highly paid job. But as I grew older I began to realise that in order to life a happy life, I had to choose it for myself and not live a life that others expect of me, whether it be your parents, teachers or friends. This is your life.

I made a decision that I didn’t want to be successful and live in a big house with fancy cars in the drive. So, I packed my bags and got out of this little town that had suffocated me for the last 18 years and drank coffee in small shops in Germany, chased the Horizon in Australia, woke up with a mountain view in Singapore. How beautiful is it to know that your feet have walked the grounds of many different countries and your skin has felt the air of many busy cities.

Please darling, do not get lost in society’s belief that you are only successful if you have a well paid job, like I once had. As humans, we are going to die, that is one thing we are guaranteed in life. What will you care about the most while lying on your death bed, your fancy cars, big house? Or the stories and experience you have encountered on the journey of this beautiful thing called life?

So there’s one thing I ask of you: please travel. Whether you’re 21 or 49. It is never too early nor too late so see the beautiful world.

good boys loving boys things:

-sharing all your clothes

-the warm feeling of hearing him say “my boyfriend” and thinking “oh, that’s me”

-accidentally getting the same haircut

-being unafraid to be gentle and soft with each other

-feeling secure and handsome because he looks at you like you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen

-hearing him whisper “im so gay”

-having people call you “friends” and giving each other The Look™

-cuddles

-understanding each other in the midst of a world that doesn’t understand you.

I wish I knew the right words to say when it came down to writing about someone who makes you feel like flowers are growing inside of your chest. I wish I knew how to explain the way you make me feel when it’s two in the morning and we’re both laughing over something that probably wasn’t even that funny but to other people, our laughs make it seem like it was the world. I wish I knew how to tell people just how really beautiful you are, because when you are there, whether you’re laying down or pacing back and fourth, talking about the things that excite you the most, or just about anything in general that makes you happy, your eyes hold a certain kind of light beneath them that makes me want to never look away. Or when you laugh, my god, when you laugh, I never want it to stop because you do this thing where you tilt your head back and cover your mouth at the last moment after you already been so loud, shaking your head and every single time, I’d think, I wouldn’t mind hearing you laugh for the rest of my life. And when you yell, which is very rare, is scary because you can be there, veins standing at attention and I’d still think you’re the most beautiful person I have ever laid eyes on, even if I’m driving you insane. Don’t worry though, you drive me insane too. And I wish I knew how to explain the way my hands shake when I think about losing you, or the way my chest tightens to the thought of you being with someone else who isn’t me, because it messes with my mind sometimes and I get fustrated, because only I want to know your favorite book to the way you hate wearing that poka dot shirt, or how you eat when you’re nervous and can’t seem to stop making a mess. But you always been a messy eater so I don’t mind. I fell in love with you and although you are not perfect because you do have your moments, I promise I will love you again and again and again because I am not perfect either but if I am here, holding my heart out to you, and you are there, doing the same, I swear we both can be non-perfect messes together. And I’m trying not to be too cheesy here, because you always did say I buttered you up too much so for now I’ll leave it off with an I love you and an I’ll love you forever until my very last breath and an I am so lucky you decided to choose me.
—  A.M// to jake, maybe loving you isn’t so bad after all.

Can I just say how beautiful this seemingly mundane, everyday moment is? See, here Isak is acting like a frustrated brat while trying to learn driving (been there) and you’d think he would be so annoying and difficult to deal with at the moment. But look at Even. Even doesn’t get irritated or angry, he just, looks at him with so much fondness? So must adoration? This is how Even sees Isak. Whether he’s smiling and being cute or screaming from frustration. Through Even’s eyes, Isak is always the best and the most beautiful thing in the world.

i think you’re a jerk
i think you’re the most beautiful person in the entire world but what you’re doing to me is so ugly
i think your hands are too steady holding the knives you keep plunging into my back
into my chest
i think you’re killing me slowly
i think you know it
i think you don’t care
i think you’re the best thing to ever happen to me
i think losing you is the worst thing to ever happen to me
i think you’re going to be okay
i think i will be too
or maybe i won't
i think one day but not today
i think you love(d) me
i think i love you
i think i always will
—  i think i care too much about hurting your feelings to tell you what i really think
(cc, 2017)

Pinky.

I remember all the promises we’ve made together—all the good things you’ve said that I thought would last forever. We were like kids writing our futures without knowing how time could change us—how the world will try to always make us reminisce the past. How the people around us will try to mold us into something we didn’t want.

Ring.

It was the different type of love. I don’t know if fate is real or if destiny confuses us about what we feel. But I always imagine you with me, and my heart beating with yours in symphony. It was the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. The most wonderful feeling I couldn’t get tired of.

Middle.

There’s always something that goes in between. Pedestrians passing by— every time the traffic lights signal us to stop. When you were walking fast yet caught up behind someone who is walking slowly enough. When you already want to do the things you love, but you saw something that puts a doubt in your heart. When you thought you already found someone who you can’t enjoy living without.

Index.

I choose you over anything else, hoping that you’ll also end up picking me over everybody else. Yet I put a finger on your lips telling you to stop spreading all the sugar coated lies. I point to your chest, hoping for you to be honest. Darling I think I couldn’t take it anymore, if you continue to pretend that you still love me more.

Thumb.

Believe when I say that everything will be okay, even if it will take a lot of time for me to heal. In the end I will surely learn from all of this things. I will still carry the love I have somewhere inside me. Not for you, but for—each and every—broken part of me. This is how I should let go of you. One by one, I’ll remove my fingertips away from holding your hands. One by one I’ll let go of you so you can rest and breathe. Day by day, letting go will ease the pain.

And until my hands stop bleeding, my soul will suddenly appreciate the wonderful life I’m living. In the end my heart will learn how to love myself more—and will finally consider it as my home.

The Element EVERYTHING in Your Story Needs

To all the writers who have ever felt lost, alone, and completely confused during the labyrinthine journey that is writing anything, and felt like screaming this at your story …

There’s hope.

There’s a light at the end of that darn tunnel. First, let me describe how I used to fight my way out of these periods of confusion and hopelessness.

Usually, I would try to force myself to get back into the groove of the story. I would reread it, and be yelling at myself in my head, “Remember why you love it! LOVE your book again! Keep reading and FALL IN LOVE, damn it!” I’d go over descriptions, bits of dialogue, banter between the characters. I’d go over settings and imagery, and try to make myself remember how much they’d once excited me. I’d read things that had made me laugh when I typed them, sentences that I was particularly proud of, paragraphs that made me feel particularly clever. But the thing was, it didn’t work.

I didn’t care.

What was the problem? The problem was some of those descriptions, settings, images, and witty episodes of bantering had no Story Reason to be there. They were just there because they amused me. Just because I found the imagery beautiful. Just because I found a sentence or joke really clever and wanted to share my wit with the world. But the world didn’t care about my wit. Because the world (the people reading my book) knew subconsciously that there was no story to give that so-called witty sentence substance and meaning. I could create the most breath-taking images, I could make the most well-rounded living and breathing character, I could make a setting that you wanted to run away from home and live inside … and it didn’t matter. If the thing didn’t have a purpose for being there within the narrative, nobody cared. And I didn’t either.

So what is a Story Reason?

Everything in a story exists to support one of three things.

1. The A-story: The surface plot, the quest of the main character to achieve a specific tangible goal. What the story is about on the surface.

2. The B-Story: The love story, or relationship of the thing. Usually this relationship is instrumental in causing the third element, which is …

3. The Character Arc. The theme of the story, the purpose, the piece of truth the story seeks to prove to the main character and the audience.

If something in a story doesn’t contribute to the progress of these three, there’s no reason we should care about it. It has no point. Because in the end, all we care about is the story!

When it comes to scenes, story reason means continuity. It means the way the story unfolds logically. If every scene is there for a darn good reason, the scenes after and before will make total sense, they’ll connect seamlessly, a steady progression of events. Every scene’s turn triggers the next scene.

And to do this, every scene must be able to be linked with three words: Because of that.

Because of the turn of one scene …

The next scene happens.

And because of the turn of that scene the next scene happens.

To illustrate how this works, let’s look at a small movie you might have heard about called Zootopia. (Thanks to @inked-withlove for the movie suggestion!)

So let’s start at this point, the turn of the scene with Clawhauser and Judy searching the file on Emmitt Otterton.

Turn: “I have a lead."

Because of that …

Judy has to get Nick to tell her what he knows about Otterton.

Turn: It all goes poorly, and now Nick and Judy are stuck together by an incriminating adorable carrot recorder. (The B Story, the relationship, has intertwined with the A Story.)

Because of that …

Nick takes Judy to the place he saw Otterton go, a place he thinks will cause her to give up.

Turn: She doesn’t quit, she marches right in. (B Story: Nick sounds surprised, and a little impressed, that she didn’t back down.)

Because of that …

She has to question a rude yoga-performing elephant.

Turn: Though the elephant is absolutely no help, the seemingly addled yak is more than helpful – he even remembers the license plate number of the car Emmitt left in.

Because of that …

Nick thinks his part in this endeavor is complete. But Judy remembers that she’s not in the system yet, and thus can’t run a plate. Nick, however, can. And he’s going to, or else.

Turn: It just so happens that he has a pal at the DMV.

Because of that …

Sloths. He takes her to a DMV run by sloths and wastes as much of her precious dwindling time as he can.

Turn: “It’s night?!”

Because of that …

Legitimate Enterprise Car Service (at least that’s what it’s called in the screenplay) is closed. Judy doesn’t have a warrant and Nick is enjoying her suffering tremendously. After a spat, she tosses the carrot over the fence instead of handing it to him.

Turn: Because she has now seen a shifty low-life climbing the fence, she has probable cause, and doesn’t need a warrant. She can go in. (B Story: Nick is looking at her with more respect.)

Because of that …

They find the car and begin investigating. The car is a crime scene; claw marks everywhere, the missing otter’s wallet … and a cocktail glass etched with a "B”.

Turn: And it all adds up for Nick. This car belongs to Mr Big, a notorious crime boss. And his polar bear henchman are right outside. They grab Judy and Nick and yank them off screen.

Because of that  …

Judy and Nick are wedged between the bear henchman, on their way to face Mr Big.

Turn: Nick sold him a very expensive rug that happened to be made from the fur of a skunk’s butt. Or in other words, Mr Big really doesn’t like Nick.

Because of that …

They wait fearfully for Mr Big to appear, and even when he’s revealed to be a tiny shrew, Nick still launches into obsequious and panicked mode. He tries talking his way out of it, but Mr Big really REALLY doesn’t like him. And when Judy shouts at him that she’s a cop and she has evidence on him –

Turn: “Ice ‘em.”

Because of that …

“No icing anyone at my wedding!” Fru Fru Shrew is not a happy camper. Father and daughter bicker about his promise of no murder on her wedding day, and the fact that “I have to, baby. Daddy has to.” Until –

Turn: “She’s the bunny who saved my life yesterday. From that giant doughnut!” Well, Judy is now in Mr Big’s good books. He’s going to pay her kindness forward. Nick is floored.

I’m gonna stop there.

SO! After going through that analysis of how the scenes are linked together, let’s abandon the “everything needs a story reason to be in there” rule, and see what happens.

After the scene where Judy and Nick reluctantly join forces, we could add a scene where Nick is trying to remember the name of the place, and where it is. Then we could have them asking around, searching the city, refusing to ask for directions, lots of banter. THEN we can finally get to The Mystic Springs Oasis.

And after they get the plate number, maybe Nick grabs the carrot pen and makes a run for it. Then we can have a chase scene, but he gets away. Then we can have Judy trying to run the plate on her own, before realizing she isn’t in the system, and failing. Then we can have a scene where she has to track down Nick again. Then a scene where she figures out how to blackmail him into it. THEN they finally get to the DMV.

And you know what would have happened then?

Zootopia would have made everyone bored.

All of these inserted scenes are unnecessary. Sure, they might add conflict, add complications to Judy’s quest, but they’re ultimately just filler. They’re just there for the sake of bulking out the story. This is why that tip I hear so often in writing circles always perplexes me: “Figure out the worst possible thing that can happen to your character, then do that.” If people went with this rule, they’d just keep throwing terrible things at the characters for no apparent reason, one after another, and the reader or audience would be expected to be entertained by it (but wouldn’t be). It would be like cartoons before Mickey Mouse came along and applied story to animation: before, cartoons were just gag after gag, slapstick situations mashed together like a funny video compilation. Except with books and movies, it would just be conflict-heavy situations strung together, taking an inordinate amount of time to make any actual progress.

Once you make sure everything has a purpose within the narrative, things get so much better.  And I find, when I reread my work I don’t have to scream at myself to “love your book or else” if everything has a reason for being there. And instead of feeling like yelling at my story like an angry overworked crab, I feel a lot more like this gif.

I hope it works for you too.

Hi guys! Here’s a little masterpost of quotes from children’s books that you can use in your bullet journal, or anywhere else you feel like!

THE LITTLE PRINCE (ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY)

  • “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
  • “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart.”
  • “You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed.”
  • “You - you alone will have the stars as no one else has them…In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night…You - only you - will have stars that can laugh.”
  • “Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them”

A LITTLE PRINCESS (FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT)

  • “If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.”
  • “When you will not fly into a passion people know you are stronger than they are, because you are strong enough to hold in your rage, and they are not, and they say stupid things they wish they hadn’t said afterward. “
  • “There’s nothing so strong as rage, except what makes you hold it in–that’s stronger. It’s a good thing not to answer your enemies.”
  • “If nature has made you for a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that–warm things, kind things, sweet things–help and comfort and laughter–and sometimes gay, kind laughter is the best help of all.”
  • “Somehow, something always happens just before things get to the very worst. It is as if Magic did it. If I could only just remember that always. The worse thing never quite comes.”
  • “But I suppose there might be good in things, even if we don’t see it.”
  • “You don’t forget, but you bear it better.”

LITTLE WOMEN (LOUISA MAY ALCOTT)

  • “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”
  • “It’s wicked to throw away so many good gifts because you can’t have the one you want.”
  • “Love is a great beautifier.”
  • “Watch and pray, dear, never get tired of trying, and never think it is impossible to conquer your fault.”
  • “I want to do something splendid…something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don’t know what, but I’m on the watch for it and mean to astonish you all someday.”
  • “Conceit spoils the finest genius.”
  • “Be comforted, dear soul! There is always light behind the clouds.”
  • “Life and love are very precious when both are in full bloom.”
  • “The only chivalry worth having is that which is the readiest to to pay deference to the old, protect the feeble, and serve womankind, regardless of rank, age, or color.”

  • “The humblest tasks get beautified if loving hands do them.”
  • “Now and then, in this workaday world, things do happen in the delightful storybook fashion, and what a comfort that is.”

MATLIDA (ROALD DAHL)

  • “So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.”
  • “Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it’s unbelievable…”
  • “I have found it impossible to talk to anyone about my problems. I couldn’t face the embarrassment, and anyway I lack the courage. Any courage I had was knocked out of me when I was young. But now, all of sudden I have a sort of desperate wish to tell everything to somebody.”
  • “I’ve always said to myself that if a little pocket calculator can do it why shouldn’t I?”
  • “There is little point in teaching anything backwards. The whole object of life, Headmistress, is to go forwards.”
  • “I’m afraid men are not always quite as clever as they think they are.”

THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH (NORTON JUSTER)

  • “So many things are possible just as long as you don’t know they’re impossible.”
  • “Have you ever heard the wonderful silence just before the dawn? Or the quiet and calm just as a storm ends? Or perhaps you know the silence when you haven’t the answer to a question you’ve been asked, or the hush of a country road at night, or the expectant pause of a room full of people when someone is just about to speak, or, most beautiful of all, the moment after the door closes and you’re alone in the whole house? Each one is different, you know, and all very beautiful if you listen carefully.”
  • “Time is a gift, given to you, given to give you the time you need, the time you need to have the time of your life. ”
  • “You must never feel badly about making mistakes … as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons.”
  • “The most important reason for going from one place to another is to see what’s in between.”
  • “What you can do is often simply a matter of what you will do.”

he has so many :///

In 1947, Tove Jansson began one of her most famous and most challenging art projects ever. She was ordered to paint two large frescos to the dining room of the Helsinki city hall, by Erik von Frenckell. Tove began the ambitious work with passion to celebrate the time after war in Finland. Each step she reported to her “beloved Vifslan”, Vivica Bandler.

Vivica Bandler was Tove’s first female lover. Their love was passionate and all-consuming. Tove worshipped Vivica and described that loving her had changed everything. All things felt new and all feelings were more intense. And Tove was not shy about showing this love, even if she did it in secret (note, homosexuality was illegal in Finland until 1971 and listed as a disease until 1981).

One of the boldest and bravest gestures was in one of the frescos ordered by von Frenckell (Vivica’s father, actually).

The blonde woman smoking her cigarette is Tove herself and the dark-haired woman dancing behind her is Vivica. Painting them so close and so visible was a brave move on Tove’s part and served to fuel the rumours around them. Tove laid out her love for all the world to see, but in a careful way.

Tove and Vivica even appear in Moomin books; as Thingumy and Bob from Finn Family Moomintroll (1948). Their original Swedish names, Tofslan and Vifslan, give away the connection. These two speak in a secret language only they can understand and are running away from The Groke who wants to steal their precious gem; the most beautiful thing in the world. You do not need deep analysis to see what the story represents.

Eventually Tove’s and Vivica’s love ended like all quick and passionate love stories; to it’s own impossibility. Like with about all her lovers, Tove still remained friends with Vivica. Hot summer turned to cool autumn in the book and the frescos were finished.

From the April Fools DLC Normal Ending:

“Even if I can never touch you, I know that the feelings we have towards each other can’t be trapped in any dimension.”

I KNEW THAT SOUNDED FAMILIAR. I JUST KNEW. AND I WAS COMPLETELY RIGHT. JUST LOOK AT WHAT HE SAYS IN THE AFTER ENDING.

Now, moving on to my theory.

On Day 7 of Zen’s route, you go over to his house and he brings you to the rooftop to stargaze. I’m sure all of you remember that CG of him staring at the night sky right?

This completely went over my head, but he had said this:

“It’s strange… I feel as if I’ve known you for a long time.

Why do you think that is?

You’re… strange.”

We could look at this as Zen getting confused about his budding feelings for you, but it’s really all about interpretation. Even from the start, we already see mentions of the stars, the sky, and so on.

I mean, look at what he said in his After Ending! Isn’t it weird that he’s suddenly bringing up that no matter FAR APART both of you are, you’ll always think of each other? It’s like he’s linking the skies (or universe, DIMENSIONS) to your distance from each other. I’m assuming that at this point in time, he had felt strange because he just started to realise how unreal (because different dimensions) you were.

I really like to use the argument of his psychic dreams because it’s absolutely fascinating. And again, let’s look at this theory on the basis of the recommended route sequence:

Zen -> Yoosung -> Jaehee -> Jumin -> Seven

What if even in his own ending, he knows he won’t be able to keep you and you’ll just end up moving on? What if he knows that there is in fact distance between the both of you, be it emotionally (because you do all the other routes after him) or literally (because you’re in different dimensions)?

He never fully comes to terms with the whole dimension thing in the main game, but he did in the April Fools DLC. Every single time, no matter what, there’s bound to be distance between the both of you. Does Zen just know this?

We all label Zen as narcissistic but in his route it’s so obvious how insecure he really is, how unconfident he is. He constantly praises you and phrases it in a way that sounds like even he, the MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN IN THE WORLD, doesn’t deserve someone like you. But why is that so?

What if he just has an inkling that the both of you aren’t meant to be? He’s always known there’s something off there. That’s why, at least in my opinion, he shows the most affection throughout those eleven days he has with you. He always lives in the moment when he’s with you, taking care of you, keeping you safe, expressing his love… because he knows that’s the only time he has with you. Maybe he knows it’s unrealistic to think that the both of you will end up staying like that forever.

And you know, after the Seven’s route, Day 10 call you had with him when he confessed that “I could’ve made you happy too.” he doesn’t appear as much anymore. He’s actually the most uninvolved character in the Secret Endings.

Guys, Zen is aware of the distance. Zen is aware that it’s not meant to be. But he does love you. He wants you to know that, but being a gentleman, he chooses to keep his distance too after he sees how happy you are with another person. But you damn well know he’ll be there to support you just like how he does in every route.

I really don’t know if I’ve explained it well enough, but I see a lot of Seven reset theories and not really much on Zen, so here’s my take on it.

To end it off, let me give you Zen’s final lines in the April Fools DLC normal ending:

“I love you, ____.

Let’s be forever.”

PREVIOUS THEORY

I’ve seen the headcanons and fics where Keith laughs and smiles and Lance just melts but what if Keith sees Lance laugh, like actually laugh and he just stops.

Like the boy has to clutch his chest, walk away to the most deserted part of the castle and just lay his head against the wall and think because how. the. fuck. does Lance to just be that flawlessly beautiful without even trying and who asked him to light up Keith’s whole world like that, who is he to just make his heart do things hearts aren’t supposed to do like stop and why-

“Shiro what are you doing put me down.“

“Buddy it’s been six hours you need to eat dinner with us, we almost thought you were dead or something.“

“You let me lay eyes on Lance I will be.“

“Oh fucking- this again Keith? Really?“
