you are not allowed in the white house

Y/N P.O.V.

Your right leg uncontrollably bounced and you unconsciously nibbled on your finger nail in the car ride with Zach.

Today would be the first time you’ll be going over his house and tutoring him.

You were uncomfortable for two reasons:

You had lied to Hannah and you were going to be alone with Zach.

Seventeen things you have to learn for yourself
as a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Pansexual
or otherwise Queer youth
by the time you are seventeen.

One is that the first Pride was a riot
I don’t mean that it was full of laughter, or that it was some grand party
where everyone spiraled up to dance among the stars
because the only glittering that night
was broken glass on cobblestones.
The first Pride was a riot
on the backstreets of New York
and they never tell us
that night
we won.
The only protest
in a decade full of turmoil
where the cops had to hide out in the bar they raided
and run from shouting rioters
who fought to reclaim the only patch of ground they had ever claimed as theirs
the first Pride was a riot,

and two, around the same time it took place
it was a debated topic in the gay community
whether or not they should say
that they weren’t mentally ill

which, three, homosexuality was removed
from the American Psychiatric Association’s list of mental illnesses
in 1974
congratulations
all it took was a vote to declare that, whoops, we were never mentally ill

except, four, there are still teenagers being tortured today
in what some dare blaspheme as “therapy”
used to destroy their self-identity
in the hopes of making them normal.
except, four, the queer community still carries overwhelmingly high rates for poverty and homelessness and depression.

Did you know that, five,
over half the children forced into conversion therapy
commit suicide?

And six, that lesbians
were regarded as “hangers-on”
of the movement
by much of the gay community
before the AIDS crisis?

Because it turns out, seven can wear a rainbow on your shirt
and still be a bigot.
There are people who stick rainbows in their ears
or wear them on their fingers
or slap them across their cheeks in badges of defiance
and will still hate you for the color of your skin
or the size of your thighs
or your gender
or the way you like to kiss two or more genders
or none of the above.
Don’t ask me why this happens
it just does
I think it might be that we’ve all been taught to hate ourselves
for so damn long
that we don’t understand what to do
in a space with no hate.
Or maybe it’s that the space seems too small, because

eight, there are people who will tell you that you are not enough
that you do not reach the magical benchmark of “gay enough” to pass through the gate even
especially
when you are some flavor of the rainbow other than straight-out gay.
eight, this is bullshit
eight, those people are bullshit.
eight, you are enough.
eight, there is always enough room.

nine, there is no overarching “homosexual agenda”
sorry
we’re all kind of flailing along in here trying to figure out some way to make it work
when most of us have nothing in common
except that society looked at us in different ways and decided we didn’t fit
so we could all go be misfits together
under one big rainbow flag

but just so you know, ten, there are plenty of other flags
there is one for you, I promise

and eleven, misfits may not all need the same things
but we need to stick together, especially in a world where

twelve—refer to point seven—there are lesbians who hate other lesbians
for having the audacity to be born in a body
that everyone looked at and saw “boy”
which brings me to

thirteen, there is so much to understand.

fourteen, you need to understand
because we need to stick together
and to stick together we do not have to be the same but we do have to understand
and it will be hard because
you were probably thrown into this world with no warning because

fifteen, being queer is not genetic and we are not unique among minorities
in that we collect our heritage through broken bits of history and research in a world constantly working to make those misfit bits go away
but we are unique in that when we try to prove our legacy
we can be laughed down
or re-erased
or flat out ignored
but I swear to you
you have a history as old as Alexander the Great
as beautiful as Sappho
as dignified as Abraham Lincoln
and as proud as Eleanor Roosevelt.

But even with that behind us
sixteen,
they have always watched us die.
because even though the bystander effect is bullshit, sixteen
Kitty Genovese was a lesbian, sixteen
Ronald Reagan is a mass murderer, sixteen
our children, your brothers and sisters and  siblings of all stripes and all colors and sexualities and genders are being murdered
through neglect
and rejection
and hate.

Sixteen, there is an entire generation of gay and bisexual men
missing from history
because the government chose to do nothing
when they were dying by the thousands.
sixteen, we died from the disease and died from going back into the closet and died for staying there and died for coming out,
sixteen, they laughed at us because they believed god was punishing us for daring to love,
sixteen, ashes of your forerunners rest on the lawn of the White House because
SIXTEEN, THEY HAVE ALWAYS WATCHED US DIE.

SEVENTEEN
you are allowed
to be angry.
You do not have to be one of the nice gays
or one of the nice trans people
or sweet or kind or educate the rest of the world in something less than a yell
you are allowed to be so furious it scalds your bones
at the way we are forgotten
and passed over
at the way, as soon as June becomes July
we are expected
to go back to dying in silence
and mourning our dead
and kissing all alone
when no one can be offended
at the sight of us.
You are allowed to be angry
and scream down the stars
to shatter like broken glass at your feet
because you know what?
The first Pride
was a riot.

—  October 11
something that I have not yet seen discussed in the punching Nazis discussion

I am a woman, and I am queer. If the alt-right got the control they wanted, I would be affected.

I am also cis, straight-passing, middle-class, and, this one is majorly important, fucking white.

Most of the pearl-clutching I’ve seen over how we can’t POSSIBLY meet hate speech with violence, we can’t sink to their level, that makes us as bad as them, etc, etc - most of that is coming from white liberals.

And the thing is, fellow white people, is that this is on us.

You know who’s preaching this Neo-Nazi bullshit? White people. Do you know where this ‘philosophy’ came from, who developed it historically? White people. Do you know who fucked up basically the entire planet, spreading our racism, our homophobia, our sexism, our religious fundamentalism like a gods-damn virus everywhere we went, from North America to Africa to Japan?

White people.

We did this. We allowed it to happen. We invented it historically, we preached it historically, and even when a lot of us learned better, we allowed this shit to grow unmolested in various corners of our society. We even let it get into our governments and houses of law.

So we don’t get to flail and wail and wring our hands. We absolutely do not get to patronisingly, hypocritically chide the various minorities who respond to the hate and oppression we created and allowed and abet with hatred and violence, as if somehow their hate and violence is unjustified. As if we didn’t start it first. As if we haven’t turned our eyes aside, again and again and again, from those in our demographics who preach and act on hatred from positions of power.

You don’t get to criticize an abuse victim for finally hitting back.

The Neo-Nazis and alt-right are our fault, and they’re our responsibility to police and get rid of, because we’re the ones who share their privilege, we’re the ones who can confront and shut them down with the highest chances of success and from the positions of most safety. These are people who demonstrably can’t be reasoned with. It’s been tried. Sure, we can change our education system to promote empathy and enlightenment, but that’s a long-term solution that won’t fix any of the issues facing us right now.

So you - we - have a choice. We can wring our hands and do nothing, the same way Britain and the Allies did nothing when they first heard reports of what the historical Nazis were doing. We can sign petitions they’ll ignore and march in protests they deliberately miscount. Or we can not repeat our predecessors’ mistakes, and stop this shit now, before it gets any worse, before it goes where we know this kind of hate speech goes.

And if that means punching a Nazi in the face, then every single one of us should be strapping on the boxing gloves.

Trump’s FCC Chairman Ajit Pai may crack down on net neutrality — and ruin your internet

  • Hope you all like buffering. Net neutrality is on the chopping block, so the future may be full of it.
  • After President Donald Trump took up residence in the White House, one of his first actions was to appoint Ajit Pai as Federal Communications Commission chairman.
  • During his time as an FCC commissioner, Pai has been strongly opposed to net neutrality and has already started making changes to policies approved under Barack Obama’s administration — including reversing a decision by his predecessor, Tom Wheeler, that allowed nine companies to provide low-income Americans with subsidized internet. Lots of narratives have been going around about why Hillary lost. Most are placing the blame directly on the candidate herself, ignoring a few key points:

1. Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million votes. Yes. 3 million. To minimize this or not take it into consideration proves you are bias in your analysis of why Hillary lost. You don’t win the popular vote by 3 million if you are a truly bad candidate (Hillary also won every single debate). And for historical reference, Al Gore only won the popular vote by 500,000. Hillary won it by 3 million. 3 million votes is no small feat. You cannot ignore this fact if you want an un-bias analysis of why Hillary lost the election. The last two Republican Presidents lost the popular vote!

Also – both popular vote winners Al Gore and Hillary Clinton were hurt by progressives (Nader and Bernie) who got too comfortable after 8 years of a Democrat in the White House. Our side seems to shoot itself in the foot after 8 years in power. As we learned yet again – every vote counts, especially in the swing states. Because guess what? You can win the popular vote and still lose the election due to the electoral college. Progressives blew it big time for the second time in 20 years and hurt our popular vote winners Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. A cumulative 3.5 million more votes for the Democrats!

2. In U.S. politics, one party usually has power over the White House for only 8 years. Very rarely does a party hold onto the White House longer than 8 years. The last time was when Bush Senior won after Ronald Reagan, but then he quickly lost re-election to Bill Clinton. Democrat Al Gore couldn’t even win after Clinton left us with a surplus and booming economy. This usually happens because the side that isn’t in power tends to rise up, while the side that occupies the White House gets lazy and complicit. From a historical perspective, America was already headed towards a Republican Administration in 2016. Combine that with the racist backlash to Obama, and Trump exploiting the rise of worldwide racist nationalism, it’s no wonder their base turned out and ours didn’t. Remember – under Obama, the Democrats have lost 900 legislative seats nationwide and most of the Governorships and state legislatures, too (in addition to the White House and U.S. Congress). The backlash to Obama has been strong and was bound to hurt us in 2016. Point is – in American politics, very rarely does the same party occupy the White House for more than two-terms. This especially holds true when you combine that with racism and the rise of nationalism working against the first African American President. Conservatives were out for blood after 8 years of Obama, while our side shot itself in the foot by allowing Bernie to run as a Democrat (Nader all over again).

3. Just as in the United Kingdom (Brexit), there has been a worldwide resurgence in a nationalistic white working-class. Trump exploited this in a way Bernie Sanders never could have. Why? Because nationalism is being used to scapegoat immigrants and minorities. The 2016 election truly was an election about which party was going to turn out their base (whites vs. minorities). That’s why Hillary spent her time trying to convince us of the dangers a Trump Presidency posed to minorities. And if we had voted in levels similar to 2008, our base would have triumphed. But a core part of our base was missing – young voters that showed up for Obama but not Hillary. Why? Bernie fucking Sanders. Most of the “Bernie-or-Bust” voters I knew were young male progressives who puked at the thought of ever voting for Hillary. They even called Bernie a “sell-out” when he half-heartedly campaigned for her. What a shame. Because in the face of Brexit, every vote counted. Remember – Trump only won the swing states by a total of 80,000. How many “Bernie-or-Busters” were in the swing states? Seriously – never underestimate angry white men showing up at the polls (Brexit and Trump). Our side is much harder to turn out. That’s why every vote counted. And yes… I’m looking at you, college students!

4. Comey. The momentum the 3rd debate victory produced was lost after the Comey letter. The 3rd debate was the debate where “Nasty Woman” was coined. The closet thing the Hillary campaign came to naturally produced momentum. And it (luckily) came near the end of the election in the final stretch. Hillary was riding high after the 3rd debate domination – 11% polling lead. Everyone thought she was going to win and Nate Silver gave her over a 90% chance of winning. But then came the Comey letter.

His letter also came after the release of Trump’s “pussy grabber” tape. The media narrative switched from “pussy grabber” to “FBI re-opens Clinton E-mail Probe.” The headlines became anti-Clinton rather than anti-Trump. And in American culture, media momentum is huge. That’s why they call it an “October Surprise.” Late deciding voters heavily broke for Trump due to the Comey letter and that’s what made the difference.

Hillary ordered a complete analysis of the election and the Comey letter was the only new variable from her 11-point polling bump after the 3rd debate to election day. “Pussy grabber” was old news. “E-mails” became front and center yet again. This is why there is currently an independent review of Comey’s actions as we speak. Official protocol says to never release anything about a case if it may sway an election. Why? Because it might turn out to be false. Just like what happened. Comey ultimately retracted the letter in the final hours of the election, but the damage had already been done. Hillary was finished. Her 11-point debate lead – gone. That’s why there is currently an official investigation into Comey breaking official protocol and swaying the election in Trump’s favor. Once this investigation is complete, I’m sure you’ll be hearing from the Clintons.

5. Sexism. The 2016 election proved a far more qualified woman can still lose to a far less qualified man. Actually, Hillary was the most qualified person (man or woman) to ever run for the Presidency. Any man with Hillary’s accomplishments and qualifications never would have lost. It wouldn’t have even been close. Period.

6. Russian interference. We’ll never know exactly how much Russia swayed the election, but the influx of “fake news” targeting Hillary Clinton definitely had an impact on her public perception, especially in regards to her “trustworthiness.” Putin had a vendetta against Hillary because he held her responsible for the protests he faced after his re-election. He also thought Hillary would be far more aggressive and effective than Obama. He’d rather have a puppet and buffoon as President (Trump) than the brilliant Hillary Rodham Clinton.

7. The media. Hillary’s e-mails were made to seem just as bad as the millions of horrific things Trump did over the course of his 4-times bankrupt career. The false equivalence was mind-boggling. In the pursuit of trying to appear “un-bias” by saying both sides were equally corrupt, they ended up being bias against Hillary and helping Trump win the Presidency. The actual un-bias viewpoint is that nothing Hillary has done is anywhere near the level of deplorable things Trump has done. But the media made Hillary seem just as bad as Trump in order to give the impression that they were being “objective.”

I truly hope the media did some soul-searching after the 2016 election. Tearing down Hillary and glorifying Trump – giving rise to his “cult-of-personality” has really bitten you in the ass, hasn’t it? Now you have at minimum 4 years of covering a manipulative propaganda artist con-man who just likes to play head games. Have fun!!

8. Republican witch-hunts. Republicans abused their power, which led to 8 separate Benghazi investigations. More investigations than Pearl Harbor, the JFK assassination, and 9/11. Yet Hillary was never found of any wrongdoing and came out victorious after her triumphant 11-hour Benghazi testimony. Unfortunately, after so many fake “scandals,” Hillary’s image had been damaged. Which was the entire point of these fake scandals – even if Hillary isn’t guilty, we can still accuse her of corruption and plant seeds of doubt. But rather than viewing the Republicans as the corrupt ones, manufacturing fake Clinton scandals and wasting tax-payer money, many Americans drank the Clinton hate kool-aid (even progressives).

All of these factors led to the “perfect storm.” Which is why we needed every single vote in every single state. Yet Hillary still managed to win the popular vote by 3 million despite Russian interference, Bernie mania, multiple witch-hunts by Republicans, 11-hour Benghazi testimony, sexism, a media hell bent on false equivalency, a rise in worldwide racist nationalism, one party historically only occupying the White House for 8 years, and the devastating Comey letter.

3 million more votes. Despite it all. A majority of Americans agree with our vision and our values. By the millions. And that’s not even taking into consideration ID laws and voter suppression of minorities, which greatly decreased the amount we won by.

“But, you know, then at the end, we had the Russians and the FBI deal. She couldn’t prevail against that. She did everything else and still won by 2.8 million votes.

The finest vote counter in America is Nate Silver. He told you what costed the election.” ~President Bill Clinton

A political icon and legend. Was going for round 3 in the White House. And we all know she ran it the first two times.

June 1941.

You’d counted the days until you’d see him again.

The ocean breeze felt nice against your skin, a cool contrast to the sun hanging high in the afternoon sky. You looked up, shielding your eyes with your hand, as you watched a couple of seagulls fighting against the wind, one gliding in front of the other to hold back the full weight of the wind. You smiled, finding something beautiful about the act, and you lowered your gaze back to the ocean, immediately bringing your hands up to form a makeshift picture frame. There was nothing but blue, blue skies, blue clouds, blue water, blue everything, and it was beautiful to you. You wanted to hold onto it forever, the idea that there were infinite possibilities swimming in the depths of all that blue—infinite possibilities to reach beyond the sky, and infinite possibilities to scavenge beneath the sea—and all you had to do was imagine it, or take hold of it; it didn’t matter, it was yours for the taking.

You hummed to yourself, letting your hands fall to your sides just as a voice sounded behind you. You looked over your shoulders, towards the grassy hills beyond the beach, weaving along the pathway to the woman shouting over the howling wind. You could barely hear her as she continued to call to you, waving her hands in a circular motion for you to come to her. You stared at her, finding no reason to go to her when you were at peace right where you were. By the looks, you could tell she was rolling her eyes at you, annoyed that you remained as stubborn as you had been as a child, and she cusped her hands in a circle around her mouth, calling out to you for the final time.

“Y/N, he’s back!”

the houses

(a rather abstract description of the houses, what they could look like and things they contain)

first house: You open a giant, dark wooden door. The knob is hot as you touch it but you don’t flinch and enter a even hotter room, you immediately start sweating. The air is burning and the windows are wide open. Bright light is shining trough some kind of living room, full of possessions of the creature living there. You look around and already know who must be the owner. Still, you ask who lives there and the strong Aries enters the room, his aura is radiant, vibrant, lively, present. “I am life”, he speaks clearly. “I am energy, physical appearance, the self, the will and the doing. I show you how you approach the world and open yourself to it.”

second house: This door is made out of silver, with blue ornaments. It looks beautiful and must be of high value. With a ‘click’ the door opens, but it really is heavy, so you got to put more effort into the act of opening it. The room is rather minimalist, but some of the furniture and paintings must be old and very expensive. The Taurus stands in front of the high windows and looks out of it, the eyes tired, even a bit melancholic. “Is there something I can do for you?”, the Taurus asked, the voice deep and kind of magnetic. “I want to know who you are”, you ask slowly. The Taurus blinks slowly and answers: “I am development, self worth and win and loss, materialistic and emotional safety, setting limits and fighting for protection.”

third house: As you come closer to the third door you can hear people speaking. Or at least someone who is discussing something with someone. Voices come and voices go, you are wondering how many people might be in there? The door looks asymmetrical and as you enter the room you are not sure if it’s an office or plainly a full room. As you look around you see that there are radios everywhere, from old to new and each of them is turned on. So that must be the voices. Notes over notes are gathered on the floor and walls, between them some  pictures pinned to the wall of different people. Right in the middle is the Gemini, both of them talking in a heat with a coffee in the right and a pencil in the left hand, constantly taking notes. “So, you must be..?”
“The Gemini!”, one answers excited. The other one continues, more thoughtful: “We are communication, the image, the way of thinking, and -”
“..the ability to adjust, the close environment, small adventures, our neighbors as well as-”
“Siblings!”, the other one finishes the sentence and both of them laugh, clear as a bell.

fourth house: You hold on before opening this door. It’s made out of colored, dark blue wood, the knob is glowing and the night sky is painted on the dark background. As you open the door everything seems quiet, but you hear someone humming a lullaby, quietly. The cancer sits in the middle of the darkened room, old photo albums, books and letters are gathered around her and she looks like she would fall asleep in any second. You see that this is a bedroom, filled with belongings of her and you hear the sound of the waves outside somewhere from the opened window. As you sit quietly next to her and watch her looking through the photos, she smiles softly before answering your unspoken question: “You know what I am? I am emotions and the feeling of true belonging. I am the roots of your inner being, family and home, your psychological identification, the connection of the environment and private life. I am the intimacy, age and the unconsciousness.”

fifth house: This door is not wooden. It is made out of the finest marble you could find here on earth. The knob is long and golden, a Latin phrase is written on the shimmering marble, it says ‘Ab imo pectore‘, from the bottom of my heart. You can hear music playing loudly and with an easy sweep you open the giant. You enter an atelier, the light is glowing golden and the Leo dances in the middle of it. Everything look rather antique, but with such grace and vividness, you cannot stop yourself from smiling. The sudden laugh of the Leo sounds like an imitating roar and he tip toes to his lover on the giant bed next to the window. “You are even more beautiful than my paintings, I could never capture your beauty.” As his lover smiles and takes his hands, they suddenly point in your direction and the Leo turns around, his thick hair shining in the light. “What do you want, stranger?” You answer honestly and the Leo laughs again as you want to know who he is. “I am art, your passions, creativity and individuality. The will for live, joy, children, the partner, sexuality, the wish for admiration and appreciation. “

sixth house: This door seems rather modest, but pretty as well. It seems to be quiet smaller than the rest of the doors you have seen so far. It has small little patterns carved in it. You see a note in the middle of it, it’s telling you to knock before opening and so you do as it told you. “Yes, you may come in.” You enter a cold, neatly tidied up working room, the lights are dimmed but the creature - the Virgo - in front of you is uptight, being busy doing some work - whatever it might be - but still keep a gentle smile on the lips. “Sorry, I’m in a hurry, please don’t mind the mess.” Mess she says, but you cannot even see a bit of dust on the book shelf. “Please, sit down, do you want something to drink? I cannot let you stay for a long time, but I already know what you might want to know, if you don’t mind answering you question.” Surprised you nod. “I a, work and service, as you can see. I am duty, social integration, physic healthiness, one ones limits and the limit of the others. the balance between my own needs and the ones of the environment.”

seventh house: This door is already open. You are surprised and carefully look into the room. There is a comfortable looking bedroom, its furniture is held in warm colors, there is much light shining inside since the windows are very high and there are no curtains. The Libra is walking directly towards you, a soft smile on the lips and a glass of water in the other hand. “Hey, how are you? Just passing by?” You nod and ask if you are allowed to sit down on the sofa, Libra nods and sits down with you. “Sorry, I am just, ahm-” He pauses as he notes down something in a giant book with a dark, cracked leather binding.” You blink  a few times before asking what kind of book Libra is carrying with him. “Oh this? Sometimes I need to note everything down, every person that touched me, I’ve met, you know. You learn so much by being in touch with others.” You nod, it seems right what he says. “You know, I am the development of ones own identity by meeting others. Relationships to others, the You, mental interest, contacts and meetings, harmony, joy and beauty. The partner, the person opposite as my projection surface, cooperation, socialization, coming together and working together.”

eight house: This door seems made out of stone. You are struggling to open it. Are you allowed to open it? The atmosphere is tense and you hear a vibrant sound somewhere. Next to you  in the hallway is a small window, which you look out of. There is the deep, blackness of the night sky, golden stars are adorning it, among them the white, glowing, milky moon, who whispers sweet promises and goodbyes to you. Suddenly the stone door is opening, you jump in shook and your heartbeat raises as you see red glowing eyes watching you from the dark behind it. “Hello. What do you want”, a deep, echoing voice asks you. Your hands are shaking, you are frightened and at the same time deeply hypnotized. “You are Scorpio, right?” The eyes keep on starring. “I am.” You swallow and ask if you may enter. “I am the darkness that you desire, the occult, the interest, I am passion, desire, transformation, the taboo, the darker side and death. Are you sure you want to come in?” You do not hesitate, but nod instantly. “Hmpf.” A pale hand grabs yours, the skin tone seems too pale for something living, but indeed the hand is warm and you feel oddly safe.

ninth house: You had to climb a long spiral staircase in order to get to this room. Exhausted you breath desperately for air before realizing that you are in a giant tower. This door is slightly opened and you hear music faintly whispering in your ear. “Sorry?”, you ask as you see the Sagittarius twirling around in the room, a couple of maps in the hand. The room is full of possessions, pictures, books, paintings and different furniture from all over the world. Suddenly the Sagittarius stops, his brown eyes vividly laying on you. “Oh hi, didn’t see you there”, he says as he lays down the old maps. You remark the exciting and interesting looking room, it smells like jasmine in here. “You are the urge for more and exploration?”, you ask and the Sagittarius smiles. “I am not only that. I am your conscious mind, always growing, always developing, asking for the meaning of life. I am wanting to expand one’ philosophy, higher norms and values, abstract way of thinking, education and different cultures, explorations and the way of understanding. I am your ideal, your religious and spiritual life.”

tenth house: You knocked almost three times but no one seems to open this door. You are wondering what might happened to the person inside it. You try pushing it as you hear a stricter, cold voice: “Try ringing the bell instead.” It came out of the intercom. “Sorry, I-”
“It’s alright, I don’t mind. Come in.” The door opens from its own and you are intimidated by the big entry. A woman with a suitcase and silky trouser suit walks towards you, the sound of her shoes echoing from the walls. “Hi, I am Capricorn, Excuse me, but I do not like this knocking, there is a bell for a reason.” You look into her grey eyes and even though her facial expressions seems hard you know she is gentle. You apologize but she laughs it off. “I have a meeting at six, and I know what you want - Virgo already called me -, so I am explaining everything now - oh, here take a seat, coffee and biscuits are here on the table.” You do as she said but are somehow a  bit too nervous to eat. “I am the development and realization of ones goals in life or even destiny. I am the public, ones image, law, order and authority. Honor, responsibility, appeal and the position you take in society.”

eleventh house: “Hi, here do I live”, the shield hanging on the door says. Sadly it does not say who “I” is. You ring the door bell and the bell ringing sounds differently than usual. It is longer and you have never heard this kind of melody as a door bell before. “Come in”, someone says quietly. The light is dimmed, and you see Aquarius in front of his Laptop on his bed. “Sorry, had no time tying up, I am trying to connect to this live broadcast of the speech from this dude here, he’s responsible for this rather extreme party and - ah, it’s not working, damn it.” He closes the Laptop and offers you a seat on his bed. “Nice to meet you, want some coffee?” He offers you a cup but takes it back immediately. “Sorry, paint water in there, not coffee, ha. Nice jacket, you come here often?” You shake your head and smile. He is funny and unusual, you like it. “Actually, I wanted to know who..”
“I am? Well, I am the development of your goals regarding society. The zeitgeist, friends, communities, reforms, ambitions and change. Emancipation, patronage, rebellion, humanitarian and social ideals, also hopes and desires.

twelfth house: The last door. Your journey was long but everything has an end and you know that the person behind this door knows this feeling too well - that the circle is closing, ending and repeats itself afterwards. You open the door, knowing you do not have to knock. You step into radiant, glowing, crystal blue water. The water is flowing in circles and Pisces is standing there, the softest smile on the lips, eyes so warm and understanding, the head lightly tilted. You are enchanted by the tingling sensation of the water and as you grab Pisces hands, they are warm and soft. “Do not be afraid. I am endless devotion. Endless devotion without losing ground underneath you feet. I am the other meta-level. Delusional, transparent, drawn to fleeing from fears, but always love deep inside. Come, you can visit the other realm with me now.”

My dear, you keep conveniently forgetting the single most important obstacle to the rise of a fascist dictator: a stable, peaceful, prosperous democracy. You can have every element listed in those fearmongering checkoff lists about fascism, but with that ginormous obstacle in play, fascism will never come to these shores. Not only that, our 2nd Amd rights and our professional military will ensure that our people will never be subjugated by force, whether by foreign threats or from within.

Ok, you now sound like an NRA nut…and that’s being nice about it. “Yeah! Civil war! Guns. Rah rah! American is infallible and untouchable! Pew Pew Pew!”. Just for the record, you know who owns the vast majority of guns in this country? His insane supporters. That’s going to work out great for anyone going against them.

Anyway, Second Amendment Armed Resistance lunacy aside, a “stable, peaceful, prosperous democracy?” you say. Ok. Let’s break down that fallacy with a few facts.

  1. First and foremost, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, as of 2017 the USA is no longer a “full democracy”, but instead considered a “flawed democracy”. Other countries on that same category? The Philippines, South Korea, and Greece for example. Great company we’re keeping.
  2. Reuters just instructed it’s staff to cover the US/Trump the way they cover any other authoritarian regime. And yes, they used the word “authoritarian”. That means one of the largest and most respected international news agencies just put the US in the same context as Turkey, the Philippines, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Thailand, China, Zimbabwe, and Russia.
  3. Donald Trump filed with the FEC for 2020 reelection on January 20th, 2017. This is major for several reasons. First and foremost, it is NOT NORMAL. Obama filed for 2012 reelection in April 2011. Incumbent declaring before midterms is unheard of. Several MAJOR implications. If officially a candidate, can use candidate status to curry favor with PACs, businesses, other organizations. Because he’s acting as Trump the candidate, not Trump the president. Different rules apply. Even more importantly - completely changes how non profits can handle him. 501c3’s cannot “campaign” or risk losing nonprofit status. It means they can’t speak negatively about him. Imagine @PPact having to convey risk to #PlannedParenthood w/ limits on how to address. This throws nonprofits’ strategy for next few years into chaos. They must figure out how to work against Trump w/o “campaigning.“ And further muddies the already swampy ethical waters of financial gain, conflicts of interest, and business transactions. Filed 5PM #InaugurationDay2017. 5 HOURS after swearing in. This is what #TheResistance is up against. Diabolical maneuvering to skirt all conventional forms of #resistance. Norms don’t matter; it’s all about finding new ways to silence us. Again, THIS IS NOT NORMAL. Stay vigilant, stay ready to fight. We’re going to have to defy our own norms to resist. This is IRS regulation re. 501c3s. They’re smart, creative & used to this, but adds add'l hurdles/potential legal battles they don’t need. To re-clarify: likely motivation is raising $$ and using PACs for propaganda. Nonprofits know what they’re doing. But consider 1/28 events. W/ unprecedented legal/Constitutional challenges & Bannon at helm, don’t rule out attacks on previously held norms re. how non-profs operate. Addendum to thread: after getting more feedback, 501©3 issues are a discussion best had outside of the context of the candidacy filing.”
  4. This has actually come out of Bannon’s mouth: ““I’m a Leninist. Lenin wanted to destroy the state and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.Bannon was employing Lenin’s strategy for Tea Party populist goals. He included in that group the Republican and Democratic Parties, as well as the traditional conservative press.”
  5. Military convoys in Kentucky are driving around the streets flying Trump flags on their tanks.
  6. Cheeto Hitler threatened to send US troops to Mexico to stop “bad hombres down there,” in phone call with Peña Nieto that was supposed to patch things up after The Wall debacle. Let that sink in: The POTUS told the president of Mexico he would invade Mexico. Bannon has also said that he has “no doubt” the US will be at war with China within the next few years. This isn’t funny anymore.
  7. Today Democrats decided to boycott the vote on Price and Mnuchin. Rules say you can’t vote on nominees without at least one person from each party present so Democrats just didn’t show up. The Senate committee went ahead and approved Trump Treasury and Health nominees without Democrats present after GOP unilaterally changed panel’s rules. I’m going to quote this:The GOP just broke major committee’s rules to push through the nominations of Price/Mnuchin. This is an unprecedented break in Senate decorum. This means the Senate GOP are turning the Senate committee’s procedures into House committee’s procedures. This is dangerous because the Senate is the only institution where the minority party has the institutional rules to stop the majority & make itself heard. Madison warned us greatly about the tyranny of the majority. That’s why our democratic system is by design an anti-majoritarian system. That anti-majoritarianism is embedded in the Senate & its rule. This is a clear signal coming from Senate GOP that they are willing to kill the filibuster. Institutionally, American democracy is in a dangerous path where majority means unconstrained & unlimited exercise of power.”
  8. Jeff Sessions, who thinks church/state separation is an “extraconstitutional doctrine” even when the prohibition against the government respecting the establishment of religion is literally the first thing in the Bill of Rights, has been approved as Attorney General by the Senate Committee. This is the same man who praised a law that singled out Jews and Asians, and made it harder for them to immigrate to the US.
  9. Republican Congressional staffers, without telling their bosses, are working secretly with Trump aides. This is straight up insane. Let me repeat: the Legislative branch secretly working with the executive branch is a serious violation of separation of powers. I mean, you have the House Judiciary staff working with the WH on Executive Orders without telling their leaders or bosses because they signed NDAs and you’re seriously trying to tell me the system is working? “A Congress that allows its staff to be secretly, contractually obligated to the White House is no longer a Congress.”
  10. Wildly respected political historians are sounding the alarms and analyzing the potential outcome of of Bannon & Co creating “shock events”. Read the whole thing.
  11. The State Department has been purged and now the WH is telling anyone with a different opinion to just up and quit. Even if that doesn’t happen you now have three people with no political experience and some really fucked up worldviews leading it: Tillerson, Bannon, and Miller. Is that not concerning?
  12. Tiny Hands decided that he is going to freeze out an entire news outlet because he deems it “fake news”.
  13. Canadian politicians are calling Trump a fascist in Parliament.
  14. His sons, who supposedly handle the businesses he promised to divest from but hasn’t, are directly involved in government even after he promised they wouldn’t be. This is against the law yet where were they last night? Front row at the SCOTUS pick announcement.
  15. Trump has, is, and will continue to receive payments from foreign governments. That is a violation of the emoluments clause on the constitution. No one on the GOP seems too concerned about it.
  16. There are Customs and Border Patrol agents openly and brazenly defying court orders that have yet to be held accountable by the criminal justice system.
  17. “Bannon is making sure there is no paper trail” of National Security Council debates & decision.
  18. Yates is the first AG to be fired since Elliot Richardson was fired by Nixon in 1973. This isn’t something that happens every day. That should tell you everything you need to know, but since you clearly don’t want to listen to reason then maybe listen to what the former DOJ spokesman Matthew Miller has to say about this mess“This kind of assault on DOJ’s independence has not happened since the Saturday night massacre. The president thinks he is above the law. In our democracy, the president is not supposed to dictate to the AG how to interpret the law. This is a major breakdown in the rule of law. A president who fires an AG over this will think he can fire an AG over, say, a probe into whether his campaign coordinated w/ Russia. Also, the next U.S. atty in line of succession was not Boente, but Zach Fardon. Did Trump go forum shopping for one who would follow orders? No matter what you think about the EO, the independence of DOJ is a principle that everything else in our democracy depends on. Sessions simply can’t be confirmed in this environment. At the minimum, he needs a whole new hearing to answer q’s about DOJ independence. But in reality, we now need an AG who is entirely independent from Trump, not one who was a member of his campaign.”
  19. The DNC has straight up called Trump “tyrannical”.
  20. Trump wants to make counter-extremism program focus solely on Islamic extremism. Basically he wants the government to stop going after Neo-Nazis or any other domestic hate group.
  21. Anti-protester propaganda linked with blatant anti-semitism has gone mainstream.
  22. This statement by brilliant political journalist Sarah Kendzior who has spent her life covering authoritarian regimes and has basically predicted the Trump administration down to every detail for months now: “You should not be surprised at pace of admin’s destruction. You should be thinking many steps ahead, which means thinking fast, acting now. Speed of changes happening for two reasons: temperament and ideology. Trump spent 40 years making fast decisions, having others bail him out. Trump has always surrounded himself with actors to mitigate his damage quickly and often illegally, from Cohn to mafia to, now, Bannon. Difference with Bannon is that speed itself is an ideology. He is a sociopathic accelerationist who has said he will destroy US + will try. Those in power need to act quickly to preserve what institutions can check them before those institutions are destroyed, esp judiciary […] You will need to predict moves far in advance – and act with far more moral conviction and far less blind faith – to preserve this nation.”
  23. American citizens are being detained at airports and being asked if they love their country. People are being asked for the social media handles by CBP at airports and being checked to see if they post anything Anti-Trump. Canadians were turned away at the border the day of the Women’s March because they told CBP they were coming to protest Trump. CBP denied them entry and told them they would need visas to come back.
  24. Trump is signing shit without even consulting the departments the EOs affect: “As President Trump signed a sweeping executive order on Friday, shutting the borders to refugees and others from seven largely Muslim countries, the secretary of homeland security was on a White House conference call getting his first full briefing on the global shift in policy.Gen. John F. Kelly, the secretary of homeland security, had dialed in from a Coast Guard plane as he headed back to Washington from Miami. Along with other top officials, he needed guidance from the White House, which had not asked his department for a legal review of the order.Halfway into the briefing, someone on the call looked up at a television in his office. “The president is signing the executive order that we’re discussing,” the official said, stunned.”

I’ve only mostly covered the last three days worth of news and I already hit two dozen points. I think I’m going to stop there but trust me I got a treasure trove more where that came from. I read policy news all day, every day. I am very well educated on what’s happening and I’m telling you, you’re dead wrong.

Click on all the links and read this one too. When you’re done come back to me and tell me how great this “democracy” is working out for you.

and that’s not even touching the rampant anti-blackness in south asian immigrant communities. like people will come here knowing little else except that black people are ‘not to be trusted’ and ‘not to be made friends with’ etc etc.

like you’ll have twats on youtube making videos exploiting the anti-blackness of their parents for cheap laughs, making videos about how their parents are afraid of their black friends, how they react to hip hop, how it’s such a FUNNY prank to tell your parents that you’re dating a black person and filming their reaction when they flip out because it’s soooooo funny and not at all horrific and sad and fucking shitty.

like i’ve had friends who have purposefully refused to invite black people to their houses, even the ones they’ve been “friends” with for a long time, because their parents won’t allow them into their house. and these are the same parents who talk shit abt immigration, and the same ones that complain the most abt white people. i mean again, how far does your head have to be up your ass that you don’t realize the blatant hypocrisy of being this way?

Zimbits:

They both try to volunteer and have the other one sleep. “You have an upcoming roadies honey, get some sleep” “No Bits, you have to be up early at the bakery, I got her” and they both end up getting up and checking on the baby together. These two.

Holsom:

They switch off each night (it is marked on a calendar and you are allowed three trade days per month). Sometimes when Ransom crawls back into bed at an ungodly hour Holster tries to give him a sleepy fist bump and ends up nearly giving him a black eye.

Shardo:

Shitty is just?? So impressed?? That Lardo birthed a HUMAN!? He gets up 10/10 times, he’s a nocturnal thing anyway and enjoys sitting in the rocking chair and waxing about the problems with there being a Christmas tree in the White House if we are really going for the separation of church and state

Charmer

Chowder leaps out of bed, even if it is to bring the baby back to Caitlin to nurse. Even sleep deprived Chowder is a delight to be around because for every yawn he does, he will show you a new picture of his baby.

NurseyDex

“Baaaaaabe”

“No. It’s your turn.”

“I will give you $5,000 if you do it”

“Don’t need it, I married a trust fund boy.”

(And then Nursey puts his cold feet on Dex’s thigh and Dex shoves him and he nearly topples out of bed and Nursey complains the whole walk down to the nursery. Dex falls back asleep to the sound of Nursey’s gentle voice over the baby monitor and reminds himself to make a ‘nursey in the nursery’ joke in the morning)

White Houses

“What?” Jughead just stared at the beautiful blonde, her eyes sad but excited. He was still sleeping, that had to be it. This was all a dream.

“I’m running away.” She repeated, her soft voice breaking him from his thoughts, she allowed herself a minute to smile at his absolutely awestruck stare “I mean it’s not gonna be for forever, just the summer. You’re the only person I’m telling this too, I trust you Juggie, I know you won’t tell anyone. Not even Archie.” She warned gently, her eyes scanning his face for any sign of a reaction. “Juggie?” She whispered.

Suddenly he realized exactly what was going on, she was leaving. She was leaving him. On her own? All on her own out in the real world? Sure Riverdale was scary but outside of their tiny town? It was dangerous.

“Where are you going to go? Where are you planning on staying? You’re mom is gonna lose her mind! When are you going?” He rushed out, desperate to know her entire plan.

She waited for him to finish, watched him take a breath before she began answering his questions.

“I’m going to North Carolina. My uncle Chick, he has a summer house down there, no ones using it this summer. he promised not to tell my mother, I’m gonna have the whole place to myself. Oh Juggie it’s right on the lake, it’s so beautiful. As for my mom, she won’t know. I’ll leave a note telling her I’m okay and not to look for me but after that? It’s up to her how she handles it. I…I…” she moved to stand right in front of the skittish boy, resting a hand on his chest. “I have to do this Juggie. I…I need this.” Her eyes were filled with unshed tears and she was smiling at Jughead with such hope, he was rendered speechless. He wrapped his arms around her tiny waist and sighed softly into her hair.

“When do you leave? I’d like to be there to see you off atleast.” He answered her, his brain churning.

“Tommorow morning, after mom leaves for work. Bright and early.” She smiled at her own plan.

Jughead grabbed her hand pulling her along.
“Alright then let me treat you to your last pops milkshake for a while.” Betty giggled but followed anyway.

The night passed in a blur for Jughead, he hadn’t slept all night, too busy planning. Betty hadn’t slept either, the nerves and excitement getting to her. Sure enough, at exactly 8:02, she heard her mothers engine start and the car pull out of the driveway. She didn’t have time to waste. Pulling her bags behind her, she raced down the stairs, quickly opening and shutting the front door. She took a sad moment to stare at the house that haunted her so much, she would miss it, it wouldn’t be for long but it seemed to be all she knew, the pain that house held. Waving at the big White House, she took a deep Breath and turned around.

What the hell?

Standing there, leaning against her car were her best friends, suitcases packed and sweatpants on. Veronica stepped forward first

“Road trips are so in this season, give me those keys girls we need to start loading this car.”
Betty just stared, handing her the keys in a daze. Kevin dragged Cheryl along with him,

“we want the back seats, we need our beauty sleep. This timing is unbearable.” He yawned, winking at Betty, Cheryl moved to stand beside her “I need this too Betty, thanks for letting me come, I know we haven’t been best friends, but it means something to me.” She patted her on the shoulder delicately, walking away. Archie moved to her grabbing her in a bear hug and whispering in her ear

“We’re all here for you, no matter what goes down, you’re not going through it alone.” He then called to Ronnie “no! You’re gonna crush my guitar!” Sprinting to the trunk of her mini van.

Finally she spotted the familiar beanie as it walked towards to her

“Don’t be angry.” He started.

Betty tried to dim her smile “Jughead” she whispered.

He was scratching the back of his neck “I’m sorry, I know this is awful, but I couldn’t let you do this on your own. All those people, well minus Cheryl, they love you. They want to help you, just…don’t hate me.” He glanced at his shoes when he suddenly felt the skinny little tan arms wrapping around his waist

“Thankyou Jughead, this is the nicest thing anyones ever done for me.” She whispered into his chest.

Jughead finally released the breath he had been holding and leaned his chin on top of her head “anytime Betty, anytime.”

Suddenly they were disrupted by the beeping of a horn
“Come on love birds, were burning daylight, we’ve got quite a journey ahead of us.” Archie shouted from the front seat.

Jughead and Betty laughed as the dark haired boy threw an arm around the blondes shoulders
“You heard the man” she giggled “let’s do this!”

Jughead smiled

“Let’s do this.”

Hello! So I was scouring the Internet for advice today but I couldn't find any on this topic. My problem isn't that I don't have any ideas (I probably have too many) but the problem is that I don't LOVE any of my ideas. I like them. I think they're all fine ideas. But liking them isn't going to motivate me long enough to finish a novel. How can I give my ideas that extra uumph to make me love them? How can I figure out what's missing or why I don't feel this way about any of my ideas?

Hello, nonny!  What a challenging question…  This one’s been in my inbox a couple days, just because it’s such a big question.  But I’ve thought it over and I think I have some ideas for you :)

The Thrill Is Gone – How to Find It Again

So generally, there’s no one answer or cure-all to this problem.  I’ve had this issue multiple times, with different causes.  My first novel didn’t have enough meat to the plot; my second novel had been over-planned in my head to the point that it no longer excited me.  My third novel had way too much plot, so that by the time I got ¾ the way through, I’d written over 200K words and felt sick of the idea.  I started my fourth novel way too soon, and am now going back and planning it more!  So there are obviously many different reasons that a story doesn’t take off (or dries up eventually).

The first step is to figure out what’s missing, like you said.  There are a few aspects of your story to assess…

1. Plot

I’m discussing plot first because, to me, it’s the most important part of fiction.  Plot, conflict, and stakes are foremost to my stories.  You could have the most complex and sympathetic characters, but without plot, they’re static and become boring.  But for some reason, this is the part of story ideas that new authors neglect most!

So if your story has great characters and an immersive setting, but you can’t get into it, try asking a few questions about your plot:

  • What is the point of the plot?  What’s the message you’re conveying in the story?  Even if your story isn’t an allegory or a metaphor or the next Chronicles of Narnia, there should always be a conclusion to which all plots arrive – otherwise, the story can feel aimless.  The best way to find your message is to look at the conflicts involved (e.g. Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, etc.) and find the “winner”.  What worldview, belief, or concept “defeats” the other concepts?  It can be as simple as Good vs. Evil, or more complex, like Loving the Sincere Drug Addict vs. Settling for the Selfish Dentist (provokes the question “Is love worth danger in relationships?”).
  • Does the plot have ups and downs?  And really consider both ends of the spectrum here.  Stories become dull if they are made up of victory after victory – or if they’re made up of nothing but loss and tragedy.  No matter the genre, you have to strike some sort of balance, lest the story become predictable and emotionally non-engaging.  Find victories and failures, even in unassuming places, to keep readers invested and hopeful.
  • Do you have a satisfactory ending?  Or do you have the ending     planned yet?  I’ve found that I can’t really commit to an idea unless I see a resolution – otherwise I feel too nervous to start.  If you do have an ending planned, make sure it’s the right ending.  It can feel like there’s one possible conclusion, and once you’ve found it, you stick to it – but question it, brainstorm it.  It may not be a happy ending every time, but when you find the right one, you’ll know it.
  • Do you have the right plot at all?  Look at your story as a whole.  Does it start too early or too late, relative to the real meat,     the real action?  Is it told from the most impactful POV?  Does the plot cover too much ground for one book, or is it not enough to fill the pages?  Consider all the characters, backstories, and subplots you have, and ask yourself if any of them are more interesting than the main plot.  If so, shift your focus.  Use them instead.

2. Characters

Maybe it’s not your plot that’s going sideways.  Maybe you have it all worked out – the head, the tail, the whole damn thing – but it still doesn’t feel right.  It doesn’t feel like it’s coming to life, somehow.  It feels flat.

That can be a character problem.  It would be like sitting by the campfire and hearing the most fascinating, horrifying story, except it’s told by a man with The Most Boring Voice Who Talks So Incredibly Slowly and Takes All the Fun Out of Everything.  An example: The Hunger Games.  Those books bored the crap out of me.  Unless someone was being killed or Haymitch and Effie were interacting, I just didn’t care.  And those books had a great plot behind them!

So here’s what you need for a good cast of characters:

  • A solid protagonist.  Solid = three-dimensional, empathetic, and relatable; having a goal, an internal conflict, a self-image, and fears or shame.  They should have different facets of themselves – their head and their heart, their desires and doubts, and that little voice in their head that says, “Give up on that.  Be realistic.”  Give them strengths, weaknesses, and a couple of bad habits, for kicks.
  • A variety of supporting characters.  You don’t have to have thirty characters + six secret characters stuffed under your trench coat; but with however many characters you have, make them as different from each other as possible.  Give them some similarities, of course, so that they can relate to each other – but never make them so close together that you have to decide, “Who should say this line?  Character A or Character B?”  Make them unique enough that the words come out of their mouths, instead of you having to decide where to put the words, yourself.
  • Relationships, relationships, relationships.  And I’m not talking about romantic relationships.  I mean, sure, those too – but there are many different kinds of relationships to explore.  Friendships, enemy-ships (?), parent relationships, sibling-ships, silent alliances, “annoying friend-of-a-friend”-ships, “my-ex’s-little-sister”-ships, “you’re-the-ruler-of-the-galaxy-and-a-Sith-lord-but-also-my-dad-please-stop-being-evil”-ships…  You get the idea.  Make them unique, make them strong, and allow them to evolve over the course of the story.
  • Diverse morals, interests, and personalities.  My first short stories focused on white middle-class people who were culturally and politically identical.  They lived in one house, usually, and watched the same TV shows and made the same references.  They had the same sense of humor.  They rarely disagreed on anything that wasn’t clear-cut (e.g. “You drank the last Pepsi!”  “I was thirsty!”).  So do yourself a favor and don’t make my mistakes.  Give your characters unique ethics, cultures, backgrounds, personalities, goals, appearances, and conflicts.  You’ll be more invested by then, I’m sure.

3. Setting

Lastly, I’d like to add that while your characters and plot could be well-developed, there’s always a chance that they’re placed in the wrong setting.  This is why many story ideas can seem great, but won’t get off the ground – maybe they’re set in a pre-made universe like Middle Earth or Panem when they could be their own story.  Maybe your tragic romance is set in the middle of apocalyptic war, when instead, it should be drained down to a period piece.  Maybe your story is perfect, except you’re writing it too close to home – in the real world, in the present year.  There are a million factors to picking the right setting, including:

  • Applicable history and culture.  If you’re writing a story about someone who’s oppressed, or someone who’s a politician, or someone who’s a witch, you’re going to need to back that up with history.  Develop a history for the oppression or politics or witchcraft – where these things began, how they developed over time – and a culture for them now – how oppressed people survive and how witches in your world interact, etc.
  • Imaginative scenery, influenced by the characters.  Even if your story takes place in New York City in 2017, allow your characters’ living spaces and workplaces to have a unique touch – colors and quirks that your readers can see in their mind.  If even you can’t see what you’re writing, inspiration is going to be difficult to find.
  • A lifelike background.  Just because the plot focuses on your characters does not mean everything going on behind it should be quiet and dead.  Anyone who looks out a window in a city building can see other people living – people on the highway will see other cars taking other people other places.  Everyone who has a friend will hear a little something about their friend’s siblings, their friend’s friends, their friend’s neighbors.  Life and stories exist outside of your plot; make sure you’re not writing about a ship in a bottle.
  • An aesthetic.  That sounds gross and teen-tumblr-y, but let me tell you personally: I don’t feel truly ready to write (and love) my story until I can hear the music for the future movie adaptation – until I can see the kind of clothes the people wear, the games they play, the places they eat and shop.  I think of the colors and themes in my scenes (e.g. my first novel was set primarily at night in a grunge/city setting; my current novel is very green and outdoorsy and gives me that feeling of bonfires just after sunset).  Once you get that “feeling” from your story, you’ll know it.

Anyway, this reply took me like three days to write because I really wanted to get into it.  I hope some of this helps you to fall in love with one of your ideas, so you can get started :)  If you have any more questions, be sure to send them in!

(I have 26 questions in the inbox, though, so be patient with me…)

If you need advice on writing, fanfiction, or NaNoWriMo, you should maybe ask me!

Behind her sunglasses, a few tears began to fall as she pushed herself to keep walking forward.

“Excuse me, are you alright?” a soft voice said from behind her. Turning quickly and stumbling, Y/N found her nose almost buried in a white button-up. Two strong hands grabbed her arms to steady her and then quickly released. Part 1 Part 2

Things had changed since that night. Drastically. Snape was headmaster, you skipped most of your classes, curled up in the room of requirements with a good book, and Deatheaters and dementors were constantly around the school. Draco had not spoken to you since that night. You were sure that he held you accountable for his pain, you didn’t blame him. It was your fault. Or perhaps he finally realized you’re not worth his time. Or maybe he was actually just pretending to be kind to you so you didn’t foil his stupid plan. Though not actually knowing hurt more than you thought it would. How could you fix what’s wrong when you don’t know why he’s not around. All you can do is thrive on the mistakes you might have made along the way.

You were in your dorm room now, putting on your uniform and getting ready to face another day. You ran your fingers through your white hair in an effort to comb out some tangles before heading off to Dark Arts, which they had now instituted upon Snape’s rise to being headmaster. You still didn’t have a wand, you weren’t allowed to leave the property… you all were practically hostages in this damned castle. Though even if you were released… what would you have to go back to? A shitty foster family and a lonely town? Being here was no doubt better than going back to that hellhole.

Upon a last glance in the mirror, you headed out into the common room of your house, walking right through, ignoring all the people around you giving you awkward sideways glances.

While on your way to what was previously the Defense Against the Dark Arts room, an eagle owl swooped above your head and dropped something right on the floor in front of you. You were tempted to just leave it, how could it have been yours? No one ever owls you, mostly because no one has anything to say to you. Though something in you was telling you that no owl was irresponsible enough to leave a message with the wrong person.

You reached down and picked up the envelope off the floor, flipping it around in your hand, looking to see if it was addressed to anyone, though you found no ink on the outside of it. It wasn’t even sealed, simply tucked in as if the person had been in a hurry.

Skeptically, you stuck your thumb into the envelope, popping it open and pulling out the slim paper from within. In hurried, sloppy handwriting was written:

Y/N

Astronomy tower tonight, come if you want. If not, don’t.

It wasn’t signed, but you remembered those words from when you wanted to help Draco. It had to be him. But what if it wasn’t? Either way, you were going to find out.

All day you were itching with anticipation. Could Draco really to the one to reach out to you? Who else would it be? You hardly talk to anyone else. You couldn’t eat all day, your stomach was churning too much to hold down any food.

You didn’t want to seem too eager, but you couldn’t stop yourself from running up the stairs to the astronomy tower after the sun had set. You’d obviously beat the person there because there was no one in sight when you arrived. You felt the cold breeze from the open arches that plummeted down to the ground.

You don’t know what you expected, but no one showed up for a while. Perhaps Draco had backed out, or perhaps it wasn’t him at all and someone was messing with you. Just as you were about to leave, you heard the heavy door to the tower open and close. Your heart skipped a beat, and you were tempted to hide but the best you could do was pull your sleeves over your hands.

Draco seemed shocked to see you as he rounded the corner.

“Y/N.” He breathed out, walking over towards you hurriedly, pulling you into a warm hug. You were limp in his grip. What on earth was he doing? You haven’t spoken in what seems like forever and he’s embracing you now. “Are you alright? I know we haven’t spoken in a bit but you have to understand, I don’t want you to be hurt.” He tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear as he gripped your wrists tightly, causing your eyes to water. He noticed. “Darling are you okay? I’ve never seen you cry.”

You pulled your wrists from his grasp and took steps away from him. he gave you a confused look, running a hand through his hair. You said nothing for a while, you two ended up sitting with your legs dangling over the edge of the astronomy tower window, laying on your backs.

“It’s hot tonight.” He spoke quietly, looking at you. Your eyes were closed and your hair was still blue, so he figured you were awake, “You still have your robes on, you’re sweating.” He sat up and held his hands out, “Come on let’s get you out of that thing.” It took him a moment to discover you were asleep.

He took a deep breath and watched you for a moment, he’d never seen you sad in your sleep before, in your dreams your hair was always a radiant blonde, and you had a small smile on your lips. He’d never gather the strength to ask you about what you were dreaming.

Carefully, he tugged the robes over our shoulders in an effort to keep you cool. He had successfully pulled the silk fabrics from your body, he waited longer to see if that’s done the trick. He watched you closely, your blue hair, your slightly parted lips, the rise and fall of your chest as you laid there, legs dangling in the breeze. Your hands draped lightly on your stomach, rising and falling with each breath. Your nose twitched every now and then, and it was the most adorable thing he’s ever seen.

He watched as beads of sweat continued to build upon your forehead. He sighed, disappointed that removing the robe wasn’t enough. He didn’t want to wake you, but he didn’t want to have you overheat either.

Carefully, he moved your arms, unbuttoning your right sleeve cuff and rolling your sleeve up to your elbow. His heart dropped at the sight of scars on your beautiful skin. How could you do this? He was angry now. He grabbed your other arm more forcefully than before, rolling up the sleeve as you startled awake, fighting your arm away from him.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”You snapped at him, frantically rolling down your sleeves. He fought against you, pulling your arms back to him, forcing your sleeves back up your arms.

“What the hell am I doing?” He shouted at you, “What the fuck are you doing?” He gestured to your wrists. “What the FUCK!” He shouted, you were scared, and your hair reflected that. It did something he’d never seen before, your hair was a dark black. When he realized he was scaring you, he let you go and let you slump away from him. There was no point in rolling your sleeves down, he already knew.

There was silence for a moment. Your eyes were searching the Hogwarts campus, searching for something to watch, some excuse to not have to look at him. Meanwhile, his eyes were watering as he looked down at your wrists. There were old lines, white and fading… then there were vicious red lines, new, only freshly on the mend. You didn’t realize he actually cared until you heard him sniffle. When you looked to him, there was a soft tear falling down his cheek.

“How could you do this Y/N?” He looked up to you, “Why?” He slipped his hand into yours, his eyebrows lacing together, he dropped it instantly and stood up. “How fucking dare you Y/N? You have NO right to do that!” What was he talking about? You had every right… you had the only right. You got angry fast, your hair turning a fiery red. Malfoy was not phased, he was too angry to be worried about you snapping at him.

“You’re one to talk!” You shouted at him, standing up to get on the same level. “You’ve sold yourself to Voldemort for fuck’s sake! You’re telling me I don’t have a right to my body but you do? You’re fucking ridiculous.”

“This isn’t about me, Y/N, it’s about you, and it’s about how you’re so fucking broken and I can’t do anything about it!” He shouted, taking steps closer to you. You would have been worried that someone would hear the two of you if you hadn’t been so angry. “I can’t do shit! I do everything I can! I’m around you and you’re sad, I give you your space and you’re sad. I don’t know what to do! I want to help you!” He took another step closer, you were only a couple feet from each other. “You won’t let me! Can’t you see I fucking care about you? Get it into your head Y/N, I’m here to stay, even if you don’t want it, even if you’re sad that I am, I’m fucking here for you.” You looked at him angrily, pushing your lips together, crossing your arms in front of you.

“Fuck. You.” You spat the words out like venom.

“If you really want to.” He smirked cheekily. He was still that sneaky bastard you’d known. You were confused, but before you could say or do anything, he put his hands behind your neck and pulled you closer and pressed your lips to his. You melted inside.

He pulled away and looked at you, a tear falling down his cheek again.

“Please… Y/N… I just want to keep you safe. Let me keep you safe.” He spoke softly, bringing your wrist up to his lips and planting a solid kiss. A tear fell to your feet as you cried. No one has cared the way he has. He cared. It was a mix of pain and joy. He looked back up at you and a large smile broke onto his face as he pushed a loose strand of blonde hair away from your face. “There’s my beautiful, happy girl.” You could only giggle and sniffle as you looked into his stunning gray eyes. “I promise, I will be by your side from now on. No more bullshit. You and me. Y/N and Draco against the world.”

Warnings: None))

Thunder boomed above your head as clouds darkened, the simple black sandals on your feet carrying you as fast as could be managed as you ran home. This would be the third storm this month, and the month itself was only half-over. For the time of year it was uncommon to have such chaos thrust into your world. Which would be fine, except your city was still reeling from the earthquake that toppled Ares’ temple. Those who weren’t picking up their homes or burying loved ones had taken to the temples, desperately making offerings and repairing statues.
