10x17 “Inside Man”
Beware of the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing…
I know I am a little late with this and I apologize in advance if this has been talked about extensively already, but I just needed to express my love for the entirety of the Dean “hustling pool”-montage again, because it was so damn well executed
(also may I direct your attention to the bottom gif and how Dean is basically half lieing on the pool table and standing just on one foot).
And to me it made perfect sense to end this scene with Dean looking in the mirror catching himself sporting black eyes - and it is actually not even important whether or not his brain played tricks on him or not or if maybe Rowena had her hands in it - because to me from the moment he ruffled hi hair and went on to play the Abercrombie Rejects Dean was taunting his inner demon to come out.
Of course Dean has been playing this game for more than half his life, he never was so vulnerable as he is now though since he didn’t have a past of being a demon and carrying a mark on his arm that feeds into whatever darkness it can find on the inside. So while previously this was a means to earn money and have some fun, now he is in danger by engaging in such behaviour to activate or trigger a part of himself that enjoys this sort of “playing others” in a way that Demon!Dean enjoyed it.
To me it is endlessly interesting not only to study and look at Dean’s “I’m pretending to be drunk so I can hustle the hell out of you”-routine, but also how his entire posture and the way he carries himself changes. He goes from cute harmless pretend drunk guy to a menacing and calculating “shark” and you could see that change in his eyes as well. It was a process and during that process he sort of “shed his skin”.
As long as he goads the college kids on he keeps his green jacket on, when we revisit the scene later we can see Dean shed the jacket and now is only in his red shirt. The wolf leaving the sheep’s clothing behind. From green to red. To me the message is rather clear. From green (the colour of life, hope and humanity since it matches Dean’s eyey colour and he arguably always was the epitome of humanity) to red (the colour of seduction and danger in it’s negative extremes). It doesn’t take a professor to read that change that way, just compare it to traffic lights for example: green means okay, red means alarm.
So in that regard you could say Dean sort of abandoned his human side to let his “other” side come out to play, when he collects the cash and the watch he takes his jacket with him, keeps his humanity close, but lets the wolf remain without the sheep’s cover.
To me when Dean goes into the bathroom to splash water on his face, it wasn’t purely an action of refreshment, it was a moment of recollection and calming down from the “high” and joy playing the college kids provided. Their horrified faces when realizing that they have been played and are unable to do anything about it, delighted him in a fashion I think would have delighted Demon!Dean as well. So to me it comes to no surprise that when Dean looks into the mirror he sees black eyes - he triggered this side of him to come out, he might have just thought and hoped the demon wasn’t that little below the surface.
And as I said before, I don’t care if this was Rowena messing with him or if it was Dean’s mind messing with him or the real deal - the effect it has on Dean is the same in any regard and him not telling Sam by the end of the episode, just as everybody lied to everybody in this episode, setws the tone for what’s going to come. Nothing good…
