you are beautiful miss evil queen no matter what they say

What we really need is an adaptation of the original 1740 The Beauty and the Beast

So were you aware that the The Beauty and the Beast story we all know is a heavily abridged and rewritten version of a much longer novella by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve?  And that a lot of the plot holes existing in the current versions exist because the 1756 rewrite cut out the second half of the novella, which consisted entirely of the elaborate backstory that explains all the weird shit that happened before?  And that the elaborate backstory is presented in a way that’s kind of boring because the novel had only just been invented in 1740 and no one knew how they worked yet, but contains a bazillion awesome ideas that beg for a modern retelling?  And that you are probably not aware that the modern world needs this story like air but the modern world absolutely needs this story like air?  Allow me to explain:

The totally awesome elaborate backstory that explains Beauty and the Beast

  • Once upon a time there was a king, a queen, and their only son
  • But while the prince was still in his infancy, in a neat reversal of how these fairy tales usually go, the king tragically died, leaving his wife to act as Regent until their son reaches maturity
  • Unfortunately, the rulers of all the lands surrounding them go, “Hmm, the kingdom is ruled by a woman now, it must be weak, time for an invasion!”
  • And the Queen goes, “Well, if I let some general fight all these battles for me, he’ll totally amass enough fame and power to make a bid for the throne; if I want to protect my son’s crown, I have no choice but to take up arms and lead the troops myself!
  • (Btw, I want to stress that this woman is not Eowyn or Boudica and nothing in the way her story is presented suggests that she had any interest martial exploits before or in any way came to enjoy them during these battles.  This is a perfectly ordinary court lady who would much rather be embroidering altar covers for the royal chapel and playing with her child until necessity made her go, “Oh no, this sucks, I guess I have to become a Warrior Queen now” and she just happened to kick ass at it anyway.)
  • And the Queen totally kicked ass, but the whole “twice as good for half the credit” thing meant that no matter how many battles she won, potential enemies refused to take her and her army seriously until she had defeated them so no sooner would she fend off one invasion than another one would pop up on a different border.
  • So she spent the majority of her young son’s life away from the castle leading armies, but it was OK because she left him in the care of her two best friends, who just happen to be fairies!  This was an awesome idea because a) fairies have magic, and therefore are like the best people to protect the prince from any threats and b) fairies consider themselves to be so above humanity that the lowest fairy outranks the highest mortal, so they’d have no interest in taking a human throne.  Good thing they were both good fairies instead of one good and one evil one!
  • (Spoiler:  they were not both good fairies.)
  • So the two fairies basically take turns raising the prince until he’s old enough to rule.  And on the eve of his twenty-first birthday, the evil older one comes into the prince’s bedroom.
  • “So listen, kid.  You’re about to become king, your mother’s on her way home from the war to see you crowned, and I have a third piece of good news for you!  You see, I’ve actually been spending so much time here lately because Fairyland’s become a bit too hot to hold me for reasons totally not related to me being secretly evil.  And if I have to hang in the human world, I might as well reside in the upper echelons of it, so even though as a powerful fairy I completely eclipse your puny human status in a staggeringly unimaginable way, since you’re about to be king and since my premonition that I should stick this whole guardianship thing out because you would be hot one day has totally proved accurate (go me), I will graciously lower myself to allowing you to marry me.  Please feel free to grovel at my feet in gratitude.  (Btw, we can totally start the wedding night now, we’ll tell your mother about it when she arrives tomorrow.)”

Truth: Arrow 5x20 Review (Underneath)

Arrow isn’t a perfect television show. To be fair, I don’t know one that is, but I never needed Arrow to be perfect.  All I need from Arrow is a good story.  My frustrations with Oliver and Felicity’s break up, and the Baby Mama storyline, aren’t a secret. I found their break up to be wildly problematic on multiple levels. However, the one caveat I always held to was if Arrow can piece together some interesting character growth for Oliver and Felicity it would go a long way of easing my ruffled feathers. We’ve been dealing with the ramifications of Oliver’s lie about William since 4x08. That’s 35 episodes. We’ve waited a long time for Oliver and Felicity’s individual arcs to come to fruition.

The wait was worth it. At least for me.

Our perceptions of “good story” vary as widely as our perceptions of “perfect” but “Underneath” is a good story for me.  It’s almost perfect. 35 episodes. This road was long. It was hard but, in the end, I feel like I understand. It connects all the dots that need to be connected (and some I didn’t expect) while delivering some real character development that feels earned.

In the midst of the crazy world of arrows, masks, Mirakuru soldiers, 15 different canaries and Barry Allen resides the relationships between Oliver and Felicity

and Original Team Arrow.

These characters, and the love they have for one another, is the sanity in all the madness. It’s the real in the fiction. Oliver, Felicity and Diggle are the beating heart of Arrow for a reason. The love we have for these characters is the reason we watch and “Underneath” returns Arrow to center. It focuses on the love stories that made us fall in love with the show. In particularly, it brings Oliver and Felicity’s individual arcs to fruition and FINALLY merges their roads into one again.

Trust. Honesty. Forgiveness. Compassion. Humility. These aren’t always popular concepts in our society, but they are the building blocks to any relationship. You lose one, the whole house can come down on you. Love feels like it has its own inertia, like it chooses you and not the other way around. And maybe that’s true. Maybe we can’t choose who we love.  However, we can choose how we love.

If you are either Team Felicity or Team Oliver in the break-up- Baby-Mama-drama then there’s probably things about “Underneath” you didn’t like. As for me, I believe there are things both Oliver and Felicity need to learn from the breakup and “Underneath” addresses those things. But more than anything, I am ready for Arrow to rebuild what they broke. I am ready for Arrow to fix it. Are you?

Buckle up. This is, by far, my longest review. We’re going all the way back to the pilot and discuss about five different episodes. This took me about 22 hours to write. No need to comment on how long it is. I am well are.

Let’s dig in…

Highlights from the Lana Parrilla and Sean Maguire panel at Storytelling Con, Barcelona, April 22, 2017

  • Lana came in first…..
  • Did she prank someone on set:  “Well I stole Rebecca’s dog.  She was not happy about that.  But she stole my chocolates so I thought it was fair to steal her puppy.  It was my Wicked Witch moment.  I stole her Toto.”
  • Which Meryl Streep movie would you like to have been in:  Mama Mia, the Deer Hunter, the Devil Wear’s Prada.
  • FMK:  F Emma, M Zelena, K Rumple.  “I would sleep with myself, I’d marry the Evil Queen, and I’d kill my mother.  Nooooo.  That doesn’t make anyone happy.”
  • Favorite con activities:  “I love the meet and greets because they’re really intimate and you get to learn a little bit more about my people.  Those are my favorite moment.  Also just hearing people’s stories.  These are fun.  I like the panels because I like the energy.  And it’s just fun because I get to see everyone and hear everyone, feel your energy and hear your voices and your shouting, your cheering, it’s electrifying.”
  • What was it like meeting Johnny Depp:  She was seven all over again, and she had a crush on Johnny Depp during 21 Jump Street.  She was starstruck and fangirled and looked stupid in that picture.
  • What has she learned from Regina or the Evil Queen:  “I’ve learned a lot of lessons.  And a lot of similar lessons that a lot of you have learned from these characters because they are very inspiring women.  One a little bit more than the other.  But even the Evil Queen I’ve learned lessons from her in what not to do.  And with Regina just always striving to be the best me I could be for myself and others.  That’s probably the biggest lesson.  Sounds cheesy but it’s not.”
  • What is it like to live with four boys:  Fun, loud, energetic, with a lot going on.
  • Best advise to give to your fans:  “Be kind to one another.  No more segregation, no more separation, no more hate, no more bullshit, I mean there is a lot of that happening in the world.  Why would you want to be part of that?  So especially in social media I see all the negative banters back and forth and it’s just… I just recommend if you get the impulse to want to say something really shitty to someone … go do something else.”
  • Sean Maguire joined at this point….
  • What is your favorite one liner:  “I love fillet the bitch.  I just think it’s so fun to say.”
  • They took a picture with an OQ banner presented to them by fans.
  • What would they as their characters use to describe the other…
    • Lana:  “Chivalrous, Smells like Forest, Handsome, Father, Loving…”
    • Sean:  “Dynamic, Stunning, Courageous, Beautiful, Powerful.”
  • What do you think the EQ and Robin are up to in the wish realm?  “I know what they’re up to but we can’t say. […] I think they’re having a really good time.”
  • Question about how Robin and Regina never said I love you on the show:  They both seem surprised that they did not.
    • Sean:  “Well if that’s the case it’s an oversight on our part or the writers part or they’re really holding out to do that line.  He’s already dead and you are still holding out?”
    • Lana:  “I feel like they had to have said it…”
    • Sean:  “I think you’re right… […] it’s because Robin and Regina are really shy…  But did you get the sense that we both felt that?  [Audience affirmative]  Well then we did our job.”
    • Lana:  “I’m here to tell you all that Regina and Robin Hood loved each other.”
    • Sean:  “We certainly did.”
  • Lana declines to sing again… which … she does a lot at cons.
  • First impressions:
    • Sean:  “Lana was the one on my first day, Lana was one of the first actors on the show to say hi to me and welcome me to the show.  So I was really … it’s like the first day at school and when someone who has been there a while welcomes you it makes you feel really relaxed.  So I was very, I loved her straight off the bat, I was like ‘oh she’s nice.  We’ll get along well.’ not knowing we’d end up working together.
    • Lana:  “I saw Sean before he saw me and I felt a warmth and a kindness and a sensitive sweet soul and you can see it.  And I thought that’s my Robin Hood.  So I went and introduced myself.  And I knew we’d get along.  And Sean knows this I’ve told him this a million times he’s been like an angel for me on the show and I love him so much.  And I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful, beautiful, love interest, co-star, friend, we really enjoy working with each other and I was so glad he came back this season.  Honestly when Sean’s not there it’s weird.  He brings so much light and laughter, he is, he makes everyone, the crew smile, everyone laugh, he’s missed.”
  • Does Regina think Emma is too good for Hook:
    • Lana:  “Ahhh I mean I feel like Regina … I feel like I’m going to say yes for them but honestly I think that Hook has come a long way …”
    • [At this point the audience starts making noise…]
    • Lana:  “Shhhhh do you want to answer the question or do you want me to answer the question?  You may not like my answers but that’s okay, it’s still my answer.”
    • [Moderator/Translator:  “Drop the mic.”]
    • Lana:  “So I think that Hook has come a long way.  I don’t think that Regina necessarily likes him very much.  She tolerates him.  And she supports her friend.  All the Swan Queens are going …”
    • [Moderator/Translator goes ‘Swan Queens chill’]
    • Lana:  “I have to look at the story as it’s written so I’m answering the question as the character and what is written.  And I don’t think she really cares for Hook.  She’s always sarcastic, she’s always belittling him, she puts up with him, and if he makes Emma happy she’s happy.  Now I’ve lost all those fans…”
    • [Moderator/Translator :  “No you haven’t.”]
    • Lana:  “I’m just kidding.  I know I haven’t.”
  • Future projects:
    • Lana:  “Well we don’t know if there is a season seven.  So we don’t know what is going to happen but we’ll see.  In the meantime there is a lot to catch up on in life.  We’ve been working on Once for six years so … it’s important to take time for yourself and to try and try to reconnect and try to get some things done on a personal level.  Who knows what lies ahead.”
    • Sean:  “The show finishes filming around April … and those going back go back in July and Lana and I and a lot of the cast in that time travel around the world.  We go to Brazil we go to Paris which we love and we’ve had an amazing time meeting all the wonderful fans.  But it sometimes doesn’t leave us a lot of time to do the personal things that we want to do…”
    • Lana:  “No rest for the wicked.  But we’ll see.  I hope you follow us no matter where we go.”
  • Best day of your life:
    • Lana:  Being born.
    • Sean:  When his son was born.  Lana and Ginny told the assistant director to send him home when he showed up to work the day after his son was born.
Between the lines

This one’s a little fluffier. I hope you like it! A series of missing scenes set during 3B. Based on/around Captain Swan.

Moment 4: She’ll come to you

During 3x16 - Tink gives Hook some advice and Emma seeks him out.

Murmurs began to fill the silence around them as people started to retreat from the graveside. Emma remained firmly where she stood, Henry at her side as they both stared at the casket below.

Killian couldn’t bear to see her in pain. His own memories of having to bury loved ones spurred him towards wanting to help her; to take away the loss one feels when saying goodbye. He wanted for her to not have to know that emptiness. She’d been through too much already and he was worried for her.

He wanted to comfort her.

“Are you alright, Emma?” he asked gently, stepping forward to be closer to her side.

“I’m fine.”

Her automatic response told him she was neither fine, nor aware of who she’d actually spoken to; too lost in her thoughts to be aware of anyone around her.

“We’re heading over to Granny’s for the wake. You should come.” Snow’s voice addressed him.

The princess was beside him, placing her hand on his forearm; David standing supportive behind her. Her voice lowered, making sure only he could hear. “Give them some time alone.”

Snow wasn’t hostile; Killian knew what she meant. They needed time to grieve in private.

As a family.

“Of course.”

He nodded to them both before stepping back and turning, following the direction of the crowd making it’s way back towards town. He couldn’t help turning to look back, seeing Emma still in her frozen state, Henry by her side, and her parents hovering back a little, waiting for her to come back to them.

“Are you okay?”

He turned sharply, startled by the voice concerned for his wellbeing. Tink appeared, watching him with worry on her face.

“Aye, love. I’m getting there.” he managed to smile, walking with the tiny woman towards town.

“She’ll be fine, you know. She just needs some time right now.”

“I’m well aware of that, thank you.” He didn’t mean to snap at the fairy but the need for people to interfere and tell him what to do was becoming tiresome.

“I know you still love her.” she continued, ignoring his irritation.

When I found out that 6x20 was going to be the musical/wedding episode, I decided to re-watch 1x20, since there have been a lot of elements of season 1 in this current season.

What I have noticed from it was that there are indeed a few elements that have already been paralleled in the show so far; and others that could be very telling of what might happen in the remaining episodes.

The elements already being paralleled:

First of all, the episode is titled “The Stranger”, and it tells us the story of Pinocchio; which has been brought back this season already.

Most precisely it shows us how Marco built the wardrobe, and how August got to our world. We have already seen this paralleled in Season 6, with wish realm August building the wardrobe to allow Emma and Regina to go back to Storybrooke.

What I found interesting is how the Blue Fairy kept saying that its magic was only powerful enough to transport 2 people, but then she wanted Snow (carrying Emma) and Charming to go through it. Does that mean that when Emma and Regina went through it this Season and brought back Robin was kind of the same thing it would’ve happened if the original plans had gone through? Is Robin “part of” either Regina or Emma, and that means only 2 people actually went through it? Or is it because Robin, as everyone else keeps reminding Regina, is not real?

Another thing was August telling Emma about where he was when she decided to stay in Storybrooke, and he does it in these terms:

August: You ever been to Phuket? It’s beautiful. Amazing Island. Full of pleasures. The perfect place to lose oneself. That’s where I was when you decided to stay in Storybrooke.

Amazing island. Full of pleasure = Pleasure Island? Which has been brought back up again in 6x12. And 6x11, if you take a look at what August is writing with his typewriter.

In both episodes (6x12 and 1x20) the pages August has added are mentioned. In 1x20 Henry notices that Pinocchio’s story isn’t completed, and then later on August tells Emma he was telling her how the story ended. But then in 6x12, he tells Charming that he was ashamed of that part of his story, that’s why he hasn’t included it in the book.

This has been told already, but I really think August represents Regina somehow.

In the episode of Season 1, they both tell the story of how they respectively found Emma and Charming. It’s interesting how August tells Emma he is going to tell her his story (the story of how he was the boy who found her in the newspaper) and the next scene we see Regina and David, and she tells him the story of how she found him.

August: “We’re going on a trip, Emma.” who has been going on road trips with Emma so far?

I also noticed another two parallels between the two (Regina and August)

When we see August and Emma at the forest home, we see August being yelled at by an adult for touching the toolbox. That immediately reminded me how in 5x19 Cora tells Regina not to touch the box containing the wand.

Both stories end with the redhead (August/Zelena) leaving Emma/Regina. Zelena, we know was Regina’s half sister, and in the foster home Emma might have as well been considered August’s “sister”.

Then at the beginning of the episode, Mary Margaret tells Regina this: “Your life must be filled with such incredible loneliness if your only joy comes from destroying everyone else’s happiness.”

And at the end, August tells Marco this: “I just feel like fixing things.”

Which at first could be seen as a contrast, but if you see August/Regina as the same person, it looks more like a reaction.

As for what I think could happen in the next episodes:

Snowing vs the Evil Queen

Snow will come back from the curse the Evil Queen has put her and Charming under, just as in 1x20 Mary Margaret has just come back from jail. We even have this conversation between MM and Regina:

Regina: Ms. Blanchard. I see you’re back.

MM: Isn’t it wonderful? Everything worked out.

Which I would see as how Regina would react when the curse finally gets lifted.

I also see how the Evil Queen might react to it. This is another part of their conversation:

Regina: Are you insinuating something?

MM: Yes, I am. But I forgive you. Even if you can’t admit what you did, I forgive you anyway. Your life must be filled with such incredible loneliness if your only joy comes from destroying everyone else’s happiness. It’s so sad, Mayor Mills, because despite what you think, it won’t make you happy. It’s only going to leave a giant hole in your heart.

Which is exactly what the Evil Queen has stated already, about wanting them to feel what she has felt: loneliness. And what Regina has told the Evil Queen: “You still have a hole in your heart, just like I did when I first came here.”

Maybe the Evil Queen will try, just as she did in 1x20 by trying to seduce David, to keep Snow and Charming apart; but ultimately she will have to realize what Henry tells her in “The Stranger” is true:

Henry: Go ahead and try. It won’t work. No matter what you do, Snow White will have her happy ending. She and Prince Charming will be together. The curse will end. Good will win.

And maybe the Evil Queen just needs her family’s “forgiveness”, to know that she is accepted as a whole, and not for just the “good parts”.

Emma and August:

At first August, as he is trying to convince Emma to go on a trip with him, he tells her this:

August: You need to look at the big picture. That’s the only way you’re gonna understand what you’re up against. That’s the only way you’ll know how to beat Regina.

We know that Emma now isn’t trying to beat Regina, but she is still not looking at the big picture. I kind of believe that August will have a part in Emma seeing all the lies H00k has told her so far. August might know some things that have happened that are missing from the book, just as he was about to tell her the rest of his story. He might know what really happened with Ariel for example.

In Season 1 August was supposed to make Emma believe she was the Savior, and needed to bring back everyone’s happy ending. This time, I think he will have to remind her that it is not her job to give H00k is own happy ending.

August: Your denial is more powerful than I thought. It’s preventing you from seeing the truth.

The denial can be both about her feelings for Regina, and her relationship with H00k. And the truth she is not seeing now is the fact that her relationship is built on a bunch of lies.

She literally can not see what’s in front of her.

Emma + Henry and Regina

At the beginning of the episode, we see Emma trying to build a case against Regina to get custody of Henry. And at the end, we see her trying to bring Henry out of town, stating they have to leave Storybrooke.

We know from what Regina tells Emma in the wish realm, that they kind of share custody of Henry now. Maybe they are working on the legal aspects of it?

I also think Emma didn’t leave Storybrooke in Season 1 because, just as in Season 3, there was a “piece” missing in their family: Regina.

Bonus, because I don’t know where to fit these:

1) Regina and David have this conversation just as they are about to enter her house:

Regina: Thank you for being my knight in shining armor.

David: Well, it’s more like flannel, but you’re welcome.

We perfectly know by now who has been Regina’s “knight in flannel armor”, if you need a reminder, here she is:

2) Mary Margaret at the beginning, when August installs a new lock on their door, says:

“As long as it keeps Regina and her skeleton keys out.”

But from Shady’s post here, we can see the key that opened MM’s door wasn’t a skeleton one.

3) Marco, as he wakes up on the shore after having being through a storm with Pinocchio: “Pinocchio? You saved me.”

Which as been said a lot between people who I think share TL - Snow/Charming - Emma/Henry - Emma/Regina. So, that made me think… maybe the TLK effect when getting out of the tree for both August and Emma only happened because the people who put them there (Marco and Charming) did it out of True Love? They were giving them their best chance, as the show likes to tell us.

So, the True Love colors showed as Emma got into the wardrobe and Regina getting out of the tree, are separated, but for now, because they haven’t been “united” yet? Both Emma and Regina are still in denial, and don’t realize the other feels the same.

4) After Pinocchio has turned into a real boy, the first scene we see of him and Marco at the workshop, shows us Jiminy Cricket (the conscience) being trapped into the clock. Which reminded me of how Gideon, of all things, broke the tower clock from the inside out. Is that a way to bring Emma back to her conscious?

Who Will Revere The Black Woman?

Published in the September 1966 issue of Negro Digest                                   By: Abbey Lincoln

Mark Twain said, in effect, that when a country enslaves a people, the first necessary job is to make the world feel that the people to be enslaved are subhuman. The next job is to make his fellow countrymen believe that man is inferior, and, then, the unkindest cut of all is to make that man believe himself inferior.

A good job has been done on the Black people in this country, as far as convincing them of their inferiority is concerned. The general white community has told us in a million different ways and in no uncertain terms that “God” and “nature” made a mistake when it came to the fashioning of us and ours. The whole society, having been thoroughly convinced of the stained, threatening, and evil nature of anything unfortunate enough to be, or to be referred to as, black, as an intended matter of courtesy refers to those of African extraction as “colored” or “Negro.”

The fact that “Negro” is the Spanish word for “black” is hardly understood, it would seem; or it would seem that the word “black” may be intimated or suggested, but never simply stated in good English.

Too many Negroes, if described or referred to as “black,” take it as an affront; and I was once told by a Canadian Irishman that I’d insulted him by referring to my person as a Black woman. He insisted that, in actuality, I was brown, not black; and I felt obliged to tell him he described himself as “white,” and that he wasn’t white either.

The fact that white people readily and proudly call themselves “white,” glorify all that is white, and whitewash all that is glorified, becomes unnatural and bigoted in its intent only when these same whites deny persons of African heritage who are Black the natural and inalienable right to readily and proudly call themselves “black,” glorify all that is black, and blackwash all that is glorified.

Yet, one is forced to conclude that this is not the case at all, that an astonishing proportion of the white population finds it discomforting that Blacks should dare to feel so much glory in being beautifully black. In the face of this kind of “reasoning,” the only conclusion one can logically come to is that there is something wrong with this society and its leadership. “The Man’s” opinion of God is sorry, to put it nicely, and his opinion of himself is simply vague and hazy.

Consider: Swearing his love and devotion to the Omnipotent One on the one hand, yet defying and cursing him with rank impudence on the other; using the crutch of his “inherently” base and callow nature on the one hand, and claiming his godhood on the other; worshipping a Jew as the Son of God on the one hand, yet persecuting all other Jews as enemies of God on the other; historically placing this same Jew on the African continent on the one hand, and describing him as a European in physical appearance on the other (still, one would suppose that it’s tacitly understood by all that “God” couldn’t be anything other than “white,” no matter where He was born); advocating that the Black man is made of inferior stuff on the one hand, yet defying him not to prove his superiority on the other; naming hurricanes for women on the one hand, yet H is for the heart as pure as gold on the other; giving her pet names such as “whore,” “slut,” “bitch,” etc., on the one hand, yet, put them all together and they spell mother, the word “that means the world to me,” on the other.

No wonder the slogan “white is right” could take a whole nation by storm. One could never accuse this society of being rational.

Still, instead of this irrational society warping my delicate little psyche, it only drove me, ultimately, to the conclusion that any Black human being able to survive the horrendous and evil circumstances in which one inevitably finds oneself trapped must be some kind of a giant with great and peculiar abilities, with an armor as resistant as steel yet made of purest gold. My mother is one of the most courageous people I have ever known, with an uncanny will to survive. When she was a young woman, the white folks were much further in the lead than they are now, and their racist rules gave her every disadvantage; yet, she proved herself a queen among women, any women, and as a result will always be one of the great legends for me.

But strange as it is, I’ve heard it echoed by too many Black full-grown males that Black womanhood is the downfall of the Black man in that she (the Black woman) is “evil,” “hard to get along with,” “domineering” “suspicious,” and “narrow-minded.” In short, a black, ugly, evil you-know what.

As time progresses I’ve learned that this description of my mothers, sisters, and partners in crime is used as the basis for the further shoving, by the Black man of his own head into the sand of oblivion. Hence, the Black mother, housewife, and all-round girl Thursday is called upon to suffer both physically and emotionally every, humiliation a woman can suffer and still function.

Her head is more regularly beaten than any other woman’s, and by her own man; she’s the scapegoat for Mr. Charlie; she is forced to stark realism and chided if caught dreaming; her aspirations for her and hers are, for sanity’s sake, stunted; her physical image has been criminally maligned, assaulted, and negated; she’s the first to be called ugly and never yet beautiful, and as a consequence is forced to see her man (an exact copy of her, emotionally and physically), brainwashed and wallowing in self-loathing, pick for his own the physical antithesis of her (the white woman and incubator of his heretofore arch enemy the white man). Then, to add guilt to insult and injury, she (the Black woman) stands accused as the emasculator of the only thing she has ever cared for, her Black man. She is the scapegoat for what white America has made of the “Negro personality.”

Raped and denied the right to cry out in her pain, she has been named the culprit and called “loose,” “hot-blooded,” “wanton,” “sultry,” and “amoral.” She has been used as the white man’s sexual outhouse, and shamefully encouraged by her own ego-less man to persist in this function. Wanting, too, to be carried away by her “Prince Charming,” she must, in all honesty, admit that he has been robbed of his crown by the very assaulter and assassin who has raped her. Still, she looks upon her man as God’s gift to Black womanhood and is further diminished and humiliated and outraged when the feeling is not mutual.

When a white man “likes colored girls,” his woman (the white woman) is the last one he wants to know about it. Yet, seemingly, when a Negro “likes white girls,” his woman (the Black woman) is the first he wants to know about it. White female rejects and social misfits are flagrantly flaunted in our faces as the ultimate in feminine pulchritude. Our women are encouraged by our own men to strive to look and act as much like the white female image as possible, and only those who approach that “goal” in physical appearance and social behavior are acceptable. At best, we are made to feel that we are poor imitations and excuses for white women.

Evil? Evil, you say? The Black woman is hurt, confused, frustrated, angry, resentful, frightened and evil! Who in this hell dares suggest that she should be otherwise? These attitudes only point up her perception of the situation and her healthy rejection of same.

Maybe if our women get evil enough and angry enough, they’ll be moved to some action that will bring our men to their senses. There is one unalterable fact that too many of our men cannot seem to face. And that is, we “black, evil, ugly” women are a perfect and accurate reflection of you “black, evil, ugly” men. Play hide and seek as long as you can and will, but your every rejection and abandonment of us is only a sorry testament of how thoroughly and carefully you have been blinded and brainwashed. And let it further be understood that when we refer to you we mean, ultimately, us. For you are us, and vice versa.

We are the women who were kidnapped and brought to this continent as slaves. We are the women who were raped, are still being raped, and our bastard children snatched from our breasts and scattered to the winds to be lynched, castrated, de-egoed, robbed, burned, and deceived.
We are the women whose strong and beautiful Black bodies were—and are—still being used as a cheap labor force for Miss Anne’s kitchen and Mr. Charlie’s bed, whose rich, black, and warm milk nurtured—and still nurtures—the heir to the racist and evil slavemaster.

We are the women who dwell in the hell-hole ghettos all over the land. We are the women whose bodies are sacrificed, as living cadavers, to experimental surgery in the white man’s hospitals for the sake of white medicine. We are the women who are invisible on the television and movie screens, on the Broadway stage. We are the women who are lusted after, sneered at, leered at, hissed at, yelled at, grabbed at, tracked down by white degenerates in our own pitiable, poverty-stricken, and prideless neighborhoods.

We are the women whose hair is compulsively fried, whose skin is bleached, whose nose is “too big,” whose mouth is “toobig and loud,” whose behind is “too big and broad,” whose feet are “too big and flat,” whose face is “too black and shiny,” and whose suffering and patience is too long and enduring to be believed.

Who’re just too damned much for everybody.

We are the women whose bars and recreation halls are invaded by flagrantly disrespectful, bigoted, simpering, amoral, emotionally unstable, outcast, maladjusted, nymphomaniacal, condescending white women … in desperate and untiring search of the “frothing-at-the-mouth-for-a white-woman, strong backed, sixty-minute hot black.” Our men.

We are the women who, upon protesting this invasion of our privacy and sanctity and sanity, are called “jealous,” and “evil,” and “small-minded,” and “prejudiced.” We are the women whose husbands and fathers and brothers and sons have been plagiarized, imitated, denied, and robbed of the fruits of their genius, and who consequently we see emasculated, jailed, lynched, driven mad, deprived, enraged, and made suicidal. We are the women whom nobody, seemingly, cares about, who are made to feel inadequate, stupid and backward, and who inevitably have the most colossal inferiority complexes to be found.

And who is spreading the propaganda that “the only free people in this country are the white man and the Black woman?” If this be freedom, then Heaven is Hell.

Who will revere the Black woman? Who will keep our neighborhoods safe for Black innocent womanhood? Black womanhood is outraged and humiliated. Black womanhood cries for dignity and restitution and salvation. Black womanhood wants and needs protection, and keeping, and holding. Who will assuage her indignation? Who will keep her precious and pure? Who will glorify and proclaim her beautiful image? To whom will she cry rape?

Honesty hour: pure uncensored thoughts/feelings about Dazai, Chuuya, Lovecraft, and Akutagawa :)

Osamu Dazai - The Liar

The Fool… Hanging upside down on the tarot table with a joker’s grin. Little to no regard for anything other than his own desires. A study in profane motive hidden in “virtuous” action. Giving the illusion that he is less than he is; that he can be affected. Oh how he is cunning. Its absolute genius how he gazes upon the world and projects to his enemies that he can be hurt, the he can be destroyed in ways that either he can’t or has already done to himself. You see him, but you do not see him… his true nature hidden so well by innocent clandestine façade. Butter wouldn’t melt on that silver tongue.

Still, he enthralled me with this…

Not once when he was under my hands… Not once when he was bound so tightly it lacerated his skin…. Not once when he looked up at me did I ever believe he was helpless. No…

That is real power. That is power even I could not purchase…

I would’ve fallen in love with this one had he not been after my throat… missed opportunities.

Chuuya Nakahara - the Queen

The most important piece on the Mafia chessboard and Mori knows it. Unlimited mobility and the ability to destroy everything in his way. Such honor and respect for who he is and what he does despite its nature. So exquisitely deadly and breathtaking – when you reach the event horizon you barely can look back, much less escape before it devours you. It’s a type of danger I have no qualms about getting close to… in fact is an underlying desire.

However, the Queen needs a King to protect, lest it be no more than a pawn. Chuuya needs his King in order to be all that he is and destroy all that opposes him. That is why Soukoku exists isn’t it… he must protect his King… I wonder how much of that is understood between them…

Chuuya… I am strangely protective of our animosity; our spats have created a complex tit-for-tat that I would never let anyone come between. I suppose that is why the word Frenemy is so viable here. I am the only one allowed to abuse you. I wonder how you feel now that you understand why I call you Queen…

Though to be honest, I would lay you out like silk sheets and give you a real reason to hate me.

H.P. Lovecraft – the Outlier

Beloved Howard…

I hold your contract in a vice grip to my chest to hold you in this world. My motives unwittingly being to insure that I am forever apart of your life. Odd, eccentric… and strangely kind in your dissonance with humanity. I would often believe that had I not called you from the abyss you would’ve found an excuse to end our pathetic existence just from one ill-timed noise complaint.

Dear Howard is my friend even though he admonishes my verbal admittance of it. His happiness is my business as most of the members of my guild are. However, his happiness is one I would kill others with my own hands to protect. Howard is loved by I and my cousin. Even if the understanding of love came from an outside party for him, it changes my affections not.

I’ve even grown singularly fond of his relationship with his husband and with the man himself. His idiot-megane has irrevocably ingratiated himself to my “softer” feelings and seeing them together is satisfying.

They both seem to have a problem with my sexual attractions to them… I say they simply protest too much in the face of it being an option.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa – the Damned

Abrupt…

Piercing…

Unforgettable…

A singular strike that took me down in the most unexpected ways.

Raised up from the ninth circle of hell he appeared to wreck and destroy everything I had built with the lackadaisical interest and that burning hate displayed in far too intelligent, pellucid gaze threw me from more than just that blimp. He burned brightly like a vengeful specter. Cold, calculating and almost incandescent in his ire and yet… I have him.

He is wanted. That is clear. Wanted for his power. Wanted for his ability. Wanted for his ruthlessness and determinations… oh yes, he as just as evil as his mentor. Yet I have him.

His place in my arms solidified by the near innocent reaction and wonderings that lead to him being handled gentle, carefully, affectionately. In praise of his uniqueness, in his absolute complexity and difference from me, I fell into those small worlds of pain that others thought Ryunosuke didn’t understand. That he blindly was just affected without comprehending their cause. Underestimating his capacity as onlookers often did.

I chose to teach him exactly what it was like to have those things. Because these were things even he was ignorant of despite having chased it his entire life. Denoted vulnerability in the darkness of sheets and moonlit windows as I show him just how gentle it can be, how kind of a hand exists for him, how he deserves to be valued.

The rod was not spared on him… even when it should’ve been.

It matters not. Because I have him.

I can admit it out loud. I love him dearly and he will never say it back. Never verbally. Never out loud for others to understand. And I don’t need him to. Even when my affections whispered against ear fly over his adorable head, I am assured that he is mine.

I knew the moment morning light woke me from one of our trysts and found that his body still lay pressed into mine… I knew he’d never leave, even when he returned to his little Mafia. He stayed. He won’t say it. He doesn’t quite know how. That’s fine. I like it that way.

Highlights from the Rebecca Mader panel at Storytelling Con, Barcelona, April 22, 2017

  • Asked about visiting Prague:  “My favorite thing to do in Prague is just to walk around the old part, walk over the bridges, drink the wine and eat the food.  I ate and drank so much in Prague it was fantastic.  A really beautiful city.”
  • Asked about Elizabeth Mitchell:  She missed working with her on Once Upon a Time but loved working with her on Lost.
  • About Zelena’s relationship with Hades:  “That died a death didn’t it?  Zelena and Hades no more.  […]  Being with Hades was the first time Zelena has ever been in a romantic relationship with a man or a woman.  It definitely changed her.  It broke down some walls around her heart.  […]  He was awful.  She can do way better than him.  He’s an amazing actor.  I think she deserves to be with someone who doesn’t want to murder her sister.  You know what i mean?  […]  I need some new blood.  Someone new.”
  • If Regina and Zelena weren’t sisters would she ship them:  “Yeah.  It doesn’t matter because in real life we’re just Bex and Lana.”  What story would you like for them?  “To be lesbian lovers you mean?  I’d watch it!  It would have to be on cable or netflix.  And for them not to be related.  Just girlfriends, not sisters, two strong women?  I ship it.”
  • Why she became an actor and move to the US:  “I always wanted to be an actress but I couldn’t afford to go to college.  So I just decided fuck I’m going to move to America and see what happens.  So I moved to America with $200 and said I’m going to be an actress!  And everyone said okay… and I showed them.  Haters gonna hate….”
  • What would you like to be if you weren’t an actress:  “I don’t have a plan B.  I always wanted to be an actress so I did it.  I don’t have an plan B.  If it all goes wrong I’ll just have to do it at home.”
  • Asking about Glinda:  “Yeah I love it when there are lots of Wizard of Oz characters.  Tomorrow night, because you’ll all be watching illegally on your laptops, is a big episode for my character where you’ll get to meet the Tin Man and maybe the Cowardly Lion.  I think it would be great if Glinda came back at some point.  She’s beautiful.”
  • Bex cannot remember the Lost numbers.
  • Bex wants Star Wars characters added to Once Upon a Time.
  • How does she view Regina blaming Zelena for the death of Robin:  “It was not my fault!  I didn’t do it!  I didn’t kill him!  I killed Hades for her!  I’m FINE!  I literally killed my boyfriend to save my sister.  You’re welcome.  Regina lives because of me.”
  • FMK:  Emma, Rumple, Regina.  F: Emma, M: Regina, K: Rumple.  Because Regina would cook for her and be a good wifie.  “That’s a whole new tv show!  I’d watch it.”
  • If Zelena had a pet what would it be:  “A flying monkey.  And a broomstick.  And if you ever don’t see my baby in a scene, they’re like ‘the flying monkeys are taking care of it.  They’re good nannies.”
  • A love interest from Lost for Zelena:  Sawyer.
  • Funny stuff between the cast:  She directs people to Snapchat and she suggests Lana is always trying to feed her and make her fat.
  • Favorite character on Grey’s anatomy:  “The hot guy who is always moody and works in peds.  And then like the hot blond lesbian.  I love her.  If I had a sick baby I’d take her to her stat.”
  • Promises that we’ll see some “sister stuff” in the coming episodes.
  • Question about Zelena finding true love, someone suggests Emma, “Sorry Hook.  Maybe she should break up their relationship.”  More suggestions about Zelena and Belle.  “At the end of this season I don’t know that she’ll find true love.  She’s still getting over that Hades thing.”  But says she doesn’t need a man.
  • Favorite ship on the show:  “Zelena and her broomstick.”
  • Favorite bloopers:  “When i forget a line I say such awful things.  There is a reason I’m not on the blooper reel much because when I forget a line I immediately swear.  Once my sister came to visit me in Vancouver in September and we were in Mr. Gold’s shop and Regina, she was the Evil Queen, and there was Rumple, and my sister was by what we call video village where the monitors are and I walked up to the Evil Queen and ‘FUCK!  I forgot what my fucking line was!’ and I heard my sister in the back scream and that made it so much worse.  I don’t even remember what the question was.”
  • Favorite life advise:  “Be yourself.  Piss off hater.  Do you.  Just do you boo.  And whatever you are doing in life just don’t give up.  And when things are really awful and you just want it to be over and you don’t want to do it anymore it never feels the same the next day.  Hashtag ThisToShallPass.”
  • What it was like working with Barbara Hershey:  “Awh mama.  Barbara Hershey was wicked.  She’s really kind.  She had really good candy.  I had a bit of a love affair with Barbara Hershey.  We fell in love and she would like hold my hand.  We had these beautiful scenes with Barbara, Lana and me, and before we shoot while the cameras were rolling we would just hold hands and look into each other’s eyes and just say ‘I love you’.  The three of us together was magical.”
  • Would she like to have a romance with King Arthur:  “A bit weird because Liam is a very good friend and I know his fiance so I’m going to say no.”
  • She’s only ever been to an airport in Sweden.  But she’d like to go there and see more then the airport.
  • What does she think about the Black Fairy:  “I love her.  I’ve known the actress who plays her Jaime Murray, for seven years.  Jaime Murray is an amazing actress.  But it’s nice.  We’re the same age.  We’re both English.”  About the final battle:  “Buckle up for safety, it’s about to get real.”
  • Memorizing dialogue:  She learns each line and then the second, and then goes back to the first and does both, and then goes onto the third, and repeats until she learns all of it.  She credits doing soup opera acting.

roses are red, roses are white

This is a Wars of the Roses Hunger Games AU.

I’ve had to take certain liberties with the actual history of the Wars of the Roses (especially the dates) as well as with some of the HG characters (namely their ages), for this to work. Still, I hope you enjoy it, because as a giant history nerd, this is something I’ve been dying to write!

roses are red, roses are white
prologue
a king of death and blood and bones

Madge of Bedford is born to an England on the cusp of war, soon to run red with its own rebellious blood.

The year is 1453 and her mother falls terribly ill, nearly dies in childbed. Midwives rush about in a panic as the Duchess of Bedford turns ghostly pale, blood pooling on the floor and outside, Madge’s father the Duke paces along the stone floors of the hall, worry gnawing at his nerves.

The healthy, screaming child is hurried away from her dying mother and the nurse that attends to her cannot hide her disappointment that the wilting Duchess couldn’t have given her husband a son and heir. What use will a small daughter have to so great a lord?

(greater than you could imagine)

The Duchess of Bedford does not die, manages to cling feebly to life but the midwives and physicians are clear, she will have no more children.

The newly christened Madge of Bedford will be her parents’ only legacy.

(and what a legacy it will be)

The Prince and the Sea Witch

I’m back with the first chapter of the Mermaid au! You guys really liked the prologue, and I am having so much fun with this! Thank you all so much! Also, the poem at the start is a translation of an amazing Urdu ghaza by Amjad Islam Amjad. One of my favorites. Enjoy!

Pairing: Prinxiety, background Logicality

Summary: Prince Roman of the Mermaid City and the evil Sea Witch Anxiety must work together to put their differences aside to save the ocean from the biggest threat yet. They might succeed, if they could go five minutes without murdering each other.

You can also read it here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/10829247?view_full_work=true

Chapter 1

No matter what season it is on the outside,
My heart always celebrates the season of missing you,
You can test me, my love, if you do not believe,
And see how your smile transforms the season of my melancholy heart.
—————————————————–
The Mermaid City, Jaesmore, was a sight to behold. Named after the very first Mermaid Queen, it was situated deep in the heart of the ocean, and spanned several thousand feet in every direction, as far as the eye could see. Surrounded on all sides by an impenetrable protective Shield, the city was both a safe haven and the worst prison to all that resided within.

Bite (Chapter 18) [M]

Jungkook x Reader
Vampire/Witch Smut AU

 MASTERLIST to all chapters

I sat in dim light, illuminated in the orange toned glow of candlelight from the various candelabras currently in use. Wendy rested a few feet next to me, eyes closed and face blank, back straight, fingers poised in a circle atop her knees and crossed legs. I tried to copy her stance but my back ached in protest, a testament to the years of bad posture I possessed.

“How do you do this every day? I already feel like I’m jumping out of my skin.” I asked, annoyed and itchy.

“It takes practice and patience. Everyone feels that way at first, but eventually you will understand the point of meditation. Now focus and don’t speak. Don’t think. Just clear your mind.” She chastised.

That request seemed almost impossible at the moment; I couldn’t stop thinking even if I tried. Thoughts of Jungkook were constantly plaguing me, I saw him in everything. Somehow my feelings for him had grown much deeper than I could imagine, filling my body until I felt bloated and overfilled with love, devotion, and blissfully stupid affection. Just the passing mention of him made a grin split on my face, garish and wide, prompting a roll of the eyes of whoever had uttered those two syllables. Jungkook. One of those smiles currently spread onto my lips, a breeze fluttering the candle flames in the closed room as my chest filled with swelling breaths.

okay but skins will just never get better than the first generation. just

• the tony/sid relationship? Like holy shit so interesting sid goes from idolizing tony to literally saying “I can’t think of anything worse than being you” and then he STILL helps tony and is there for him when he really needs him

• TONY STONEM in general. evil manipulator mwhaha just wants to party but also loves his sister more than himself and is a lost puppy without Michelle. Super fashionable and bi as hell. Sass master. i give the writers major props for making him so unlikeable but also very layered and giving him a crazy ass redemption arc. He’s the center of the universe and he knows it.

• TONY AND MICHELLE’S MATCHING OUTFITS H O L Y S H I T

• can we just appreciate the fact that the first word Effy ever speaks to anyone while lucid is “wanker”

• Michelle could so easily fall into the “weak gullible girlfriend” character but she’s not??? She stands up for herself and is crazy about her friends and she literally ONLY SPOKE SPANISH for DAYS in order to study for her exam you go girl

• a sweet, close, beautiful, pure friendship between a straight guy and a gay guy with no jokes or undertones about anyone’s sexuality

• ANWAR IS MUSLIM. HE IS SHOWN PRAYING AND STRUGGLES WITH HIS OWN BELIEFS VS HIS RELIGION’S

• they could have easily made sid the weird nerdy best friend who’s the punchline to all the jokes but they made him the most interesting character on the whole damn show. His relationship with Cassie. His relationship with Tony. His relationship with his dad. His relationship with Michelle. Hell even his relationship with Effy. A+

• ACTUAL QUEEN JAL FAZER. her entire audition scene is honestly worthy of a standing ovation oh my GOD

• ACTUAL ANGEL CASSIE AINSWORTH. She’s flawed and broken and selfless and jealous and dotty and dreamy and vulnerable and strong all at once. Her eating disorder/mental illness is never used as a trope or a plot device, it’s realistic and an important part of her character but it NEVER defines her. The scene where she runs through the city? Gives me chills every. Fucking. Time. Protect her at all costs.

• ACTUAL CINNAMON ROLL CHRIS MILES. he drew a picture of a snail when asked what his future goals were. he gave the school musical a standing ovation after sketch fucked it all up. half of his lines make no damn sense and he’s the typical stock “comic relief character” but NO they gave him so much depth and family background and levity and he MEANT something. and I think we all expected him to go out in a blaze of glory, in fitting Chris fashion, but he didn’t, he went painfully and un-spectacularly in a bed. Because living fast and dying young isn’t romantic, it’s sad and real and it hurts everyone they leave behind. Also shoutout to Joe dempsie for going full frontal 10/10 you are a gift to humanity

• sneaky, mysterious, bad girl Effy taking care of Pandora and letting her take the credit for her art project

• the protective sisterly bond between Michelle and Effy

• THE DISCO SCENE

• the romances are all so well written and they HURT, because this is a tv show and we expect relationships to last but these are teenagers and high school love affairs never really last, and even though they feel so dramatic and intense now you know that Michelle and Tony will never grow up and get married and have babies, it just won’t happen, but you still feel it all the same, just like you would if you were a teenager.

• but HONESTLY. Jal and Chris. Literally the last people you’d ever think to end up together but they worked because they challenged each other, they made each other want to be better. Chris helped Jal stop being so cautious and uptight and Jal showed Chris that he did matter as a person, that he needed to try, that he couldn’t waste his life because it counted for something. When she puts the coin in his hand to give him all her luck and he’s being wheeled away and he holds it up to show her I just SOB it is so beautiful and sad. They took care of each other but they didn’t change for each other, Jal still went to her audition (and SLAYED it) and Chris still was just as carefree as he always had been, they just met each other halfway and it was so glorious

• and don’t even get me started on Sid and Cassie. These two fuckers. I knew it was endgame the moment you hear them bouncing on springs and Cassie’s like “oh OH YES” and you think they’re fucking but NOPE they’re jumping on a trampoline and she’s playing with the drawstrings on his hoodie like fuck they are so cute. “It’s not like anybody cares, so…” “I care.” When she shoots him with a squirt gun after he stands her up and totally calls him on his bullshit, “everything is your choice Sid” I think about that scene a lot. HIS LETTER TO HER. HE FEELS LIKE SINGING WHEN HE SEES HER. LORD HELP ME. and you think he’s missed her and she’s gone to Scotland and he’ll never see her again but AH plot twist Tony gave her the letter and they meet on the same bench she tried to kill herself on like can you say DAMN and then the scene in season two where he finally confronts her and they’re SO MEAN to each other saying how much they hate each other “whatever I’m sick of saying sorry, I love you, you say sorry” and Cassie’s way of telling him she loves him back is by telling him she named her pet slug Sidley i can’t i just can’t and then Sid, nerdy dumb Sid, becomes the fucking romantic hero and chases her to fucking New York City what the fuck I love them IT HURTS

• Sid and Tony holding each other in the middle of the nightclub after sid’s dad dies and you can’t hear anything but the music but you just see Sid bawling and Tony clutching him… Honestly one of the most powerful moments I have ever seen on tv. Honestly give mike bailey an AWARD

• that “wild world” sing-along will go down in history I swear

• CASSIE’S CLOTHES OMG

• we need more female friendships on TV like the one Michelle and Jal share

• the villain for the first few episodes is named “Mad Twatter.” Just let that sink in

• Chris’s funeral scene is honestly so beautiful and special and well done. I cried so hard. It’s teens honoring and mourning their friend in a way that feels right, that means something to them. It’s catharsis for the characters and the viewers. Amazing

• honestly just one of the best programs aimed at teens I’ve ever seen. Deals with death, religion, parent issues, school stress, pregnancy, mental illness, drug use/abuse, sex, love, varying sexualities (TONY IS BI AND YOU CANT TELL ME OTHERWISE), friendship, suicide, classism, employment/careers, college, and a million other topics without ever feeling contrived or preachy. Yeah some of the hi jinks the characters get into is ridiculous and would never happen in real life (that Russia episode wtf) but at the end of the day, you relate. Teens relate. They feel these characters because they see them in the world around them, because they ARE them. We are all Chris, and Jal, and Sid, and Cassie, and Tony, and Michelle, and Maxxie, and Anwar, and Effy.

• (that ending shot with Effy looking right into the camera is legendary)

• literally when people say that gen 2 is the best generation or the iconic generation I just… did we even watch the same show

• skins was never able to beat the first generation. It just couldn’t. How do you beat this. how

She speaks his name as though they’ve known each other a lifetime. For the first time, Robin Hood finds his aim faltering. He watches her approach, her eyes never leaving his, and feels as though he should know her - the woman in her dark clothes and gloves - as if they were once connected. Shaking his head free of inane thoughts, he straightens, pulling his bowstring taut once more. He never misses a shot. His aim is always true; his arrow always finds its target. Why should it be any different now?

She speaks again, his name a sweet utterance from her lips, a slight lift to its ending as if questioning if it really is him. Behind her, the lady with the blond hair and royal coat yells out a frantic cry as the portal on the ground diminishes. All the better, he thinks as he returns his gaze to the dark-haired one. They’d have nowhere to run; one more successful robbery to add to his reputation.

The one who’d addressed him takes another step forward, and he orders her to stop moving, or he’ll put an arrow through her heart. She flinches as if he’s struck her. She stops, not more than five feet away. Tears pool in soft brown eyes, and once more, he gets the oddest sense of familiarity.

What was it her companion called her?

Regina.

When her lips tremble, guilt pricks his conscience, an unusual turn of events. Fear is an effective tool for what he does. Seldom does it affect him, yet the thought that this lady he barely knows – Regina – is afraid of him is a thought that troubles him.

He lowers his bow just the slightest. “Off with the jewellery,” he says as if they hadn’t heard the first time.

The portal is closed now. As the blond woman moves to join them, up goes the bow.

“Don’t come any closer,” he warns. “Or I swear, the next arrow will find a place that hurts.”

The royal fixes him with a distressed frown. “Robin, I know you don’t remember us, but please, try. We need your help.”

“And what makes you think I would help you, a mere stranger?”

“Because no matter what world this is, I refuse to believe you would shoot your soulmate, especially not after you’ve given up your life for her.“

He scowls. "What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Regina, the woman standing right here, staring at you like you’ve just risen from the dead. You sacrificed your life for her, Robin. Surely you remember that.”

“And surely you think me a fool to believe you,” he says sardonically, and the blonde’s face falls.

As for her companion, she hasn’t moved from her position since he’s demanded her to stop. Her eyes are fixed on the ground somewhere at his feet, a wet streak on her face betraying a tear. His heart does a strange sort of pitter-patter when he turns his gaze towards her, and a part of him wishes she would look at him again.

She doesn’t.

In that moment, he makes up his mind. He’s not foolish enough to believe stories of magical love and happy endings; life has dealt him too much to believe such silly tales, but these strangers intrigue him. They seem to truly believe the absurdness of what they’re saying. Perhaps he would take them with him – for a small price.

“Your jewellery,” he says. “And I will offer you the help you need.”

“Deal,” the blond woman replies.

He lowers his bow, watching as she complies with his request, but it isn’t long before his gaze wanders back to the dark-haired one, the sudden rapid thumping of his heart revealing the truth: his offer of assistance had nothing to do with jewellery and everything to do with the one called Regina.

She is quiet, speaking only in one-word answers whenever her friend, Emma, poses her a question, even less when he tries to make conversation with her, replying only with nods and shakes of her head. If his questions require a more verbal reply, he is met with silence, leaving Emma to fill in the blanks for her.

“She’s in shock,” the blonde tells him back at his camp when Regina excused herself to go to bed, consisting of worn-out blankets in a tent. “That, and probably a little bit of heartbreak. You aren’t exactly who we remember back in Storybrooke.”

When he asked how he’d been like, she piles him with details of his alleged other life. Of a son named Roland, of robbing the rich to give to the poor – he’d scoffed at that one, because he robs but certainly not out of a compassionate heart for the less privileged – and of his love with the Evil Queen.

“She hardly seems evil,” he remarks, poking at the glowing embers of a dying fire. “Truth be told, she seems anything but.”

“Well, we did sort of leave the dark side of Regina in the other world,” Emma says, sighing. “It’s a long, complicated story.”

The more he listens, the more it sounds like a tall tale, yet what do these women benefit from spinning such lies? Certainly not to deceive their way out of a robbery for their jewellery is already in his possession. He spends the entire night awake, partly because he is unused to strangers in his camp, more because of the unsettling emotions thrumming within him, feelings that he thought he’d never experience again after Marian’s death, yet now it seems they’ve risen to life with twice the intensity.

When morning arrives, Regina is the first of the two to wake. She emerges from the tent, looking almost embarrassed when she spots him. She tucks her hair behind one ear, avoiding his gaze, and joins him by the campfire that had burned itself out during the night, leaving behind white ash, charred wood, and the faint smell of smoke in the air.

“Did you sleep well, milady?” he asks after having scoured his mind for an appropriate topic. Not the most innovative question, but he figures it’s a safe starter for a conversation, one that fails because all she does is give him a stiff nod.

He watches her as silence descends upon them. She is beautiful, he sees, almost unreasonably so with a strong jawline, full lips, and dark doe-like eyes he knows he can lose himself in if he gives himself a chance, if she gives him a chance. He’s seen her smile, too, when Emma talked about a boy named Henry last night – only once and with reservation – but it’d been enough to make his heart quicken its pace.

What had it been like in this other world, make-believe or not, to see her smile, freely?

“Emma says my tattoo convinced you we’re soulmates.”

Her gaze flickers to him. He reads a hint of apprehension on her face as though she suspects he might be making fun of her. He had found the idea ludicrous the first time he heard it, but he has no intention of hurting her, so he returns her gaze steadily.

“It wasn’t just the tattoo,” she finally says, looking away. “It was how I felt every time I was with…with—” she stops, unable to finish.

“With me,” he says.

She fixes her eyes on him, observing him with caution. “Then you believe?” Her voice is soft, almost as if she’s afraid to hope.

Does he?

His mind says no, but his heart, it craves for the world she speaks of.

For her.

“I don’t know,” he admits, watching disappointment fall across her face like a shadow. “But I do know how I feel when I see you, when I’m with you.” He searches her eyes, and he is a drowning man lost in their depths. “I want to believe, Regina.”

And she smiles.

SWANQUEEN FIC LIST

i promised i’d make a list of my favourite fics and i’m not one to go back on my promises, so here we are! this is going to be divided into categories, and since i’ve gotten some input from other people on twitter, i’ll mark my personal favourites with a “!”. if there’s enough interest i’ll add cs and oq fics, but right now we’re sticking with swanqueen. okay, let’s get started.

AU

most fic is somewhat AU but this list is the super AU where-the-hell-did-that-come-from type if you know what i’m sayin

! Flight SQAO16

“Emma Swan has recently taken a job with Crown Airlines working in the first class cabin flying from New York to London. Regina Mills is a literal high-flying business executive with terrible social skills. Alternative Universe, no curse, no magic, no Storybrooke. Slowburn SwanQueen.”

! Letters from War

“Emma is a soldier on reserve in Fort Benning. Regina is the Mayor of Storybrooke. Through a pen pal program designed to ease the ache of homesick soldiers, Emma and Regina begin sending letters to one another as their relationship grows from cordial acquaintance to something neither woman would have expected - until the letters stop coming.”

! Popcorn Love

“Regina is a successful businesswoman and wonderful parent, but her love life is lacking. She agrees to a string of blind dates set up by her friend Kathryn on the condition that the blonde find her a babysitter. Enter Emma Swan. After each date, Regina returns home only to complain to Emma about her suitors. As they bond, Regina realizes that Emma has all the qualities she desires.”

! The Princess and the Prisoner

“Young Princess Emma grew up on tales of the Evil Queen. When she, as a child, discovers Regina is captive in her Castle’s dungeon, she begins visiting her in secret. Regina indulges Emma’s curiosity and grows to love the child immensely, a love which grows and evolves as Emma ages, eventually developing into a romance, which could finally grant her freedom from her magical prison.” and the elusive FTL AU makes it’s first appearance on my list. i think i might have cried over this.

A Million Tiny Little Things

“emma swan doesn’t seem like the kind of person you’d leave in charge of your kids, but somehow she’s landed the job of nannying the mayor’s son. no matter her rebellious streak, she’s more than a little concerned that she’s breaking the cardinal rule of nannydom: do not, do not, start sleeping with your employer.” was there a nanny trope? there is now. tropes abound, cute as hell. bonus points for emma calling mayor mills “dude”

Of Love and Loathing

“‘I have been sleeping with someone,’ Regina began tentatively, an acute awareness that once she said the words out loud that the madness behind her highly unorthodox situation became all the more real, ‘whom I absolutely loathe.’” i didn’t know whether to put this in AU or canon divergence so here it is

! The Art of Being Extraordinary

“Henry, age 23, decides to give the crowd what they want, what they really want. A story. So he tells them the only one he knows: the greatest love story of all time, and it just so happens, that this love story is his mothers’. Henry’s on and off POV.” this. fucking. story. reading this felt like getting injected with pure, unadulterated happiness and immediately being tied to the back of a jeep and dragged though hell. you might need tissues.

! Aut Vincere Aut Mori

“AU fic set in ancient Rome. Regina, a Vestal priestess, crosses paths with a mysterious gladiator. Suddenly, her life is not quite the same. Historical!Swan Queen.” are you someone who can’t stand historically inaccurate historical!swan queen? this is the fic for you. bang, bitch. this is the shit.

Beyond the Walls (I Saw a Prince)

“Post-midseason finale, one year later. An amnesiac Henry returns to his grandparents’ castle in the Enchanted Forest, where he quickly grows fascinated with the mysterious sorceress who’s training his mother in magic– and who’s the one person in the castle he’s forbidden to ever meet.” what’s that? another FTL AU? hell fucking yeah.

Too Soon

“Regina Mills is perfectly happy being Mayor of a town filled with the constant suffering of people she hates. She does not need some pregnant delinquent messing everything up. Emma Swan comes to Storybrooke at 18 not 28.” i don’t care what anyone says, there will never be enough fic about teen emma. especially teen emma pissing off regina mills.

Mirrors

“Regina runs a mirror shop in Boston. Emma comes by one day. A love story about the two women we adore so much. SwanQueen AU. Rated M for language, reference to rape/violence and smut in later chapters.” in which emma makes ridiculous excuses to buy excessive amounts of mirrors. is the mirror-sales-lady trope a thing?

The Heart’s Lonely Shelter

“East Side Teen’s Homeless Shelter. Emma’s new home. Regina’s new punishment from her dad who owns the shelter. Both under the same roof against their wills. The tension only grows from the moment they meet. SwanQueen AU. M for smut in later chapters, language and subject matter.” teen swanqueen, yo

! Regina (Or the Evil Step-Mother)

“Regina, Marchioness of White, widely renowned as the most elegant woman in England, is in London helping her step-daughter through her first Season. Miss Emma Swan is pretending to be an heiress to seduce and destroy Sir Killian Jones, dandy, on behest of the wealthy Mr Gold.Featuring at least one elopement, a duel, a pistol, several balls and a great deal of romance.”

the regency romance AU you never knew you needed

The Bodyguard

“Based on the 1992 Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner movie The Bodyguard.”

Wedding Crasher

“‘you hire me to be the worst date possible to your sister’s wedding to aggravate your mother and keep her from meddling in your love life’ AU”

because cora hates blondes and regina’s goddamn plucky

! Falling In My Lemonade

“Summer camp instructors Regina and Emma have to share a cabin and a bed.” and here it is; the ever requested camp councillor fic in which regina goes into anaphylactic shock and emma tries to epi pen her with a vibrator

Student/Teacher AU

if you know me, you know that i think these deserve their own category and a shrine

Teasing is Our Game

“With 19 years, Emma is in senior year. What is her surprise when she sees her new stunning math teacher. AU, really. I’m not good at summaries, just read and I hope you like it!” the grammar is a little funny, but it’s a pretty good story

! Teacher’s Pet

“Emma Swan is starting her senior year. Her friends tell her about the Creative Writing teacher that she has on her schedule and how no one had passed her class with an A, not even her bookworm friend, Belle. What will she do? And who exactly is this ‘bitchy Evil Queen’ as they claim her to be? SwanQueen. Student/Teacher. M for language and future chapters.” and here you have it; the holy fucking grail of student/teacher AU

Is That So, Miss Swan?

“College student, Emma Swan, is confronted by her favorite professor and secret heart-throb, Dr. Regina Mills. What happens when Emma is forced to reveal her secrets? We shall see.”

Whiteout

“A student/teacher SQ AU. Regina is Emma’s college professor and Emma’s got a wicked crush.”

Baby Write This Down

“Floating around foster homes didn’t give her much time to get settled in at a school so she just didn’t bother. What was the point in worrying about grades when she knew she was going to have to start over in a completely different school within a year or so?That attitude had carried over into college for the most part. She did enough to scrape by because she actually had to earn her financial aid but that’s where her achievements ended. Until she got put into Miss Mill’s class.”

From Crayons to Perfume

“Emma Swan ran from Storybrooke at 18 and never planned to return. She doesn’t want to see Regina Mills, her terrifying high school English teacher, or the kid she abandoned. But life has a way of catching up on us.”

Making Exceptions

“Emma Swan is a culinary arts student. Regina Mills is her English teacher.”

Canon Divergence

basically, if it starts off sort of like the show, you’ll find it here

! Double Trouble

“Teenage versions of Emma and Regina appear in Storybrooke and to everyone’s surprise the girls hit it off immediately.” y’all might not think this one sounds all that interesting, but it might be my favourite of the whole list. nothing beats double trouble. trust me.

! A New Hope

“Something goes terribly wrong when the Jolly Roger falls into the portal. There’s an explosion and, next thing Emma knows, is that she’s on a desert island, trapped… with Regina Mills. The two women will have to learn how to work together in order to find a way out, although it may prove to not be so easy.” really beautiful and heartbreaking in some parts. mentions abuse if i remember correctly, so TW for that. one of my favourites.

Feel

“A broken and exhausted Regina has a deeply sensual and somewhat disturbing dream of/with Emma that may provide a way home for Emma and Snow, and emotional salvation for the former Evil Queen. S2, post 2X05. SQ, semi-graphic.” hello smut i swear there’s a plot

A Category Of It’s Own

the one shot to end all one shots

But What if the Urn Had Wi-Fi

“This fic asks the important question: what if the urn had wi-fi?” ingrid talks manpain, xena fanfiction, and dial-up internet. she and henry try to make their OTP canon.

@cinderfell posted earlier to say, “man i was going to make a joke about a perc'ahlia snow white au with percy as snow white, ripley as the evil queen, and vex as prince charming but??? that’s not even an au that’s straight up canon”

A: Pretty much.

B: My brain being what it is, this happened.

She’s never cared about being the fairest.

Oh, there are ways in which Anna Ripley wants to reign, that much is certain. But for her, it’s a more cerebral matter. She’ll take any route she can to knowledge and power, twist any creation and clever mind to her purposes. If that means finding the best and brightest competition, learning all she can from it, then snuffing it out like a candle flame…

Well, she’s never cared about playing fair, either.

Tonight, she’s sent her lackeys to their duties and ensconced herself in solitude, except for the unwitting company of those beyond her scrying stone. It’s a beautiful little thing, polished to a mirror shine, and it’s whispering to her already, suggesting hints of conversation. A swift caress of her fingertips calls forth individual voices. All of them are familiar, but one of them is intimately so. Anna lifts the stone higher before her, listening to his words the most carefully of all.

Percival de Rolo. Her very favorite, and most hated, subject. Brilliant, reckless when pressed to his limits, the inspiration for so many terrible, wonderful works…and the cause of so much trouble.

She’s so focused on him that she barely hears the other whisper in her ear, belonging to the dark smoke curled around what’s left of her soul.

He destroyed your plans, it reminds her. He deserves to be repaid in kind. He deserves to be repaid with no kindness at all.

Something deep within her thrums with agreement, but still she leans in, trying to focus.

The scrying stone, linked for all these weeks to the gun Percy took from her—and that’ll teach you to steal from me, she thinks—provides another exchange of conversation. From the sounds of it, Percy and his ragtag band are discussing the missing cloak. There’s no need here in private to hold back a sharp-edged little grin at that, and so she lets herself indulge while she tugs that cloak tighter around her shoulders. It’s strangely delightful to hear them so confused, so conflicted, struggling like they are to make their way through the dark.

“When will you figure it out, I wonder?” she asks. There’s a note of dread creeping into Percy’s tone, as if he suspects the truth but won’t admit it just yet. She did leave plenty of signs behind, after all. She wants him to know. Wants to pierce into his thoughts again, poison him from within…

Yes. You will lure him to his end, and we will take everything he owes us. Everything he is.

Anna smiles even wider. Perhaps it’s about that whisper, but she’s also heard the first appalled mention of her—and curiously, it’s not from Percy’s tongue. She listens on, fascinated.

“So even your little druid friend will say what you cannot,” she murmurs. “You still fear me, don’t you? How much did I damage you?”

Not enough. Never enough. You will finish your work this time. And I will undo him.

She doesn’t stop to think of what the demon means by that last, or how much she might be part of its own thieving plans. She’s reveling in Percy’s fraying voice. The sound is so close to her now, with the scrying stone within kissing distance, and it’s delicious.

“This time, I’ll do everything right,” she promises in a whisper. In part, the promise is to Percy. In part, it’s to what haunts her. “You know I’ve learned from what you’ve done. I will destroy you with it. And I’ll leave you buried and broken beneath the glass, Percival. All you have to do…”

Her fingers drop to the gun on her belt. She can’t see it, holstered as it is, but the names on the barrels briefly flicker, his most of all.

“…is take the bait.”

Somewhere in her head there’s the shadow of a laugh. It isn’t long before Anna echoes it, cold as the ice and snow.

A Night Together

Happy birthday, @lala-kate! I hope you enjoy this little drabble of Dimples Queen Missing Year fluff, with some OQ undertones.

And of course, I hope you have a great birthday!

“Everyone’s been under a lot of stress lately,” Charming began as their daily council meeting drew to a close.

Regina rolled her eyes at what she perceived to be the understatement of the day, something Charming managed every day. Everyone was cramped into her palace and living under the threat of the Wicked Witch. They were beyond stressed, one of the few things everyone at this table could agree with.

Snow took her husband’s hand and smiled. “So we thought it would be nice to have a little party. Nothing extravagant–good food, fine wine, good company and some dancing.”

“That sounds great actually,” Belle said with a sigh. “I know I could use a night of fun.”

Charming smiled. “So it’s agreed. Does two days sound good to put this together?”

“I think it’s doable,” Granny agreed. “Can’t wait to kick up my heels again.”

Everyone agreed and Snow turned to Regina, smiling. “Will you be going?”

“No. I remind you that Zelena is after me. So I will be spending my night doing the sensible thing–trying to figure out how to stop her,” Regina replied.

The truth was that the idea of even a small party sent Regina spiraling back to her time as Leopold’s trophy wife. She recalled sitting the shadows while he lavished attention on Snow, the court following suit. Regina was left alone in a room full of people, just wanting to escape and go far away.

“I probably won’t be going either,” Robin Hood said with a sigh. “It would be unfair to ask any of my men to sit out to watch Roland for me.”

Regina rolled her eyes, wondering once again why they let a common thief sit at their council. But she also knew the struggle of being a single parent and she definitely liked Roland more than his father. “I’ll watch him,” she offered.

He sat up straighter, studying her with wide eyes. “You…You will?” he asked.

“Yes, thief. I do have experience caring for children.”

“I know, that’s not…”

Regina cut him off, continuing. “And since I’m not going, this seems like a win-win situation. So go to the party, thief, and be merry. Drink, eat, dance with someone and I’ll keep your boy entertained.”

“I…” Robin took a deep breath. “Thank you, milady.”

“You’re welcome. Bring Roland to my rooms before you head down to the party.” Regina stood and left before anyone could protest.

Oneshot: Confessions Of The Heart

SQ PROMPT: Neverland. Emma’s secret isn’t that she still loves Neal, it’s that she’s in love with Regina (you choose everyone’s reaction to that). When they leave the cave and Regina returns, Neal (jealous and angry), tells her (in front of everyone) what Emma confessed. Regina’s reaction is up to you – anonymous

Thanks for the prompt (sorry it took me so long to get to!) Apologies for any mistakes. Hope you all enjoy :)

Emma shivers as the cool air of the cave whips around her. It’s a stifling place this cave, one that feels like it’s bearing down on you and there’s no way to escape. There isn’t, not without the price of a tightly kept secret. Emma’s heart beats loudly in her chest as sweat beads on her forehead. She has a secret, one she has never confessed. It’s the truest one in her chest and she’s terrified.
