Will you be my valentine?
Dan sighs as he looks around at all of the heart shaped boxes, filled with palatable chocolates and candies. He hadn’t had a valentine in god knows how long, and this year wasn’t any different. When the day had begun to near he thought of purchasing something sweet for someone even sweeter, he longed to give a valentine to the man who held his heart, but every time he thought of it his head swarmed with doubts. Phil observed him, standing at the end of the isle.
“Dan? You alright mate?” He says, his light voice cutting into Dan’s heavy thoughts. Startled he looks up, a pleasant smile working onto his face at the sight of his closest companion.
“Yeah I’m good. Just thinking how I’m spending another Valentine’s Day Han’s style, Solo.” He chuckles at his pun and Phil just stares.
“Did you really just? Never mind, You ready to check out?” Dan nods and they head to the counter. The entirety of checking out is silent. They step out of the little store and start walking towards their flat, only a few blocks away. Dan peers at Phil, confused at his silence, but turns back to staring a the pavement.
Their silence is surrounded by the giggling and affection of lovers who are spending every second to express their love to their partners. Frustrated Dan moves to unlock the door and rushes inside, going to his room and closing the door before falling face first onto his neatly made bed. He could have admitted it then and there, but like a coward he didn’t.
Phil stands in the living room unsure what to do, should he go talk to Dan, tell him the truth, but what if he rejected him. He seemed…forlorn in valentine isle but maybe Phil was just imagining it. He had to say something, another year of hiding his emotions couldn’t happen. Taking a deep breath, Phil walks towards Dan’s door, knocking quick and short, fidgeting with his hands.
Dan draws himself up from his inviting bed, moving to the door and opening it, revealing a nervous looking Phil.
“Is something wrong Phil? You’re looking a bit uneasy, would you like to come in and sit down?” He offers, and Phil almost immediately agrees, sitting on the corner of the checkered blanket. Phil takes a deep breath, looking at his hands.
“Okay, well, um,” Phil starts, stuttering as the words catch in his throat. Taking note of his friends discomfort, Dan places his hand on his arm in a comforting manner, surprised as a pink flush works its way onto Phil’s cheeks. “Willyoubemyvalentine?” Phil says quickly, rushing through his words nervously.
“I didn’t quite catch that, can you say it again?” Dan asks, quirking his head to the side adorably. Taking a deep breath, Phil repeats himself slower, and a look of surprise dawns on Dan’s face.
“Will you be my valentine? I know this is out of the blue, but I…I really like you, and I don’t really want to go another year of saying that I’ll tell you later, and then not saying it. So Dan, will you be my valentine?” As he speaks, Phil watches Dan’s face for a reaction.
Shell-shocked Dan just stares at his friend, butterflies catching all responses before he can say them. They sit there in silence for a few moments before Phil begins stuttering out apologies and moving towards the door to escape what he thinks is a mistake, but just as he reaches the door, Dan is there, blocking him. Dan presses his lips softly to Phil’s, unsure what to say and hoping that the kiss conveys the words he can’t speak. He pulls back nervously, looking at Phil’s pink face.
“Yes, I’ll be your valentine.”
