yosemite milky way

Liberty cap

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England is currently exhibiting the shortlisted entries for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. This amazing picture of the Milky Way and orographic lenticular clouds hanging above Liberty Cap, a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, was taken by Rogelio Bernal Andreo.

Summertime vacation timelapse tour of Yosemite National Park. For the first half you can watch shadows of clouds dance over the mountains and forests, and in the second half the night and the Milky Way surround a campsite.

My first glimpse at the milky way - Yosemite National Park, July 2016

this might be hard to believe, but despite all of my previous hiking experience I had never seen the milky way in the night sky before this trip to yosemite. this time I was was lucky to be awake and have a cloudless night with little light pollution. a combination that is pretty hard to find these days. I should probably try to stay awake more often when I do find that combo.

this was also the first time I figured I should buy a dedicated night sky lens, and my experiences this year trying to photograph the northern lights cemented that idea. so while I’m still very happy I bought my macro lens first, this year I’m going to buy dedicated night photography lens before I start my hiking trips in the summer.
