Smoky. She was known as the “Yorkie Doodle Dandy.” Smoky was found in an abandoned foxhole in the New Guinea jungle by an American soldier. Corporal William Wynne carried Smoky through two years of combat in the Pacific. Smoky further flew 12 combat missions in an Air Force Recon role, receiving eight battle stars. Smoky heroically warned her owner of incoming shells on one occasion, saving his life. Later, she crossed a battle field carrying communications wires between troops. 

Smoky is also credited with being America’s first therapy dog.
