up until this moment i hadn’t truly realized how tidy yuuri n victor are ,,,, like

this isn’t just clean. this is borderline “neat freak” clean. this is “if it’s not a right angle it is a WRONG angle” clean. this is “i organize the clothes in my wardrobe first by type and then by colour” clean. this is “if u put a cold drink on the table without using a coaster i will chase u around the apartment with my skates” clean.

everymanwillbeaking  asked:

'there’s a line further into the fic about yuuri loving the ice, but loving it even more because viktor existed, and honestly i think that’s the truth.' yes!!!!!!! this!!!!!!! yuuri's been skating since before he found out about victor, but seeing him on ice amplified that love and helped feed his drive. U Get It and I Lov U Olliepop

yessssssss yuuri loves skating so so much, and definitely would’ve continued skating even if viktor wasn’t there—although viktor’s existence certainly did help yuuri’s motivation grow and grow so that he could reach the world stage.

the art books and canon even have yuuri skating as a wee bab and he’s probably been competing in novice competitions before he saw viktor skating on that grainy tv in hasetsu ice castle. i’m fairly sure yuuri fell in love that day (or at least gained a large admiration), thus deepening his love and drive for skating.

(bby yuuri showing off the “tricks” he could do, probably around 5 years old)

but honestly yuuri is a talented skater all on his own, and the show is about yuuri discovering how to love himself and have confidence in his abilities on the ice. bc damn have you seen the official jsf website in the show? yuuri’s japan’s ace for a reason, and that’s bc he’s heckin great.

viktor allowed yuuri to blossom to his fullest potential with only the way that he could, through love and belief and flitting through the walls that yuuri threw before him with ease.

and basically, while viktor played a huge role in yuuri’s skating career (both before and after they met), he was not the cause of it.

SO KUBO-SENSEI JUST CONFIRMED IN AN INTERVIEW THAT VIKTOR AND YUURI ARE SOULMATES

AND OBVIOUSLY, just like the rest of the fandom i was sCREAMING but then i had a flashback to my philosophy classes and i remembered this:

according to plato, the origin of soulmates is that humans used to have four arms and four legs and a head with two faces. but that annoyed zeus, who determined they should be split in half so they wouldn’t be as powerful and consequentially there would be more people to praise the gods and all that jazz, and it was said that when the two separated humans find each other there would be a deep understanding of one another and they would feel unified, and then they would be truly happy.

AND THEN I THOUGHT “BUT WAIT, THIS SOUNDS FAMILIAR”

THE CONCLUSION OF STAMMI VICINO IS ABOUT FINDING YOUR SOULMATE

(for @yoituuri and @starryfeathers. I accidentally deleted this whole thing once so hopefully it doesn’t happen again/ it’s not rushed. I hope you enjoy you two, and anybody else who reads this!)

I made a post about my favorite boy Victor not too long ago, and I mentioned a shot in passing that I really loved, but because it wasn’t the focus of the post, I didn’t go into it. I would like to now. Here it is:

This is the first glimpse of Victor we get within canon. Well, beyond the opening sequence with Yuuri watching Victor skate as they grow up but I think we can all agree that was outside of canon and can be discarded here.

Anyway.

It’s a damn good first glimpse. As you’ve probably already noticed, Victor’s eyes are covered. Deliberately. Dude fuckin does a twirl and the camera is framed in such a way that we don’t get to see his eyes until he looks up for the cameras. That’s an interesting touch, for several reasons.

First, when a character’s eyes are not visible, it implies something is hidden within them. A trait, motivation, true emotions, etc etc.

Secondly, the fact that we can’t see Victor’s eyes until he turns to the cameras with that fake-ass media smile. In this scene, we’re being treated as the public. Victor is immediately hiding from us and the rest of the world. You know, something he does all the goddamn time.

Victor is scarily good at masking. For those who don’t know what I mean, masking is the act of hiding one’s true personality, desires, and/or emotions to conform to society. I mask due to past trauma. Victor masks to meet public expectation.

You’ve probably guessed already that masking is incredibly unhealthy–it’s repression, after all. If it gets bad enough, you’ll stop knowing where masking ends and you begin. Sometimes it takes me months to figure out how I feel about something because I need to sort through so many layers of masking and anxiety and doubt. It’s really difficult sometimes.

We see tons of lovely examples of Victor masking throughout the show. Here are a few off the top of my head:

(^absolutely terrified vitya trying to be smooth)

(^living up to his press image)

(^so incredibly upset on so many levels but he doesn’t dare show it)

(^pissed enough that yuuri picks up on it. and then acts dishonestly w/ yuuri by trying to come off as pleasant)

(i love that yuuri is comfortable enough by this point to call victor out on his bs. if you’re gonna get mad, get mad)

(you can actually see Victor’s hand shake if you watch the scene. boy is so pissed and he’s holding it in)

etc etc.

Victor is actually incredibly reserved in all the emotions he shows, especially if it’s anger or sadness. For most of the series, he only lets himself go in front of Yuuri or alone. Victor hides from himself, he hides from Yuuri, and it helps no one in the end.

The beach sequence, actually, is important to this idea too. As we know, Victor asks Yuuri what he wants them to be.

And then he lists off all these options before essentially asking to go out with him, but in a way that says he’s too scared to do it outright.

Now, this is partially to gauge Yuuri’s feelings towards him, but it’s also highly revealing of Victor’s self-worth. He’s willing to put on any mask, any persona to be with Yuuri. Yuuri, of course, doesn’t want this at all.

🚨 HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP ALERT!🚨

And looking at Victor’s reaction (guarded surprise)

This may be the first time Victor has been asked to just be himself.

So if Victor was a world champion at 16

(boy is 15-16 in that article)

He must have been skating for a while beforehand. We can probably approximate by saying he started competitions around the time Yuri did, which I estimate to be about 12-13. However, Victor does say this

And if we’re to believe him, 27-20=7, and therefore something happened at the age of 7 to force Victor into backing away from others and working himself to the bone. Uhm, wow. I don’t know how accurate it is to say that, but regardless, he’s been in the public eye for a long fuckin time.

Victor has spent this long fuckin time building an image: elegance, confidence, charming yet untouchable. The perfect playboy, in a way. This is the person he presents to the public. I think he’s been masking like this for so long he forgot that this isn’t who he is–Victor has the ability to be all those things, but it’s not who he is. Victor is excitable, bubbly, caring, vulnerable, depressed, lonely, hardworking…Yuuri, by asking Victor to be himself, released a metaphorical floodgate on Victor’s emotions. He’s broken that carefully crafted persona.

Victor is now publicly goofy and affectionate

(i love how he hides his face a little here…how cute and shy while showing off that he’s yuuri’s)

And can drop his composure comfortably

(also vitya always wears gloves to competitions until they get the rings and then victor keeps the gloves off completely :v)

I love that Victor’s relationship with Yuuri has allowed him to find himself again, and peel away those masks to live and breathe and love as he was always meant to.

Yuuri Katsuki is a sucker for PDA

Okay so I see a characterisation I totally disagree with incredibly often, and that’s the fact that Yuuri, being stereotypically Japanese, is uncomfortable with PDA. And whilst I agree that this headcanon is kind of cute and allows for some great extra!Viktor content, I think it’s fundamentally wrong.

Yes this is the official art that triggered this in my mind. Just look how comfortable Yuuri is here, whilst essentially being cuddled by Viktor out in the open.

Look at him literally launching himself into Viktor’s arms.

That one time Yuuri declared his love for Viktor on television

He literally initiated this on international television

And let us not forget this kiss which he had no problem with

Again, yanking Viktor in by the tie literally because he felt possessive

Literally smiling at Viktor as he does this

You can even see people react to the PDA in this scene

There is no way you could call Yuuri passive in this moment

Let us not forget Yuuri literally grinding on Viktor

And, sober, straddling Viktor in public

Honestly, there is no real canon evidence in my mind to suggest Yuuri is uncomfortable with displays of affection. He either lets Viktor do it whilst making no effort to stop him (even if he is shown to look slightly embarrassed), or is the one initiating PDA. I think it could even be argued that Yuuri does it more than Viktor.

If this is Yuuri now, just imagine what he could be like a year or two on. Even as far as actually kissing in public, I don’t think I could call OOC. I feel like it’s the act itself Yuuri might be shy about, rather than if people are watching or not. In fact, I believe possessiveness is entirely in his personality.

tl;dr Yuuri Katsuki is grossly affectionate in public and should probably learn some decency

WHAT IS THAT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT VICTOR’S HAND BEING CONSTANTLY ATTACHED TO YUURI?!?!?

SO MANY WONDER ABOUT THIS, JUST USE YOUR BRAIN FOR ONCE!! ISN’T IT OBVIOUS:

SO HERE’S THE LOGIC BEHIND IT: YUURI STOLE VICTOR’S HEART. HE HAS NOW 2 HEARTS BEATING IN HIS CHEST AND VICTOR NEEDS TO BE CONNECTED(see blood vessels at his hand) IN ORDER TO BE KEPT ALIVE!

Sochi Banquet

I love how tentatively Viktor approached Yuuri during the Sochi banquet. Look at how many shots it took for this boy to get to Yuuri.

I find this to be especially precious given how Viktor already got rejected by Yuuri earlier that evening.

For all of his being a celebrity, Viktor does not strike me as the kind of person who can easily brush off another person’s dislike of him. Hell, he made a career out of pleasing everyone, and while I don’t think he would cry over another person’s opinion of him, neither does he seem like someone who could just easily dismiss it or not be hurt. I mean look at this face:

His reservations about approaching the fascinating Japanese boy were therefore perfectly understandable. We can even clearly see that he kept his distance for a bit at first.

But like a moth to a flame,

this precious boy

can’t seem to help himself.

And for a while it doesn’t seem like Yuuri even noticed him there?

Oh, but when he did…

It became such an unforgettable night.

Lmao, for Viktor anyway.

Poor Vitya.

we need to take a moment to appreciate how viktor nikiforov, inventor of being extra, completely misread yuuri and was firmly believing he would get laid on night one

first, yuuri basically barges into the room where viktor is minding his business and relaxing after his long travel

so he just sees that like: oh great! so you’re just as eager for this as i am? better bless you with a display of my hot bod yuuri i can’t stop thinking about you since the banquet i’m desperate

then all we know is that yuuri screams (same tbh) and then we get this bit of information on the next episode:

so they barely spoke??? yuuri fainted and woke up when viktor was napping??? we’ll never know

but then viktor wakes up, exuding extra realness:

VIKTOR YOU LITERALLY JUST HAD DINNER YOU JUST SLEEP AND EAT HOW DO YOU EVEN MAINTAIN THAT PERFECT BODY

or maybe it’s just hungry for dick which all things considered is a possibility

sO WHILE HE GETS HIS HUNGER SATED HE JUST ROASTS OUR BEST BOY

ouch, vitya, that was harsh??? but it’s also important to remember we get a lot of examples that show viktor isn’t really savvy when it comes about reading people and that he’s capable of delivering harsh truths with a hear-shapped smile on his face

BUT NO!!! YA BOY VITYA IS NOT DONE, as soon as they get some alone time he tries to drop some questionable hints

oh yuuri i’m so sorry i had to be like that earlier, i’m just going for angry coach on the streets, passionate lover in the sheets

which,,,,you know…

AND YET VIKTOR IS JUST LIKE “NAH IT’LL BE FINE HE’S JUST PLAYING SHY/HARD TO GET THERE’S NO WAY TO REFUSE THIS HOT SLAV BODY” AND HE FIRMLY BELIEVES YUURI WILL GO FULL HOMO WITH HIM THAT SAME NIGHT

HE EVEN BRINGS HIS PILLOW I LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH??

if anything viktor nikiforov is a symbol of perseverance and has unshakeable confidence in what he does, bless him

I’ve wanted to talk for So Long about the portrayal of anxiety in YOI but I’ve been having so much trouble putting together what I want to say in the most effective manner. I kept trying to come at this in a more analytical fashion, but considering that this is such a personally important topic to me, I’m going to try a more emotional approach. Something I don’t normally do.

So really, to start off, I wanna say that I’m so damn thankful for the way Yuuri is written. Really, seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever had the ability to relate more to character; Yuuri is close to a mirror of my own experiences with anxiety and it’s so fantastic to have a model of development and growth for me and people like me. I found the portrayal to be frighteningly accurate, from types of thoughts, behaviors, mannerisms… I think the episode that stood out to me the most in terms of Yuuri’s anxiety was ep7, aka Yuuri’s on-screen panic attack episode.

The first thing I noticed was this:

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself in that exact position. I bounce my legs when I panic, just like Yuuri is doing here. Head in his hands, breathing heavily, bouncing and jostling limbs. This isn’t the Mary-Sue cutesy portrayal of anxiety–this is a real anxiety disorder. It’s not pretty. It’s not easy. It can’t be fixed with a single word or a touch or a person. Quite frankly, it’s ugly and you lose control of your body.

Viktor is the best son in law

Can we just talk about how much Toshiya and Hiroko probably love Viktor aka their new son in law

Aside from Toshiya bullshitting that he doesn’t know exactly who Viktor Nikiforov in this moment (like come on, unless he hasn’t been inside Yuuri’s bedroom or spoken to his son about his interests in eleven years), and just being a wing man here, I like to think that they had a full conversation. I mean, Makkachin had obviously been given free reign of the house at this point, so they must have talked about that.

What I like to think went down is Viktor walked in with a rehearsed (and slightly mispronounced) sentence of Japanese like “Konnichiwa! Watashi no namae wa Viktor-”

And Toshiya looks at him like “Here for Yuuri?”

“Yes! I’m looking for Yuuri!” All hearts and smiles. “I want to coach him in figure skating!” And then goes into a long explanation of how great Yuuri indeed is.

And of course he knows enough English to understand the meaning of that, so he politely directs Viktor to the onsen whilst he waits.

But aside from that.

Viktor has been there for… two hours at this point? Probably even less, but maybe not. Hiroko is already casually referring to him as Vicchan. He’s been adopted swiftly.

She sounds and looks so fond of him.

SHE LOOKS SO DAMN PLEASED WHEN VIKTOR COMPLIMENTS THE KATSUDON

And let’s just remember that Viktor is a walking advertisement at this rate. Given how much the Katsukis talk about promoting tourism, they probably adore him for it too

Also Yuuri is just as bad as he is lmao

Also the fact that the Katsukis are trusted with Makkachin says a lot. They ARE family at this point.

I hinestly think Hiroko and Toshiya would genuinely be over the moon when the engagement is announced. It’s one thing to mentally adopt Viktor, and another to ACTUALLY have him as their son in law.

TLDR, Viktor and the Katsuki’s have an adorable relationship I wish was explored more

Figure Skating Jumps With Yuuri and Viktor

This blog started out as a Yuri!!! on Ice trash blog, but somewhere along the way, my love for figure skating was rekindled. My blog now doubles as a figure skating… trash blog, lol! Yeah, I have no life.

Anyway! Jumps - wonderful to watch, confusing af to recognize. If this is your usual sentiment, then you have come to the right place! Let Yuuri and Viktor show you the different jumps done by figure skaters, as well as tips on how to recognize them.

Jumps are actually fairly easy to recognize once you know what to look for. The first thing to look for is how skaters propel themselves off the ice. Was there a toe pick assist - meaning did the other foot’s toe pick help the skater push off the ice? Or was the skater propelled solely by their knees? The former is called a toe jump, because the toe pick was used to lift off the ice. The latter is called an edge jump, because the skater jumped off directly from an edge of their skating blade. This is most recognizable through a deeper bend in the knees, because without a toe pick assist, the strength of the jump comes solely from the knees.

HOLD UP… EDGES???

Right, so we also need to understand edges first. If you search for close ups of skating blades viewed from the back, you will find that there is something like a hollow on the bottom of the blade so that there are two edges. If you were to stand with your feet just slightly apart, the inside edges would be the edges in line with your inner thighs (and calves, whatever). Conversely, the outside edges would be the edges that are facing the outside world.

Now, the great thing is all jumps are landed at the back outside edge. Which foot depends on the skater. Yuuri and Viktor both seem to favor landing on their right foot. Most skaters have a preferred landing foot, but to help you visualize, a skater who prefers landing on his right foot, for example, would always land tilted slightly to the right, because he is landing on his right outside edge.

So if it is not the landing that differentiates the jumps, what does? Yep, you got it - the entry.

Now that we have the basics down, time for the fun part: the different kinds of jumps!

EDGE JUMPS

Loop: Entered at the back outside edge of the same foot. You land exactly where you started, hence the “loop”. Example of a loop is the first gif, which is a loop done by Yuuri. The knee bend is not very clear, but see how his right foot is tilted to the right and slightly back? Clear back outside edge, landed also on his right foot.

Salchow: Yuuri’s bane of a jump is entered at the back inside edge of the opposite foot. The fun thing about the Salchow is that apart from the usual clues (knee bend and tilt of the foot), the nature of the landing is such that the entry leg sweeps into a wide arch once the skater lands on the opposite leg. Example is the second gif, done by Yuuri. See how Yuuri bends his knees? That is an obvious edge jump. See how his left foot tilts slightly inwards (inside edge take-off) before jumping off? Another interesting thing about this gif is Yuuri’s entry on the Salchow – it looked like he jumped from both feet. Two-footed Salchows are right or wrong depending on who you ask, but the idea is that the skater should still be taking off from the correct foot and the correct edge when entering the Salchow.

Axel: Yuuri’s favorite is also a common favorite among fans because it is easily recognizable AND it is the jump type with the highest points. The Axel is the only jump entered facing forward. Because of this entry, however, to land on the back outside edge (where all jumps land), you have to make an extra half rotation. That means a triple Axel is actually an Axel with three-and-a-half rotations, and this is also why it is given the most points. Also because of this, a quad Axel is the only remaining possible quad jump that has not yet been landed. (Can you imagine having to do four-and-a-half rotations?) Example, of course, is our boy Yuuri nailing that triple Axel in the third gif.

TOE JUMPS

Toe Loop: Arguably the easiest jump, it is basically a loop with a toe pick assist. With the extra assist, it is usually the first quad landed by most male skaters, and in the show, this is the only quad Phichit can land. The fourth gif is a triple toe loop done by Viktor. See the way his left toe pick helps him off the ice? See how cleanly he takes off (slight outside tilt of his right foot) and lands on the same foot (same outside tilt)?

Flip: Viktor’s signature quad, the flip jump is entered by the back inside edge of the opposite foot. Enter on the inside edge of one foot, land at the outside edge of the other foot - hence, you flip. You can also think of it as a Salchow with a toe pick assist. The fifth gif is a triple flip done by Viktor. I chose his triple flip because the animation is clearer here. See how his right leg swings for that toe pick assist? His left entry foot is tilted slightly inwards to jump from his inside edge, and he then lands on his usual right landing foot (tilted slightly outwards to the back outside edge). (Bonus: The quad flip in particular is interesting to watch out for because for some reason, the skaters do a full turn before the jump, which is not as obviously done when skaters do a triple flip instead. It makes the quad version look dramatic, at least especially in the show when Yuuri and Viktor do it with that solemn look on their faces and all, but it’s also fun to watch when real-life figure skaters like Shoma Uno - who was the first to land the quad flip - also does that full turn before jumping. Somebody explain this to me, though. What physics is at work there? Idk.)

Lutz: Chris’ signature jump and my personal favorite is the Lutz, which is entered on the back outside edge of the opposite foot. The interesting thing about the Lutz is that because it is entered from the outside edge of the opposite foot, it is counter-rotated - that means the skater goes one direction then spins the opposite direction. It is a high difficulty jump and so gets the second highest base score after the Axel. The last gif shown here is a Lutz done together by Yuuri and Viktor, and I slowed the gif down a bit to better show the characteristics of the jump. Viktor actually gives the more consistently clear example of Lutzes in the show, but see how Yuuri enters the jump on the first few frames? That is typical Lutz entry, where the skater’s entry foot crosses over to the opposite side to give it that tilt it needs so they jump from the back outside edge. See how Viktor’s left foot is slightly tilted so you see underneath his skate? He is tilted slightly to the left, but he then jumps counter-clockwise, even if with that tilt, his natural spin would have been clockwise. He then lands on his right foot on the outside edge.

And there you have it! The six types of figure skating jumps. I hope that was helpful to those who are interested in learning to recognize these awesome jumps. The more figure skating fans, the merrier, I say!

(Any questions on these jumps? Leave me a message and talk skating to me. I would love to answer your questions! ♡)

i know it’s kind of a meme in the fandom that viktor thought making A SCENE and greeting yuuri naked in japan but i think that was completely unintentional? which makes it even funnier imo?

allow me to explain

i don’t know exactly how long after yuuri’s video went viral that this scene happens, but it’s safe to say that at least a couple of days passed? perhaps a week or a bit more, even though the anime makes it look like it’s on the next day?

so he’s been avoiding the media for days, keeping his phone off so absolutely nobody’s going to be able to reach him until people forget about this madness

which means he’s also entirely clueless about the rumors of viktor being his coach

and it makes it so much funnier because we know yuuri’s dad doesn’t know jack shit about figure skating, and viktor doesn’t know how to speak japanese AND IT WAS PROBABLY TOSHIYA WHO FIRST TALKED TO VIKTOR WHEN HE ARRIVED AT YU-TOPIA?

TOSHIYA IF YOU’D ONLY GET INTO YOUR SON’S ROOM, LOOKED AROUND AND DID THE MATH YOU WOULD KNOW

so what has happened was probably something like “i have no idea what you’re saying mr. foreign-dude but you’re probably here for our famous onsen so yes make yourself comfortable” which viktor, tired as fuck from his travel (a long ass flight from st. petersburg to tokyo, probably? plus the train from tokyo to hasetsu?) GLADLY ACCEPTS

hell yeah i’m going to enjoy the fuck out of his hot spring

since yuuri is nowhere to be seen why not take some time to relax after a long travel, am i right

it’s not like viktor would understand if yuuri’s parents were to say “oh yes yuuri is holed up in his bedroom but he’ll come out eventually” so as viktor is pretty sure he found the right place and that yuuri is there he’ll just wait and have a nice soak meanwhile

AND THEN YUURI JUST BARGES INTO THE ROOM WHERE VIKTOR IS BATHING

well, this was not how i had planned this to go but here you are?

AND OF COURSE, STANDING UP WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY BUT VIKTOR BASICALLY INVENTED BEING EXTRA AND… LET ME SHOW YOU MY HOT BOD BECAUSE I GOT TO SEE YOUR ALMOST-EVERYTHING AT THE BANQUET SO I THINK IT’S FAIR YOU GET TO SEE ME NOW AM I RIGHT???

in viktor’s mind, yuuri is this extroverted, outgoing party animal he got to know at the banquet and was absolutely mesmerized by, so he probably thinks yuuri’s going to be alright with this extra introduction? also knowing yuuri lives and probably worked at the onsen for a while viktor maybe just assumes he’s probably unfazed by nudity?

oh viktor, little did you know

it just gets funnier the more you look into it

guys I missed having canon victuuri feels and I am still rewatching the anime (probably will do until we get second season) and I just noticed something from the ending song

I am sorry if this has been done before but LOOK AT THIS

so we all know the ending song is instagram posts (and idk why I never thought about pausing to see what they have written under the pictures until now)

so we have this one first and under it victor wrote this

Nakasu in Japan, where is that?

oh look it’s all the way in fukuoka! an hour drive away!

did he drive there alone? he couldn’t have gotten all the way there only to drink alone, take the train?

and trust me you wouldn’t want to take a train to another city alone when you have a Japanese friend to save you the trouble of getting lost

so yeah why not take yuuri on date, that he doesn’t know is a date, yet

(notice he is wearing the same shirt from the previous post) it’s already morning

oh time-

flies so fast

when does time fly so fast? when you enjoy it and don’t want it to end

let’s take a look at how they look at each other again

and I can’t work out what yuuri is holding but I’d like to think its a stuffed poodle they won at an arcade or something

I’ve been toying with the idea for a long time that some of the things Yuuri says, especially in the first couple episodes, are not exactly the truth and should be looked into farther. Honestly, we knew Yuuri was unreliable the moment the show opened–he referred to himself as “dime-a-dozen,” when he is literally the only male skater certified by the JSF within canonverse.

And he made it to the GPF, you know? He’s one of the top 6 skaters in the world, right off the bat! It took us a few episodes to understand Yuuri’s character to realize the context of these statements, but we figured out pretty early on that Yuuri is the embodiment of Unreliable Narrator™. Especially after ep10, jfc.

Anyway, why I’m bringing this up is because Kubo seemed to confirm a little theory of mine I’ve had stewing for a while and I wanted to share it with you.

So. Episode 1. The commemorative photo scene.

I wanna first establish that this scene took place before the banquet. During the series run, sometime just afterwards, and occasionally even now there’s debate over when that scene took place. It wouldn’t make sense to happen after the banquet because they’re not only still wearing the team jackets, but they’re also wearing passes

The outside sign has information about the competition

and Victor is talking to Yuri about his routines

which he probably wouldn’t do if it was up to a day later.

We know how the rest of the scene goes. Victor seems to not recognize Yuuri at all, mistakes him for a fan, asks if he wants a photo, and then Yuuri leaves, thoroughly humiliated. Or, at least, that’s Yuuri’s version of what happened. I think generally everything that was said got said, all the movements and series of events were the same, but the implications of the offer were different.

I have multiple anxiety disorders. When I remember something that I felt was a misstep or caused embarrassment, I always remember it slightly off. A person’s tone is more mocking or condescending, my reaction is worse than it was. There’s a lot of shame when it comes to anxiety and your mind immediately assumes you’re viewed to be–and are–on a lower pedestal than everyone else. Yuuri, clearly, has severe anxiety, so I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to think that, since this is from his perspective, maybe reality is a bit different than what he is able to give us.

Anyway, my thoughts had no basis, so I’ve kept them to myself, but then Kubo came out and said this:

and then the fanbase lit up in flames because Victor know Yuuri was a fan before the banquet. But this also implies one thing I got super excited about: Victor has seen him skate, before the commemorative photo scene.

meaning that everyone’s preconception that Victor mistook Yuuri for a fan has been completely blown out of the water.

So, why would Victor ask him about a photo then?

I think it’s important to keep in mind that Victor likes to make people feel good about their abilities. He likes teaching others, and he likes motivating them too. He gets pleasure out of seeing people rise to their potential.

Although he’s flighty and kind of an airhead, and tends to ignore what he doesn’t find interesting, I don’t think Victor would ignore the scorings or the competitors landing below 3rd place. Victor clearly knew that Yuuri fell to last place, hard. This is just speculation, but maybe Yuri mentioned to Victor the incident with Yuuri crying in the bathroom. Or, perhaps Victor had already seen the press about Yuuri: he’s notorious for losing his nerve during competitions and failing to meet his potential. When Yuuri goes down, he tends to crash and burn.

(also honda’s words imply yuuri usually performs very well)

Victor likes making people happy and better versions of themselves. Now he’s faced with the competitor who fell to last place, staring at him a few feet away. A competitor who is known for his anxiety and tendency to shy away from others. A competitor who just so happens to be a fan. So, what is Victor to do to help Yuuri feel better, or even open up a bit?

Initiate conversation. Try to reel him in to interacting with an open, non-threatening question and a tried-and-true welcoming smile.

“Commemorative Photo?”

Victor didn’t mistake Yuuri for a non-competing fan, he knew who Yuuri was and was just trying his best to make Yuuri feel better. Victor, as we’ve seen throughout the series, resorts to giving comfort through action rather than words first and foremost. Unfortunately for him, this is not what Yuuri needs.

It backfired. But I think Victor had good intentions. They were strangers so it’s not like Victor could just walk up and start a motivating speech. He tried to invite Yuuri to talk to him, someone Yuuri looked up to, and maybe they could talk and Victor could brighten his day?

Victor wasn’t very tactile, and Yuuri didn’t stand his ground and identify himself, so they got nowhere with that.

I’m so glad Kubo said this. This face looks like a combination of surprise and disappointment, perhaps not only in Yuuri rejecting him but also in himself for not being able to help.

and this face

looks more concerned and surprised that Yuuri showed rather than like “oh shit, he’s a competitor.”

Poor Yuuri. Poor Victor. They really need to communicate better.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN

a smile so peaceful and pure and not-angsty on Yurio’s face???? HAVE YOU???

VIKTOR AND YUURI DRUNK AT THE SAME TIME, TOGETHER, AS DADS WATCHING OVER THEIR SON AND HIS BFF, ARE AN A+++++++++++++++++++++++ BONUS I CANNOT EVEN

THERE IS SO MUCH HEADCANON FAN SERVICE ALL IN ONE PIECE OF ART AND IT IS A MASTERPIECE

do you guys ever think about how yuri plisetsky, at just age fifteen, has apparently been supporting his family through his figure skating via government grants which means not only does he have to regularly compete, but he always has to do well and to consistently perform, so he’s probably never allowed to have an off performance or it means less money, less support, less opportunities, and when victor nikiforov himself, five time world champion, offers to choreograph a program for him, yuri jumps at the chance because yes, think of how much he could get if he won his very first grand prix series off of victor’s choreography – think of his ailing grandfather whom he loves so much, an absentee mother – figure skating is everything to yuri, it’s the only thing he thinks he has to offer, it’s the thing he relies on the most for emotional and financial support, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. so he throws everything onto the ice, wins the junior championship just as victor said, and now he’s about to make his pro senior debut and he’s gonna get victor to make good on his promise and–

victor just… disappears. flies across the world, completely forgets he ever promised yuri anything, turns around and blatantly uses yuri while making it clear that beyond a week’s worth of coaching him on a program, victor has no intentions of giving yuri anything bc he’s so wrapped up in yuuri

and yuri feels – abandoned, betrayed, hurt; left behind again like he always is, left waiting like he always is, used as a means to an end; is it any wonder he’s pissed off? but then this beautiful, brilliant boy takes a program he only spent a week learning from its choreographer – he takes that program, refines it, improves it and breaks victor’s world record with it, slaps victor in the face with it by winning over yuuri and telling him, victor nikiforov is dead, victor isn’t everything yuri had thought he would be and it doesn’t matter bc yuri will make himself, define himself, choose things for himself now.

do you ever think about this bc i do and it hurts me but i love this boy so much, he deserves everything

How much does Yuuri know?

Here’s something I’ve been wondering for a while.

In Barcelona, Victor finds out that Yuuri doesn’t remember the banquet.

They’re in a public place, they’re with their friends, and the situation is hilarious for almost everyone else, except it’s annoying for Yuri P., awkward and embarrassing for Yuuri, and if I have to guess I’d say that it’s awkward, slightly painful and a bit frustrating for Victor (though he probably also finds it a bit funny).

It’s really not the right place and time for Victor and Yuuri to talk about it in depth, especially considering that the focus shifts right away to the rings they’re wearing and their meaning.

After JJ makes his entrance, they all leave and presumably go back to the hotel, where we can only assume Yuuri had more questions about the banquet. And this is exactly what I’ve been wondering about.

Does Yuuri ask Victor for banquet details? Does Victor talk about it of his own accord?

I like to think that Victor does in fact share some things about that evening:

My question is: does Victor share The Moment? You know, this one?

The Moment all our hearts collectively broke because Victor had been pining over Yuuri since before going to Hasetsu. The Moment Victor fell in love.

Because we watch the rest of the show with the new knowledge that Victor was in love (or had a major crush at the very least) with Yuuri, I think we all kind of assumed that Yuuri must also know the full extend of it.

But does he?

Does Victor really tell Yuuri all of it? The way I see it, there are two options:

  • Victor tells Yuuri everything. How smitten he was with Yuuri. How much it hurt when he didn’t call him, didn’t send any signals, didn’t show up at competitions. And finally, how he thought that video was a direct message for him to go to Hasetsu and make good on his promise to be Yuuri’s coach. And how it confused the hell out of him when Yuuri acted all shy around him.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of this option. Victor has known Yuuri for a while at this point, and he knows about his anxiety and his low self-esteem. He has a big competition ahead of him, and he doesn’t need Victor adding to his anxiety by telling him how he (unintentionally) hurt him by leading him on, seducing him and abandoning him just like in the Eros story he tells in his SP.

  • Victor only shares the bare minimum. He tells Yuuri that coming to Hasetsu to be his coach wasn’t, in fact, a decision made on a whim, but it was something Yuuri (drunkenly) asked him. And because Victor was getting bored with his skating and his life, he was glad to do it, and glad that this made it possible for them fall in love with each other. What he doesn’t share is the pining and the hurt.

I personally think that this is what happened, because Victor has learned how sensitive Yuuri is (even though he still doesn’t fully know how Yuuri truly feels about Victor leaving ice skating - something he finds out at the end of episode 11). He doesn’t need Yuuri to know he unintentionally hurt him, because it doesn’t matter anymore, and telling him would only hurt Yuuri, and that’s the last thing Victor wants.

TL;DR: we know exactly when Victor fell in love with Yuuri but Yuuri probably doesn’t know.

Yuuri surprising Victor

One thing that is interesting about Victor is how obsessed he seems to be with surprising people and being surprised. In fact, the very first line of anime tells us that:

In the second episode, we learn that Victor’s main goal as a skater is not to win but to surprise his audience the way he hasn’t before. And it makes sense because Victor is obviously an artist as much as an athlete - he creates stories with his choreographies and he’s extremely talented with that. But now he can’t do it anymore.

When I watched it the first time I thought it was because of the reason Yurio gives in this scene - that Victor was just so good so long that no one is really surprised that he wins. But I don’t think this is really Victor’s case and that’s because of the other thing Yurio says then.

What Victor seeks so desperately that he came to Japan without a hesitation is apparently an inspiration. He can’t surprise people because there’s nothing to surprise him anymore. Nothing except of Yuuri of course.

Now, let’s stop there for a second. Because we have Victor Nikiforov, who has the world at his feet, who has so much money and is surrounded by beautiful things, who travels around the world and does what he loves for living and he is bored. Or rather tired. Unhappy. Lonely and forgetful and despair. In other words, he’s probably depressed, he wants to feel something true and deep again and he can’t. And this is where Yuuri enters the stage.

Yuuri

who

surprises

him

all

the

time.

Victor falls in love with Yuuri more and more every day because he makes him feel things he never felt before. Because he’s so beautiful it helps Victor get out from his mental dark place. Because he surprises him. What Victor needed was not only an inspiration for his skating but also to have someone make the same effort for him as he did for other people. And Yuuri does exactly that.

What Yurio doesn’t know in the second episode is that Yuuri is the first and only person that surprised Victor in a very long time. But his words are important because from that moment the only thing that Yuuri wants is to show Victor that he is worth his attention.

And he does. He does it from the first moment they meet and he really turns out to be the only person to satisfy him.

Victor spend his whole life working very hard to surprise people and make them happy by his skating and it only gave him depression but then the one thing he really needed and wanted was for someone to do the same thing specifically for him and Yuuri showed up and absolutely smashed his expectations. And then Yuuri wanted to surprise Victor as much as he always surprised him at least once and in fact, he has done that every day since they’d met. And this is just so beautiful I may be crying right now.

And then they became canon and surprised us all and I’ll be forever grateful for that.

One little thing about the banquet reveal that left me unsure whether to laugh or weep

I know the fandom’s collectively lose their minds over poor Victor for crushing on a guy who doesn’t remember grinding him, but has anyone talked about Victor’s face right before Yuuri revealed that he forgot the whole thing?

because here he is, thinking that’s Yuuri’s gonna talk about how he made Victor falls head-over-heels with his superb dance moves invited five-time-consecutive world champion Victor Nikiforov to be his coach.

yea tell them babe tell them how you make me yours with your half-naked eros *bashfully lowering my gaze*
