yoga for cramps

Why I stand with Planned Parenthood

Multiple gynos refused me an IUD because  “oh, it hurts so much to put in when you’ve not had kids! We don’t want to put you in pain!!”

I was at a 7-9 on the pain scale regularly for my periods, and the docs were determined to make me run the gauntlet.

“But what about the pill?”

“Symptom-swap.”

“Have you thought about depo?”

“Mood drop.”

“And the patch?”

“Family history of breaking out in rashes.”

“Well, what about the nuva ring?”

“How will that NOT give me the same symptom-swap issues?”

“…”

“Look, I’m in pain so bad I wake up in the middle of the night. I’m in pain so bad I didn’t know I had appendecitis. I need SOMETHING.”

“Have you tried an ibuprofen protocol?”

“YES.”

“There are yoga poses that help with cramping.”

“I can’t uncurl from the ball of pain I’m in. How the hell am I supposed to hold position?”

“Well, how much caffeine do you drink? That could be a factor.”

“I have three cups of coffee a day and drink lots of water.”

And so on.

Then, one day, I made an appointment and went to Planned Parenthood.

“Yeah. Hi. I have incredibly painful periods that are fucking crippling me, and I need an IUD.”

“Okay. Do you have a chart of your periods I can look at?”

“Yup.”

“Okay. Looks like you have regular, heavy periods where the pain is worsening. Is that right?”

“Yup. And the fatigue. And the mood swings. And all of it.”

“Fatigue and mood swings, too?”

“Yup.”

“…is there any history of endometriosis in your family?”

“Yup. I’ve never been diagnosed, though. They say it takes a biopsy.”

“The biopsy can confirm tissue, but if you don’t have excess tissue, it doesn’t really help. You can have endo without excess tissue.”

“Okay. So, what are my options?”

“I suggest Mirena. Paraguard can make period symptoms worse even though it’s got no hormones while Mirena has a low-dose hormone that should help with all your pain and other issues. Here’s all the info on both of them. Here are models of both of them. Why don’t you take everything with you, read through it, then call if you have any questions? We can go ahead and schedule for insertion before you leave, and you can just call and say which type you want after you’ve read up. Is that okay?”

“…Yeah. That’s. That’s fine.”

“Do you have any questions right now?”

“Um, I got told a bunch I shouldn’t get an IUD because the insertion will hurt too much because I haven’t had kids.”

“Looking at the pain you’re usually in, I think you can handle it. It will definitely hurt, but it should only last about twenty seconds.”

“Twenty seconds?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve been refused the best option for dealing with my symptoms because of TWENTY SECONDS?!”

“Sadly, we hear that a lot.”

Planned Parenthood treated me like a PERSON who was in pain, not a walking uterus bitching and moaning about womanly things. Planned Parenthood showed me respect and kindness and respected the knowledge I brought of my own medical history to the conversation. Planned Parenthood respected my autonomy where other doctors rarely had and paid attention when I explained why I felt the IUD was the best choice. Planned Parenthood showed me I mattered, and I want to show how much they matter to me.

Fluff

To anyone else experiencing cramps on this fine day:

Medic hands can heat up apparently, that would make a great replacement for a heating pad. Better even, this one gives little messages if they’re not working

Rodimus would still be hot after ‘flaming out’, if you let him cool down for long enough he could do that too

Holoforms are great for 'after Advil kicked in cuddles’ and 'you looked like you were dying and you haven’t eaten all day here’s some good food’

Drift knows some yoga poses for reliving cramps if you’re up to it

Your bot or con of choice always has a spare pad/tampon on them just in case (unless you’re a reader who doesn’t have a uterus!). Also pain relievers, they have those too (Rung would be best at this tbh)

I just got sent home with cramps so bad they made me cry (though I'm feeling much better after a few painkillers and a hot shower). Have you ever had cramps like that?

oh gosh!!! :-( :-( i’m so so sorry, because i completely know how you feel; my cramps are the most atrocious every single month. i’m literally curled up in a ball because it will hurt that badly… when i was in high school i had to go home several times just because of them. i hope you feel better soon! 💔

for me, i honestly end up spending hours lying in the shower under the hot water - heat is the #1 helper for me. hot baths also tend to relax my abdomen muscles, as does peppermint tea, and of course, heating pads! also, when it is that time of the month and i need to go out somewhere, i recommend tracking down these “menstrual pain therapy pads” - they’re like portable heating pads, if you will, that have stones in them which heat up once you take stick the pad to your aching tummy or back. you can wear them discretely under your clothing, and i believe they’re under the brand ThermaCare (i found them at Walgreen’s)!

a few other things i know of to be helpful are: performing specific yoga poses that alleviate the pain (google “yoga for cramps”), massaging your own abdomen, and lying on your side. i also know that smoking marijuana helps relax your muscles immensely (of course, if you *can* - i know that not everybody does or is able to do so!), and masturbation (again, a personal choice. ☺️)

i really hope this helps you out a bit! wishing you an easier period!! 🌟

Go with the flow: Yoga for PMS relief

After tracking your cycle for a few months, you may discover that you don’t actually experience premenstrual syndrome or symptoms on a monthly basis. But if you do, you know it. And when it strikes, all hell can break loose.

To cope with PMS, your first instinct might be to curl up in bed and hibernate for days. While rest is important, movement and stimulation could be much more effective for fast relief.

Sometimes the best cures are also the simplest (and the oldest!). Yoga is splendid way to get active whether you’re at home, outdoors or in a studio.

Yoga has been shown to be effective in both easing cramps and shortening how long cramps last (1, 2).

Yoga may help to ease your cramps in a few different ways. First, certain poses help to stretch the areas where you feel premenstrual pain. Research shows that stretching your abdomen, pelvis and groin can lessen the intensity of cramps (3).

Practicing yoga increases blood flow in your body (4), which may also help to ease cramps. Some people who experience cramps have less uterine blood flow on the first day of their cycles (5). This may make their cramps more intense. The warming effect of yoga may also lessen cramp intensity - just like a heating pad…without the pad (6, 7).

Yoga might also ease painful cramps by helping you de-stress.

Why? Turns out when you’re less stressed, your uterus may actually contract less intensely (3). The soothing combination of movement and breath has been shown to ease the feelings of stress and anxiety that some people experience as premenstrual symptoms (8, 9).

Yoga can lower the amount of certain stress hormones produced in your body (10, 11) One of these hormones is cortisol.

Cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” and is intimately connected to the pain some people experience before their period (12).

Yoga may also help in regulating reproductive hormones that contribute to premenstrual symptoms (13). Research shows that levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and prolactin may all be affected by a consistent yoga practice (13). Balancing these, and other hormones might help to lessen cycles irregularities, and ease painful cramping (13, 14).

Lastly, exercise and movement simply distract you from your cramps. Yoga brings focus to other parts of the body and gives the mind something else to pay attention to (15).

Here are a few suggestions for poses you can try next time you’re feeling the pinch of premenstrual cramps:

Bow pose: Stretches and stimulates the abdomen; also applies abdominal pressure, which may be soothing to some people

Camel pose: Stretches and stimulates the abdomen

Legs-up-the-wall: Helps in moving blood from the legs to the abdomen

Child’s pose: Stretches the back, which may help relieve cramps in the back of the lower lumbar

Could you do some headcanons for how Genji, Junkrat and McCree are for when their s/o is on her period (with bad cramps and a bit moody)? Thanks! BTW, great job woth the blog! Its amazing! Love you xx

The cowboy man, the precious X-box and my trash child \(☆ v ☆)/

Genji:

- He tries to be as helpful as he can, he wants you to be happy
- If you snap at him he just brushes it off, he knows that you’re in pain and that your uterus is falling apart, he can take some snapping
- He’ll give you snacks, he wants you to be happy so if you ask for cactus water he’ll get you some flipping cactus water
- He give you back massages, foot rubs
- He’ll ask Hanzo to make some relaxing herb tea and tiddy brother can’t stop smiling at his little X-box brother, so in love with you, getting you tea
- He suggests yoga and exercise for the cramps and he gets a pillow to the face
- He gets you heatpads if you want them
- He gets worried when he sees how strong the cramps are
- “Is that normal? Are you sure? Maybe it’s something else”

Junkrat:

- He’s a little surprised at the way the blood comes out
- “oi, those look like chunks of meat, mate”
“Stop exaggerating”
- He forces you to lay down, he wants you to relax even if he doesn’t know how to help you do it
- He’ll ask Roadhog (who may or may not know how to help, but he’ll try)
- When he comes back and sees you curled and in pain he gets s c a r e d
- He doesn’t want you to be in pain, and it bugs him that he can’t do anything
- He’ll get you any type of food, you want some siberian bear meat???? (Do people eat that??? I hope not??? Idk) Surely Zarya knows where to get some, he’ll get you anything!
- To distract you from the cramps he’ll tell you stories, some made up, some true, all of them wild
- You get angry at everything and he gets a little worried that you’re mad at him (you’re not)

McCree:

- He’s a little scared, he knows what’s happening, and he know why and everything, but he doesn’t enjoy you bleeding, no matter where the blood is coming from
- He’s at your call and will, he just wants you to be okay
- The cramps take him by surpise, he hears you groan and all his senses are in high alert
- “Sugar? What is it? Are ya’ okay? Where does it hurt darlin’?”
- He kisses your tummy and hugs your legs, but not too tightly
- He’s a human heating pad, so you curl up to him and he curls around you
- You start crying at some point and he freaks out, he thinks it’s his fault and he wants to make it better (You were actually crying because you were out of Doritos)
- You two will watch awful movies to distract you from the cramps

(I hope you like it! Thanks for the request! And thank you so much for the sweet words!)

A Reaction to their Girlfriend having cramps

Request: A reaction (more like what would they do) from Jackson, Woozi, Hoya, Woohyun, and Kihyun, when their girlfriend have cramps.

I had to google ways to get rid of cramps

Jackson: Jackson would quickly google ways to get rid of cramps and after learning yoga helps cramps, would search for yoga tutorials. His girlfriend and him would spend the rest of the afternoon laughing at how bad they were and attempting the really hard poses.

Woozi: Woozi would fix his girlfriend herbal tea and would make her comfortable on the couch. He would then go and get his guitar. He would sing and play for her until the cramps died down.

Hoya: Hoya would pull his girlfriend into his arms and massage her lower abdomen. They would just lay on the couch, watching TV, while Hoya gave her massages and occasional kisses.

Woohyun: Woohyun would run a her a warm bath and put all the nice bath things in there. idk soap bath bombs I don’t take baths Then while she was in the bath, he would throw some of her favorites pjs in the dryer so they’d be warm when she got out.

Kihyun: Kihyun would find her some pain medicine and make her lay down. He would then cuddle next to her and give her kisses until they both fall asleep.

Here is my ask if you want to request a reaction

I hope you enjoyed and Thank you for reading!

Staying healthy on your period is so tough, when you’re craving so much, you’re in pain, but there are things that you can do to stay healthy on your period!

  1. Curb your chocolate craving. This is one I find ridiculously tough in that week, I crave so much chocolate, but there are alternatives that we can use as I have found having chocolate gives me crazy mood swings, so having fruit, or even frozen yogurt, that way you’re getting your sweet fix, but it is so much healthier. Or if that isn’t to your liking, look at trying things like dark chocolate, you won’t eat as much but you will also feed your cravings!
  2. Avoid romance sections or things that will make you cry: Your hormones are high, it might seem like an awesome idea to stick the notebook on and have a good chill time, but instead put something that will make you laugh on, laughter is the best medicine!
  3. Avoid things that are high in sodium: When you’re on your period most people end up bloating and being in lots of pain so try to avoid things like soda, try to drink 2 litres of water a day to try and keep the bloating to a minimum.
  4. Modifying your workouts: I have found that working out a little can really help, so if you’re having crazy cramps and they’re hurting, go for a little walk, bike ride, even a light job (not a marathon but a little jog around the block will help. If you’re going to go for a jog, do some pre running stretches that will help to target your abdominal area, so things like hip rotations. Make sure you take some pain relief around 30 mins before you run, if you go for a run or a jog, instead of doing a long run, try to do like HIIT run, so short high intensity bursts and in the final 5 - 10 minutes do a power walk to let your body cool down.
  5. Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 helps the brain to produce serotonin, but it also helps to reduce PMS cravings, increase you energy levels, regulate your mood swings and even lessen the bloating. (Honestly, it’s like perfect and helps so much)
  6. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep: This is so important for you during your monthly, if insomnia occurs due to your hormones changing take a hot bath around an hour before you go to sleep, that way it will help to relax your body and get you ready for bed. Another option is having a late afternoon walk, by being outside in the late afternoon it may help to stimulate melatonin which regulates the body’s internal clock.
  7. Tea: Tea is absolutely amazing while on your period, instead of reaching for some coffee or alcohol, having things like ginger tea can help with nausea and menstrual cramps. Whereas coffee and alcohol can increase anxiety and play with your heightened emotions.
  8. Calcium: When you’re on your period as it can really help to reduce your PMS symptoms but can also help with your bone health.
  9. Magnesium: Magnesium is another really good thing to have while you’re on your period, as it can really help reduce the swelling that is caused by your period.
  10. Breaking up your meals: When you’re on your period what can really help is eating little and often, so instead of having 5 normal sized meals, what might help is to eat little and often because you don’t want to feel too full or too hungry as you can end up feeling really sick so little and often can help.
  11. Yoga: Yoga is so brilliant for you on your period so I will list good yoga poses for you that can really help!

Yoga poses for menstrual cramps:

  • Janu Sirsasana (head to knee forward bend): Start of the floor with your legs extended, then bend the right knee outward so your foot is pressed on the inner left thigh. Grab your shin or foot and lengthen your torso over the straightened leg.
  • Seated Side Stretch: Start off by getting comfy on your mat, tilt your body from side to side, feel that gentle stretch on your side, take a deep breath, lengthen your spine and take it slowly.
  • Reclining Eagle Twist: The reclining eagle twist can really help to relieve tension and loosen the lower back, so lay on your back, and twist your legs from side to side, but make sure that your shoulder blades are on the floor and feel that awesome stretch!
  • Pigeon Pose: This can rally help your hip opener, if you’re in a lot of pain you can use things like a pillow, to help with the pain, don’t push things too quickly, you need to take it slowly and if you can’t get straight into it for the pain, ease yourself in.
  • Child’s Pose: Child’s pose can really help you, it doesn’t matter if it is a regular child’s pose just do what makes you comfortable but keep breathing it will really help.

Do not pressure yourself too much trying to get into these poses, you don’t want to make things more painful for yourself you want to be comfortable and relax the muscles.

Foods that will really help you while you’re on your period!

  • Leafy green vegetables: These beauties are filled with things nutrients like iron and B vitamins but they’re also high in fibre which can help with digestive issues, that can be associated with your monthly!
  • Nuts: Nuts are filled with the good fats and omega-3s, and can be more filling than just junk food.
  • Fresh Fruits: Fruit can really help with period related digestion problems and during these times it can be completely helpful, and I’ve found that fruits help with cramps.
