Родина-Мать Зовет or The Motherland Calls in Volgograd, Russia designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich.
When I initially found out about this sculpture I was completely rattled that I had never heard of it before. It is made of 7,800 tons of concrete, and is 91 metres tall and is therefore the tallest secular statue in the world. It was built as a WW2 memorial and the 200 steps leading up to the statue represent the 200 days of the battle of Stalingrad. How could I not know that something this large existed? It is very humbling when you are presented with something that you knew absolutely nothing about. I really hope to one day go to Russia and see this masterpiece in person.
