I think it interesting that Harry vocally supports Hagrid, but it’s Hermione that will got to any lengths to protect him from pureblood bigots. In contrast, Hermione is desperate to free the house-elves but it’s Harry who makes sure he protects Dobby from abusive habits and situations.
It’s not that Harry and Hermione don’t care for Hagrid and Dobby respectively, but it seems to be that they are more apt to recognize patterns and behaviors, and then act upon that recognition, because bigotry (for Hermione and Hagrid) and abuse (for Harry and Dobby) is something they have lived through.
Regardless of my feelings about Draco and whether or not he deserved to be turned into a ferret and bounced all over the room, seeing McGonagall rush to the defense of any student makes me grin awfully big. Absolute queen, that she is. Absolute queen.
