Be More Chill Somebody to Love Me (Expensive Headphones): Prom?!
“-Rich come on, please answer your phone.”
“Hey Rich it’s Jake please call back. I’m sorry about earlier.”
“If you don’t call me in the next five minutes I swear to God I will fucking kill you. I know you’re hearing these you stupid bitch.”
“Sorry about that Rich, I just lost it for a second listen I’m-” Rich deleted the message not wanting to hear anymore of Jake’s voice. Michael and Jeremy had fallen asleep again allowing Rich to go through the thirty five voicemails Jake had left him during the mint movie marathon. This was crazy, they didn’t even break up yet and Jake was already acting like he left him. He just…needed a break. His phone vibrated again as Jake called him. Going to answer he stopped mid reach. He didn’t need to answer. It was just a break they could talk about, later.
“Sir, please stop. If you move your hand any more the damage could be severe.”
“Fine, whatever.” Jake swatted the nurse’s hand away looking back at his phone. Rich still hadn’t answered any of his calls no matter the message he left.
‘Doesn’t he care about me anymore? He knows I need him. This just how mom and dad started and soon he’ll be gone too.’ Jake wasn’t crying anymore as he thought about that. 'No, no, no I’m not letting that happen. I’m going to get him back, I need him.’ Ignoring the nurse he walked out the door.
“Do you see him?” Glancing into the lunchroom Michael looked around for Jake before shaking his head no. “Oh thank God.” They got in line for food as Rich kept looking around the cafeteria. “I’m just not ready yet. To talk to him.”
'I hope you’re never ready.’ Michael kept his thoughts quiet as a loud boom made all the students cringe from the pain of the noise. Looking over they saw Mr.Reyes on a makeshift podium holding a microphone.
“-is this thing on? Oh good. Hello Middleborough students!” There was a collective groan across the lunchroom. “I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I picked the shortest straw, literally, amongst us teachers and will have to tell you that Prom is not next week.”
“There was a scheduling mishap with the town hall over when we would be renting it for Prom and instead of next week we’re going to have the Prom tomorrow night.”
“What?!” The whole of Middleborough watched as Chloe stomped up to the podium, grabbing Mr.Reyes by his shirt and lifting him up off his feet. “What do you mean tomorrow night?! What about all my appointments? My hair, my nails-”
“I’m sorry but it’s either this or no Prom at all. And I’m not the one responsible for this mistake, ahem *yearbook kids* ahem.”
“You’re kidding me.” Rich looked over at Michael surprised.
“Well it was supposed to be me, Christine and Jeremy but Christine’s still out of state and Jeremy’s still puking his guts up.” Rich looked down at his tray unsure what to think. He and Jake planned on going together but now, especially with the change of dates that seemed impossible. Paying for his meal Rich and Michael passed by Chloe on the way to their table, still trying to wring Mr.Reyes’ neck until another teacher pulled her away.
“Chloe’s taking it pretty seriously.” Rich said as they sat down at the table. Brooke peeked her head up from where she been sleeping.
“We’ve been planning this for months. The fact she hasn’t killed somebody yet is amazing.” Looking over at the raging girl the group couldn’t help but agree.
“Hey Michael can you wait for me? I need to get something out of my locker, I’ll be out in a few minutes.” The two were walking out of the school when Rich suddenly stopped realizing he forgot his jacket in the locker.
“Yeah, I needed to use the bathroom anyway.” Heading in a different direction Rich walked over to his locker, bending down as he opened it when a hand slammed near his face startling him, making him fall over in surprise on his left side
“Aw, fuck. My eye.”
“Here let me help.” A hand grabbed his, helping him stand up again. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s oka-Jake?” Jake’s hand moved from his hand to Rich’s wrist.
“You’ve been avoiding me all day.”
“No I haven’t-Jesus Jake, that hurts.”
“Why? You know that I love you.”
“What part of break so you not understand?”
“The you leaving me alone part.” Rich struggled as Jake pressed him against the wall, crying. “Rich I love you so, so much.”
“Jake, let go of me. Please.” Instead of doing that Jake pulled Rich behind him towards the door. “What are you doing?”
“We’re going home, we’re going to be happy again and you’re going to stay me. Come on, think about it, tomorrow’s Prom! We’ll go together and everything will be normal again. Your were so excited last week when we bought the tickets!”
“I’m not going to Prom with you!”
“Because I’m going with someone else!”
“Who?” Rich winced at Jake’s voice yelling out the first name he could think of.
“I-I’m going with Michael!” Jake let go of Rich as he said that.
“You’re kidding right?”
“No I’m being serious! I’m going with him.”
“What happened to being just friends?”
“We are! We’re going as friends and that’s it.”
“I thought you loved me.”
“Jake, I do. But we need to…” Rich trailed off as he saw Michael turned around the corner to see the two fighting.
“You bastard!” Jake ran at Michael tackling him to the ground. “I Thought-I-Told-You-To-Fucking-” Rich struggled to pull Jake off Michael who looked up confused from the ground, his face bloody from the punches, glasses laying broken a few feet away.
“Leave him alone.”
“I don’t want to talk to you Jake.” Lifting Michael off the ground they struggled to get out to the car as Jake fell to the ground, alone and crying.
“Rich…” The feeling of abandonment filled his chest again as he watched the real walk away.
